How you watch your film is up to you. I'm not asking questions .If you cannot watch your assigned film for financial reasons (some are rental only) or just really don't want to spend $3 for a shot at winning some Blu-rays, let me know and I'll assign you another film (likely not from the previously-posted list). I cannot legally obligate you to spend money on this and I also ethically won't do it.

P.S. Streaming Platforms are as of August 30th. I don't know what will change in Spetember, but you can always take a look at https://www.justwatch.com/

Tell me about it! I've been looking for la Main du Diable for the past year. I believe there is a very tiny version on archive.org, but I don't think it has subtitles.

Ah, Gobear beat me to it....

I will set the DVR to a few on the TCM list. Thanks for posting.

I have HBO Max and I've seen the TCM, but it's curated titles not live. Not sure if they will put any of their Oct horror titles up there. One can hope!

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

CHECKLIST CONSTRUCTION

Let's build this!

First off, I don't have near as many entries filled in as usual, but I wanted to go ahead and get this started regardless. The whole banner fiasco set me back a bit so I'm still working on getting some of the previous suggestions added. I'll let you know what we need as I'm updating. Thankfully we're doing exceedingly well on time, which means we don't have to rush it as usual, and I'll even have some extra time to work on the other remaining tasks as I do this.

The usual - Every entry from actors to writers is/will be updated with the exception of the permanent rotating actors (Karloff, Lee, Legosi, & Cushing). Anything beyond that point that's in red has been updated or is a completely new section. A few of last year's entries are still there (e.g. horror film tropes) but will eventually be updated.

Also a question from an earlier suggestion...

I vote no more expansions. I find the checklist to be too unwieldy as is..

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Besides Cushing, Lee, Karloff, and Legosi, I would add Vincent Price as a permanent list fixture. It's not Halloween to me if I don't watch a Vincent Price movie.
Similarly (though probably more controversially), I would add Stephen King permanently to the list of writers (even if that means expanding the list by one).

I'd vote for expanding producer, writer, composer, and make-up artist to have more selections. If not 10, perhaps to 6 or 8? Or adding a few permanent fixtures to those lists that have a wide oeuvre.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Voting no on expansion, every years it's fun to think or plan that I can maybe 100% the checklist as it is but adding more 'optional' stuff would throw me off.

General Comments
  • "Takes Place in..." maybe switch out crypt, high school, library, mountain, on a holiday, and under the sea for others like mansion, hospital, basement, jungle/forest, refinery or power plant, beach, etc.
  • "Shot in Bronson Canyon" - maybe we could expand to 'Shot in Lost Angeles' (Bronson Canyon is in LA) https://variety.com/lists/horror-fil...n-poltergeist/

Ah. I suppose there is a natural pull between those who want to do the minimum on the checklist and want to work in the films they want to see into the criteria -- in which case, more options are better-- and those who want to do 100% of the checklist, in which case fewer options are preferred. I'm still working on the They Shoot Zombies list, so prefer more options that might fit films I'm already hoping to watch in October. But I am now reminded that some try to do 100%.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

I originally wanted more options until I was reminded that some do 100% of the list so I vote no to more options for producer, writer, composer, and make-up artists. I would like to see the rest of the list remain with potentially more things added that Chad or others think of. I think the checklist is great right now.

I'm glad to see that others understand the fun of taking movies that you want to see and trying to fit them into the criteria of the checklist. To me, that is half the fun of this challenge. I llove the movies (I must to try to watch 100 movies in one month) but it is also enjoyable to have the direction of the checklist to help mold your movie list. I particularly enjoy the Horror challenge because Chad (with the help of others) is great at changing things up each challenge. I wish I was someone who could do 100% of the checklist but I'm just not able to watch that many movies in October. Maybe some year I will give it a shot or even try to finish it in November. It is something I need to think about.

Yes, it is half the fun. Last year I think there were only about 4 or 5 films I "had" to watch to finish the checklist that I otherwise wouldn't have. Most of the time I can fit the films I want to see in somewhere. But, ya know, it's good to be pushed to watch some flicks here and there. That's *always* the case with the subset list. I think I've watched all of the subset picks every year I've participated, and some of those I would definitely never have been viewed otherwise. There are some on this year's subset list too. Expanded horizons!

Composers: Tyler Bates Don't think he's been used before and has a lot of options. Or Geoff Barrow not as many entries though.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Wanted to chime in and agree with orlmac and jholmes about how much value the checklist adds to watching movies during the challenge; years ago I was skeptical but it's been a surprisingly interesting/enjoyable even if it led me to watching Boardinghouse a second time for the accursed Diary item. Each year I go through the previous challenges for some ideas and find a lot in people's checklist (which gives me a checklist checklist of options hopefully better than Boardinghouse).

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

I like that I can't complete the checklist just from what might already be on my watchlist -- I think it should be a little challenging, take a little effort/focus/planning to complete. And I also love that -- like the subset list -- it encourages horror-viewing diversity (variety of eras, subgenres, budgets/"quality" of films), and love-slash-hate that it forces me outside of my comfort zone sometimes, to watch things I never would have otherwise. My personal opinion is that the checklist is at a pretty good size/level currently, and I wouldn't be too keen on expanding further if the primary goal would be to make it easier to complete. (Besides, making it larger might in fact bring about the demise of tarfrimmer, who "100%, all unique"s the checklist pretty much every year. )

I'm actually juuust about done with phase one of a little data project I've been working on here and there, involving checklist data. Just have to finish QCing the IMDb IDs, and then I can spit out some random statistics/"fun facts" for anyone who might be interested. (Just me? Probably just me. ) So far it's just the "person" sections of the checklists (actors, directors, etc.) -- did you know that, over the 15 years that the checklist has been part of OHMC, we've collectively checked off close to 10,000 "person" entries? That involves about 130 different participants (there are a few who literally checked off a single person entry in one year), over 600 unique names (including recently deceased and female directors in recent years), and over 2,000 unique film titles.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

I'd wager that if we took an informal poll on the difficulty of last year's checklist it would be labeled overwhelmingly easyier, at least compared to previous years. In a followup question asking whether or not you'd consider that a positive or negative attribute it would probably be split down the middle. Here's hoping we can find a good middle ground for this year's.

Anyway, here's this year's unfiltered RIP list. I will remove the under 5 entries for the official post in the main thread that the checklist entry will direct to.

Lawrence Dane could be added to the R.I.P. list. He passed in March.

Type in an actor's name at IMDB, click on the result, scroll down to Filmography. On the right is a drop-down box that says Show By. Click on it, then click on Genre. A box will pop up with the various film genres of the actor's films, and you click on how you want to sort them.
