Great job on the checklist Chad!

Just a thought.
I vaguely recall this being discussed before, and iirc:

"J-horror" on our checklist has always been to mean any Asian horror

the "nation of origin:" is a yearly rotating thing and various Asian countries will cycle thru

I could be wrong on both. I see your point though rbrown. And while there aren't a ton of countries with easy to obtain sizable horror film libraries, perhaps we can consider removing the Asian countries from that rotation.

That makes no sense because J-horror, K-horror, and C-horror are three different things. Then add in all the other asian countries for more differences.

In your use of J-horror, it's like when my wife offers to pick a sandwich up for me and I tell her what I want. Then she comes back with something different but says it's the same thing.

No Trevor, the toppings are different.

That's cool, I said I might be wrong. I agree they're different, I just thought that the term J-horror sprang up when only Japanese films were really making it over here, and as the market expanded to include other Asian countries, the term was sort of bastardized into including more than just Japanese.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 12: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

So this is sort of pertinent to the topic of Challenge planning, but could I get some brief input on an idea? I started a thread in feedback asking for the possibility of "personal threads". I've often wished I had my own thread hidden away somewhere on the forum so that I could:
  • have a place to experiment with thread and table formatting
  • have a place for all of my Challenge lists to allow for easier searching and collating
Does this make any sense? Would anyone else like to have "their own thread"?

I don't want this to turn into the discussion of a Challenges Sub-forum, just a quick yay or nay on my sanity.

So, ideally, would this thread be hidden so that only you could see it, or would it be open for all to check in on?

I don't recall a conversation morphing it to include other things. J-horror being all Asia doesn't make sense, especially since that would encompass Bollywood horror. Bollywood Dracula being labeled J-horror is just plain wrong. Here it is if you want to watch it
No subs but I think you can figure out what's going on.

Here's another one for some reason

I wouldn't care. It'd give this place more thread activity and potentially show a random person that comes by that we're not dead yet.

It's kind of like that monthly unwatched media pile thread. Even if I still ran it and was the only one participating, I'd still do it because I found it useful. If someone else joined in with even comments or something, that'd be cool too.

If you don't want outsiders to comment or join in with what you're doing, I think you want a text file on your computer.

I'm not sure, whatever is easiest for the admins. I wouldn't at all mind anyone seeing my "work".

I didn't mean here necessarily, I just meant years ago in general as J-horror became a known thing. But again, I agree it's illogical and could be wrong on the general history of the term.

But a text file on your computer doesn't allow the same unique formatting of this forum software. That's pretty much my main reason for wanting a "playground".

The only reason I can immediately see for not wanting others to post in your thread was if you wanted it as a place for all your challenge lists, to allow searches and statistics maybe. Having others comment and/or quote your posts would screw up your searches/stats.

I have a quick question on the Checklist. For Make-Up Effect artists, can you also include movies where they are listed as special effects but not make-up effect? This may be the stupidest question asked to many of you but my OCD requires me to ask it. I am asking because of John Carl Buechler's credit on Hatchet.

Thanks, I'll correct it soon. It escapes me how I overlooked that one.

Makes sense. Years ago I "accidentally" started a thread in the feedback forum (Test 2), and I've been using it for challenge formatting for five years now. That is, up until they turned off HTML in there a few months back for whatever unbeknownst reason.

That said, unless you intend on sharing with everyone, just go back, edit an old post from a thread that's no longer in use and use it. It might save you some potential embarrassment. Trust me, I know.

Yes. And it's not a stupid question.

Finding that thread was fun.

Good idea on just using an old post somewhere, but I still think it'd be useful to have a thread for all the various tables and lists and such I play around with here.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 12: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

Hi!

I'm a new member of sorts (been a reader, not a poster in other words), joined because I thought I should participate on this one this year.

Just a stupid newbie question
Each movie counts as 1 point or so, do completing the themes, subsets or checklists give extra "points" or are they more or less just a challenge in itself? :-)

Btw, much props for doing these things!

Bollywood Horror should definitely be on the checklist next year.
Speaking of next year, when does the feedback for next year thread go up? I sometimes thing of stuff during the challenge and it might be cool for that to be available for people to jot down their thoughts early.

Welcome aboard. There's not a 'points' system; just tally the films you watch (with partial credit for TV shows depending on length) and maintain a list count. The subset films, checklist, and theme nights are just for 'fun' or additional 'challenge.' The only benefit to completing subset, checklist, theme nights, or 100+ movies watched is an additional entry in prize giveaways at the end of the month. Mostly things are about discussing horror movies we all love and trying to make the most out of the season.

I usually put it up sometime in the first week of November. If you have ideas during the current challenge you could always put in the wiki underneath the optional lists. That way it wouldn't get overlooked and I could copy/paste it over.

Herschell Gordon Lewis is already on the checklist. I've also added him to theme nights alongside Gunnar Hansen and Angus Scrimm. Just wanted to mention that.

Also, this thread no longer serves a purpose, so let's send it straight to forum hell where it belongs.

If you have questions/requests regarding the optional lists please do so in the main thread.
