Re: "Club Dread" Reviews/Discussion - 2014 Horror Challenge: Day 4

I was glad to have a chance at revisiting this. Club Dread is a potentially great idea, having a horror movie on a festive bright island party but all the characters are so unlikeable and the "humor" so hit/miss that it falls. Bill Paxton puts on a good show as Coconut Pete but it's hard to believe this is from the same people are the largely effective comedy of Super Troopers. The "And Then There Were None" style whodunnit elements work better than some of the other early 1990s slashers (I Know What you Did Last Summer). Since this other movies, like the Piranha remake, have gone on to combine summer fun and horror more effectively but despite the misfire I appreciated Club Dread. I downloaded an "Unrated" cut, not sure what the difference is from theatrical.

Most forgettable "villain" ever.

I really liked the beginning where we watch the grisly murder of some characters before the film rewinds to have us follow them; that's clever. The boat standoff and unstoppable killer are great.

Re: "Club Dread" Reviews/Discussion - 2014 Horror Challenge: Day 4

F*** this movie and everything it stands for.

Watching pitiful human beings be pitiful human beings isn't funny. It's putrid. This was like watching an Adult Disney Channel movie. The characters are so goddamn deplorable that I actually cheered on the big bad. Until the actual goddamn reveal. F*** it all. I feel bad for the people who were in this, since their names are now forever attached to the production. I don't care if this was a parody. It was godawful. These movies are constantly making fun of the horror genre, which isn't in itself a bad thing. But I get the impression they're too lazy to make an actual horror flick because it's easier to make tons of sex jokes than actually scare someone. This shit was lazy, and it's rather telling if I feel less effort from this than something like Annabelle or Stalled.

Putman was least worst victim.

.5/5.

Re: "Club Dread" Reviews/Discussion - 2014 Horror Challenge: Day 4

I love this movie. It is easily my favorite Broken Lizard flick and I loved it from the first time I saw it. It is one of those films that gets better with repeat viewings, especially when you share it with friends and maybe take a toke or two.

I think it has the perfect blend of humor, horror, gore, nudity, sex, and parody. Even though I love it, I will admit that the unrated version runs too long at 2 hours. This should be a tight 95 minute movie but I haven't seen the original version (which runs at 105 minutes) since it was first released.

There are some great lines and Bill Paxton steals the movie with his Jimmy Buffet ripoff character. "Fuck that guy. Son of a son of a bitch!"

I could also look at Brittany Daniel's body all day long. Damn, her stomach! The Pac-Man scene is genius, the final "will not die" killer, the tons of stereotypical red herrings, and a nice array of tits keeps me happy. Even though I have seen the movie a dozen times, I was still laughing out loud at many parts, lines and songs even watching it by myself.

If only they would release a true soundtrack and include Coconut Pete's songs. I would love to have this one on BD as well.

I know comedy is subjective but I will take a movie like this over something like "Stalled" any day.

My rating: ****1/2 out of *****

Ugh I'm already pissed. We're supposed to be believing the guy is getting head yet when he gets killed, his shorts are still pretty much on and underwear hasn't been removed. Not saying I want a penis, but these types of sex scenes just piss me off so much in movies. People can't have sex with underwear still on. Ugh. And I'm only 5 minutes in

Re: "Club Dread" Reviews/Discussion - 2014 Horror Challenge: Day 4

I love Club Dread. Yes, it's a light, sex-crazed slasher comedy, but it's a fun one. And honestly, the resort is pretty accurate from what I vaguely remember about my Cancun trip way back when.

I think the Pac-Man maze was ingenious. Would love to see something like that in real life.

I think the only place the film is really lacking is the lack of creativity in the kills. Not saying it needs gore, but at least something a little different/funny/unique rather than machete slashing and electrocution.

My parents are huge parrotheads and I grew up drowning in all that Jimmy Buffet junk, so it definitely delights me to see him mocked in this.

A push to the side. That man-flap opening thingy. It's pretty easy. And it all sort of shifts back into place on its own. Just sayin'.

The penis just doesn't magically shrink back in a few seconds after they get off, especially if he doesn't. Maybe for a female, a push to the side, sure easy. For a man, even with the man-flap, guy would still be rocking a hard on and pushing through that flap. Just lazy work done all around.

You sound like my wife the first time she saw Ace Ventura Pet Detective.

Dude, it's a comedy. Not a porno. You are seriously complaining about this?

I think you better go ahead and turn off the movie.

I'm starting to have the issue with this in a lot of films. Like I said, you don't need to show the penis, just don't scan that part of the body. I mean, the movie is already showing tits, just don't be a lazy photographer. It's like showing a half bottle of liquid in one scene then 30 seconds later it's magically filled.

Maybe Jacob_b isn't watching the unrated edition?

It's a fair point how modest a gory slasher featuring decapitation and graphic hanging is about even visually implying sex. I don't think a penis would have jumped the shark now that the point has been made.

Thank you. I'm not sure which version I'm watching, it's on Google Docs. But I mean, they showed guy's hairy bush, so yeah, filmmaker being lazy. Overall, almost done with the film, wasn't as bad as I expected. Some characters I liked or didn't annoy me. Will post more when completely finished.

This one reminds me quite a bit of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, except that ISKWYDLS was more on a serious note. I must have seen this film a million times and each time I find it just as enjoyable to watch as the last time. I may just watch this one a second time during this challenge who knows?

Paused halfway thru. I thought this was supposed to be funny? More later if my brain is still functioning afterwards.

Re: "Club Dread" Reviews/Discussion - 2014 Horror Challenge: Day 4

Ok, as a straight horror film it wasn't completly horrible. Nothing original, but not much that was outright awful. Paxton was decent, nice to see him play something different from his norm.

But I didn't laugh until just before The End when they showed the killers lower half attempting to swim.

1 or 2 out of 5

I'm with you on this one, Spider. I enjoyed Club Dread the first time that I saw it around 10 years ago, and I enjoyed it this time as well. I'm not trying to suggest that Club Dread is going to replace Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein or Young Frankenstein in the short list of great horror comedies, but I feel that it succeeds in what it set out to do, which is to amuse an audience for 104 minutes.

I love the skewering of Jimmy Buffett, as I've NEVER understood his appeal. From the fake album titles (Pink Crustaceans and Good Vibrations, Sea Shanties and Wet Panties) to the fake songs ("Pina Coladaburg," "I'd Tell You, But I'd Have Tequila"), Coconut Pete amuses me in the way that MAD Magazine amused me when I was twelve. In fact, to me the whole film kind of has a MAD vibe to it.

One of the few Broken Lizard movies I truly enjoy.

I think this was one of the last times Jordan Ladd looked yummy. Because (A few days ago) I saw her in Grace (2009) and, maybe it was because the role demanded it, but she looked like she had aged 20+years.

Re: "Club Dread" Reviews/Discussion - 2014 Horror Challenge: Day 4

C'mon, this movie was a lot of fun. A couple jokes fell flat, but for the most part I found it to be pretty amusing. I love watching a good spoof like this during the challenge, it helps break up some of the more grim fare I typically watch. I'm glad this was a subset pick and I finally got around to watching it.

I love this movie. I feel like it is the underated Broken Lizard's movie since it was sandwiched between Supertroopers and BeerFest. Everytime i watch this i get a new line or joke that I love.

Ever since watching Club Dread I've been poking my finger around my upper lip looking for the "heaven spot," I guess it's true you can't believe everything you see on TV.
