100 Movies. 31 Days. The 6th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)

2005 | 2006 | 2007 | 2008 | 2009

DISCUSSION THREAD #1 | DISCUSSION THREAD #2 | DISCUSSION THREAD #3

100 Movies. 31 Days. October 1st - 31st, 2010

THE ORIGINAL SHIT-TON OF FUN.

___________________________________________________________________

THIS THREAD IS FOR DISCUSSION ONLY!

THE "RULES"
Since 2005 the goal of the challenge has been to reach 100 horror films in a month's time. Obviously this is not an attainable goal for everyone, so your personal goal is as high or as low as you choose. Whether it's achieved, surpassed, or not even close to being reached, the ultimate goal here is to enjoy yourself while conversing with fellow horror fans.
As always, there will be a separate list thread posted roughly 2 weeks prior to the start date. Be creative and personalize your list however you wish - give reviews, post pics, link to your blog or start one on your page, provide IMDB links with your titles, add YouTube videos, include running times (calculating total times is up to you), etc. The forum software now allows for unlimited post length, although you're still welcome to post it in a weekly or biweekly format. It's also highly recommended that you provide a link to the list in your signature for easier access.

The only mandatory rule here is NUMBER YOUR LISTS!

If you're uncertain of the title's genre classification the IMDB and allmovie are the go-to sources for determining its potential horror movie status.
Of course, both sites have been known to make the occasional error and if you feel that's the case asking in the discussion thread is advised.
Just keep in mind that the main deciding factor regarding what counts is you and you alone.

What qualifies?

Movies = 1 entry (despite running time)

TV shows count according to length as they're aired on TV (including commercials):
30 minute shows = ¼ an entry
1 hour shows = ½ an entry
2 hour shows = 1 entry

Mini-Series = 1 entry for each day it aired

Commentaries count. (no restrictions)

Documentaries count.

MORE DETAILED INFO:
Spoiler:

Concerning TV shows and shorts films:

Like the other challenges, you need four 30 minute shows for 1 entry and two hour-long shows for 1 entry. 30 minute shows typically run roughly 22 - 24 minutes without commercials and hour-long shows are roughly 43 - 45 minutes. If it's short films that are 10 minutes or less, once you hit around 23 minutes of watching them, you've reached one 30 minute show (¼ an entry). Any combination that gets you to 90 minutes can be used for 1 entry. And this is not an exact science, so if you're off by a little it's really no big deal.

Simply Put:

Feature FilmsCounts as 1 entry
Short FilmsAdd them up to total 90 minutes to get 1 entry
Television ShowsAdd them up to 120 minutes (including commercials) to get 1 entry

When listing the TV shows try to keep them together in 1 entry.
Example: 30 min show/30 min show/30 min show/30 min show

For the sake of organization, it's advised that you keep a Temporary TV section at the bottom of your list until you get enough for an entry.

Why 90 minutes? Because we're keeping the continuity going with the other challenges.

Every facet of horror counts: Horror-comedies, Sci-Fi horror, wretchedly bad horror [Insert Current Remake Here], kiddie horror, creature features, erotic horror, Masters of Horror, silents, made-for-TV movies, etc.
Sometime in November there will be a results thread posted. If you wish to be included in the stats provided (aside from your number ranking), please include the following in your list:

- First time viewings. The ☼ is a commonly used symbol.
- Formats viewed. (BD, DVD, HD DVD, etc.) Blue text is often used to indicate Blu-rays.
- Your personal goal. Even if it happens to be the challenge's goal of 100.

Something might go here eventually. Stay tuned!
The formats and how you watch them is strictly your call -- DVD, Blu-ray, HD DVD, at the theater, on television, public domain downloads (links provided below), VHS, Laserdisc, Video On Demand, Netflix, UMD, MiniDV, CED, Unbox, through your neighbor's window, Apple TV, Watch Instantly, Hulu, Youtube, Payperview, Betamax, via laptop, netbook, VCD, Android phone, iPhone, iPad...you name it. And yes, that even includes the pan & scan edited-for-television movies that air on TBS with multiple pop-ups and commercial interruptions (NOT recommended!). Just make sure the film is viewed in it's entirety.
Keep it civil. We're here to have fun, so please don't take this thing too seriously.
You're welcome to include non-genre titles viewed during the month in your list, but please don't number them.

OPTIONAL

SEE POST 2 OR THE LIST THREAD FOR MORE DETAILS.

THEME NIGHTS
THE CHECKLIST
31 FILMS SUBSET
3 WILD CARDS
Back with a vengeance and better than ever, this adds daily "themes" that include various links to horror sub-genres, studios, actors, directors and even a group marathon. This year's list is COMING SOON.
Complete it and feel a sense of accomplishment. The Expanded Checklist is COMING SOON.

Please include within spoiler tags to keep the list thread from running a mile long.
Watch these 31 films on the listed day, with group discussion starting the next morning. Or don't watch them but still join the discussion.

And don't forget the threads from the 2009 List and the Horror Film Club List are also being used for individual discussion. This year's list is COMING SOON.
Use for those shows that really don't count but they're kinda, sorta borderline close.

HELPFUL TIPS

Provide a link to your list in your signature.
Review it. Even if it's just a mini-review, a simple thumbs up / thumbs down or one word description.
If you're doing a checklist, putting it in a spoiler tag makes the list thread much easier to read.
Increase your coffee consumption.
Insomniac? Use your disadvantage to your advantage!
Work from home? Ditto.
Skip the supplemental material ...there's always November for that!
Boredom setting in? Watch another movie!
Try not to get too caught up in the numbers. Stay within your comfort level.
ENJOY YOURSELF!

Xbox users -- Have a Netflix Party:

Spoiler:
Are you a Netflix subscriber with an Xbox gold membership? Wanna have a NETFLIX PARTY?
If so, post your gamertag or send it via PM to Mister Peepers.

SEND A FRIEND REQUEST TO DVDTalkHorror to join the parties.

Feel free to host a party whenever you want.
If you're watching something check the DVDTalkHorror friend's list and invite people!

Just go to Friends ---> DVDTalkHorror ---> Personal Profile ---> View Friends.
And then you can just invite whoever is online on that list into a party.
Recently, Microsoft updated the Netflix player on the 360. Among the changes is the addition called 'Netflix Parties'. Basically someone is a host and invites people to watch a movie together. Everyone watches it at the same time, and we can communicate w/ voice during the movie.

You need an Xbox 360, a gold account, and a Netflix subscription. There's only one catch: For right now, Starz Play and Disney movies are not allowed to be used for parties.

We can use this thread to pick out movies and times to watch them. We can try to vary things up.

While we can watch classics or stuff we've all seen, I think it would be interesting to check out stuff that the entire group may not have watched. We could even take a gamble and watch god knows what. I think even some riffing on intentionally bad movies could be good for a laugh if done sparingly.

Your OP always manages to get me pumped up, Chad...though I must admit, it doesn't take much. For the last several years, I've found myself avoiding horror films throughout the year saving them for October.

I agree with cardsfan - The opening post made me wish it was October 1st!

Might I suggest we try and get the 31 films decided sooner than later so that people can coordinate getting titles that they might not own or have access to?

Shooting for 101 but not sure if that's realistic (horror movies vs toddler?) but already planing to call in sick to work several days.

That's an easy call.

Awesome job on the OP, Chad. I wish I knew how to put a table in a post. I've wanted to a few of times over the years.

Thanks for the TCM schedule, Chad. I would've liked to see some new additions (I'm guessing TCM never has rights to show Universal product) but it's cool to see them add plenty of Hammer titles.

No kidding!!!

However, as I mentioned in the previous thread, I'm probably going to start early. Kind of a warm-up before the real thing. I always seem to spend the week before getting super-excited and then get really busy at the start of the challenge therefore not starting until a week or so late.

NOT THIS YEAR!!

When I want to watch horror, I'm gonna watch horror!

MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ya, I kinda double posted. But I figured that nobody is going to go to that thread now that this one is up.

I'm always in for this one! Won't be very active this year (first year with a full time job) but I'm going to try and do my best. My goal is currently 50, but hope to do more.

I'm so ready for this. I still will likely have less than stellar numbers, though.

I'm excited. I haven't done this since the first time I was in on it. I think it was the first year of this challenge. But I'm excited to do this again. Expecting 50 with a stretch goal of 75.

My 3rd year. Really looking forward to it. I've already been planning my own "theme nights" for this year.

Reserved. I'm not looking to do as well as I had before. I've been able to increase my score every year
I don't see that happening this time.
