I cannot legally obligate you to spend money on this and I also ethically won't do it.

Subset Pick Suggestions for Indiephantom

All of these are films I've seen and highly recommend including two more recent slashers that I think some of you will really enjoy. Also a contemporary classic in there starring my girl, Angela Bettis. For Wild Cards I vote to keep everything the same, if that is still under consideration. I can offer more suggestions later if necessary.

House of Psychotic Women - May (2002)

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Should Halloween Ends get automatic inclusion on the subset list like Kills did last year?
I know the general consensus with the last one was, well, not great. We all know it won't be the last Halloween film ever, but it is an event film, and most likely Jamie Lee Curtis's last hurrah. John Carpenter also recently said it was a departure from the others. I think the trailer's coming fairly soon, not that that's indicative of how much evil will be dying tonight. Yes? No?

Maybe future theme?
Night of the Living Studios: stuff from defunct studios, like Carolco, Cannon, etc.

I may also have users guess, then watch my theme to win this year's prize pack (it would be pretty easy and I'd pick a very popular theme). I will speak to Chad about this.

The problem with Halloween Ends is that it will be theatrical only I believe in October. Not the same deal as last year when it was day and date.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Yeah, Universal is being a bit cagey on that front, but their more typical model this year is to send to Peacock at least 45 days after the theatrical release. (And they can take up to 120 days if they want to keep pressing on the theatrical take.) It's still a possibility they'll do a day-and-date Peacock release with Halloween Ends to capitalize on the fact that they'll probably get more streaming viewers in October than November/December, but it's by no means a guarantee.

Would it be stretching things too much to make it the official pick, but also have an alternate pick for those who can't/won't see it theatrically?

I just assumed it would be a day and date release again, otherwise I wouldn't have even brought it up. But no, I'm all for having an alternative pick providing everyone else is.

Seems like it is confirmed right now to be theatrical only. However, as alyxstarr mentioned, that could change. They made the decision to go day and date last year rather suddenly and unexpectedly. I would suggest maybe as an alternate one of the other films in the franchise. I believe we have only done five of them at this point.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

My subset suggestions. I have seen none of these (that's how I roll with subset suggestions), so if anyone thinks one or more don't fit the themes given, do speak up.

Autopsy (1975) [tt0073327] - Giallo ~ Women ~ Flashback
Edge of the Knife (2018) [tt8947034] - Folk ~ Passport (Canada)
The film is in an endangered language (Haida) and was created primarily by indigenous people. It's not labeled as horror everywhere, but it is in the folk horror doc and part of Shudder's collection.
The Last Winter (2006) [tt0454864] - Trek ~ Cosmic
Berberian Sound Studio (2012) [tt1833844] - Synth ~ Psychological
Night of the Lepus (1972) [tt0069005] - Joe Bob ~ Trek ~ Frightfest (Monster) ~ Chronological
The Call of Cthulhu (2005) [tt0478988] - Cosmic ~ Flashback
The 4th Man (1983) [tt0086543] - Writers ~ Giallo ~ Psychological
Fiend Without a Face (1958) [tt0050393] - Frightfest (Monster) ~ Body Horror ~ Flashback
Dearest Sister (2016) [tt4701908] - Frightfest (Ghost) ~ Folk ~ Passport (Laos)
Excision (2012) [tt1984153] - Body Horror ~ Trek ~ Psychological ~ Sleazoid (Porn Stars) ~ Flashback
Island of Lost Souls (1932) [tt0024188] - Mashup (Parks) ~ Frightfest (Monster) ~ Body Horror
The Belko Experiment (2016) [tt1082807] - Mashup (High Rise) ~ Trek ~ Synth
The Uncanny (1977) [tt0076853] - Anthologies ~ Writers
Trouble Every Day (2001) [tt0204700] - Sleazoid (Erotic) ~ Psychological ~ Body Horror ~ Vampires ~ Women
Salome (1922) [tt0013571] - Chronological
The Inheritance (1947) [tt0039492] - Chronological
The Stone Tape (1972) [tt0069316] - Chronological ~ Folk ~ Frightfest (Ghost)
Office Killer (1997) [tt0119819] - Chronological ~ Slashers ~ Flashback
Pretty slim pickings for 1922 -- makes me wish we hadn't burned off Nosferatu as the very first subset pick.
That said, since I know it's hard to get complete sets of four suggestions from people for this theme, and since some people will likely have multiple picks on the subset list anyway, I'll just float the idea that Chad should feel free to pick and choose from everyone's chronologically relevant suggestions if needed -- one person's 1922 suggestion, another's 1947, etc.
Saloum (2021) [tt10756184] - Passport (Senegal)
This looks to be the first horror film ever to come out of Senegal! It was well-received at festivals last year, and it's coming to Shudder in September.
Footprints on the Moon (1975) [tt0071950] - Women ~ Giallo ~ Flashback
This is in the House of Psychotic Women box set, but it's also available outside of that, sometimes under the name Primal Impulse. Both Footprints and The Other Side of the Underneath are discussed in the book, but the latter seems less available, and also from the description I think would likely be... divisive at best. (The other two aren't in the 2012 book at all, but maybe they're in the updated version.)
The Black Phone (2021) [tt7144666] - Telephone ~ Slashers
The Witch Who Came from the Sea (1976) [tt0075433] - Demonic ~ Psychological ~ Women ~ Flashback
Pet Sematary II (1992) [tt0105128] - Halloween ~ Sleazoid (Porn Stars) ~ Zombies

Friday the 13th: Rose Blood, a 92 minute feature length fan film continuing the Tina Shepard storyline from Friday the 13th VII, seems worth mentioning here.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

A few updates/reminders...

  • The subset suggestions up until this post are finally up on post #9. A few were omitted due to already being used. I've been watching a few of them, and, as usual, you're not making this easy. I'll let you know if I need any additional picks from anyone. It's looking fantastic so far.

  • Another reminder that it's still not too late to volunteer for a subset. Just keep in mind there's no waiting around on getting 31 people this year.

  • Don't forget to give your indie/arthouse + comedy crossover picks and take the wildcard poll on post #12 if you haven't. I'll keep the latter running right up until the discussion thread goes up, which will be around the usual time.
