Re: 13th Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge. April 1-April 30, 2022 LIST THREAD

My previous Drive-in Challenge lists:

This Year's List:
Spoiler:

3/31/22

1) Tiger Joe (Fuga dall'arcipelago maledetto) (1982) [B-Movie TV] - A gunrunner's plane crashes after getting shot up on his last mission, leaving him stuck in a jungle where he meets a woman and they fall in love while shooting at some other people in the jungle.
2) The Savage Bees (1976) - Made-for-TV Movie: Ben Johnson and Michael Parks vs. killer bees in New Orleans during Mardi Gras.

4/1/22

3) The Last Time I Saw Archie (1961) - A service comedy with a cast of familiar faces produced, directed, and starring Jack Webb (who also narrates it!). Robert Mitchum plays Archie Hall (a character based on actor/director Arch Hall Sr.), an opportunistic private in the U.S Army Air Corps living it up while stationed Stateside during WWII. Not very funny, but still a lot of fun.
4) Souls for Sale AKA Confessions of an Opium Eater (Evils of Chinatown) (1962) - Vincent Price plays a poetic narrator-adventurer who arrives in San Francisco's Chinatown to investigate the death of an old friend and gets mixed up in a Tong war over opium and human trafficking. Delightfully weird.
5) Jose Iturbi: Part One (1941) - Pianist Jose Iturbi plays a couple of songs. / Cooking: Planning and Organization (1948) - Centron home economics short teaches future homemakers how to arrange their kitchens for maximum efficiency, and to plan meals ahead of time so they know when to start cooking each part of the meal so everything is completed around the same time. / Learning Discriminations and Skills (1956) - McGraw-Hill short uses footage from Harvard experiments with pigeons to illustrate how learning skills can occur through "stimulus discrimination" and "response differentiation." / You and Your Money (1955) - An animated short by the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond which talks about money and the Federal Reserve system. / Yeah! (1958) - United States Steel short which aims to encourage employees to be more careful and attentive, and have personal pride in their work, in order to cut down on errors.
6) The Happening (1967) - Four goofball delinquents (a really young, blonde Michael Parks, Faye Dunaway, George Maharis, and Robert Walker Jr.) kidnap rich guy Anthony Quinn (sort of by accident). After thinking about what they've done, they decide to make the most of the situation, and demand his wife pay $200,000 for his return. Unfortunately, for all of them, Quinn's wife, and everyone else he knows, aren't all that interested in getting him back. Pissed off and desperate, Quinn decides to take control of the situation and "kidnap himself." He blackmails everyone he knows by threatening to release information about their illegal activities if they don't pay him $3 million, then he fakes his own murder and frames his wife for it. A goofy, fun flick.

4/2/22

7) Greetings (1968) - Three jackasses (Robert De Niro and two other guys) go about their mundane lives in New York City. Written and directed by Brian De Palma.
8) Alvin Purple (The Sex Therapist) (1973) - Double entendre packed Australian sex comedy about the sexual adventures of a nondescript Australian guy - who doesn't really enjoy sex, but who, for whatever reason, Australian women find irresistible - who becomes an unlicensed sex therapist, and eventually an Australian cause célèbre.
9) Alvin Rides Again (Foreplay the Prequel) (1974) - In this obviously rushed sequel, Alvin and his buddy Spike go on a road trip, have a few sexcapades, then meet Alvin's doppelganger, an American gangster, who Alvin is forced to impersonate (so he can pull off a heist) after accidentally causing his death.

4/3/22

10) Blue Summer (1973) - Two guys take a ratty looking van on a road trip. Chris Jordan was in it for a few minutes near the end, so it wasn't a total waste.
11) Summer School Teachers (1974) - Three young women get on a bus and head to Hollywood to become...summer school teachers? Sure it has a ridiculous plot, but Candice Rialson and Dick Miller are in it.
12) Laure (Forever Emmanuelle) (1977) - Laure, the often naked promiscuous daughter of a preacher living in the Philippines, meets a photographer. After an hour or so of naked shenanigans, they sail to an island to watch some mysterious annual tribal ritual.

4/4/22

13) Vanessa (1977) - Following the death of her wealthy uncle (her only living relative), Vanessa leaves the convent where she was raised and travels to Hong Kong to take over her late uncle's prostitution empire.
14) Joy Ride (1958) - Four clean-cut, overaged juvenile delinquents repeatedly harass a middle aged suburban couple, hoping for a chance to take the couple's new T-Bird for a joy ride.
15) Rolling Vengeance (1987) - A Canadian truck driver builds a monster truck, and uses it to hunt down and kill Ned Beatty's redneck sons who killed his family and raped his girlfriend.
16) World Without End (1956) - Four astronauts return to Earth from Mars but land in a postapocalyptic future populated by one-eyed, primitive "mutates" and a few surviving humans (who mostly live underground).
17) Hells Chosen Few (1968) [OtherWorlds TV] - After a drunken sheriff kills his daughter's boyfriend and the crime is pinned on an innocent biker, the biker's fast-talking Marine brother joins his brother's MC to find the real killer.
18) Terror-Creatures from the Grave (5 tombe per un medium) (1965) [OtherWorlds TV] - An attorney arrives at a castle to record a will for a client who recently sent him a letter, but the client's widow (Barbara Steele) tells him he died a year earlier.

4/5/22

19) Dragon Against Vampire (Hong tiao jing) (1985) [B-Movie TV] - Three bumbling graverobbers end up at an inn where a "vampire" who feeds off the nether regions of virgins is also staying. Eventually, after some more tomfoolery, two of the slapstick crooks are killed. Then the remaining guy undergoes some sort of training and some other stuff happens, leading up to a final fight. IMDb says this mess was written by Godfrey Ho, so that sorta explains things.
20) Joyride to Nowhere (1977) [tubi] - Two teenage girls run away from home and get picked up by a fat rich guy (director Mel Welles). He takes them to his place, and while he's in the shower, they steal his car and leave, not realizing there's $2 million in stolen loot in the trunk.
21) Choosing for Happiness (1950) - Two young ladies discuss boys and dating. / Meat - From Range to Market - Production, Processing and Distribution (1955) - Encyclopedia Britannica short focusing on the U.S. meat industry from fields, to packing plants, to your local butcher. / Hurricane Watch (195?) - This U.S. Weather Bureau short about a hurricane striking eastern North Carolina provides an interesting look at tracking hurricanes in the pre-satellite era. / African City: Contrasting Cultures (1970) - A look at the city of Abidjan and its citizens. / The Commercial Photographer (1969) - McGraw-Hill short shows a day in the life of a photographer. Then it gives a short biography of him at the end. / Kiddie Camera (unknown date) - Newsreel for and about kids shows a few moments of kids rodeo riding, kids "glide shoeing" on snow (like ice skates, but flat like skis), and kids golfing. / Cities of the Web (1971) - Footage of stuff being manufactured and shipped, or bought and sold, put to music. / The Discovery of Radioactivity (1962) - English dubbed German film discussing several scientists and their early experiments with radioactive elements (Wilhelm Roentgen, Henri Becquerel, Marie Curie & Pierre Curie, Julius Elster, Hans Geitel, and Ernest Rutherford).
22) BMX Bandits (1983) - A very young Nicole Kidman and two other Australian kids stumble upon a stash of radios which a group of Australian robbers were planning to use in a robbery. Oh yeah, the kids ride bikes now and then.

4/6/22

23) Night Child (Diabólica malicia, What the Peeper Saw) (1972) - After Britt Ekland meets her new husband's weird little kid (Mark Lester), she starts to suspect he murdered his mother.
24) Disciple of Death (1972) [OtherWorlds TV] - Period piece about satanists, featuring lots of scenes of people standing around talking while an organist offscreen practices Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor over and over and over. It was kind of like an Andy Milligan movie.

4/7/22

25) The Boxer's Omen (Mo) (1983) - Oddball Shaw Bros. movie about a guy whose brother is paralyzed in the ring by a Thai boxer (Bolo Yeung), so he wants revenge, but first he ends up at a temple and gets recruited into a supernatural war between a monk and a magician (and his stop motion monsters, monster puppets, rubber spiders, plastic bats, and snakes).
26) Let's Visit a Shopping Center (1964) - A look at an old school outdoor mall somewhere in California. Unfortunately I didn't see any comic books. / The Number System (1952) - Encyclopedia Britannica short on how to count larger amounts quicker by using groups of ten. / Let's Find Life! (1971) - This Encyclopedia Britannica short (part of The Wonder Walks series) shows three kids walking around their neighborhood, looking at and touching animals and insects. / California Missions (1937) - Part of RKO's World on Parade series - Shows a handful of missions in California as the narrator tells us their history. / Beginning Responsibility: Learning to be a Good Sport (Second Edition) (1987) - This animated Coronet short aims to teach children that "fun is what games are for," and that it doesn't matter whether you win or lose. / Animals Growing Up (1949) - An Encyclopedia Britannica short showing various baby animals and how they change as they grow. / American Folklore: Paul Bunyan (1971) - A narrator (Paul De Witt) tells the story of Paul Bunyan, accompanied by a series of rough drawings. / Nurse-Practitioner (1974) - This short shows a pediatric nurse practitioner at work, with occasional voice-overs as she talks about her job and her life.

4/8/22

27) Super Mario Bros. (1993) - Two Brooklyn plumbers, Mario and Luigi, travel to another dimension to try to rescue some women who were kidnapped by lizard people.

4/9/22

28) Missing in Action (1984) - A recently escaped ex-POW (Chuck Norris) goes back to Vietnam to rescue other American soldiers still held there. I had watched this one before, long ago.
29) Missing in Action 2: The Beginning (1985) - This prequel covers events mentioned in the first film, starting during the Vietnam war as Col. Braddock (Chuck Norris) is on a mission when his helicopter is shot down and he gets captured and thrown into an inescapable jungle prison camp where he stays for several years until his eventual explosive escape.
30) Braddock: Missing in Action III (1988) - A rehash of events and characters from the first two movies placed into new situations. It's basically a reboot. In this one, Col. Braddock (Chuck Norris), instead of being in a POW camp, was helping people evacuate by helicopter during the Fall of Saigon. Following an explosion which he believed killed his Vietnamese wife, Braddock was shot and returned to the U.S. Several years later, a priest tells him that his wife is still alive in Vietnam (along with a now 12 year old son he didn't know he had), so he returns to try to retrieve them, only to be captured and tortured in a prison.
31) She's Dressed to Kill (1979) [B-Movie TV] - Made for TV movie - A fashion designer invites a bunch of suspects to her mountaintop chateau for a private fashion show. The guests get stuck there during a storm, and start dying one by one.

4/10/22

32) Sex Galaxy (2008) - New dialogue dubbed over newly edited public domain footage tells the story of a future where sex has been outlawed on earth. I was more entertained by attempting to identify the various old source films than by watching this new one.
33) #1 Cheerleader Camp (2010) - Asylum sex comedy about two losers who get summer jobs doing maintenance and cleaning at a cheerleader camp.

4/11/22

35) The Best of Shaolin Kung Fu (Wan fa gui zong yi Shao Lin, Das Erbe der 18 Bronzekämpfer) (1976) - Although the title sounds like it could be a compilation of scenes from several movies, it's not. The first part of the film sets up some stuff about restoring the Han Dynasty. Then one guy goes to a Shaolin temple to get evidence of the emperor's Han lineage. There he fights some opponents, then moves to the next level. Wash, rinse, and repeat.

Besides, "seeing the doctor nowadays doesn't hurt at all." / Pollution Below (1975) - NASA film about pollution. / About Animals: Gerbils (1971) - A short by Xerox about gerbils. / The Smith System of "Space Cushion" Driving (1968) - Driver's Ed. film by Ford discussing Harold Smith's 5 driving rules. Includes lots of beautiful color shots of late sixties Fords driving in traffic on a sunny day in some Californian city.
38) Kickboxers' Final Countdown (Whang long xue bei, The Revenge Dragon, The God Father of Hong Kong, Dragon Force Operation) (1973) [B-Movie TV] - Pretty standard Chinese workers versus Japanese occupiers flick.

The multiple freeze frames made me think my internet was on the blink. / No Frames. No Boundaries. (1982) - Depressing globalist, anti-nuke short. Starts out with Apollo 9 astronaut Russell Schweickart walking in space, then segues to discussing territoriality and human evolution. After a while, the deliveryman meets a gambling cheat who explains how the buyer probably tricked him. After learning that the buyer had ripped off many others using the same grift, the cheat and his buddy set out to rob the thief, but first they have to learn some kung fu from an old wino.
71) At Gunpoint (1990) [B-Movie TV] - After he is released from prison, a criminal goes looking for the hidden loot from his last job, with an FBI agent in pursuit.

4/22/22

Unfortunately he loses, which angers the Chinese Martial Arts Association. Eventually Carter Wong and Angela Mao go to Thailand to observe and learn about Thai boxing, to prepare for a rematch.
73)State Services (1970) - McGraw-Hill short discusses a few assistance programs, then goes through a "wish list" of possible programs (if the state had unlimited funds), and ends with the narrator asking the viewers to come up with their own programs. / The Housefly and its Control (1962) - Coronet short about flies. / Mister Pounds (1968) - After some kids break one of his windows with a baseball, Mr. Pounds, who runs the corner grocery shop, catches one of them and drags him home to talk to his mother. 4/23/22

74) Fongaluli (Aphrodisiac) (1972) - A really weird sex comedy about a nerdy dork who buys some "Fongaluli" leaves from another guy at a cafe. He goes home and feeds the leaves to his lobster, which then transforms into a naked woman. After the woman turns back into a lobster, he goes to get more leaves, but there are no more, so he and the lobster take a small inflatable raft on an epic journey to find Fongaluli Island.
75) Una sull'altra (Perversion Story, One on Top of the Other) (1969) - An Italian doctor running a clinic in San Francisco has an asthmatic wife who dies. Or did she?

4/24/22

77) The Total Female (Melissa: The Total Female) (1970) - A softcore movie about making hardcore movies.
78) Matou a Família e Foi ao Cinema (Killed the Family and Went to the Movies) (1969) - A guy kills his parents (?) with a straight razor, then goes to the movies. Then some other stuff happens - people dance, people get killed, I had a tough time staying awake. At least the title was memorable.

4/25/22

79) Trapped in the House (1970) - Most of the film is five bisexual college girls and their lesbian housemother having softcore sex, alone or in various couplings. The housemother wants to keep boys out of the house, but two of the girls convince a guy to dress up like a girl and sneak him into their room "to study."
80) A Mowing Lesson for Charlie (1963) - Dept. of Health, Education and Welfare short - Charlie decides to buy a power mower, but he throws away the owner's manual before learning the right way to use his new mower, so it's up to the narrator to yell at him and tell him what he should or shouldn't do to avoid serious injury. / The Development of Transportation (1931) - Erpi short discusses the history of transportation in the U.S. / Holding Them Spellbound (Second Edition) (1983) - Coronet short gives storytelling tips for beginning writers. / Sex is My Business (1974) - An orgy breaks out in a busy "marital aids" store after a customer accidentally drops a bottle of "Love Drops."
81) Fancy Lady (1971) - Uschi Digard plays a reporter researching an article comparing sexuality in San Francisco with Copenhagen. There's about three quarters of an hour of nothing but Uschi watching other people having pretend, softcore sex, then she gets naked and has a little alone time.
82) The Game of Death! (1974) [B-Movie TV] - No, not that Game of Death. This one is about a karate champion (who is also a secret agent) who gets invited to a martial arts tournament on a private island ruled over by a megalomaniacal villain straight out of a comic book.
83) Tales of the Dead (2010) [OtherWorlds TV] - A horror anthology where five friends hanging out on Halloween night show each other short, crappy horror movies.

4/26/22

84) Hot Wax Zombies on Wheels (1999) [OtherWorlds TV] - A woman moves into an old house in a sleepy seaside town and opens a waxing salon. The people she waxes at the salon turn into zombies.
85) Praying Mantis (1993)) [OtherWorlds TV] - Police are looking for a female serial killer (Jane Seymour) who people are calling both the Praying Mantis and the Wedding Night Killer - because she has married five wealthy men, then murdered them - but she has already set her sights on wealthy widower Barry Bostwick.

4/27/22

86) Dance of the Dwarfs (Jungle Heat) (1983) [OtherWorlds TV] - An anthropologist hires an alcoholic helicopter pilot (Peter Fonda) to fly her into a jungle in search of a lost tribe.
87) The Devil-Ship Pirates (1964) - In this Hammer film starring Christopher Lee, a pirate ship fighting alongside the Spanish Armada off the English coast is so badly damaged during the battle that it must secretly land in England to attempt repairs.
88) Shatter (1974) - In this Hammer / Shaw Brothers co-production, Stuart Whitman is a hitman called Shatter who assassinates an African head of state, then heads to Hong Kong to get paid, only to be rebuffed by the money people (who refuse to pay him the $100,000 he was promised) and disavowed by whatever Agency had previously employed him. Things start to look up for him though after two Chinese guys kick his ass in an alley and Peter Cushing kindly advises him to be on the next plane out of Hong Kong.

4/28/22

89) Hey, Let's Twist! (1961) - Two brothers - who want to drop out of college to become rock'n' rollers - have to take over their father's Italian restaurant for a couple of weeks after he falls ill. They quickly turn it into a dance club, and rename it the Peppermint Lounge, and business is booming until one brother's high class girlfriend starts insisting that they make changes to the club.
90) Screaming Mimi (1958) - Following an attack by an escaped mental patient, a woman (Anita Ekberg) is sent to a mental asylum, where her doctor takes a special interest in her case.
91) Apollo Digest: Apollo Mission Highlights (196?) - NASA film describing the then upcoming Apollo mission to the moon. / Shake Hands With Danger (1980) - Classic Caterpillar work safety film with the famously catchy theme song. / The Magnificent Major (1977) - A musical short about a little girl who doesn't enjoy reading who accidentally falls into a classmate's time machine and travels into the future, where books are outlawed. / An Orchid to Mr. Jordan (1949) - In this U.S. Steel film, Mr. Jordan (a steel exec.) receives a stainless steel orchid by messenger, then proceeds to tell us the story behind it (while teaching us how "this wonderful metal" stainless steel is made, and extolling its seemingly limitless versatility and its ubiquity in modern life). / The Germ (1954) - Another United States Steel film. In this one, a folksy narrator tells us that making steel is so complicated, it's "practically impossible," like "juggling eggs on a tightrope." Then he shows how tiny mistakes or bad decisions (a "germ") can have big, expensive consequences (this last part was a lot like the U.S. Steel film Yeah! (1958), which I saw at the beginning of the month - I think some of it was repeated verbatim in the later film).
92) And God Said to Cain (E Dio disse a Caino...) (1970) [B-Movie TV] - Man wrongly sent to prison is released and goes looking for revenge.

4/29/22

93) Legong (Dance of the Virgins) (1935) - A young woman falls in love with a musician who breaks her heart when he meets and falls for her younger sister.
94) The Devil with Hitler (1942) - Hell's Board of Directors want to force the devil to retire and to replace him with Hitler. The devil makes a deal with them that they will reconsider it if he can go to Germany and get Hitler to perform just one good deed. / Canning Cold Pack Method (192?) - Silent short demonstrating the One Period Cold Pack Method (U.S. government approved) for canning fruits and vegetables (although it "is equally successful for canning fish, fowl, soup and meat of all kinds"). / Moths (193?) - Early educational short about moths. / Neighborhoods are Different (2nd Edition) (1987) - A diverse group of kid narrators talk about their neighborhoods (in a city, in the suburbs, and on a farm). / Gardening (1940) - Bill and Betsy plant a vegetable garden, and we get to watch. / An Autumn Story: Mrs. Pennypacker's Package (1967) - When she rushes off to catch a bus, absent-minded Mrs. Pennypacker leaves a package sitting on the sidewalk outside a grocery store. When she realizes what she did, she quickly exits the bus and finds a payphone and calls the shopkeeper, who informs her that the package is still there. So he sends a grocery clerk on a bicycle to carry the package across town to her.
95) Confessions from the David Galaxy Affair (1979) - A licentious astrologist finds himself the subject of a Scotland Yard investigation.

4/30/22

96) Dr. Frankenstein on Campus (Flick) (1970) - Young Viktor Frankenstein gets kicked out of college in Central Europe for dueling. He then goes to a college in Canada, where he studies mind control and hangs out with hippies. Eventually he gets kicked out of that school too, so he uses his mind control device to turn his friend Tony (a Tae Kwan Do enthusiast) into a killing machine to get revenge.
97) Guai xia (The Magnificent Swordsman) (1968)- In this Shaw Bros. movie (obviously influenced by Japanese and Italian films), a wandering swordsman is attacked by blundering thieves who end up killing each other. As one of them dies, he asks the swordsman to deliver his sword to his sister and tell her he is dead. Of course the swordsman does as asked, and after meeting the sister, he decides to help her (and the people in her village) against a gang of evildoers.
98) Dynasty (1977) - A kung fu bad guy is after a kung fu prince who I think survived a massacre 12 years earlier. The plot isn't important. The movie is mostly a lot of people fighting for about an hour and a half... in 3D!

5/1/22

99) Revenge of the Shogun Women (13 Golden Nuns) (1977) - Some bandits attack a village and rape some women. The women go to a Buddhist temple, have their heads shaved, become nuns, and learn kung fu. Eventually, they get their revenge on the bandits... in 3D!

DVD unless otherwise noted

March 31
01. Enter the Dragon (1973) (Bruce Lee His Greatest Hits) Blu-ray
I haven't seen this in almost 10 years but it is still entertaining. I forgot just how Bond like this is. 7/10

April 03
02. The Ghastly Ones (1968) (The Dungeon of Andy Milligan) Blu-ray
Three sisters and their husbands gather for the reading of their father's will. Bloody murder follows. Very low budget, often amateurish but also with some enthusiastic acting. Very watchable and sometimes fun. 5/10

April 04
03. The Ghastly Ones commentary with Keith Crocker
Interesting and enthusiastic discussion that rambles once in a while.
04. Three Tough Guys aka Tough Guys (1974)* B-Movie TV
An ex-cop (Isaac Hayes) and a two-fisted priest try to solve a series of murders and recover a million in stolen cash. Filmed by an Italian crew in Chicago. Pretty good, the action is mundane but a nice funky score. With Fred Williamson.

April 05
05. Frogs (1972)
I had a great time with this. I particularly liked the frequent, ominous close-ups of frogs throughout the movie. They were usually more interesting than what the characters were up to. 6.5/10
06. Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971) (Godzilla: The Showa-Era Films, 1954–1975) Blu-ray
A very odd Godzilla movie with several short animated scenes, a scientist hero who has to be lugged around by his wife due to injuries, Godzilla flying, and a very leisurely final battle that takes place in a dark desolate landscape. 6/10

April 06
07. Fortress of Amerikkka (1989)* Blu-ray
Despite Troma's typical heavy-handed humor I found this pretty entertaining with enough nonsense in the plot, action and boobs to hold my interest for the 100 minute running time. 5/10
08. Alley Cat (1984)* Blu-ray
A karate black belt turns vigilante after her grandmother is killed by a thug and most of the police don't care. Lower body count than the Death Wish movies but the lead is better looking than Charles Bronson. 5/10

April 07
09. Mom and Dad (1945)* Blu-ray
Teenager Joan gets "in trouble" but her parents are clueless in this Monogram made tearjerker. Near the end two personal hygiene shorts are included dealing with child birth and VD which are pretty strong stuff, especially the latter. 6/10
10. The Body Beneath (1970)* (The Dungeon of Andy Milligan) Blu-ray
The leader of a vampire family tries to keep the clan going. Best part of this one is Gavin Reed who plays the leader. The worst is the muddled plot. Not awful, but didn't really grab me. 4.5/10

April 08
11. Santo y Mantequilla en la venganza de la Llorona (1974)* Tubi
Santo teams up with a boxer buddy to recover lost Spanish treasure and break a centuries old curse. Pretty good with a nice cave set. Fights are OK for middled aged Santo (wears a sweater, no sports car) 5/10.
12. Nightbirds (1970)* (The Dungeon of Andy Milligan) Blu-ray
A young woman takes in a naive, possibly broken young man she finds sick on the street and begins to use him for her own purposes. Interesting, sometime intense. Well acted, mostly set in a cramped ramshackle flat. 6.5/10

April 09
13. Santa Fe Bound (1936)* (Mill Creek Western Collection 250 Movie Pack Disk: 9)
Tom Tyler plays a cowboy who helps a woman keep her ranch after her father is murdered. Head villain is Richard Cramer, one of my favs. OK but needed more action. Print is rough for a while at the beginning. 5/10
14. Marshall of Gunsmoke (1944)* (VCI Tex Ritter Classic Western Collection)
A lawman tries to bring order to a wild boom town. Above average. Good action, some nice songs and a more interesting than usual plot. Tex Ritter makes a good hero. 6/10
15. And for a Roof a Sky Full of Stars (1968)* B-Movie TV
Fun spaghetti western with a good mix of action and comedy. A handsome con man and a rough hewn miner become traveling companions while evading a gang after the con man. Plot often unfocussed but a good Morricone score. 6/10

April 10
16. Spook Busters (1946)* (Warner Archive Collection The Bowery Boys Volume 2)
The Bowery Boys graduate from Exterminators U. and are hired to get rid of some ghosts from an old house. OK but pretty much a one joke movie. Good supporting cast. 5/10
17. 7 Steps of Kung Fu aka Kung Fu of Seven Steps (1979)* (Mill Creek Iron Fist Frenzy 50 Movies)
A student and his master take on a gang with five powerful fighters. Very good training sessions and plentiful acrobatic fights but little and very vague story. Something about some kind of plot against the country. 6/10
18. Ninja Fist of Fire aka The Fist That Kills (1972)* (Mill Creek Iron Fist Frenzy 50 Movies)
No ninjas here but an interesting story about the crown prince kidnapped by a gang of fighters and held in their fortress. One on one fights are OK, some group battles as well. 6/10
19. Alien Space Avenger (1989)* B-Movie TV
Four alien terrorists crash land on Earth and take over some locals in order to find plutonium to refuel their ship. The effects are pretty good, the story and action are OK but acting, pacing, and humor are seriously lacking. 4/10

April 11
20. Burnout (1979)* (Mill Creek Savage Cinema 12 Movie Collection)
A rich kid wants to be a drag racer so dad buys him a fancy new car and a race team. LOTS of racing footage all of which looks about the same. Plot is moved along by race track announcers who you often can't hear very well. 3.5/10
21. Little Laura & Big John (1973)* (Mill Creek Savage Cinema 12 Movie Collection)
Supposedly the true story of the Ashley gang who operated in Florida in the 1920's. Awful movie with bland acting, no sense of period, lame songs and an inappropriate soundtrack. I wasn't ever bored but I came darned close a few times. 2.5/10

April 12
22. Steel and Lace (1991)* Blu-ray
A scientist creates a robot that looks just like his sister who committed suicide after being raped. Good effects and acting, bloody deaths, moves along well but just so so.. 5.5/10
23. Massacre in Dinosaur Valley (1985)* Blu-ray
Survivors of a plane crash try to survive the Amazon jungle pursued by headhunters. No dinosaurs here but lots of blood and carnage. Sometimes stupid but always sleazy fun. 6/10
24. Torture Dungeon (1970)* (The Dungeon of Andy Milligan) Blu-ray
In medieval times an evil, twisted duke kills off members of the royal family so he can become king. Silly costumes and plastic fruit aside, the story isn't bad full of decadence, sleaze, and treachery but not really much gore. 5/10

April 13
25. Torture Dungeon commentary with Alex DiSanto
Information packed commentary almost overwhelmed me with facts about actors and crew. Particularly interesting was info about Mulligan's relationship with producer William Mishkin.
26. Bloodthirsty Butchers (1970) (The Dungeon of Andy Milligan) Blu-ray
Andy Mulligan does Sweeney Todd. Full of soap opera drama, blood, gut munching, and of course meat pies. Once again no real sense of being in another time but I still thought this was OK. 5.5/10
27. Battle of Blood Island (1960)* (The Roger Corman Puerto Rico Trilogy)
Two American soldiers, the only survivors of an invasion attempts, try to survive on a Japanese controlled island. Well done, interesting how the relationship between the soldiers changes. 6/10

April 14
28. The Poseiden Explosion (1989)* B-Movie TV
A ship carrying tons of fertilizer catches fire and endangers a nearby city. OK. The ship is just on fire with most crew missing or dead, the action is often confusing and some of the plans are kind of silly. Could be the English dub. 5/10
29. The Sisterhood (1988)* Blu-ray
More Cirio H. Santiago post apocalyptic cheese. This time a group or women who have special powers take on the usual hairy guys driving Mad Max cars. Pretty good with a bit more SF than usual. 6/10

April 15
30. The Patriot (1986)* (Mill Creek Explosive Cinema 12 Movie Collection)
A loose cannon ex-Navy Seal is assigned to find a few stolen nuclear devices. OK but not everything really makes sense and some stuff is just silly. Predictable. 4.5/10
31. 9 Deaths of the Ninja (1985)* (Mill Creek Explosive Cinema 12 Movie Collection)
A crack anti-terrorist team is sent to the Philippines when a bus load of American tourists is hijacked. It took a while to realize that this is a parody. Once I got that, it was a lot of fun. 5.5/10
32. Mystery Science Theater 3000 (1997) Streaming
Mike and the bots face off against Space Mutiny (1988), a miserable film starring Reb Brown, with some great riffs and excellent host segments. Episode 820.

April 16
33. Take Me Back to Oklahoma (1940)* (Mill Creek Western Collection 250 Movie Pack Disk: 9)
Another very good Tex Ritter western. This one features Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys one of the great western swing bands. Lots of good music but enough action to keep things moving. 6/10
34. The Dawn Rider (1935)* (Mill Creek Western Collection 250 Movie Pack Disk: 9)
John Wayne plays a cowboy searching for the man who murdered his father. Also has stuntman great Yakima Canutt as one of the bad guys. Some good action and stunts but kind of creaky in between. 5/10
35. Commando Fury (1986)* B-Movie TV
A woman's prison camp in China? during WW2? Very vague. First hour is pretty brutal and poorly done. The last 25 minutes really picks up the pace and becomes downright crazy (killer trees!) saving the movie. Written and directed by Godfrey Ho. 4/10
36. Manfish (1956) (The Lon Chaney Collection)
Treasure hunting in the Caribbean with Victory Jory, Lon Chaney Jr., and John Bromfield all of whom are very good in their rolls. Some nice underwater footage. 6/10

April 17
37. Hard Boiled Mahoney (1947)* (Warner Archive Collection The Bowery Boys Volume 2)
The boys are mistaken for private detectives and get involved with a blackmail racket. OK, a little funnier than last weeks film but not a whole lot. 5/10
38. 18 Fatal Strikes (1978)* (Mill Creek Iron Fist Frenzy 50 Movies)
Two idiots shelter a rebel monk fleeing the Manchus, get beat up and then get trained. The main bad guy's Shaking Eagle style is a sight to behold. All the fights are pretty good. 5/10
39. Five-Pattern Dragon Claws (1983)* (Mill Creek Iron Fist Frenzy 50 Movies)
An evil martial arts master takes over a temple to get four training books so he can become even stronger. Former students and teachers fight back. Starts slow and confusing but gets better with some good fighting. 5/10
40. The P.A.C.K. (1997)* B-Movie TV
Earthlings and an alien hunter try to stop a killer cyborg from outer space. Starts out slow, some of the action scenes are boring, and the creature suit is only so-so but there are a couple of interesting ideas. 5.5/10
41. Revenge of Billy the Kid (1997)* B-Movie TV
The head of a gross, dirty family sires a goat/human offspring which eventually turns killer. Silly but not always funny British movie starts on the disgusting side but turns into a decent monster on the prowl story. 5/10

April 18
42. The Rats Are Coming! The Werewolves Are Here! (1972)* (The Dungeon of Andy Milligan) Blu-ray
A family of werewolves strive to continue the line. OK but it drags more than usual. The rats are pointless and just added to pad the running time. Some performances are pretty good and the end works well. 4.5/10
43. Guns (1990)* (Bullets, Bombs and Babes: The Films of Andy Sidaris)
A threat from agent Donna's past puts the team on alert. Erik Estrada plays the main baddie in this fair action movie. More intrigue than all out action, seems to lack some of the spark of other Sidaris films. 4.5/10

April 19
44. Champ Against Champ (1980)* B-Movie TV
A fighter loses his leg while fighting a tyrant and his henchmen. He forges a new one and learns the 18 kicks. Fun fights with a variety of weapons, some strange, and even some magic like invisibility and fire breathing. 6/10
45. Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine (1965)*
A mad scientist creates good looking female robots to help him conquer the world. Silly stuff and not funny at all but a pleasant watch. Vincent Price is obviously having a good time and there are some clever nods to other films. 5/10
46. Golden Queen's Commandos (1982)* B-Movie TV
During WW2 female prisoners are recruited to blow up an isolated manufacturing plant. Plot wanders a lot with the tone changing often from WIP to western to commando mission among others. A fun watch if confusing at times. 6/10
47. War of the Satellites (1958) Otherworlds TV
A force from outer space tries to stop humanity from going to other planets. Low budget shows but some nice touches. Story is talky and slow in spots. Dick Miller does a good job as the hero. Directed by Roger Corman. 4.5/10

April 20
48. Marihuana: Weed With Roots in Hell (1936) Blu-ray
A teenage girl smokes a joint which starts her on the road to crime and addiction. Full of seedy characters and clueless good guys. A touch of nudity. 5/10
49. Evil Bong (2006)* Tubi
A bunch of stoners order a cursed bong with unfortunate results. Pretty funny especially in the first half of the movie. The horror aspects and some of the effects aren't so successful. 5.5/10

April 21
50. Private House of the SS (1977) Otherworlds TV
Prostitutes are trained to be love machines in order to root out traitors among Nazi generals. Lots of nudity, orgies, and kinkiness. Also some very bizarre, awful acting and plot turns. Directed by Bruno Mattei. 4.5/10
51. The Wizard of Mars (1965) Otherworlds TV
A survey ship crashes on Mars. Lots of traipsing around some scenic locals. About an hour in something interesting happens and then the giant head of John Carradine appears. Except for Carradine the acting is bad. Poor end. 3.5/10
52. Narcotic (1933) Blu-ray
The story of a doctor who becomes a heroin addict after kicking an opium habit. Seems to drag in spots but the high class drug party is a hoot. The actor playing the doctor is pretty good. 4.5/10

April 22
53. Narcotic commentary with Bret Wood
Informative commentary tells a lot about the real life person the story was based on and about Dwain Esper and his battles with the censors.
54. The Man With Two Heads (1972) (The Dungeon of Andy Milligan) Blu-ray
Milligan does Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Lead Denis DeMarne does a decent job as both Jekyll and Hyde. The other actors are variable and the film seems to drag a bit more than usual for Milligan. 4.5
55. Guru the Mad Monk (1970) (The Dungeon of Andy Milligan) Blu-ray
The head of a combination church and prison uses unholy means to keep his institution solvent. Short, crazy, and weird just the way I like them. 5.5/10

April 23
56. Vengeance (1968)*
A cowboy tracks down the five men who brutally murdered a close friend. Very good. Some very tense gunfights and a good if standard story. 7/10
57. Colossus and the Headhunters (1963)* (Mill Creek Warriors 50 Movie Pack)
Machiste guides refugees from a volcano to another island where they land in the middle of a war. Lackluster, Machiste is not real effective here, running away a lot but does get the job done. The headhunters are underused. 4.5/10
58. Vulcan Son of Jupiter (1962)* (Mill Creek Warriors 50 Movie Pack)
Mars and Venus go to Earth where they plot against Jupiter. Vulcan tries to stop them. Silly but fairly exciting stuff with cheap and cheesy monsters and effect. Good fun. 5.5/10
59. Julie Darling (1983)*
A girl who REALLY likes her daddy tries to remove everyone else he is close with. Good cast and some suspenseful scenes but falls just a little flat at times. With Sybil Danning. 6/10

April 24
60. The Girls from Thunder Strip (1970)* Tubi
Three brutal bikers face off against three female bootleggers and their kin. Not bad although not as suspenseful as it could have been. Also the characters are often just plain dumb. Directed by David L. Hewitt. 5/10
61. The Fist of Death (1982)* Streaming Prime
Santo battles an evil witch in some country in Asia. Subpar Santo movie and generally poor. Lots of padding with tons of travel scenes and dancing and a few lame action scenes. The dubbing is awful, some of the worst I've ever heard. 3/10
62. Blue Demon: Death Night (1975)* Streaming Prime
Someone tries to frame the Blue Demon for robbery and murder. Same crap dubbing (I blame Shout! Factory) but a better movie. Lots of running around and some OK wrestling and action. 5/10

April 25
63. Star Force: Fugitive Alien II(1987)* B-Movie TV
Cheesy space opera from Japan courtesy of Sandy Frank. A space crew is ordered to destroy an alien super weapon. Not that great but I kind of liked it. 4/10
64. Bloodfist VIII: Hard Way Out (1996)*
Don "The Dragon" Wilson plays and ex-CIA agent whose past catches up to him. Not bad, typical movie in the series. More gunfights than kickboxing but still some good martial arts. 5/10
65. Weekend Pass (1984)* (Mill Creek Too Cool For School Collection)
After completing basic training four Navy guys head to LA for a weekend of fun and frolic. They find both but not how they expected. Stock characters in a usually bland but pleasant movie. Some nice shots of LA in the 80's. 4.5/10
66. Magnum Cop (1978)* (Crime Boss Collection 6 DVD Set)
An easy going but tough private eye works on a kidnapping case in Austria and connects it with the death of a young girl years ago. More mystery than action but our hero does get beat up a a lot. 5.5/10

April 26
67. Black Snake (1973)* (The Russ Meyer Collection R2)
Russ Meyer film set in 1835 about a cruel, female slave owner. Less nudity than you might expect and intended to have a social message. Not bad but not great either. 5/10
68. She-Man: A Story of Fixation (1967)* (SWV Gender Bender Double Feature)
The cruel Dominita uses blackmail, drugs, and cosplay to turn men into women and women into men who become domestic servants. Bad acting, bizarre, and the big reveal is no surprise. Begins and ends with psycho-babble. 4.5/10
69. The Sins of Rachel (1972)* (SWV Gender Bender Double Feature)
A former singer who is writing her memoirs is murdered. Who done it? Her gay son, his special friend, the boy toy she stopping paying or someone else? Poorly made but super trashy and very entertaining. 5.5/10

April 27
70. Dance of the Dwarfs (1983)* Otherworlds TV
An anthropologist searches for a tribe of cannibalistic pygmies but she finds something even stranger. Fun at times with Peter Fonda doing a good job as the alcoholic but competent helicopter pilot. OK creatures. 5/10
71. Polymorph (1996) (Sci-Fi Sinema)
Green slime from space takes over people after they die. Pointless comic book captions were a warning sign but the film grew on me as I watched. Fair action, sometimes silly acting, and an unexpectedly downbeat end. 4.5/10
72. Frankenstein '80 (1983)* Otherworlds TV
A reporter investigates the theft of a new formula and subsequent killings. Rather bland Dr. F and monster, no cool lab scenes. Seems to have been seriously cut, mostly the actual murders, but i don't think they would have helped. 4/10
73. Big Guns aka No Way Out(1973)* (Crime Boss Collection 6 DVD Set)
A mob hitman wants to retire but the leaders accidentally kill his wife and child which leads to mayhem and bloodshed. Few surprises but the story is well told and the acting is very good. Sone nice action and suspense. 6.5/10

April 28
74. Legacy of Blood (1978)* (The Dungeon of Andy Milligan) Blu-ray
A remake of The Ghastly Ones but more polished. Three sisters and their husbands gather at their childhood home for the reading of their father's will. One of the better Milligan movies so far. 6/10
75. Whirlpool (1970)* (Blood Hunger The Films of Jose Larraz) Blu-ray
The road to debauchery is paved with booze, special cigarettes, and strip poker. Arty sexploitation about a beginning model who spends a weekend in an isolated house with a photographer and his aunt. Downbeat and memorable. 7.5/10

April 29
76. Fleshpot on 42nd Street (1973)* (The Dungeon of Andy Milligan) Blu-ray
The life of a hooker who surprisingly finds herself in a real relationship. Lots of sleazy street characters and clients along with many explicit sex scenes. Good story but I thought it was too long. 5.5/10
77. Seeds (1968)* (The Dungeon of Andy Milligan) Blu-ray
An insanely dysfunctional family gets together at Christmas with murderous results. This movie was a blast. Crudely made but with a WTF moment around every corner. The quack doctor and his nurse were icing on the cake. 6/10
78. The Monster of Camp Sunshine (1964)* Blu-ray
The gardener at a nudist camp becomes a homicidal maniac after drinking tainted water. Starts silly and gets even sillier. Not as tedious as I feared but not all that much fun. Quite a bit of nakedness. 4/10
79. Honeymoon of Terror (1961)* On Camp Sunshine disc Blu-ray
Honeymooners go to a deserted island and find terror instead of nookie. After 30 minutes of annoying newly wed bliss we get 30 minutes of a strangely unexciting chase and fights. Little nudity. 4.5/10
80. All Men Are Apes! (1965)* On Camp Sunshine disc Blu-ray
Story about the making of a stripper has lots of dancing, a few tunes, some sleaze, and very strange characters and plot. Tongue in cheek. Almost no nudity. 5/10

April 30
81. The Fury of the Karate Experts (1982)* Streaming Prime
Sequel to The Fist of Death. Basically the same stuff with a few additional characters. A little better since there's less padding and more action (still lame though). 3.5/10
82. Blood (1973) (The Dungeon of Andy Milligan) Blu-ray
The son of the Wolf-man and the daughter of Dracula set up housekeeping in America along with a basement full of carnivorous plants. Played straight but a little silly. A lot of fun though. 5.5/10
83. Carnage (1984)* (The Dungeon of Andy Milligan) Blu-ray
Standard haunted house tale starts out promising but turns out a little dull. Stuff moves by itself but that happens way too often without any scares. A bloody bride pops in once in a while. Ending is OK but doesn't really fit. 4/10
84. Robot Monster (1953)
Classic shlock about gorillas with space helmets invading Earth. I love it. I watched it because I recently got a book about the film and wanted to see it again before I started reading it. 5/10
85. Drive-In Delirium: Maximum '80s Overdrive (2017)* Blu-ray
Finished the challenge with the last hour of this. Not many new to me films but still a lot of fun.

Re: 13th Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge. April 1-April 30, 2022 LIST THREAD

2022

MARCH 31
1) SIEGE (1983) - Tense, well directed Canadian action thriller. After a mass killing, fascist nut jobs track lone survivor to an apartment building where the tenants do not suffer fascist nut jobs gladly. *

APRIL 1
2) THE VIOLENT YEARS - Affluent but neglected teenage girl leads gal gang on rampage of robbery, rape, murder and anti-American activities. Ed Wood scripted, and it shows. *

APRIL 2
3) RAW FORCE - A pleasure cruise with members of the Burbank Karate Club on board run afoul of human trafficking jade dealers and end up stranded on an island inhabited by cackling cannibal monks that can raise dead kung fu fighters to do their evil bidding. Whew!

4) LOW BLOW - Leo Fong vs a cult and Cameron Mitchell earns the easiest paycheck of his career. *

APRIL 3
5) THE TOOLBOX MURDERS (1978) - Titular carnage is handled with gusto in the first half hour or so, then film becomes bizarre psychodrama with Cameron Mitchell terrorizing teen girl he's kidnapped to replace dead daughter. Top notch 70's exploitation builds to disturbing finale.

6) THE SWORD AND THE SORCERER - Fast paced, gory and fun fantasy flick. *

APRIL 4
7) SIX PACK ANNIE - Good natured, over the top hicksploitation comedy. Story follows misadventures of heroine as she tries to raise $5641.87 to save aunt's diner by finding a "sugar daddy". Gets a lot of mileage from considerable charms of star Lindsay Bloom. *

APRIL 7
8) BOSS - Fred Williamson takes on bigots and William Smith in entertaining western directed by Jack Arnold. D'Urville Martin is great as Williamson's loyal deputy. *

APRIL 8
9) NIGHT OF 1000 CATS - Despite a bonkers plot and a lean 63 minute run time (US version), this Rene Cardona Jr. joint is tedious as hell. Star Hugo Stiglitz spends about a quarter of the running time flying a helicopter. *

10) TEENAGE HITCHHIKERS - Sandra (Last House on the Left) Peabody and Chris Jordan are adorable as runaways traveling the country determined to screw the world before it screws them. Plotless and surprisingly charming.

11) SWEET SUGAR - Amusing WIP flick with Phyllis Davis giving a star making performance as (who else?) Sugar.

12) THE FIVE VENOMS - Martial arts classic. *

13) THE REINCARNATION OF PETER PROUD - Interesting if a smidge leisurely supernatural mystery. Features Michael Sarrazin as professor investigating vivid dreams of another life lived. Any past life involving a young Margot Kidder is certainly worth investigating. *

APRIL 9
WEIRD KIDS TRIPLE FEATURE
14) THE CHILDREN (1980) - A busload of kids drives through toxic cloud and transform into black fingernailed zombies who's touch equals death. The means of dispatching the evil tykes is hilariously gruesome. A somewhat slow start, but once action revs up it's a blast.

15) CATHY'S CURSE - Exorcist wannabe is camp classic. Beverly Murray as Cathy's unhinged mother seems straight from John Waters' central casting.

16) NIGHTMARE (1981) - Savini understandably sued to keep his name out of the credits and off the poster for this sleazy slasher epic. Could be improved with a tighter edit, but a good time can be had for those inclined.

APRIL 10
17) TICKS - Impressive practical effects highlight throwback to giant creature features of 1950s. Inexperienced campers run afoul of marijuana farmers and growth accelerated title parasites with expected gory results. *

18) GET CHRISTIE LOVE! - ABC Movie of the Week was pilot for short lived, blaxploitation inspired series. Teresa Graves is charismatic, ass kicking title character - a cop that plays by her own rules but gets the job done. "You're under arrest, Sugar" *

APRIL 14
19) THE JESUS TRIP - Biker flick meets mumblecore art film in meandering story of gang and (willing) hostage nun on the run from angry drug dealers and rogue cops. Action picks up quite a bit in second half and movie manages to finally deliver the expected goods. *

APRIL 15
20) NIGHT TIDE - Moody tale of young sailor in love with unusual woman who may or may not be a mermaid. Early role for Dennis Hopper as the lovelorn seaman. Vivid seaside, carny atmosphere. *

APRIL 16
NEW WORLD PICTURES TRIPLE FEATURE
21) BIG BAD MAMA - Angie Dickinson as desperate mother trying to make a better life for her and two teen daughters in depression era set comedy. Their criminal adventures include crossing paths with professional thief Tom Skerritt and conman William Shatner, with G-Man Dick Miller in hot pursuit. Susan Sennett and Robbie Lee add wacky flava as daughters.

22) GALAXY OF TERROR - Bizarre outer space horror film boasts top notch cast and special effects. Early gig for James Cameron.

23) HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP - Rob Bottin's makeup effects rule in fast paced, gory monster on the loose tale that never takes itself too seriously. Entertaining as hell.

APRIL 17
24) DAWN OF THE DEAD (1978) - George Romero's seminal masterpiece is perfect viewing for the Easter holiday.

25) ROADIE - Sporadically amusing, frequently boring. Features a good performance from Meat Loaf and a great Cheap Trick song. *

26) QUEEN OF BLOOD (1966) - Imaginative and colorful special effects (courtesy of repurposed footage from Soviet films) propel story of alien on board spaceship slowly killing crew. Twist this time is alien is alluring, green skinned female blood drinker. Forry Ackerman cameos as a scientist in pretty good low budget sci fi flick that likely influenced later, pricier epics. *

APRIL 19
27) NINJA III: THE DOMINATION - Sho Kosugi kicks supernatural ninja ass in bonkers martial arts horror film from Cannon Films. Lucinda Dickey shines as telephone linewoman/aerobics instructor possessed by spirit of evil warrior. Stunts and action are top notch, with an opening scene that's one for the ages. *

APRIL 21
28) CLEOPATRA JONES - Cracking action and good performances give juice to story of titular special agent battling drug king pin and corrupt cops. Shelly Winters steals every scene as irrepressible villain called "Mommy". *

APRIL 22
29) HEAVY METAL - Like the animated fever dream of an imaginative adolescent who spent the day playing D & D, listening to Black Sabbath records and leafing through Playboy. Dated and dopey, but I love it.

APRIL 23
30) THE ROOMMATES - Director Arthur Marks' supremely entertaining yarn spins the tale of 4 modern women and the eventful summer they spend at the lake. Frothy story takes an unexpectedly dark turn at the halfway point but still manages to stay breezy. Dynamite cast.

31) TROLL 2 - You can't piss on Troll 2. I won't allow it!

APRIL 24
32) THE FARMER - Relatively low key (with bursts of graphic violence) revenge thriller. Gary Conway produces and stars as WWII veteran returning home to failing farm and being hired to kill men who blinded a mobster. Finally available after being largely unseen for decades. *

33) MESA OF LOST WOMEN - From director Ron (Burning Hell) Ormond comes this interminable hodgepodge of nonsense. A mad scientist played by Jackie (Uncle Fester) Coogan is conducting weird experiments combining women and tarantulas. Not nearly as interesting as it sounds. Flamenco guitar soundtrack is nonstop and annoying. *

APRIL 26
34) EQUINOX - Early work from Oscar winning special effects master Dennis Muren make this student film turned feature worth a look. Four college kids go into the woods to meet a professor and picnic but wind up in possession of an evil tome that puts them on a collision course with Satan himself. The minions are provided by Muren, David Allen and Jim Danforth. Creaky but entertaining. *

APRIL 28
35) BOLERO - Bo Derek stars in this WTF erotic adventure of a virginal young woman traveling the world looking for her first ideal score. Writer/director John Derek seems to have studied at the Ed Wood school of filmmaking (but with a budget). Despite shortcomings film somehow manages to maintain interest throughout overlong running time. *

APRIL 29
36) FIRE AND ICE - Ralph Bakshi and Frank Frazetta combine talents to create a fairly routine animated sword and sorcery epic. Script by comic book legends Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway. *

APRIL 30
37) FLESH FOR FRANKENSTEIN IN 3D - Gloriously and hilariously twisted take on Mary Shelley chestnut is not to be missed. Fantastic 3D and gore effects, a clever script and a more than game cast make this take no prisoners romp a total blast. One of the best Frankenstein flicks ever (even in 2D!).

38) MAMA'S DIRTY GIRLS - Entertaining potboiler with Gloria Grahame as mother with 3 daughters and their quest to land a man "with property" using any means necessary. Candice Rialson co-stars as daughter flirting with punch drunk boxer. Things all work out in the usual 1970's cinema way. *

EPILOGUE
39) BLUE SUNSHINE - Terrific suspense thriller from writer/director Jeff Lieberman. Original, quirky and scary with a bananas lead performance from Zalman King. Arguably Lieberman's best film.

40) HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD - The perfect capper to the challenge is a nice encapsulation for the month of movies. Joe Dante and Allan Arkush pull off a miracle (If it's a good picture, it's a "Miracle") by mixing outtakes and stock footage with newly shot scenes to create one of New World's best pictures.

THE END?
Total:40

Re: 13th Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge. April 1-April 30, 2022 LIST THREAD

Title in BLACK = From my own personal DVD collection
Title in RED = Seen on YouTube
Title in ORANGE = Seen on a streaming service (I will specify which in the movie's entry).

April 1
1. Tombs of the Blind Dead
(1972) Supposed to be a cult classic, but I don't see it (pun intended).

The following movies are from the Drive-In Cult Classics 8 Movie Collection
April 2
2. Pick-Up
(1975) [nudity / drug use] A young man driving a tour bus picks up two hot chicks (hence the title). They then get sidetracked and the bus gets stuck in the swamp. Plenty of nudity to keep things interesting as well as trippy dreamy sequences that makes no sense, but who cares?
3. The Teacher (1974) [nudity] The smoking hot Angel Tompkins stars as a teacher who seduces an 18 year old student, but it's all very innocent like and the kids mom even approves! Angel Tompkins is worth the price of admission alone. By the way, the movie poster's tagline was "She corrupted the morality of an entire school!". Totally misleading since at NO TIME is the teacher ever even close to a school.
4. Best Friends (1975) [nudity / drug use] Two best friends straight out of the Army go on a road trip with two chicks, one of the guys plans to marry one of the girls but his best friend fears that will break up their bromance. The jealous guy's behavior becomes crazier and crazier. Neat road movie with some interesting character dynamics.

April 3
5. Trip With the Teacher
[nudity / sexual violence] (1975) Zalman King, who later directed several erotic movies, stars as a psycho biker who terrorizes a teacher and her students who are out on a field trip. Some pretty violent scenes and Zalman King is just loathsome.
6. The Sister In-Law (1974) [nudity] John Savage (who went on to bigger and better roles) stars as a young man who comes home to his brothers house and is seduced by his sister in-law, the beautiful Anne Saxon who apparently only did this one film, a shame since she's smoking hot and her nude scenes are the highlight of the film. Awkward dialogue and contrived scenes to be sure, but entertaining.

April 4
7. The Stepmother
(1972) [nudity / violence] Awkward crime drama with an Al Pacino lookalike (circa the 90's) who acts like Tony Montana from Scarface. Not enough nudity to make it interesting.
8. Malibu High (1979) [nudity / drug use] The sleaziest of the lot. A slacker high school students turns tricks to better her grades and get money. Things escalate pretty quickly as she turns to a full on life of crime.
That was the last movie from the Drive-In Cult Classics 8 Movie Collection. Moving on...

April 5
9. Weekend with the Babysitter
(1970) [nudity / drug use] A middle aged man hooks up with his babysitter so he can understand the experiences of the youth. Not as creepy as it sounds.

April 6
10. Baise-Moi
(2000) [nudity / hardcore explicit sex / drug use / violence] Exploitation or art film? Probably both. This french film features real explicit sex scenes and loads of violence. Two young women hook up for no reason and go on a killing and sex spree. The director (who is a woman) says there's a feminist message in here somewhere. I'll just take her word for it since I don't see it.
11. Can's Stop the Music (1980) Vehicle for the Village People who are just awesome, with several musical numbers but the best are YMCA (that has to be seen to be believed) and Milk Shake. The comedy is slapstick and the actors say their lines like hyper active crazies. Incredibly enough this movie is two hours long! Some of the non-funny comedy could have been edited but it's mostly entertaining throughout. Valerie Perrine (looking gorgeous) and Bruce Jenner co-star.

April 7
12. Age of Consent
(1969) [nudity] What seems to be a vanity project for James Mason. An Australian painter wants to reconnect with his art by going to a secluded island where he finds a beautiful young girl (a young Helen Mirren) who becomes his muse. Helen's nude underwater diving is worth the price of admission alone.
13. 47 Meters Down (2017) [some gore] A simple premise that makes for a surprisingly effective movie. Great effects and a tight pace. The acting is bad and the characters make stupid decisions (not the least of which is going cage diving) but it's entertaining throughout.
14. Zashchiniki AKA The Guardians (2017) Russian superhero movie with characters reminiscent of the Fantastic Four. The effects range from mediocre to pretty good. The story is totally derivative and the villain sucks but overall an entertaining watch.

April 8
15. Nightwing
(1979) A southwestern community is besieged by vampire bats. Genre mainstay David Warner is an expert who can destroy their colony. The beautiful Kathryn Harrold co-stars.
16. Shadow of the Hawk (1976) Jan-Michael Vicent is the grandson of a native American chief who must come to grips with his heritage and fight an evil curse.
17. Kite (2014) Jailbait India Isley is a teenage assassin who seeks revenge on those who killed her parents. Based on an anime that I've never seen but it's supposed to be a cult classic.

April 9
18. Attack of the 50 Foot Woman
(1993) 90's remake of the 50's cult classic with Daryll Hannah as the titular giant babe.

April 10
19. When Night is Falling
(1995) Very soft-core lesbian romance flick.

April 11
20. The Warrior and the Sorceress
(1984) Selling point here are the boobs: Maria Socas as the titular Sorceress spends the entire film topless and there is an exotic dance number with a woman with four boobs. You heard that right, four boobs. David Carradine sleepwalks through most of it as the Warrior.

April 12
21. Female Fight Club
(2016) / Seen on VIX streaming / Some pretty decent fight scenes. The usual story about underground illegal fight leagues.

April 13
22. The Norliss Tapes
(1973) An investigative author seeking to debunk the supernatural finds more than he bargained for. After his disappearance he leaves behind a series of tapes that tell his story. A precurso to today's found-footage horror films perhaps?
