How you watch your film is up to you. I'm not asking questions .If you cannot watch your assigned film for financial reasons (some are rental only) or just really don't want to spend $3 for a shot at winning some Blu-rays, let me know and I'll assign you another film (likely not from the previously-posted list). I cannot legally obligate you to spend money on this and I also ethically won't do it.
P.S. Streaming Platforms are as of August 30th. I don't know what will change in Spetember, but you can always take a look at https://www.justwatch.com/

Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)
Welcome to the OHMC18 pre-challenge thread for 2022. The sole purpose is to hopefully get the optional lists done early and without distractions. Even when the main thread goes up this one continues ...until we're done.
We configure them in the following order - Theme Nights ---> 31 Film Subset ---> The Checklist. It's done that particular way due to the first two syncing up with one another, and so you can have some time to plan ahead accordingly.
In case you missed the news in the planning thread from June, things are being done a bit differently this year in order to expedite the pre-challenge process. The theme nights list is already ready to go and many subset volunteers have already been chosen. See post #12 for more details.
The usual reminder there's some broken formatting due to the November 2019 forum update (and the January one before it), which brought us our ridiculous 60 image limit.
Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)
Here's the 2022 Subset Listin no particular order (aside from a few assigned dates) with the physical media and streaming guide included. The theme/subset hybrid table with all the bells and whistles is coming sooner than later, and same goes for the subset threads. Until that time the current status of the assigned dates can be found on post #26 of the pre-challenge thread.
As always, an eclectic mix with a few classics, modern, 2 OHMC "favorites", some gory, psychotronic, Gothic, obscure, 2 from the knighted centennial man of the hour, erotic, family-friendly, a 53 minute film ...from the 80s, avant-garde, some uncaged Cage, cheeseball, a urinating grandmother, some anaglyph 3-D, foreign, an event film, a film that hasn't had a release since VHS, and Vincent Gallo ejaculating into a bathtub. Quite a few have recent first-time Blu-ray and UHD releases (a new record this year) and upgrades.
If I missed something please let me know and I'll update accordingly. Comments welcome.
All dates have been assigned.

Tubi, The Roku Channel, Freevee (formerly "IMDb TV"), Pluto TV, Redbox and Crackle = w/ ads. There's probably a few more that I'm not familiar with.
Getting reliable information on what's region free with foreign releases can be a time-consuming endeavor, so aside from a few exceptions, didn't list that info.
Not every standard foreign release is listed, unless it's the only option. Focusing on the notable releases.
Spoiler:
For the first time ever the indie/arthouse votes had no duplicates, so random.org decided that outcome.
Scratch what I said earlier about "up to 3 picks" ...clckworang and Darkgod both have 4. Last-minute shakeup. Long story. That also resulted in a theme promised to someone being switched to another (and Night Train going to supernatural, which it does technically fit). My apologies, but it was the only way to do so without replacing something.

Son of Dracula dates the original Count Dracula as being destroyed in the 19th-century, when the original novel was set.
The following year, the Dracula-related series continued with House of Frankenstein in 1944, and House of Dracula in 1945,
both of which starred John Carradine as the original Count Dracula.
The famous arrival of Dracula's coffin by train was reprised in Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948).
While Brewster and Lazlo speculate that he might be a descendant of the original Dracula, congruent with the film's title,
Katherine tells Frank that "he is Dracula". However, he is described as his descendant in the 1943 press kit.
This is the first Universal Dracula film to take the Count out of Europe and bring him to America.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)
__________________________________________________________________________________ THEME NIGHTS CONSTRUCTION
Here's the new theme suggestions compiled together. We need to whittle them down to an acceptable number and decide which of the old themes make a triumphant return. Once again, there's quite a few anniversary, location-based suggestions, and the inevitable leftovers. Don't forget the ones with fewer titles (let's say under 50, with exceptions) will need to be paired up with one or two other themes.
If you have any new theme suggestions let me know and I'll add them here. Include a link to go with it if you can.
Themes with multiple links are bound to have duplicate titles; omitting them is just too time-consuming. "Total titles" aren't always accurate.
Theme names are subject to change. In other words, the titles and cheesy taglines will come later for some, so please don't judge them based solely on their potentially boring titles here.

FEATURED THEMES Important anniversaries, centennial birthdays, recently deceased horror legends, etc.
The Belated 15th Anniversary of TCM Underground : (premiered on Friday the 13, 2006. We forgot this last year, and we did celebrate the 65th anniversary of Godzilla one year late, so there you go)
Bubba Rodriguez Lives! The 40th Anniversary of Joe Bob Briggs: (aka "Joe Bob IV: The Ernie Files". On January 15, 1982, “Joe Bob Goes to the Drive-In” appeared in the Dallas Times Herald for the very first time.)
"The Grim Reaper" is this movie about a guy who will use a meat cleaver when he has to, but usually he just uses his mouth. (I know what you're thinking: you're thinking vampire. So was I. But you're wrong.) I won't tell you the whole deal, but the Grim Reaper is not a monster; he's a believable human being who likes to kill people and then chew on them for a while.
There are these three guys and three girls who go to a Greek island on vacation. But, boy, do they have a surprise coming! The Grim Reaper has already killed off everybody and stashed them in a cave to make meals for the worms. All that's left is this dark, spooky, old lady who roams around through an abandoned city and doesn't even answer when the guys say things like, "Excuse me, maam, but can you tell us why nobody's here?"
Then one of the guys gets his headhacked off, and we get a good look at the Reaper. Holy (Editor's note: word deleted!) The great thing about the Reaper is that he looks like he just crawled out of a Dempster Dumpster. His long white hair is dry and tangled and wind-blown. and his face is pitted and creased, and he stands about 6-10 and weighs 260, and he's like all the psychos because he walks real slow. Now get this: The Reaper starts having flashbacks, and we find out he's a cannibal. He had to be, though, because him and his wife and their baby were lost at sea on this raft, and after several days the baby died, and the Reaper started licking his chops over that toddler meat. The mother tried to save the kid, but the Reaper turned gonzo and knifed her in the stomach. I think that, sociologically speaking, this episode could explain much of the Reaper's later behavior.
There are three really great scenes in this movie: one in a house where the girls (including a blind girl) are left alone, wondering when the Reaper is going to show his molars; another in the Reaper’s crypt, where he has a collection of about 50 moldy bodies; and the final scene
when the Reaper chases a cute blonde (Tisa Farrow) and the blind girl through a creaky old mansion.
Besides Tisa Farrow, the movie stars Saverio Vallone as the guy who falls in love with her. It was directed by an Italian named Joe D'Amato, who does some great skin flicks starring Laura Gemser. but, sorry, no flesh in this one.
Joe Bob gives "The Grim Reaper"
three stars for scary and two and a half stars for story.

In The Frightfest Guide to Monster Movies, celebrated writer, editor and critic Michael Gingold starts in the silent era and traces the history of the genre all the way through to the present day. From Universal Studios legends such as Frankenstein's Monster and the Mummy, to the big bugs, atomic mutants and space invaders that terrorized the '50s, to the kaiju of Japan and the ecological nightmares of the '70s and '80s, to the CG creatures and updated favourites of recent years ― they're all here.
200 of the greatest creature features from across the globe are reviewed, with fascinating facts and critical analysis, all illustrated with a ghoulish gallery of remarkable monstrous imagery. Cult-favourite filmmaker Frank Henenlotter, creator of some of the screen's most idiosyncratic and bizarre beings, contributes a foreword, A whole world and grisly galaxy of creatures great and small, spawned from space, the supernatural and strange science, the beginning of time, beneath the sea and beyond imagination, await in this book. Dare you confront the beasts within?
Like many, award-winning filmmaker Axelle Carolyn (Soulmate, Tales of Halloween – both of which feature spectres) has been obsessed with haunted houses and revenants for as long as she can remember. In this volume, she surveys the last 120 years of the genre and reviews the 200 most memorable titles from across the globe. From timeless classics to recent blockbusters, quirky indies to international sensations, hidden gems to oddities, each of these movies has in some way contributed to the development of the ghost movie as we know it, in all its incarnations and cultural variants.
When hinges creak in doorless chambers, and frightening sounds echo through the halls... Welcome, foolish mortals, to The FrightFest Guide to Ghost Movies.

With a blistering introduction by 42nd Street habitue, aficionado and COMBAT SHOCK writer/director, Buddy Giovinazzo, The Frightfest Guide to Exploitation Movies fully captures the range and breadth of the entire exploitation spectrum.
Enter, if you dare, into the sordid, sleazy underworld of Z-studio slime and punishment, where orgies of the dead, cesspools of vice and shameless desires featured tantalizing titles, lurid artwork, daring advertising campaigns and overblown hype.
Exploitation movies have never gone away. Inside you'll discover the unbelievable reasons why.
During the second half of the 20th century, landmark works of the horror film genre were as much the product of enterprising regional filmmakers as of the major studios. From backwoods Utah to the Louisiana bayous to the outer boroughs of New York, independent, regional films like Night of the Living Dead, Last House on the Left, I Spit on Your Grave, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and The Evil Dead stood at the vanguard of horror cinema. This overview of regionally produced horror and science fiction films includes interviews with 13 directors and producers who operated far from mainstream Hollywood, along with a state-by-state listing of regionally produced genre films made between 1958 and 1990. Highlighting some of the most influential horror films of the past 50 years, this work celebrates not only regional filmmaking, but also a cultural regionalism that is in danger of vanishing.

House of Psychotic Women: (taken from the book "House of Psychotic Women: An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis in Horror and Exploitation Films" by Kier-La Janisse)
Expanded list with 100 additional reviews coming soon. (137 total titles)
Cinema is full of neurotic personalities, but few things are more transfixing than a woman losing her mind onscreen. Horror as a genre provides the most welcoming platform for these histrionics: crippling paranoia, desperate loneliness, masochistic death-wishes, dangerous obsessiveness, apocalyptic hysteria. Unlike her male counterpart - 'the eccentric' - the female neurotic lives a shamed existence, making these films those rare places where her destructive emotions get to play.
Originally released in 2012, the newly expanded 10th anniversary edition adds more than 100 new film reviews.
Yo! OHMC Raps, Rocks & Scares: (horror films with tie-in music videos, rap songs/videos, used by rappers sampling horror movie soundtracks, and simply making references in their music)
Film review books may be a dime a dozen, but how many include the actual experience of witnessing the movie in a theater?
Zine editor and online columnist Nick Cato shares his time growing up in seedy NY and NJ theaters, and how these screenings helped to shape opinion of the movies. Whether one of his beloved local theaters in Staten Island, NY, or at a double feature at the infamous 42nd Street in Times Square during its heyday, audiences were always lively and outspoken.
Part memoir, part film criticism, SUBURBAN GRINDHOUSE looks at the audiences as much as it is a book about exploitation movies themselves.

For the checklist it might be fun to have a brief template for highlights/awards. At the extreme reformat the whole checklist to be a genre awards list (not just a vampire movie, but 'best vampire film this year,' etc), at a minimum add a few open ended items to get recommendations (similar to how people might not indicate formats, decades, etc if not encouraged but here for film recommendations). For example:
'Movie That Actually Scared You':
'Best Creature Feature':
'Most Memorable Soundtrack':
'Worst Film':
etc etc etc.
Even if these items were option it might be a way to see recommendations in the checklists or use existing items in a way to frame that people indicate a highlight within that subgenre.
As much as I love Jenny Agutter, Deborah Foreman, and Chuck Conners, 5, 6, and 7 films for them just aren't enough. I may have been one of ones who voted for a minimum of five films to get an actor included on the "Actor" portion of the checklist, but now that I've seen it in practice, it's just too few to choose from. Maybe we could come up with a list of 10-15 actual horror movie icons (like this year's Boris Karloff and others) to keep in the "Actor" portion on a permanent basis, and complete the roster with those actors with fewer credits (such as Jenny Agutter) or those whose films generally suck (like Arielle Brachfield, who, out of a total of 20 films actually available to see, has 14 that have a rating under 5) in order to give the checklist some freshness. Personally, I'd rather have just icons, but I'm old and cranky and get off my lawn.
I'd also like to suggest another checklist item: Watch three horror short films (under 40 minutes each). That would add some variety to things without overtaxing anyone unduly. I'd love to see what short films people watch and like during the Challenge.
I'd like to suggest overhauling or eliminating the wildcard. Think back to the original wildcard and why we added a wildcard in the first place. In the beginning, the challenge was so restrictive. We couldn't count TV or shorts. It was only features. The original wildcard, It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, was created as a wildcard only because it failed the TV and short rule, not because of content. Strangely, the use of the wildcard seems to have gotten increasingly broad even as our choices for countable content has greatly expanded.
Now that the rules have changed and shorts and TV are included, I don't think we need the wildcards. We already have so much flexibility. You could probably reach 100 without even watching a horror movie and instead just focusing on Halloween TV specials. There are even reality shows that would count! With all of that available content, do we really need people listing things that are clearly not in the true spirit of the challenge? I don't think so. Feel free to watch what you want, but it doesn't belong on your list.
I would have liked to maybe keep the wildcard for borderline entries or ones someone thought were horror but turned out not to be, but I think people would abuse and do crazy rationalizations (Pete's Dragon has a dragon in it, dragons are scary monsters, so it counts. Barney is a dinosaur, and dinosaurs are scary. My local news reports on murders; therefore, it is close enough).
What I think I would rather see is to eliminate wildcards altogether for movies and TV but allow them for other things. In practice, that would mean no wildcard movies but instead use a wildcard for the horror podcast you listened to or that book you read. Use it for Halloween parties, haunted houses, applicable museum visits, concerts, plays, trick or treating, etc. If we did that, I'd even be in favor of increasing our wildcards! It would encourage some breaks and socialization. People won't maybe feel like they're missing out on things trying to stay home for movies. It would also encourage some horror or Halloween-related content outside of just movies and TV.
While I mostly agree with the above I vote for keep wild cards mainly for 2 reasons.
Not quite horror theatrical showings, being a movie forum I would venture that going to the theater is still a pretty big deal for a lot of us and I wouldn’t want people to skip out on a not quite movie because of the lack of wild cards also we all really could use the excuse to get out a bit more in October.
The ability to count a live event for the reasons listed in the post above.
Also it is now a great time to request time off work for October everyone, I just did.
So far as I've ever understood things, theatrical exhibition counts as a format. I've used it as one going back to my first Horror Challenge in 2009 and every subsequent challenge I've participated in since where appropriate.
I don't get the compulsion to list live events, but I've no reason to object to it. It's your list.
I had an idea for a Free Check reward. Example: Let's say you can earn one each from the Decades sections. Currently, you only have to complete 6 of 11. If, however, you watch a movie from all 11 decades, get a Free Check. Now you can skip doing homework to find out what format something was shot on, or comb through the obituaries to see who's died recently. I'd offer no more than 3 Free Checks throughout the entire checklist, and require at least 10 movies per section (except MPA Rating since there are only 9, unless we add "TV Rating" or some such). I feel like that's a cleaner system than wildcards, and science has proven people like to earn rewards. Or at least I think it has.
I like the idea of the sections for different directors, producers, makeup artists, etc. The pools need to be expanded to at least ten options. I'd add Carl Laemmle, Jr. to Producer and Jack Pierce to Makeup. I spent my challenge last year going through the Universal Classic Monsters box set. I was surprised that neither of them got me anything.
Amend "Watch a movie and its remake on the same day" to add "or two adaptations of the same source material." Coppola's Dracula wasn't a remake of Universal's, but I feel watching both together fits the spirit of this check item. They'd have to both be adaptations of Bram Stoker's novel, though. You couldn't just pick any two movies that happened to feature the character Dracula, so you couldn't get away with a double feature of Billy the Kid vs. Dracula and Hotel Transylvania.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)
In addition to the changes that have been made, I've sent out those aforementioned reminder PMs to every subset volunteer. The theme nights list is assembled, although I do need a day or so to look over everything. The plan is to post the themes list on Monday night (7/11).
There's still time to volunteer for subsets picks if you haven't already in the planning thread. Just be aware that it'll kickoff right after I post the theme nights list. No lollygagging this year!
Also, there's still a few new theme suggestions that haven't been added to post #6 as well as a few links that need updating, but that's obviously not a priority at the moment since the themes list is already ready to go. Still, I'll update it as soon as I can.
In the meantime, please take the time to take this poll...
Wild Cards.
a) Eliminate Film and Television Use! (Use them exclusively for horror conventions, podcasts, concerts, books, Halloween parties, plays, haunted houses, etc.)
And, like mentioned in the planning thread, feel free to go ahead and give your Indie/Arthouse and Comedy Crossover picks.
Everything that's been used in the past...

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)
For my subset pick, I'm going with Jesús Franco's Dracula (1970) because I've enjoyed the Dracula Daily emails. If at all possible, could my day be any of the following dates? These are the ones in the novel for which there are entries: 1-5; 11; 24; 29.
Wild Card poll: D) Other - Choice A (eliminate film/TV) and have participants move non-film/TV activities to a separate section of their post, independent of their formal list.
Indie/Art House Crossover: Hour of the Wolf (1968)
Comedy Crossover: Bubba Ho-tep (2002)
I have no way of knowing what will be available in October, but both are presently streaming on Tubi so it's possible they'll be available for free for anyone to watch that way.

I can give you day one, which is a Saturday to boot. The Christopher Lee Centennial is currently assigned for that day. If for whatever reason I do change it to another (probably won't), I'll assign it to one of the other dates. No problem.
Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)
For my subset pick, I'm going with The Ghost and Mr. Chicken for the Comedy Crossover. It's going to be on Svengoolie this week if you want to save it on your DVR.
I'm limiting my theme votes to 5 to make things easier. 1. Dark Roasted Death - A Damn Fine Coffee 2.90 Minutes or Less
3. Mountains of Madness
4. Raging Inferno: Fire-Laden Horror
5. Horrors at the Nightclub
The list is also on Letterboxd, though unfortunately LB doesn't have any list compare/contrast features, so it's pretty much there just to look pretty. But still, there if it's helpful. (Both versions have been updated to include 2021 picks.)
Also, if you're looking for inspiration for your suggestions, just for fun I threw together a list of titles on mightysparks's "They Shoot Zombies, Don't They?" that haven't yet been used as subset picks. (I made the lists very quickly, so apologies for any errors...) IMDb Letterboxd
There are 39 movies in the TSZDT top 100 alone that haven't been used yet!

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)
I pick wildcard choice A. I think it would be eliminate the issue of people watching highly questionable choices and encourage more activity in October outside just movies.
