These "October Horror Movie Challenge" threads are for the discussion of the films in the 31 FILM SUBSET list.

The plan is for everyone to watch this film on the October day in the thread title, and to start discussing it the morning of the following day.
You may start discussion early if you want, but the preferred plan is for this to be as much of a group exercise as possible, with all of us viewing it "together" and discussing after.

Of course, you are totally encouraged to participate in these threads even if you haven't watched the movie on the designated day.
Even if you haven't watched it in years, or are not participating in the Horror Challenge, please feel free to chime in.

Spoiler tags are unnecessary in here, so if you have yet to see the film BEWARE OF SPOILERS.

This was a step down in some ways from 4, 5 and 6, but it's a showcase for Jason kills and that's enough for a strong recommendation. I look at those first 8 Paramount releases as Friday's "Golden Eight" and thus far, they remain the best Jason stuff out there. Some of the comic books released in recent years have also been superior to the New Line film versions.

The telekinetic twist seems too gimmicky (even though as a fanboy I think it's a really cool idea). I love the idea of Jason chained to a bolder under water and emerging also the bit where he is in flames; that's great imagery. I'll have to revisit more of the Friday the 13th movies. I agree with indiephantom that VII is a step down; VI is one of my favorites and I love the continuity from the Jarvis films.

The disjointed montage starting VII is funny because while fun, it seems random.

Re: "Friday the 13th Part VII" Reviews/Discussion - 2014 Horror Challenge: Day 28

I watched this one last year so I chose to watch it this year with the commentary. The commentary has the director John Carl Buechler and Kane Hodder together (Kane is by phone) and the actress who plays Tina, Jennifer Banko separately. It is a decent track but really doesn't contain a whole lot of new info than what you have already likely heard thru all the interviews and behind the scenes stuff from "Crystal Lake, His Name Was Jason, and the extra on the disc.

Banko is very spunky and seems to have really enjoyed her time doing the film. She gives some interesting info and is obviously having fun doing the commentary. Buechler basically make lame jokes throughout his time there while adding very little of interest. Hodder tries to give some interesting tidbits here and there but Buechler then ruins the flow with another lame joke. He honestly sounded like he was getting on Hodder's nerves. I know he was getting on mine.

The movie is dumb fun with an ending that is beyond ridiculous. But then again, that is par for the course with Friday the 13th films, isn't it? The MPAA really chopped the shit out of this one in regards to the kills and this one is begging for an unrated version (though I think I remember them saying that is impossible from the Crystal Lake documentary as the original footage has been destroyed...or was that a different Friday the 13th?).

My rating: ***1/2 out of *****

No, that was this one. I think some super heavily treaded VHS copy of the cuts exist though, it is non-restorable though.

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, and it really makes me want to watch that documentary and reflect on the whole series.

The last 15 minutes is what always prevents me from lowering this installment in the bottom tier.

With this new viewing, I never noticed that Bill Butler was in this. And Maddy sure looks like she could've been the daughter of Mrs. Shepard instead of Tina!

I watched it with the original commentary from the Crystal-Manhattan boxset which just has Buechler & Hodder. This track was better than I remembered.

I was planning on watching the BR comm for the first time but the wife wanted to watch as well so we just did the movie proper. I will have to do a back to back on the Crystal Lake to Manhattan commentary to the one on the blu.

I have watched the last few Kane Hodder films and he has to be the most overrated Jason ever. His heavy breathing is so exaggerated that it looks like Jason has asthma. I never noticed it as much until I watched one of the documentaries where Hodder mentions it proudly as his unique schtick for Jason and now I can't help but overly notice it.

I was a bit underwhelmed by the "best" Jason, too. But then I'm not really in a position to judge F13 films, because so far I've only seen III, VIII and now VII. Which is fairly random and has me quite confused on what's meant to be happening.... although it appears that the answer is "whatever they like"..!
