Realistically, since we'd all just be linking to our own posts in such a thread anyway, I don't see any reason we can't just use this thread. All in favor?

I barely pay attention to the non challenge threads, with the exception of the what are you watching and last tv show/last dvd threads.

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium

The only downside to using this thread is that it might seem a little chaotic with general challenge discussion intermingling with what could be very long list posts. Also, I don't know if anyone would actually do this, but it could be interesting to scroll through others' lists, and that would be more difficult in this thread.

BobO'Link 03-10-14 05:11 PM

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium

You wouldn't have a "very long list post" but a fairly concise post that simply contains links to your actual list posts in the various challenges. After first posting your "list" you simply update that single post with new challenge list links. After a while your post is going to fall on "stale" pages but your signature contains the link to the "master list" post which would make it easy for you, or others, to look up past endeavors. I'm constantly using my old lists to see just when I watched something and on those films I've rewatched to see if my rating changed from one viewing to another.

I could imagine different people doing different kinds of list posts, just based on some of the lists I've seen. :)

True... but as you use a single post for all your lists it'll soon be on a back page and most will be accessed via signature links.

While things are still hectic with my family, and I don't think I will be running the Animation challenge, I decided I will attempt to run the Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge this year. Expect the thread up soon, so I can have plenty of time to prepare the challenge at my own pace. Also, anyone who would like to step up and volunteer to run the August Animation Challenge, I would be most grateful.

Just letting people know that either later this week, or the beginning of next week I'll post the Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge discussion thread. Don't want to do it today, as I hurt my arm, and was forced to take some of my painkillers, the pain was so bad, ever since last night. In other words, I'm basically typing with one hand.

Well...wonderful timing. I've been spending time reading through last year's comments to see if there are changes to be made. All seems well, but I may adjust the decades to have the 1920s and 1930s separate again. Between Hulu titles (unreleased) and newer material, I think the 1920s is fine to stand on its own.

I'm getting antsy as well. I've already "saved" a few titles that I want to wait for the challenge to unearth.

I'll have the Discussion Thread up within the next few days.

I'm good with starting on Boxing Day.

For Oscars, that challenge traditionally begins a month before the awards ceremony, but participants (including me) have suggested that it begin when the nominations are announced (so like a week or two earlier) to take advantage of the buzz. I'd like to humbly raise that up the flagpole again. Thanks!

I had an idea for this years Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge. I was inspired by the bonus week for the Academy Awards Challenge. Thanks to Lisadoris for this idea. What are the with the feelings toward a pre challenge bonus week with the stipulation that it can only contain historical elements?

Is there a particular reason for it like the Academy Awards Challenge had (the nominations)? That's the only reason I'd vote for it.

edit: Or does it follow the historical challenge? If it does, then I'd be fine with it and also suggest an optional weekly theme through the rest of the challenge.

Technically, it wasn't Lisa's idea; it was David's and I brought it forward. I can't speak for the Sci-Fi/Fantasy host, but as the Historical Appreciation host, I can tell you that time travel is not eligible for that challenge.

Last year, I think we expanded to allow time travel in the final few hours of the challenge, but they had to take place in a time period that had already occurred (i.e., Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home would count because it takes place primarily in 1986, but Star Trek: First Contact would not, because it takes place primarily in 2063). I don't know whether we'll allow such things this year or not, as it was an experiment and to be honest, I don't recall if anyone actually did it.

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium

There was one checklist item I contributed that might be similar in idea and can co-exist, but have a more Sci-Fi ironic twist. Films that take place "in the future", but the time period has already passed. Like Death Race 2000, 2001: A Space Odyssey, 2010 The Year We Make Contact, 2012, 1984, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, Space 1999, Lost in Space (TV), The Omega Man, Escape From New York, Transformers the Movie (animated), etc. This year will allow Back to the Future part 2 (even though that's October, it should count) and we are fast approaching Blade Runner in 4 years.
