These "October Horror Movie Challenge" threads are for the discussion of the films in the 31 FILM SUBSET list.
The plan is for everyone to watch this film on the October day in the thread title, and to start discussing it the morning of the following day.
You may start discussion early if you want, but the preferred plan is for this to be as much of a group exercise as possible, with all of us viewing it "together" and discussing after.
Of course, you are totally encouraged to participate in these threads even if you haven't watched the movie on the designated day.
Even if you haven't watched it in years, or are not participating in the Horror Challenge, please feel free to chime in.
Spoiler tags aren't always used in here, so if you have yet to see the film BEWARE OF POSSIBLE SPOILERS.

Really enjoyed the unusual setup of this and the creatures are very well done. The premise is a bit far out and feels engineered for this type of 'silent film' style to the point of being a little pretentious but so well paced and atmospheric that it's standout. With the family dynamics it's also more dramatic and 'meaningful,' that no one is expendable, and the baby is an impossible situation.
The silence is 'deafening' much of the time with near total sound blackout and that felt immersive, the subtle sound design is the real hero here.
Not a cliffhanger ending - why?!?
Jim from Dunder Mifflin has come a long way.
I'm a little disappointed to 'hear' (get it?) they're making a sequel, this is a really good film but the premise itself it probably one of it's weaker qualities and I cannot see another installment being as effectively executed - sometimes less is more.

I bumped my rating up from 6.5 to 7.5 out of 10 after giving this one a second viewing. The film is incredibly tense, but you cannot be distracted when you watch it. I still think the "flower face" monsters are all too common lately, but overall i like the film.

**SPOILERS**
I watched this about three months ago and again tonight. It's super tense throughout. Terrific production values. Nice scenery. One thing that annoyed me the first time, and more on a second viewing, is the daughter. She's constantly making bad decisions that end up killing people and being a whiny little twat. I just want to smack her.
And at the end -- I was screaming about the earpiece feedback the first time it happened. And it happens like 3 more times before she figures it out. Meanwhile, the dad dies because she doesn't get it. Ugh, so frustrating. Those things bring it down to a 5/10 for me.

So nice to finally have gotten around to seeing this after all the general talk about it being one of the best horror films of the year elsewhere. I was especially piqued due to my hearing loss. I watched this without my hearing aids on coincidentally so I didn’t have the intense sound moments for scares & still found the sense of dread/intensity of the situation to be wonderfully done.
Understandable that the daughter could appear annoying to some but from what I’ve witnessed in real life fully deaf/hard of hearing children deal a lot of being left out when trying to understand the world around them (I have also experienced this firsthand) which can cause them to lash out at times though the parents did try to include her there is the feeling of still missing out on certain sounds which puts them at a disadvantage especially in this kind of situation so makes it extra tense or being overprotected by your parents (even though understandable due to what happened in the beginning of the film & her disadvantage in a dangerous world) so it is somewhat relatable to me even if I can’t fully relate to total deafness (as I can hear loud sounds without hearing aids typically) I can see how it may be frustrating to watch at times if you aren’t in her shoes. She also doesn’t have any other individuals surrounding her that she can relate with fully so it can be even more isolating and children can be more vulnerable overall or have a hard time getting across how they feel to others.
I wished the father didn’t have to sacrifice himself as felt they could have possibly thrown something to make a different sound distraction while escaping in another direction but I thought it was a very well done suspenseful film.

I also don’t think a sequel is necessary but would probably check it out being curious.

Not nearly as enjoyable the second viewing. Great acting and premise, but the flaws show through and the “twist” is hard to forget. Doubt I’ll watch this one again alone, but maybe good for a group viewing with first-timers to it.

First time view and I thought it was really well done. I'm not entirely sure of how this will hold up next time, but I was really impressed the first time around.
I'm not really surprised by an insolent teenager, being just that. Even if there are monsters afoot, teenagers will still be teenagers. She doesn't even have an outlet to commiserate with other teenagers, as she's stuck with her family 24/7.

I've only seen it once, and echo most of the comments here. I thought it was well-done, tense, and overall enjoyable. I wish they could have done something else with the father sacrificing himself.
I wasn't aware there was a sequel planned, but it seems entirely unnecessary.
