Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 12: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl
Why not include 'Halloween' in the holiday horror theme and make that theme day October 31st? Every year on Halloween we have a Halloween movies theme, including all holidays on the 31st could keep it fresh and emphasize that as we enter the Thanksgiving/Christmas season there's always room for more horror. Also many holiday horror movies are intended to be comedic so it'd make a good segue way to November's comedy challenge.
Do birthdays count as a holiday? If birthdays are included that also should expand the 'holiday' theme more.Tack seances onto supernatural imo, but seances should be on the checklist.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 12: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl
A couple questions:
1. The Christmas Horror theme is most likely going to make the cut. Since it doesn't have enough titles to be a standalone theme, would everyone be alright if we expanded it to holiday horror (excluding Halloween)? I found this 3-year-old link with 33 titles. I *think* we can get it up to the minimum 50 needed if we add some recent and overlooked titles from the list.
2. The Seances theme. Is this theme different enough from the Ghosts theme to include it as a standalone, or should we tack it on to "Supernatural & Quiet/Soft"? Just asking.

*I totally pulled this number out of my ass. There are only 40 listed on the Criterion website page of "Scary Films," but this isn't counting movies released on Criterion laserdiscs and/or available for streaming only...so I'm guesstimating there are about 80 (or so).

Mostly what rbrown498 said.
(I'm the one who suggested Christmas horror so I guess not a totally unbiased opinion here.)
I do think there are plenty of Christmas-themed horror films out there to choose from to watch over the course of just one day. That being said, while I would personally stick to Christmas for a theme, I wouldn't want to limit others to it if everyone thinks it's too restrictive and wants to expand it to include other holidays.
That being said, I strongly feel 10/31 should be restricted to Halloween/Samhain. It's kind of THE holiday of October AND horror so I feel it should be given its own special day, ya know?

Agreed. Halloween has to have it's own day. Out of all the themes, that's the one I would always vote to keep.

Keep Christ in Christmas! LOL. I have no problem with expanding it, but we have done holiday horror, but never just Xmas exclusively. There are lots of Christmas horror films!
Going through Fangoria's worst film picks, while some are truly bad, you'd still have a pretty good lineup watching these on Fango day!

I concur. I can't imagine myself watching a Christmas movie on Halloween, horror or not. It's like the "last hurrah" for horror for a while.

I think there's enough Christmas to keep it that way.
I don't consider birthdays to be holidays. I think that's stretching things a bit.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 12: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl
There shouldn't be a problem coming up with enough Christmas movies. I can probably name 50 of them off the top of my head.
IMDb has a list of 193 Christmas Horror titles. Although some of them probably just have a Christmas scene, and aren't actually a Christmas movie.
http://www.imdb.com/search/keyword?k...ef_=kw_ref_gnr
Anyways, expanding it to Holiday Horror sounds like a good idea. That'll make it easier for everyone to find something good to watch.

Anyway, I'll leave it like it is for the time being and go with the whatever the general consensus is. There's no rush on it, and no point in holding up the subset and checklist choosing. And I do plan on kicking off subset picking tonight after the remaining winning themes are announced, BTW.

I personally kinda like the "holiday" theme idea. If the majority wants Christmas specific though, maybe we could try "Holiday" next year, which could cover all holiday-type days. You have your obvious: Christmas, New Years, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day,etc... but it could also include other unofficial, "holiday-like" events like birthdays, April Fool's Day, Friday the 13th, Mardi Gras, etc... which all have movies that take place during.

Alright, here are your remaining themes that made the cut:
Curses was the clear winner by a long shot.
The Runner-up (which may end up being used after all) was a 3-way tie, so I settled it via Random.org:
And scratch was I said earlier about subset building starting tonight. There's still some things that need doing before starting, and I want to do it right. Look for it tomorrow or Friday at the very latest.
In the meantime, be thinking of what subsets (backups picks are encouraged) you'll be suggesting if you haven't already, but please don't list them just yet. As per usual, they'll be synced up with the themes list on page 3, which is currently incomplete at the moment.
Also, there's still those 5 unoccupied subset spots up for the taking:
- Curses
- Insects (+ Killer Animals and Giant Monsters)
- Careful with that Axe, Eugene
- Christmas Horror
- Public Domain Horrors
- Conspiracy / Political Horror

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 12: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl
So I went ahead and tacked on "Seances" to the ghost theme. I know not everyone will agree with that, but it was for a reason. The runner-up (Conspiracy/Political) was chosen by random.org after the aforementioned 3-way tie, and I see that as fate ...especially considering it's an election year. That, and I felt a little shitty for accidentally excluding it as a suggestion. That's my justification and I'm sticking with it.
Whoever ends up choosing a subset synced with that theme, just make sure it's a film that deals specifically with seances so it can be the main emphasis.
I also paired up the Fango Chainsaw Awards with the Mass Marathon. That can changed later if need be. Just needed a spot.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 12: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl
As promised I will start the subset building tonight. Took a brief hiatus to get the discussion thread up, which hopefully helps bring in more for the subsets. Totally planned it that way.
And while looking over the themes we'll be syncing them up with, I noticed we forgot to choose the company for The 1980's Video Companies Spotlight. I went ahead and chose Embassy Home Entertainment since it seems to be the biggest after Vestron, which we did last year:
Embassy Home Entertainment Cover Art
Embassy Home Entertainment Titles
Lots of goodies like The Slumber Party Massacre, Galaxy of Terror, Scanners, John Carpenter's The Fog, Psychic Killer, Screamers, Phantasm, The Brood, The Video Dead and The Vampire Lovers just to name a few.
If anyone has any objections to this one let me know.

The Annual Building of the 31 Film Subset Starts Here!
The subset list is comprised of 33 films (one for each day of the month + two crossover themes) with their own individual discussion threads. It syncs with theme nights.
2008 LIST | 2009 LIST | HFC LIST | 2010 LIST | 2011 LIST | 2012 LIST | 2013 LIST | 2014 LIST | 2015 LIST
All the films in alphabetical order (273 and counting):
By year (All the previous Subset tables):
If you need a little inspiration, here's some films that surprisingly still haven't been used:
We only need 4 more subset volunteers as of this post.

1. Look over the theme nights list. When making your selection it's always a good idea to have a few backup choices that sync with several themes because a) someone may have already claimed your subset suggestion and b) there's no guarantee your suggestion will make the final cut if several others have picks with the same themes attached.
2. Before making your selection(s) avoid repeats by checking what we've used in previous years:

Make sure your picks are readily accessible by avoiding OOP and extremely hard-to-find titles. Streaming isn't mandatory, but it does help to reach a wider audience. And if you are aware of a streaming link, please provide it when posting your picks.

My pick is Green Room (2016) for whatever theme it syncs up with.
Also The Witch (2015) for Demonic Possession / Satanic / Witchcraft / Hell.
That's all I can think of at the moment.
