These "October Horror Movie Challenge" threads are for the discussion of the films in the 31 FILM SUBSET list.

The plan is for everyone to watch this film on the October day in the thread title, and to start discussing it the morning of the following day.
You may start discussion early if you want, but the preferred plan is for this to be as much of a group exercise as possible, with all of us viewing it "together" and discussing after.

Of course, you are totally encouraged to participate in these threads even if you haven't watched the movie on the designated day.
Even if you haven't watched it in years, or are not participating in the Horror Challenge, please feel free to chime in.

Spoiler tags aren't always used in here, so if you have yet to see the film BEWARE OF POSSIBLE SPOILERS.

I'm a sucker for coastal/aquatic horror films, the idea of pirate ghosts is really brilliant. It's such a moody slow burn steeped in New England atmosphere. Really a smart plot.

I don't usually see The Fog mentioned among Carpenter's best movies, but I think it is right up there.

Re: "The Fog" Reviews/Discussion - 2017 Horror Challenge

I really enjoy the film, but always feel that it just barely misses classic or great status. It seems to have all the elements, but just lacks something to put it over the top. For me, it might be the characters. They are all decent and the acting seems fine, but I just don't fully like any of them as much as I usually do in a film.

There ain't no fog bank out there....hey, there's a fog bank out there Friggin classic. I prefer this compared to the remake they did by far. A few big name actresses and actors in this. Jaime Lee jumped into the sack pretty damn quick with Tom Atkins...isn't Atkins old enough to be her father?

Love that line too lol!

One of my all time favorites and vastly superior over the remake.
Definitely in the mood for more Carpenter movies.

I think Big Trouble in Little China is another John Carpenter film that doesn't get the respect it deserves, it's long been a personal favorite of mine - so oddball.

Re: "The Fog" Reviews/Discussion - 2017 Horror Challenge

Last time I watched The Fog was in the early 80s, and I really enjoyed watching it. I agree with most everything that's been said, including having a fondness for coastal/aquatic horror.

I was preparing snacks during the opening credits, so when I saw the old man telling the story around the campfire, I thought he was channeling 95% John Houseman. I had to stop and rewind the credits, to confirm, it was in fact John Houseman....

I must have seen Big Trouble over 50 times growing up, as it was on repetitive play on HBO. Love that movie!

Re: "The Fog" Reviews/Discussion - 2017 Horror Challenge

A friend recommended watching The Fog in black and white and I have to say it works so much better this way. The night scenes, particularly with the fog, take on a spookiness that I don't think comes across as well in color. Anyone who likes this movie should try it at least once.

Re: "The Fog" Reviews/Discussion - 2017 Horror Challenge

I love The Fog. It's pretty much all atmosphere, but there's so much to enjoy in that atmosphere. I also like how it's a supernatural slasher. The radio aspect of it was a great device for informational purposes and also to build suspense. The least believable thing in this movie - by far - is the Curtis/Atkins hookup. Strange.

For those who haven't seen the remake, I can only say don't. It's truly awful.

Interesting. I might try that some time.

Re: "The Fog" Reviews/Discussion - 2017 Horror Challenge

The Fog is a movie I saw on VHS and thought it was dreadfully boring. I bought the Scream Factory bluray and it's amazing how a good restoration can have an effect on your enjoyment of a film. The atmosphere was totally lost watching it in poor quality, and it's the movie's biggest strength. So I've definitely earned a new respect for it, it doesn't feel slow for me when I'm enjoying the cinematography so much.
