The Most Offbeat Films Ever Made

Mass Marathon of the Damned XII Presents

The Ultimate Guide to Strange Cinema

***Marathon is optional. Only one theme required to complete.***

It isn’t every film that features man-eating zombie sushi.
But for those searching for just that and more strange things in their viewing queue, this film guide is for you.
Organized by genre, including comedy, horror, action, drama, fantasy, and sci-fi, this title offers 300 reviews of
genre films from all over the world, 160+ photos, and exclusive interviews and quotes from the people behind some
of the most offbeat films ever made. Alongside this curated list of viewing recommendations, longtime fans and new comers to
strange cinema gain bits of fun and informative trivia. For example, David Caruso’s film debut was Without Warning (1980),
a carefree trip into the woods thwarted by killer flying alien discs. Lurking in these so-bad-they’re-good-films,
you’ll find other familiar actors like David Carradine, James Brolin,Martin Landau,
and Ryan Gosling in films like Death Race 2,000 (1975), The Car (1977), The Being (1983), and Lost River (2014).
The zombie sushi, by the way, is from Dead Sushi (2012).

Catalina Island Marathon is one of many marathons happening today.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 17th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

Guys I was having a blast putting the packs together. Always a fun afternoon.

I'm gonna see if my wife can stomach Midsommar to start...it was my absolute favorite discovery of last year's OHMC. She's not much of a horror person tho. :/

I hear ya. My wife waited until we we married to tell me that she didn't like horror movies..

Thanks for your contribution to the challenge!

I watched it, interestingly enough, working my way through the They Shoot Zombies, Don't They? Top 1000 Horror Movies. (It's number #443.) I'm not sure I would have watched it otherwise and it's not particularly my thing, but I'm glad I saw it. And glad that it's sparking discussion.

The mention of Midsommar makes me want to finally watch that director's cut Blu-ray since I didn't get around to it this Summer. I loved the theatrical cut, just don't know if I wanna invest almost 3 hours in one film during the challenge. Decisions.

I am right there with you. Last year I watched it, then watched it AGAIN. I don't know if my wife can make it through the normal one (it'll be the scene with the ledge early on...) but I REALLY want to see the director's cut.

MAN did I love that movie.

Regarding longer duration movies I've found it helps me to track average film length and try to keep it near 90 minutes; that way I feel like it's ok to watch a 3 hour movie because I'd also watched a few 70 minute films.

FYI, I was planning what to watch in this year's Challenge last night, and it looks like A Bay of Blood and Carrie will, combined, hit about 80% of the checklist items.

Don't hold me to the math, however.

For the first time, I created a spreadsheet in Excel to connect movies to checklist items. Waxwork covers half the checklist.

I can't even find the checklist. I guess it's a good thing I don't usually look at it until the last week of October to see if it's worth trying to complete or not.

I also don't get all the meticulous planning - it would take away some of the fun for me, but hey, different strokes...

Scooby-Doo! and the Witch's Ghost (1999)
Scooby-Doo! and the Goblin King (2008)
Happy Halloween, Scooby-Doo! (2020)
Straight Outta Nowhere: Scooby-Doo! Meets Courage the Cowardly Dog (2021)

Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008)
Resident Evil: Damnation (2012)
Resident Evil: Vendetta (2017)

Fear(s) of the Dark (2007)
Extraordinary Tales (2013)
Seoul Station (2016)

The Wolf House (2018)

I skipped anime because there's just not that many horror movies, and if you have any interest in the subject, you already know what they are. Otherwise, there's actually quite a bit available these days. Everything I listed should be available on disc or by streaming and remember, just because it's animated doesn't mean it's for kids or just for kids.

Felidae (1994) is pretty good, but IMDb doesn't categorize it as "Horror," despite dealing with murder, a mad scientist, and some other sci-fi/horror stuff - so there's another one where it's kind of up to the individual if they want to count it or not.

Edit: It's also not a "family-friendly" cartoon. You probably won't want little kids watching it with you.

I file it under giallo, though, since it's German, krimi (late period) might be more appropriate.

I forgot about Fear(s) of the Dark (2007), and should have remembered Seoul Station (2016). I don't think I've ever heard of The Wolf House (2018) and Extraordinary Tales (2013). It's harder to keep track of, much less find out about, the foreign releases.

Edit: Jogged my memory and I added the two Hellboy Animated movies.

I actually thought about comparing it to a giallo flick since it deals primarily with murders and an investigation. And like many gialli, it isn't listed as "horror" on IMDb - even though it would probably fit many peoples' definition. I liked your list, and just chose that particular movie to talk about because we had recently discussed some movies that aren't listed as horror on IMDb that most of us would probably call horror movies, and because I thought it was one of the lesser-viewed movies on the list that deserves to be seen.

You did, but I felt I should reiterate that point after expressing a positive opinion on the film, so I went back and added my warning.

The checklist is here. I literally just plugged it into a table.

It's in all the usual spots this year - in the wiki link of both the discussion and list threads, in the link on post #1 of this thread under 'optional stuff', and the actual tables are on post #2 of each.

Yeah, I'm pretty meticulous about keeping films around the 90 minute mark and under, although I'll catch the occasional 2 hour film. I still get caught up in obsessing over the numbers. That being said, I have zero hesitation catching a 6+ hour documentary or trailer comp for some reason.

Thanks. I see the link at the top of the page now, and I saw your post in the other thread earlier and took a look at it.

I just want to throw some more love at Midsommar. It was my favorite film of 2019. However, I can only imagine watching it in the Summer season, it's not a very Autumn/Halloween-esque movie, though it is very much horror.
