13th Annual Sci-Fantasy Challenge List Thread

13th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge List Thread
Discussion Thread Here

Rules: Dates: Dusk June 30-Dawn August 1st

Movies/TV shows should be labeled sci-fi or fantasy from either imdb.com or allmovie.com. Other labels don't matter as long as there is at least a sci-fi or fantasy label from one of those sites. Action/Sci-fi would be fine.

If anyone has a problem with something someone watches or just wants an opinion on if it's sci-fi or fantasy or not, ask here.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy documentaries are allowed but not DVD featurettes/interviews. Documentaries include UFO and alien abduction type shows.

As with the other challenges, the lists must be numbered or it won't count.

Use any counting method you prefer, as prize determination does not depend on number of items watched.

3 wild cards for all. Use for those shows you want to watch but know they really don't count but they're pretty close or borderline to counting.

Watching the movie with the commentary will count as an entry.

Watching multiple versions(theatrical and director's cut) of the same movie will also count.

Exceptions: 1: The Tarzan films are eligible to watch and count for the watch list, but not for the check list.
2. Superhero films. If they do not have a sci-fi/fantasy tag, they count for the watch list, but not for the check list.

Audio:

Sci-fi/Fantasy Radio

I'm treating audio harshly since this is primarily a movie/tv challenge. That being said, one episode, 4 hours with commercials, of Coast to Coast counts as one entry. It's the same format for TV, only doubled. The topic of the show has to be sci-fi/fantasy related, so it shouldn't be that much of a problem with Coast to Coast.

If you're listening to something without commercials, or can skip them, you're looking at 3 hours of audio for one entry.

1/4 entry = 45 minutes without commercials and 60 with commercials.

1/2 entry = 90 minutes without commercials and 120 with commercials.

3/4 entry = 135 minutes without commercials and 180 with commercials.

1 entry = 180 minutes without commercials and 240 with commercials.

Finalized Checklist:
Spoiler:
*Watching enough shorts or TV to count as one entry, you can use that one entry as a check on the checklist, as long as each of them count for whatever you're checking. You can mix and match what you've seen to make a check, they all don't have to be grouped together as a single entry on your watch list.

Re: 13th Annual Sci-Fantasy Challenge List Thread

TheBigDave's Sci-Fi/Fantasy Movie Challenge 2020

ALIENS & MONSTER MOVIES
Sphere (1998) - Starts off good, but it falls apart in the second half. ⭐⭐⭐
The Watch (2012) - Should have been better. Great cast. Unfortunately, it's not very funny. ⭐⭐⭐

APOCALYPSE MOVIES
Hell Comes To Frogtown (1988) - It's kinda funny and has some incredibly hot chicks. ⭐⭐

ROBOTS & TECHNOLOGY MOVIES
Bloodshot (2020) - Dumb fun. ⭐⭐⭐

SPACE OPERA MOVIES
Event Horizon (1997) - An underrated horror/sci-fi classic. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Jupiter Ascending (2015) - Excellent special effects, but the story is a confusing mess. ⭐⭐⭐

SUPERHEROES & VIDEO GAME MOVIES
Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) - It was just ok. ⭐⭐⭐
Zoom (2006) - A decent cast is wasted on dumb childish jokes. ⭐⭐

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ = An All-Time Classic. Should be watched every year.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ = Highly Recommended. An excellent movie/show.
⭐⭐⭐ = Good. Worth watching once.
⭐⭐ = Blah. You can find something better to watch.
⭐ = Avoid. Don't waste your time.

Re: 13th Annual Sci-Fantasy Challenge List Thread

12th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge List

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge History - 2008: 32; 2009: 82; 2010: 66; 2011: 45; 2012: 36; 2013: 84.25; 2014: 54; 2015: 50; 2016:38; 2017: 23; 2018: 26; 2019 - 16

Note: I am using the "traditional" counting method - Each film counts as 1; 2 hours of television content counts as 1. I prefer this method for several reasons. The main one being it makes it easier to compare how I'm doing to previous years.

July 3
1. Downsizing
(2017)

July 8
2. Colossal
(2016)
3. A Monster's Call (2016)
4. Colony - Pilot / A Brave New World

June 30 (dusk)
1. The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad (1958)-TV

Watching this makes me feel like I'm 10 again, watching this on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Kerwin Matthews was so hot in this, he deserves to be re-discovered by gay audiences, as a gay man pursuing a career in pre-Stonewall Hollywood.
2. Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers-(1957)-TV
Living in DC, I get a kick out of the climax when the aliens kicking the crap out of DC landmarks like Union Station.
3. First Men in the Moon-(1964)-TV
Unusually for sci-films form this era, Edward Judd as the hero is a dishonest swindler running one step ahead of the law who gets involved with an inventor who has discovered cavorite, an antigravity compound that allows them to fly to the moon.

July 1
4. Defending Your Life (1991)-TV
Like most of Albert Brooks's films, Defending Your Life eschews easy laughs in favor of a nuanced view of relationships and the purpose of life.
5. Captive State (2019)-TV
I really wanted to like this flick about human resistance to an alien occupation, but it just didn't work for me at all, despite a solid performance by John Goodman as a quisling government official

July 2
6. The Final Countdown (1980)-Streaming
Kirk Douglas plays the commander of a US battleship that travels through time to the day before Pearl Harbor.

July 7
7. Outland (1981)-TV
The plot is plagiarized from High Noon and the set decoration and score are cribbed from Alien. Sean Connery plays a space marshal on a mining colony on IO who has to fight the dumbest assassins in the solar system, Frances Sternhagen as the crusty space doctor is the best part of this stupid movie,
8. Yesterday (2019)-TV
The premise is fascinating--what would you do if you were the only person on Earth who remembered The Beatles?--but the movie largely avoids investigating the implications of the premise and turns into a sappy love story. The script has some clever jokes but the lead actor just doesn't have the presence to carry the film.
9. Predator (1988)-TV
GET TO DA CHOPPAH!
10. The Thing (2011)-TV
Pallid prequel to John Carpenter's The Thing.

July 8
11. Godzilla, King of the Monsters (2019)-TV
This movie is the definition of brainless fun. Like Destroy All Monsters, GKotM gathers together the stars of kaiju flicks past: Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidorah for a monster battle royale.
12. Beyond The Edge (2018)-TV
A young con artist working scams in a casino discovers an enemy who uses magic to beat the games. This is a Russian film that unaccountably includes Antonio Banderas in the Slavic cast. Despite having an intriguing premise, the bad dubbing and cheesy CGI really hurt it.
13. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)-Blu
No matter how many times I've seen it that last shot still gets me

July 9
14. Back To The Future (1985)-
Blu
