How you watch your film is up to you. I'm not asking questions .If you cannot watch your assigned film for financial reasons (some are rental only) or just really don't want to spend $3 for a shot at winning some Blu-rays, let me know and I'll assign you another film (likely not from the previously-posted list). I cannot legally obligate you to spend money on this and I also ethically won't do it.

P.S. Streaming Platforms are as of August 30th. I don't know what will change in Spetember, but you can always take a look at https://www.justwatch.com/

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

It's a bummer to see Challenge regulars like jholmes, mallratcal, and some others not in on the Subsets this year but hopefully the trade off in less 'house keeping' will lead to an altogether more enjoyable year for everyone.
Even if not selected for a subset I enjoy the recommendations for themes people post here - added a few more to my list.

No, he did not. jholmes put his name on the list and quoted it. I'm not against him being on there, but just want to make things easier for Chad and he did say that subset volunteering was closed. If jholmes was let in, then mallratcal and others would need to be as well (to be fair), and that is more work at this late stage for Chad at this point.

^I have a way to squeeze them both in, but it will have to be a limited time offer.

Last thing I wanna do is deny someone a volunteer spot if I don't have to. There's room for a couple more. In fact, not only will adding two more not effect the current placement, but I'll still be able to get it up before weekend's end (maybe before) as originally planned.

Those themes are all currently filled, and the odds of them being shuffled around last-minute are minimal, so I've sent you both PMs to get picks for the current four unfilled themes - Holiday, Video, Halloween (alternate pick), and Vampires. There's really 3, that last one's a just in case backup. As long as you can get me the picks before the list goes up you'll be on it.

That being said, and I say this with peace and love, I can't take anymore beyond this point. They are the only two to express interest in volunteering past the deadline, so nobody at this point is being denied.

On August 11, 2021 we were literally just starting the subset building. That's how far ahead we currently are.

Since that's now set in stone, if anyone has suggestions for theme/subset assigned dates let me know.

Yes, I added myself to that list. I just went right to the subset post, saw there were only 23 people, and thought we were supposed to add to it. This is the first time this year I've had a chance to check the forum and hadn't read all the messages.
I'm totally fine with *not* doing a subset. I love the idea of having the list early so I can organize my picks, so the new process works for me! But Chad asked me to submit some for categories he still needs, so I will do that.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Some picks: None of these were on the rbrown list of previous subset picks that I could see.

Holiday - Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984) or Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010)

Video - Day of the Woman (1978)

Halloween - the imdb list shows Last Night in Soho (2021) on the Halloween list, though not sure why. That or Antlers (2021)

Vampires - Day Shift (2022- Netflix), 30 Days of Night (2007)

Thanks for squeezing me in, Chad!

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

I don't normally reveal subsets before the official release, but there's a Shout! Factory sale on the Select titles that ends tomorrow (Monday August 15, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. PT), and one of them just so happens to be a subset, so...

The 'Burbs (1989)

It's currently not on Hamilton. Of course there's a cheaper edition from Universal with just an alternate ending and trailer, plus the other choices from Arrow, Umbrella, etc.

I recommend that Shout edition. I love that fucking movie and one of the bonus features is a work print cut of the film. It’s in SD, but it’s still great to see.

I tried, but it's gonna have to be postponed until Monday night.

And I'll just get this out of the way now...

For anyone that requested a specific theme I tried to accommodate your request. Apologies if I didn't, although I think I did for the most part.

We had 25 volunteers, so 6 extra volunteer spots. There were 3 extra spots for the Chrono (not limiting it to one person anymore), 2 extra spots from The Frightfest Guide (3 books, 3 subsets), and OCD got the best of me so I added one extra spot to another theme. And since the extra Halloween pick is by group decision, that's 12 total extra spots with a different person used for each. That resulted in some people having up to 3 picks.

Please do not take it personally if you have fewer picks. There are even a couple of you that only have one pick that's part of a multi-theme (chrono & fright fest). It just worked out that way. Generally those with more suggestions had more picks used, and it's really just a matter of trying to get a little of everything onto the list.

The next post from me will be the subset list.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Here's the 2022 Subset List in no particular order (aside from a few assigned dates) with the physical media and streaming guide included. The theme/subset hybrid table with all the bells and whistles is coming sooner than later, and same goes for the subset threads. Until that time the current status of the assigned dates can be found on post #26 of the pre-challenge thread.

As always, an eclectic mix with a few classics, modern, 2 OHMC "favorites", some gory, psychotronic, Gothic, obscure, 2 from the knighted centennial man of the hour, erotic, family-friendly, a 53 minute film ...from the 80s, avant-garde, some uncaged Cage, cheeseball, a urinating grandmother, some anaglyph 3-D, foreign, an event film, a film that hasn't had a release since VHS, and Vincent Gallo ejaculating into a bathtub. Quite a few have recent first-time Blu-ray and UHD releases (a new record this year) and upgrades.

If I missed something please let me know and I'll update accordingly. Comments welcome.

All dates have been assigned.

Tubi, The Roku Channel, Freevee (formerly "IMDb TV"), Pluto TV, Redbox and Crackle = w/ ads. There's probably a few more that I'm not familiar with.

Getting reliable information on what's region free with foreign releases can be a time-consuming endeavor, so aside from a few exceptions, didn't list that info.

Not every standard foreign release is listed, unless it's the only option. Focusing on the notable releases.

Spoiler:
For the first time ever the indie/arthouse votes had no duplicates, so random.org decided that outcome.

Scratch what I said earlier about "up to 3 picks" ...clckworang and Darkgod both have 4. Last-minute shakeup. Long story. That also resulted in a theme promised to someone being switched to another (and Night Train going to supernatural, which it does technically fit). My apologies, but it was the only way to do so without replacing something.

That's a nice looking subset list!

Lots of picks on there I had already been planning to see, too.

Epic subset list; Im excited. Thank you to Chad for organizing everything so wonderfully and the crew for some top tier (and a few delightfully bottom of barrel) picks.

Terrific subset list!. I already have most of them in my library, and digging up the rest shouldn't be difficult.

I found this old coffee commercial on YouTube, and you can play a scene with Boris Karloff!
