Here's one more for my list
Race with the Devil
Themes: Dark Shadows 50th Anniversary, Fanaticism (Religious) Horror, Satanic
Where: internet and stores
I'm not going to call youtube an illegitimate streaming site. I think that's going overboard a lot if you've looked into their copyright protection system.
I know in the past it was asked to pick things that could be easily seen because not everyone is going to want to spend $60+ on digital rentals or video subscriptions for things that are only on Netflix or only on Hulu, or Amazon streaming. We also had one of the members setting up films on their google account for those of us without access.
Could we have one section in the OP that links to some popular rental/subscription sites, like vudu, amazon, netflix, hulu, others? Then also have a link to a private facebook group where we can do the things we've done in the past, with youtube links and the one member that had movies on his google account? That way we're also helping those that aren't in the US, so none of those normal rental/subscriptions sites work, and for anyone else that just doesn't care about non-pay youtube links?

We're now down to only 3 subset volunteers needed. The suggestions list is also up-to-date as of this posting.
And please only provide free streaming links if they're available when giving subset suggestions. I removed all the paid ones from the list to avoid clutter, and just kept the free ones. I'll provide links for both free and paid sites once the individual threads go up. Honestly, finding the paid sites can be accomplished with a quick Google search. For example, a two second search for The Final Girls (2015) brings up five options - Amazon, YouTube, iTunes, Vudu and Google Play ...all $2.99.

So, yeah, this is my yearly plea for everyone to at least consider picking a real, true horror classic for your subset pick. As I've said before, why should we settle for dog food when we can have filet mignon? There are still dozens of classics and semi-classics that we've never chosen for subset picks--movies such as:
Alien (1979)
The Birds (1963)
The Black Cat (1934)
The Body Snatcher (1945)
Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
Carrie (1976)
The Curse of Frankenstein (1957)
The Fly (1958)
The Fly (1986)
The Fog (1980)
Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943)
The Ghost of Frankenstein (1942)
House of Frankenstein (1944)
House of Dracula (1945)
Peeping Tom (1960)
The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945)
The Raven (1935)
The Raven (1963)
...and the list could go on and on. So, before you suggest Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! as your Jawsploitation/Aquatic Horror pick, at least consider, if only for a moment, picking Revenge of the Creature (1955) or even Jaws 2 (1978) instead. It's a shame to let our horror heritage go ignored while we suffer through dreck just because it's recent.
Okay, soapbox rant over for the year. Let's get back to pickin'!

Other than Octoman, I try to find something I really, really liked that I don't think a lot of others have seen.
If you're near Portland, Oregon Oct 15th, there's a theater doing an all night horror marathon. I want to go but I think I already have plans to ride a zombie train that day.
I just want to give a heads up on this well in advance, I'm expecting this event to sell out:
On Saturday October 15th at 9:00pm, the Hollywood Theatre presents the ALL NIGHT HORROR MARATHON! Prepare for a night of mayhem, as we take you on a crazed journey of cinematic terror! 4 rare 35mm prints of 70’s and 80’s horror films. To add to the excitement, we won’t be announcing any titles in advance; but we’ll be showing a Satanic film, an underrated horror sequel, a forgotten 80’s slasher, and a batshit-crazy Italian gutmuncher. Advance tickets are strongly recommended, and are available here: http://prod3.agileticketing.net/webs...-69904aa252ae&
Vintage 35mm horror trailers before each film! Plus: Pizza! Beer! Coffee! Giveaways!! TERROR!!!

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 12: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl
On the one hand, it's nice to watch really excellent horror movies, true classics instead of terrible DTV sequels. On the other, anybody participating in this challenge has probably seen movies like Alien so many times, that it's not very exciting to revisit anymore. With an entire month of movie binging, I think there's room for both the pinnacle and the dregs of the genre. I like to revisit a couple of my favorites each October, but I'm mostly excited to discover new terrors and hidden gems. The most important thing to me is variety. Each challenge I look forward to films that will scare me, horror parodies that make me laugh, disposable 80s slashers, moody B&W chillers from the 60s, dark J-horror, sleazy Giallos, that's the beauty of the challenge.
IMO there's definitely room for Sharknado 4 as long as we also make room for some classics as well. I probably never would have seen an entertaining Chinese film like Bio-Zombie if not for this challenge, but it's also fun discussing modern horror classics like The VVitch with everybody, even though everybody here has probably all ready seen it. I remember one year my pick was the Brood, and everybody was kind of underwhelmed, not because it wasn't great, but because they had all ready seen it, but I remember one viewer had never seen it, and absolutely loved it. So you never know. I offered four selections, all from different decades and countries, no matter which one is chosen, I hope it reinforces a strong variety of subset films.

And I agree with you, DJ, that newer films shouldn't be off the table; every year there are one or two newer films that are subset picks that become favorites of mine. I also agree that, yeah, most people have probably already seen Alien...but as that movie's now 37 years old, there're probably more folks than we realize that haven't seen it just because they're too young for it to be on their radar.
I just hate to see us completely bypass some of the cornerstones of the genre in favor of stuff of questionable quality that's only criterion for inclusion is that it's recent. I disagree with you that we should make room for the dregs; surely no one wants to waste 90 minutes watching a film that he or she knows is going to be shitty. I also agree that the fun of the challenge is finding new (to me) films that resonate in some way. I was truly surprised a few years ago when I wound up loving ParaNorman; ditto for Sheitan. I bought them both immediately after the first viewings, and I probably would never have checked out either of them without the Challenge. I like the variety as well; I can think of nothing drearier than spending the whole month watching only vampire films, or Hammer films, or any other subset of horror films. Still, I'd like to avoid the truly crappy films as much as possible.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 12: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl
There's nothing wrong with choosing a new film but there's a difference between It Follows and Dahmer vs. Gacy. I hated It Follows but I'd watch it again over the latter. The latter shouldn't be picked because of the title. I know people elsewhere that wanted to watch it because of the title and *shocker*, the movie ended up being awful.
That's not to say I didn't go through my own phase of watching everything and finally getting to the point where a cool title/plot description wasn't enough to make me give something a shot.
If we're talking Sharknado, I can get someone suggesting the first one because of what it ended up creating. Picking Sharknado 4 just because it came out, isn't a reason to pick a movie. Because really, unless it's doing something different, it's only being picked because it's a new Sharknado.
There's a difference between punishing people with something you know most people here haven't seen and is garbage (not only do I own this movie, I own it because I won it in a contest).
and something you're also sure a lot of people here may not have seen but has some historic value and isn't that bad if you can get past it being a silent film.

Replace Alien with just about any "classic" film of *any* genre and that's a pretty fair statement. Just a couple of days ago I was astounded at some of the "classic" films a young coworker *hasn't* seen. In the past I've introduced her to the classic Universal horror films (many of which she liked), some of the 50s SF/Horror titles (most of which she liked), and others more recent. In our discussion I found some of the films she's not yet seen include: Stripes, Animal House, Caddyshack, Groundhog Day, Time Bandits, Blade Runner, The Blues Brothers, Monty Python's Life of Brian, The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), The Maltese Falcon, What's Up, Doc?, Ben-Hur (1959), Planet of the Apes (1968), The Magnificent Seven, It Happened One Night, Some Like it Hot, Schindler's List, The Good, The Bad and the Ugly and *none* of the Marx Brothers' films. While none qualify for the Horror challenge it just shows you can't go by what *you* know and exclude something just because you find it "familiar."

And there's also the issue of personal taste. While the Sharknado films are objectively pretty bad, I can definitely understand the entertainment value some would find in watching some of those SyFy movies. I could see them being refreshing and light after watching something like Martyrs. Personally, I love Lucio Fulci films, but I understand why others would consider them to be bad.

Despite some of the discussion, I think we have always done a good job in picking a variety of movies, both in content and time periods.
Just choose what you want to watch or something you would like to share with others. Will all of us like all of the choices? Of course not! But there's plenty of room for all tastes. Don't let others influence what you choose to recommend.

3 subset volunteers needed. Suggestions list on page 5 is currently up-to-date as of this post.
Maybe I imagined it, but I could have sworn someone asked earlier if repeats are allowed on subset suggestions. The answer is yes. Repeat away. Everyone only gets one pick, so no reason someone else's leftovers can't be put to good use.
I'll add it. I plan on getting it up to at least 200 titles.
And for those that are missing the Made-For-TV Horror Movies theme this year Dark Shadows has your back. There's quite a few on the list.
