Re: The 20th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread***

GOALS for 2024:
* Watch at least one movie that fits the day's theme
* Watch the subset films that I haven't seen recently and don't seem too extreme
* Catch up on the new entries on the They Shoot Zombies 2024 list and recent releases I missed
* Have fun

RUNNING TALLY:
* 85/100 movies watched - 61 First Time Views
* SUBSET list - 31/47

* THEME NIGHTS - 33/33 - I did at least one movie for theme each night
* CHECKLIST - COMPLETE
1910's - 0; 1920'S - 1; 1930'S -1; 1940'S - 6; 1950'S - 1; 1960'S -5; 1970'S - 8; 1980'S - 16; 1990'S - 8; 2000'S -7; 2010'S - 7; 2020'S - 21

SEPT 30: INDIE/ARTHOUSE CROSSOVER
1. I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE (1943) [imported blu ray] - ★★★★✰- I watched this years ago, and I liked it even more this time. I love vintage horror and there's something about Val Lewton films that are just a little more edgy, quirky, and dark. There are some iconic images in this film, particularly the section in the sugar cane field--the women with their flowing gowns, the tall stalks, the coming upon skulls and dead animals, the uber creepy zombie guard. The voodoo ceremony was pretty authentic, surprisingly. It must have been shocking in the 40's. All in all, a great film.
Watched for: Subset, theme night
2. INVISIBLE MAN RETURNS (1940) ☼ [blu ray] - ★★✰✰✰ - .First time watch. It was pretty dull. A rather pedestrian plotline about a framed man. Vincent Price is the invisible man, so you only see his face for the last minute of the film, unfortunately.
Watched for: Actor: Vincent Price
3. DR TERROR'S HOUSE OF HORRORS(1965) [blu ray] - ★★★✰✰ - I mainly watched this for Donald Sutherland. He's very young in this--all ears and amazing blue eyes. A few of the stories were unexciting, but I like Christopher Lee's and Donald Sutherlands. The framing device of the men in a train car and one of them reading the fortune of the rest using tarot cards was fun.
Watched for: Actor: Donald Sutherland, Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee; The word "Horror" is in the title

OCT 1: TEXAS CHAINSAW 50TH ANNIVERSARY
4. THE REAPING (2007) ☼ [Amazon streaming] - ★★★✰✰ (3.5 stars) - This was pretty good. It's been awhile since I've seen a new religious horror movie. This one has a creepy small Southern town conspiracy, biblical plagues, and an investigation plotline. Hilary Swank was decent in the lead and Indris Elba was awesome. The ending was pretty cheesy, but that's often the case with religious horror. I'd recommend it.
Watched for: THEME: shot in Texas
5. THE TRAP (2024) ☼ [Amazon streaming] - ★★★✰✰ - .I usually like Shyamalan's films, so I was looking forward to this one. I thought it was kind of a dud for the first hour. The concert sequence went on too long. I thought the whole film was going to be at the concert. Once they left, it picked up a bit. I liked the last 30 minutes or so and the ending. "Lady Raven" is apparently Shyamalan's daughter, and she did a nice job. A bit too on the nose Taylor Swift knock-off, plot wise, but she was good.
Watched for: Director: M Night Shyamalan
6. THE HYPNOTIC EYE (1960) ☼ [Amazon streaming] - ★★★✰✰ - (3.5 stars) .A delightfully creepy horror-slash-noir-detective movie. The case involves beautiful women who are mutilating themselves unaccountably. They track some of the victims to a stage hypnotist played by Jacques Bergerac, who is truly compelling. If you like b&w noir, you might enjoy this. BEWARE though -- there are some intense flashing strobe effects.
Watched for: Sub-genre: Hypnosis

OCT 2: UNUSED THEME
7. ZEDER (1983) ☼ [blu ray] - ★★★✰✰ - . Interesting. The plot involves a writer who gets a used typewriter. On the ribbon he finds type from a letter written by the previous owner. It draws him into an investigation of an arcane theory about how, if you bury the dead in certain archeological areas associated with the Delphi Oracles and other supernatural events, the dead can come back to life. It's a slow-burn, think-y kind of horror without a lot of gore or murders, but I liked the occult theory and there are some genuinely scary moments. The ending was good.
Watched for: THEME - this movie is on "The Definitive Guide to Horror Movies" unused theme. It's also new on the They Shoot Zombies list for 2024
8. TERROR AT LONDON BRIDGE (1985) ☼ [Amazon streaming] - ★✰✰✰✰ - .Quite bad. First of all, if you're going to have a premise that involves the return of Jack the Ripper, you might wanna research his actual, historical M.O. In this movie he slits throats and that's it. That's not the Ripper's MO. Also his outfit does not feel authentic for the Ripper. It's sort of puritan American. David Hasselhoff was awful and there wasn't enough of Adrienne Barbeau. Also, it's hard to imagine a location LESS like foggy London than bright, sunny, hot, flat Lake Havasu. Blah.
Watched for: Checklist - 2 Actors - Adrianne Barbeau and Clu Gulager

OCT 3: GIALLO
9. THE SPIDER LABYRINTH(1988) ☼ [Amazon streaming] - ★★★✰✰ - .An interesting little giallo. A professor is sent to investigate a colleague in Budapest who has stopped replying. He was working on some "important project", which we later find out was about a cult involving a spider. Or spider gods. Of course the cult is alive and well (if drooling web-fluid can be called well) and determined to keep their secrets hidden. I loved the Euro scenery and there were some scary moments.
Watched for: Subset film, Theme
10. SALEM'S LOT (2024) ☼ [Amazon streaming] - ★★★★✰ - .Damn! That little kid is the bomb. I want him on my side in any fight. The bit with the drive-in screen was brilliant. Overall, a nice adaptation of a classic. The cast is all unknowns, but it doesn't detract from the production. I've been waiting for this, and I wasn't disappointed. There are some genuinely terrifying scenes in the novel, and this movie delivered. The glowing eyes were super effective.
Watched for: Checklist: based on a novel; based on a Stephen King story

OCT 4: ANTHOLOGIES
11. GHOST STORIES (2017) [blu ray] - ★★★★★ - Happy to watch this again. Amazing British ghost story anthology. So many twists and turns. Martin Freeman and the entire cast were brilliant.
Watched for: Subset film, Theme
12. RETURN TO SALEM'S LOT (1987) ☼ [Amazon streaming] - ★✰✰✰✰ - It was a mistake to watch this right after Salem's Lot (2024), because, by comparison, this was god-awful. Just felt very low-budget and cheesy and really had very little to do with the original Salem's Lot story other than the fact that it was a town inhabited by vampires. None of the characters were the same. I'm shocked that somehow Cohen got permission to use the name of King's work for something like this.
Watched for: Checklist: written by Larry Cohen; a movie in a franchise you've never seen
13. SATANIC HISPANICS (2022) ☼ [Amazon streaming] - ★★★★✰ - I really enjoyed this. Some of the segments were pretty dark, but the vampire one was hilarious and maybe the best thing I've watched this challenge.
Watched for: Checklist: female director, folk horror, language: spanish

OCT 5: TEXTPLOITATION
14. SUPERSTITION (1982) ☼ [dfigital file] ☼ - ★★✰✰✰ - Definitely a cheapie. The acting and production values were sub-par. Overall a forgettable watch.
Watched for: Subset film, Theme
15. TARGETS (1968) [Criterion blui ray] - ★★★★✰ - This is such a brilliant meta piece--about the changes in horror films and society. And, as others have pointed out, a beautiful finale for Boris Karloff. The (now) vintage LA setting is fun and the killer is creepily normal. I wish we'd seen a bit more fallout from the highway shooting, but I suppose that wasn't the point of the film. I enjoyed the look and grainy feel of the Criterion blu ray.
Watched for: Subset film, Theme
16. FATAL GAMES (1984) ☼ [Amazon streaming] ☼ - ★★✰✰✰ - I found all the javelin deaths a little repetitive. Mostly a forgettable 80's slasher. I was annoyed at the transgender stuff. I know it was the 80's, but it's rather offensive now.
Watched for: Subset film, Theme
17. AMISH WITCHES: THE TRUE STORY OF HOLMES COUNTY (2016) ☼ [Amazon streaming] - ★★★✰✰ - Obviously, this is a fake documentary. There is such a thing as Pow-wow (Amish folk medicine) and brujas (practicioners), which could be called witches, though their rituals and charms use God, so they are white witches at most. The "dark force" in this story is fiction. But I enjoyed the scenery in this and found the costumes and homes authentic. If you approach it as a fake, found-footage film, it's not bad.
Watched for: Checklist: Found Footage, fake documentary
17.5. THE REAL AMISH WITCHES (2018) ☼ [Hulu streaming] - ★★★✰✰ - The Real deal. A one-hour documentary about legit Amish brujas. Pretty awesome.
Watched for: Checklist: Documentary

OCT 6: CHRONOLOGICAL
18.5. THE HANDS OF ORLAC (1924) [digital file] - ★★✰✰✰ - Interesting in parts but very, very slow. And the over-acting! Orlac's wife, especially, was comically over the top.
Watched for: Subset film, Theme
19.5. THE QUEEN OF SPADES (1949) [digital file] - ★★★✰✰ - This feels more horror-adjacent than horror, though there were some fun supernatural bits at the end. As solid 40's b&w drama. I enjoyed the Russian gothic scenery, especially the funeral scene.
Watched for: Subset film, Theme
20.5. FRANKENSTEIN AND THE MONSTER FROM HELL (1974) [blu ray] - ★★★✰✰ - One of the better Hammer's, IMHO. Some gnarly mad scientist/medical procedure stuff (how to remove a brain in 3 easy lessons!) and an all-around strong cast. Peter Cushing is commanding, as always.
Watched for: Theme
21.5. eXistenZ (1999) ☼ [digital file] - ★★★★✰ - I liked this a lot more than I expected to. Since I have been a game designer and have worked on large projects, I loved the game meta narrative of this movie, like the reverence for the game designer and how the other characters could only respond if they recognized the prompt. There could have been more of a point to the game--it was really more of a series of weird settings than a real game. But, overall, super fun.
Watched for: Subset film, Theme

OCT 7: SLASHERS
22.5. SILENT SCREAM (1979) ☼ [digital file] - ★★★✰✰ - This is a pretty decent slasher I've never seen before. It's about four college students who rent rooms in this big, creepy house on the ocean. The digs are pretty sweet but the family who lives there are completely psychotic. Unlike many slashers, this one includes two police detectives who are investigating the first murder, which adds a nice angle.
Watched for: Theme, They Shoot Zombies list
23.5. HALLOWEEN H20 (1998) [4k disc] - ★★★★✰ - Watched this again in 4K. One of my favorites in the franchise.
Watched for: Theme

OCT 8: TROPES
24.5. LEVIATHAN (1989) ☼ [blu ray] - ★★★✰✰ - Great cast in this Alien/The Thing knock-off, and the underwater aspect adds to a sense of claustrophobia. But it felt kind of by-the-numbers.
Watched for: Theme (nature's wrath)
25.5. DEATH BECOMES HER (1992) [Amazon streaming] - ★★★✰✰ - A fun movie--more comedy than horror but there's some gnarly body stuff. Great ending.
Watched for: Theme (dark and stormy night)
26.6. THE SEVENTH VICTIM (1943) [4K] - ★★★★✰ - I love Val Lewton's weird/twisted gothic sensibility. A classic.
Watched for: new 4K Criterion release

OCT 9: STALKER/VOYEUR
27.5. THE MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN (2008) [amazon streaming] - ★★★★✰ - I love the Investigaton and mystery aspect of this, though the gory bits are a bit much. it's an interesting story, a nice bit of city folklore.
Watched for: Subset movie, theme
28.5. APARTMENT 7A (2024) ☼ [amazon streaming] - ★★★✰✰ - Rosemary's Baby is one of my favorite films, so I was excited about this prequel. I enjoyed the story, but I thought the female lead was very weak. It could have been so much better. Roman and Minnie were good.
Watched for: a movie in a franchise you haven't seen yet (Rosemary's Baby)

OCT 10: WOODS
29.5. TURISTAS (2006) ☼ [amazon streaming] - ★★✰✰✰ - A Hostel knock-off without the originality or satisfying ending.
Watched for: They Shoot Zombies list
30.5. THE CORRUPTION OF CHRIS MILLER (1973) ☼ [digital file] - ★★★✰✰ - TBD
Watched for: Subset, theme
31.5. CURSE OF CROM (2022) ☼ [Amazon streaming] - ★★★✰✰ - TBD
Watched for: Checklist - rating PG-13

OCT 11: BOUTIQUES LABELS
32.5. MY GRANDPA IS A VAMPIRE (1992) ☼ [VOD] - ★★★✰✰ - tbd,.
Watched for: Theme, Subset

OCT 12: SCHLOCK
33.5. BURYING THE EX (2014) ☼ [digital file] - ★★★★✰ - Super cute horror-comedy.
Watched for: checklist - watch 2 films with similar plots
34.5. LIFE AFTER BETH (2014) ☼ [ [Amazon streaming] - ★★★✰✰ - A fun twist on the zombie genre. The zombie apocalypse starts with just one dead girl coming back--the main character's dead girlfriend. At first, everyone is thrilled. But she gets weirder and weirder and more dead come back. It was a nice break from some of the darker movies this month and a solid cast.
Watched for: checklist - watch 2 films with similar plots
35. INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE - s01 e07 (2022) ☼ [[Amazon streaming] - ★★★★✰ - I love this series! In this episode Lous and Claudia kill Lestat. Quite the season finale.
Watched for: just because

OCT 13: STUDIOS
36. CASE 39 (2009) [Amazon streaming] - ★★★✰✰ - Decent big budget psychological horror movie about a social worker who adopts an abused child only to learn the little girl is evil incarnate. Enjoyable watch. I saw this years ago but remembered very little.
Watched for: They Shoot Zombies list
37. MAD LOVE (1935) [digital file] - ★★★★✰ - A quirky remake of The Hands of Orlac, which we watch earlier as a subset movie. Peter Lorre is brilliant.
Watched for: Subset, Theme (MGM)
38. THE MANITOU (1989) [Amazon streaming] - ★★★✰✰ - This film is so good in some respects and so awful in others. The manitou, when he appears, is just laughable. Terrible casting for that. But still, a great cast otherwise and a fun 70's throwback.
Watched for: Checklist - rating PG
38.5. INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE - s02 e01 (2023) ☼ [[Amazon streaming] - ★★★★✰ - Nice start to the new season. Louis and Claudia in war-torn Europe circa WWII looking for other vampires.
Watched for: just because

OCT 14: MONSTERS/CREATURE FEATURES
39.5. DARK WAS THE NIGHT (2014) [Amazon streaming] - ★★★★✰ - Really enjoyable creature feature in which a small town is attacked by something from the woods. I like the small-town vibe, and the characters were all likeable and relatable. Lucas Haas plays a deputy, and it was fun to see him again.
Watched for: Theme
40.5. A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE (2024) ☼ [Amazon streaming] - ★★★✰✰ (3.5 stars) - The original alien attack as seen by New Yorkers. I liked the originality of having a hospice cancer patient as the main character. It gives the action a slightly different intensity. Like "I'm dying, but not yet, and not by you mf'ers." The action was decent though the CGI was obvious. Also: award for the chillest cat ever.
Watched for: Theme

OCT 15: TWO WORD SCARES
41.5. THE PSYCHIC (1977) [blu ray] - ★★★★✰ - A very plotty, twisty Fulci giallo in which a woman has a vison of a murder and tries to track down the killer only to find herself in danger. A solid thriller,
Watched for: Theme, They Shoot Zombies list
42.5. POST MORTEM (2020) [Amazon streaming] - ★★★✰✰ - I love the idea of a movie about a man who takes photos of the dead in 1911, and the setting of the old Polish village is cool. But the story drags in the middle--a lot. The ending, however, is intense.
Watched for: Theme
43. INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE - s02 e02 (2023) ☼ [[Amazon streaming] - ★★★★★ - The Theater of Vampires lives up to expecations!
Watched for: just because

OCT 16: POV HORROR
44. AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN PARIS (1997) [Amazon stream] - ★✰✰✰✰ - This is so, so, so bad. How is this on the They Shoot Zombies list?
Watched for: Theme (POV horror), They Shoot Zombies list
45. THE CRIMSON CULT (1968) [Amazon streaming] - ★★✰✰✰ - This is a pretty dull affair. It never works when they try to incorporate the "swinging sixties" with the old gothic Hammer stuff.
Watched for: producer Tony Tenser
45.5. INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE - s02 e03 (2023) ☼ [[Amazon streaming] - ★★★✰✰ - Lestat is the highlight, as always.
Watched for: just because

OCT 17: WEREWOVES
46.5. NIGHT OF THE HOWLING BEAST (1975) [Amazon stream] - ★✰✰✰✰ - Not my cup of tea at all. During the early bits we were chuckling at it, it was so ridiculous. But then it just got boring. So intentionally lurid.
Watched for: Theme
47.5. CURSED (2005) [Amazon stream] - ★★★✰✰ - This was much better than I expected given the low rating. I thought it was a decent modern werewolf flick.
Watched for: Theme; Actor - David Mears
48. INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE - s02 e04 (2023) ☼ [[Amazon streaming] - ★★★★✰ - Great episode. The Paris coven is getting ready to strike.
Watched for: just because

OCT 18: MASHUP
49. MAXXINE (2024) [Amazon stream] - ★★★★✰ - I liked this better than Pearl. The 80's LA vibe was fun, and Maxxine isn't quite as wacko here, just determined. She barely kills anyone! It helps that my hubby is a huge Hollywood history buff and he really enjoyed watching this with me.
Watched for: Theme, SUBSET
50. THE LIVING DEAD GIRL (1982) [Amazon stream] - ★★✰✰✰ - This is just OK. I'm not a big Jean Rollins fan. There's not a lot of story in this. It's basically a one-note plot - a young woman comes back from the dead and needs human blood. Her bff helps her get victims to survive. The rest is bare skin and set dressing.
Watched for: They Shoot Zombies list; director
50.5. INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE - s02 e05 (2023) ☼ [[Amazon streaming] - ★★★✰✰ - Flashback to Daniel's story. I liked that the series creator added something new to the Anne Rice story, but Daniel's character back then (come to think of it, also now) is so unlikeable and Armand is such a villain here. I prefer the Paris timeline.

51. INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE - s02 e06 (2023) ☼ [[Amazon streaming] - ★★★★✰ - Back to Paris with Madeline's story. I really like her (the character and the actress) even though I know from the books this won't end well. This episode set up the last two episodes of the season, which should be amazing. Finally -- the real Lestat!

OCT 19: VIDEO
52. BLOOD GAMES (1990) [digital file] - ★★✰✰✰ - This film has a female director and it's filled with T&A. I dunno. Was she luring in male viewers to show them the worst kind of toxic male energy? I found it kind of a mess. Feels low-budget and repetitive in the plotline--guys attack girls, girls fight back, rinse, repeat..
Watched for: Theme, SUBSET
53. ROSEMARY'S BABY (1968) [digital file] - ★★★★★ - Brilliant from start to finish. Maybe my favorite horror movie of all time.
Watched for: Watch a movie and its remake back to back
54 & 55. ROSEMARY'S BABY (2014) - 2 episodes each 1.5 hours long [Amazon streaming] - ★★★✰✰ - I enjoyed the changes in this version, such as the new setting in Paris and the younger Roman and Minnie. The things that were exactly the same didn't hit as well because they couldn't compare with the original (which I'd just rewatched). An okay remake.
Watched for: Watch a movie and its remake back to back
55.5. INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE - s02 e07 (2023) ☼ [[Amazon streaming] - ★★★✰✰ - The trial of Louis and Claudia and the return of Lestat. The return of Lestat was a little disappointing mainly because you don't really get a reunion between Louis and Lestat. They're on stage, on trial, the whole time. Lestat is great, of course. The trial was a little too sad and we get the death of Claudia. :-( Not an episode I wanna rewatch.

OCT 20: VAMPIRES/ZOMBIES
56.5. HUMANIST VAMPIRE SEEKS CONSENTING SUICIDAL PERSON (2023) [digital file] - ★★★★✰ - I quite liked this unique spin on a vampire tale. Nerds rule. Plus it's a nice lighter movie for this point in the month.
Watched for: Theme, SUBSET
57.5. LISA FRANKENSTEIN (2024) [digital file] - ★★★✰✰ (3.5 stars) - This movie tries hard to have Tim Burton charm, and it comes close. I liked the offbeat characters and the story was fun. The "On the Wings of Love" bit was hilarious.
Watched for: Theme, SUBSET
58.5. THE DEAD DON'T DIE (2019)[digital file] - ★★★✰✰ - Rewatch. What a fabulous cast. The humor in this sometimes falls flat, but I still enjoy seeing Bill Murry and Adam Driver fight zombies.
Watched for: Theme, Actor Larry Fessenden

OCT 21: CORMAN
59. INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE - s02 e08 (2023) ☼ [[Amazon streaming] - ★★★★✰ - Season finale and all we get until S3 comes out some day. Amazing,
Watched for: just because
60. HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP (1980) [blu ray] - ★★★★✰ - I've seen this before and loved it both times. I have a soft spot for creatures attacking small towns, especially harbor towns. So fun.
Watched for: Subset, theme
61. INFESTED (2023) ☼ [Amazon streaming] - ★★★★✰ - (3.5 stars) Fun spiders attack movie. The cast of characters was likeable and unique and the spider effects gnarly.

OCT 22: ROAD
62. HOCUS POCUS(1993) ☼ [Amazon streaming] - ★★★★✰ - a seasonal favorite. I was in the mood for something lighter,
Watched for: just because
63, THE HITCH-HIKER (1953) [Amazon streaming] - ★★★✰✰ - Very 50s in feel. The story was predictable but had a nice noir flavor.

OCT 23: TEENAGED WASTELAND
64. ONCE BITTEN (1985) ☼ [blu ray] - ★★✰✰✰ - My husband summed it up like this: I can't believe Jim Carrey had a career after this. SO so bad.
Watched for:THEME

OCT 24: PASSPORT
65. THE LAST WAVE (1977) ☼ [blu ray] - ★★★✰✰ (3.5 stars) - Really interesting. Very mystical/spiritual. I can't say I understood all of it, but I loved how unique it was. Aboriginal apocalypse story.
Watched for:THEME - Australia
66. THE CARRIER (1988) ☼ [blu ray] - ★★✰✰✰ - Pretty heavy-handed with the meta stuff. Not a great script, acting, or production values. Meh.
Watched for: OMHC favorite list

OCT 25: JOE BOB BRIGGS
67. THE NEW KIDS(1985) ☼ [digital file] - ★★★✰✰ -Wow, this went from After School Special to super, super dark. Overall, I liked it. Interesting cast and the story moved forward well. The two "good kids" were quite likeable. James Spader is EVIL.
Watched for:Subset, theme
68. BLACK FRIDAY (1940) ☼ [blu ray] - ★★★✰✰ - Decent 40's crime thriller/horror with Lugosi and Karloff. Karloff plays a doctor who transplants a friend's brain with a criminal's brain. Spoiler: it doesn't end well.
Watched for:
70. Adding 2. I watched 8 episodes of Interview with a Vampire which were 1 hour each with the commentary (commercial free) so counting them as 3/4 instead of 1/2.
71. HAUNTED WEDDING (2024) ☼ [Hallmark] - ★★★✰✰ - WILDCARD/HORROR ADJACENT - Quite an unusual theme for a Halmark romance. Two enthusiastic ghost hunters are getting married, and they choose a haunted hotel for the nuptials. From orbs to saving lost souls to sage burning, someone worked on this who is actually into spiritualism. Pretty cool. Not really horror though.

OCT 26: TETRAOLOGY
72. JAWS 2(1978) [digital file] - ★★★✰✰ - I've seen this recently, so the rewatch was predictable. Still, it's a solid flic, and I enjoy it.
Watched for:Subset, theme
73. CREEPSHOW 2(1987) [blu ray] - ★★★✰✰ -Another very familiar movie to me. My favorite segment is the Raft. The hitch-hiker one is just tedious Enjoyed the Stephen King cameo.
Watched for:Subset, theme
74. THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES(2002) [digital file] - ★★★✰✰ - I've seen this several times and always enjoy it. It has a fun investigation/mystery element, though Richard Gere's characters is a bit of a bummer being so morose the whole film. Perfect ending.
Watched for:Subset, theme

OCT 27: CORMAN
75. BLADE II (2002) ☼ [Amazon streaming] - ★★★✰✰ - I get a little bored with the action sequences, but I enjoyed the story and characters. Nice "ensemble of badass characters" vibe.
Watched for: checklist - Composer Malcom Betrami; They Shoot Zombies list
76. CUCKOO (2024) ☼ [Amazon streaming] - ★★★★✰ - Definitely weird but in a good way. The lead actress was terrific and Dan Stevens is the bomb. Highly memorable.
Watched for: just because
77. THE HAND (1981) [blu ray] - ★★★✰✰ (3.5 stars) - A fun disembodied hand movie. I enjoyed the persistent question--is the hand real or is Michael Caine going mad? Fun ending.
Watched for: subset, theme

OCT 28: INVESTIGATION
78. ANGEL HEART (1987) [4k] - ★★★★★ - Perhaps my favorite movie of all time. I love the New Orleans/voodoo vibe, all the creepy religious imagery, the slow burn investigation, and the perfect ending.
Watched for: Theme, Subset
79. PREDATOR (1987) [4k] - ★★★✰✰ - I decided to rewatch this again to hit 31 on the subset list. I've seen it several times. A fun Arnold movie with good characters and loads of monster action.
Watched for: Subset list

OCT 29: SUPERNATURAL
80. ODDITY (2024) ☼ Amazon] - ★★★★✰ - This film has a wonderfully creepy folk horror vibe with the blind psychic and the homumculus/golem statue. I loved that the sister collected cursed objects and could read them. The psychic/paranormal was taken serious in this movie instead of mocking it, so cheers for that. Really good.
Watched for: Theme, Subset
81. JOE BOB BRIGGS BEELZEBUB SPECIAL: LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL (2024) ☼ [Shudder] - ★★★★✰- I've been wanting to see Late Night with the Devil anyway, so I was happy to be able to watch it with Joe Bob. Joe Bob and Darcy were fun, as always. I really liked the film also. The 70's vibe was spot on and even the theme of exorcism was very 70's. It got pretty dark and unnerving at times.
Watched for: just because

OCT 30: DEVIL/WITCHCRAFT/HELL
82. THE FIRST OMEN (2024) ☼ [Amazon] - ★★✰✰✰ - I hated how inconsistent this film was with the original trilogy. Besides that, it was hella boring.
Watched for: Theme, Subset
83. CADDO LAKE (2024) ☼ [Amazon] - ★★✰✰✰- [my second wildcard/horror adjacent film this challenge] This had the potential to be cool. I love the bayou vibe. But the plot and all the various timelines is just confusing and *too* mixed up, like it's trying to hard to be clever. My mother is my sister is my grandmother is my...?? And both lead characters were unlikeable. I normally like Dylan O'Brien, but he was so Eeyore and morose in this. The teen girl lead was a total brat and super unsympathetic.
Watched for: just because

OCT 31: HALLOWEEN
83. HAUNTED WEEN (1991) ☼ [digital file] - ★✰✰✰✰ - I found little to like in this. Horrible acting, horrible script, dull characters, zero production value. I don't get it.
Watched for: Theme, Subset
84. THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE (1946) [blui ray] - ★★★★✰ - One of my husband's favorites. This classic b&w film has wonderfully tense and gothic atmosphere. A gem.
Watched for: Hubby's choice

NOV 1: HORROR/COMEDY CROSSOVER
85. ABIGAIL (2024) ☼ [digital file] - ★★★✰✰ - This was fine as a new horror movie, but I didn't love it. It's billed as a horror comedy, but I didn't find it particularly funny. It seemed to copy Ready Or Not's emphasis on extreme gore (exploding bodies etc) but that fell a little flat for me. I decent first-time watch but not one I'll revisit.

Re: The 20th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread***

Summary

Total Watches 97 New Watches ** 31

September 30th

1, I Walked with a Zombie (1943) - A classic mood piece that emphasizes mood and settings over horror scares. 9/10. DVD

2. The Wolfman (1941) - Lon Chaney as the wolf man is one of the most perfect castings in history. I still think Oliver Reed is the best wolf man ever, but Lon is a very, very close second. overall, this is one of Universal's best monster films. 8.5/10 Blu Ray

October 1st

3. Saw (2004) - The original is still a great film and a unique concept. Its a near perfect horror film that i have raised my score primarily due to the power of the ending.
10/10, Blu Ray

4. Saw II (2005) - Saw II is an excellent continuation and expansion of the storyline from the first film. A solid sequel. 8/10 Blu Ray

5. Freddies Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991) - The low point of the franchise. The video game sequence is horrendously bad. A full blown comedy that is an insult to the character of Freddie Krueger. To make matters worse, the acting is also terrible. 2/10 Blu Ray

6. American Psycho (2000) - A tour de-force performance by Christian Bale as a psychotic wall street executive. The performance is so good that I find I simultaneously find him funny, like him, despise him and fascinated by him all at the same time. 10/10 Blu Ray

October 2nd

7. The Boxers Omen (1983) - Theres a story embedded in this film somewhere, but its essentially an excuse to have as many bizarre and sometimes disgusting set pieces as possible. The basic story is a man is called upon to avenge his boxer brothers death. Once we get past the first ten minutes of setup the film just dives right into an endless parade of some of the most bizarre scenes ever put to celluloid. 8/10 Blu Ray

8. The Boxers Omen (1983) - Listened to the commentary track by Travis Crawford which was excellent. 10/10

9. The Body Snatcher (1943) - A masterpiece in the horror genre and agruably Karloff's best performance. His icy cool, charming, sinister demeanor chews up every scene. 10/10 dvd

10. All My Friend's are Dead (2020) - I was not into this comedy (i guess it was a comedy) at all. A party gets progressively wilder and wilder leading to mass death. That sounds interesting, but it was not. 2/10 streaming **

11. The Whip and the Body (1963) - A masterpiece of gothic cinema. A love story of sexual perversion and sadism. Daliah Lavi is stunningly beautiful and Chris Lee is at his sadistic best. The lighting in each scene is a masterpiece of detail.10/10 Blu Ray

12, New Nightmare (1994) - Not a great film by any stretch, but a definite step up from the last two comedic entries in the series. I was not a big fan of freddies mask. I thought it looked very cheap. I definitely liked the story. 7/10 Blu ray

October 3rd

13. Saw 3 (2006) - I really like how the third film ties in the storylines from the first two films and expands on it. Great ending that echos back to television shows with cliffhangers.8/10 Blu Ray

14. Saw 4 (2007) - I raised my rating on Saw IV because i think the film is a bit more complex than I first thought. Once again, the series main appeal is continuity-the ability to tie in all the previous films very effectively. The concept of time is emphasized effectively in this film.
7/10 Blu Ray

15. Martin (1977) - Listened to the Kat Ellinger commentary. Martin is a unique film from George Romero. It has a documentary feel with extremely unsettling music that really works. The acting is excellent as well. recommended. 9/10 Blu Ray

16. Spiders Labryinth (1988) - What the hell was this? What felt like a gothic/giallo the first half of the film turns into a wild series of bizarre set pieces in the last half. I am not sure how I feel about this one. I do know I was left kinda wishing we had more explanation/backstory. 6/10 Streaming ***

October 4th

17. Saw V (2008) - Another solid entry in the series. I really enjoy the complexity of the story, the interconnectedness of the previous films and the fact that all the victims are chosen for a reason. These films benefit from rewatches. 7/10 Blu Ray

18. Ghost Stories (2017) - A creepy anthology of stories with a wrap around about a guy trying to debunk paranormal experiences of others. A solid film. 7/10 Shudder ***

19. Salem's Lot (2024) -Practically a blow by blow remake of the original and, as expected, not even close to as good as the original. The only real difference is the cast and the special effects. I think the cast was hands down better in the original and the special effects, while technically maybe better, were not as effective due to CGI. 4/10 Max ***

20. Frankenstein meets the Wolfman (1943) - Comfort food for this monster kid. I grew up with this film. Yes, I know Bela is terrible as the monster, but this is really a continuation of the wolfman story which is done very well 7/10 blu ray

21. In a Violent Nature (2024) - A gruesome, brutal and at times tedious love letter to 80s slasher films. No plot. Just a jason like monster walking around killing people, but done with style. The ending is a bit anti-climactic. 6/10 Shudder

October 5th

22. Saw VI (2009) - The interconnectedness of the storyline from the previous films continues with the added benefit of seeing the victims be from the insurance industry (worse than any cartel in my opinion). 8/10 blue ray

23. Saw 3D (2010) - The formula continues, but I think this film is a bit of a step down in the series as the traps and reason for picking the victims borders on parody. 6/10 Blu Ray

24. Fatal Games (1984) - Formulaic slasher that attempts to cash in on the popularity of Sleepaway camp with its sex change javelin throwing killer, but fails due to a lack of interesting characters (victims). 5/10 Streaming

October 6th

25. The Hands of Orlac(1924) - There has been many interpretations of the Hands of Orlac story, but Conrad Veight's portrayal is still the best. 8/10 Youtube. **

26. Superstition (1982) - A creative supernatural slasher. Well acted with some very effective kills. 7/10 streaming

27. Queen of Spades (1949) - A "sell your soul to the devil" period piece that is pretty dull through various stretches of the film. 5/10

October 7th

28. Existenz (1999) - David Cronenberg's take on video gaming blurs the lines between fantasy and reality with outstanding performances by Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jude Law. Having said that, I just wasn't interested. I thought it was silly and uninteresting.
5/10 streaming ***

29. Speak no Evil (2024) - I was excited to watch this, but quickly realized this is just a piss poor copy cat of the outstanding original Dutch film. I use the term copy cat vs reboot/remake for films like this and the new Salem's Lot because they are blow by blow copies of much better films. The point is economics of course, but why continue to churn out unoriginal films? Is there no creativity left in hollywood? 3.5/10 streaming ***

30. Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter (1974) - A monster kid favorite of mine. The vampire genre had kinda run its course by the mid 1970s, but leave it to hammer to injAnotherect a a bit of freshness to the genre with this film, Vampire Circus and Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires. 7/10 scream factory blu ray

31. I Spit on Your Grave (1978) -A tough, but interesting watch that had alot of significance when released and still has an impact because of the social commentary. Watching again, I couldn't help but notice the rape scenes seem overplayed to the point of parody (if thats possible under the circumstances). I have to reduce my rating on this because the setup for the revenge scenes are based on the men being really gullible and stupid. 7/10 blu ray

October 8th

32. The Greasy Strangler (2016) - An interesting Horror/Comedy idea that is a mixed bag. At times I think the comedy works, but just as many times it does not.6/10 Amazon prime ***

33. Mad Love (1935) - A" Hands of Orlac" adaptation, but unique in that the focus of the story is the physician (Peter Lorre) who transplants Orlac's hands. Lorre is in love with Orlac's wife. Peter Lorre is incredible in this film. Highly recommended. 8/10

34. Jigsaw (2017)-The formula that worked well in the earlier films seems to be running its course at this point with alot of forgettable characters. 6/10. Neflix

October 9th

35. Phantom of the Opera (1943) - Way too much opera for me. 6/10 blu ray

36. I Spit on your Grave (2010) - Rape/revenge flicks are tough watches and this remake of the original 1978 film is no exception. The 2010 version is one of the few remakes that I feel is better than the original predominately because the revenge portion was more realistic and brutal than the orginal which in my opinion was almost cartoonish. 8/10 Blu Ray

37. Beyond Terror (1980) - My second viewing of this film didn't change my opinion. Problem one for me is that there are no characters to empathize with. Most of the characters are leeches on humanity. It is nice to see the crooks get payback, but we don't really care because they are such scumbags. The second problem is that the horror elements take way too long to get going. 6/10

38. The Midnight Meat Train (2008) - A violent, bloody trip into the mind of Clive Barker. A solid horror flick. You don't often get the chance to see Brook Shields and Bradley Cooper in a splatter flick. 7/10 Blu Ray

39. The Hills have Eyes (1977) - A definite horror classic from the 70s. A commentary on the inner animalistic nature of man even as he has become "more civilized". 8/10 Blu Ray

40. The Hills have Eyes (2006) - I think this is a near perfect remake of the orginal and one of the rare exceptions where the remake is better than the original. 9.5/10 blu ray

October 10th

41. The Invisible Man (1933) - A classic and the special effects are amazing to this day. 10/10 Blu Ray

42. The Corruption of Chris Miller (1973) - A complex love triangle with a great payoff ending .7/10 Youtube

43. The Devil (1972) - What the hell was this? 5/10 ****

October 11th

44. The Invisible Man Returns (1940) - Vincent Price gets wrapped in bandages in this sequel to the invisible man. Cedric Hardwicke was excellent as the bad guy and Price was good, not great, as the crazed invisible man. 7/10 Blu Ray

45. The Invisible Woman (1940) - The series takes a comedic turn, but not for the better. 6/10 Blu Ray

46. The Hills have Eyes 2 (2007) -This sequel to the Aja remake of Hills is really just an excuse to have mutant looking monsters kill people, in this case its a national guard group. Siimple plot, but well executed with some really gruesome moments. 7/10 Blu Ray

October 12th

47. My Grandpa is a Vampire (1991) - Al Lewis is great as a vampire. A decent one time watch 6/10 Streaming ***

48. Def by Temptation (1990) - A solid Succubus story with an all black cast. well done. 8/10 streaming

October 13th

49. Maniac Cop (1988) - Maniac cop is a fun 80s slasher film in the vein of Friday the 13th with a different setting of course. The formula is the same and the cop angle works great. 8/10 Blu Ray

50. Maniac Cop 2 (1990) - A solid sequel and I think as good as the original 8/10

51. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) - This film is a classic and it just gets better each time I watch it. All star cast and the interplay between them is outstanding. 10/10

October 14th

52. Psycho Cop (1989) - A low budget copy cat of Maniac cop, but zero plot, forgettable characters and routine kills. 5/10

53. Psycho Cop Returns (1993) - Entertaining and funny follow-up to the first Psycho Cop film. The Vinegar Syndrome Blu Ray is awesome. Recommended. 7/10

54. Predator (1987) - A near perfect action horror flick. 10/10

October 15th

55. The Ring (2002) - A videotape that results in death when watched contains a dark family secret. This US version of the Japanese classic is a decent film that is well acted and pretty much follows the exact plot of the original film. There was a period where every successful foreign horror film got an English made version. I don't really have an issue with it because Ironically enough most I have seen are decent (example Let me in). 7/10 ***

56. Sax X (2023) - Apparently an "intersequel" that picks up the story between parts 1 and 2 and gives significant background on the Jigsaw character. I enjoyed it and thought it was one of the best of the series. 8.5/10 ***

57. Land that Time Forgot (1974) -I remember when this came out as a kid and the advertising was iconic. The special effects were suprisingly effective given the budget. This was Doug McClure's breakout film. 6/10 youtube

58. Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell (1974) - Peter Cushing's final performance as Victor Frankenstein was just awesome. A highly under rated Hammer film. 7/10 Blu Ray

October 16th

59. Maniac Cop 3 Badge of Silence (1992) - The story is mess and the production values look cheaper than 1 and 2, but still the film is an enjoyable watch.6/10 Blu Ray

60. Freddy Vs Jason (2003) - Multiple viewings, but this recent one I definitely noticed how heavy the parody/comedy is in this film. Its kind of a shame this film wasn't made with a more serious horror angle. 6/10

61. Longlegs (2024) - A interesting slow burn that plays more like a police procedural than a horro film for the first hour. The final act was a definite payoff, but, we need more Cage! 7/10 ***

October 17th

62. Invisible Agent (1942) - Typical WWII theme about an Invisible man who infiltrates the Nazis. Everything is very light heared and fun. A decent watch. 6/10

63. The Invisible Man's Revenge (1944) - John Carradine plays a scientist who makes a fugitive invisible so he can get revenge on a corrupt business partner. Decent watch. 6/10 Blu Ray

64. Abbott and Costello meet the Invisible Man (1951) - Standard Bud and Lou antics, but enjoyable. I liked the boxing angle. 7/10

October 18th

65. Girlhouse - This was a solid slasher/stalker flick. The kills were brutal and effective in the style of Halloween. 7/10****

66. Night of the Howling Beast (1975) - Classic Paul Naschy and we do get a Yeti battle at the end. 7/10

October 19th

67. Maxxxine (2024) - A solid film but not quite as good as X or pearl. Mia Goth was excellent. 7/10 ***

68. Blood Games (1990) - A fun, fast paced back woods flick about a battle between a girls baseball team and the slime ball men's team turns deadly. 7/10

October 20th

69. Lisa Frankenstein (2024) - A coming of age teen romance/horror story about a girl in love with a zombie. A good one time watch ruined by two REO speedwagon songs. 5/10 ***

70. Humanist Vampire seeking consenting Suicidal person (2023) - I give the creators of this film an A for coming up with a unique concept in the wll worn vampire genre. 7/10 ***

71. The Boogeyman (2023) - Modern houses with no light switches?? The house is pitch black the entire movie. Pretty silly and dull. The setup had promise, but the execution was bad. 4/10 ***

October 21st

72. Blackout (2023) - Larry Fessenden is a talented guy. He consistently turns out quality low budget independent films that come off bigger and better than their budget should allow. This werewolf story is no exception. It is a well done classic story concept of man's inner struggle with demons. I also greatly appreciate the in camera makeup and effects. 8/10 ****

73. Humanoids from the Deep (1980) - Genetically altered frogs (guys in rubber suits) cause havok on a small fishing town. My kind of horror flick. 8/10

74. Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) - This movie gets way more hate then it deserves. I thought the acting all around was solid, including Jackie Earl Haley. The CGI and Freddies look was not as good as the original and the film is a shamless remake, but I cant trash it just for that. There are some good moments in this film and the callbacks to the original were done well. 6/10

75. I Spit on your Grave 2 (2013) - These films are tough watches and my rating reflects my admiration for the actress that played Katie and the intensity of the film vs a rating based on whether I like it or not. Rape/revenge is a tough genre to watch for me. I feel like I need to take a shower after. 7/10

76. The House with a Clock in its Walls (2018) - A boy goes to live with his warlock uncle played by Jack Black. Not a fan of Jack Black, but he was good in this one. 7/10 **

October 22nd

77. Horrors of Malformed Men (1969) - A strange, dream like experience that really pays off in the final act. I dont want to give away plot points. just watch it. 8/10 ***

78. Syncronic (2019) - An interesting watch that involves a over the counter drug that can cause a person to travel back in time. The acting was solid. 7/10 ***

79. The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945) - There has been at least five adaptations of this story. The 1945 film is good, but extremely talky and flat. Even the ending is anticlimatic. 5/10

October 23rd

80. The Hitcher (1986) - An iconic film that grows in status as the years pass. There are plenty of questionable moments, but no one can deny how great Rutger Hauer was in the film. 9/10

81. Look What's Happened to Rosemary's Baby (1976) - An all star 70s cast star in this TV movie follow up to Rosemary's Baby. The story covers early childhood and as an adult with the focus on the Satan worshipping cult still trying to exert control. Interesting watch.
6/10 ***

82. I Spit on Your Grave # Vengeance is Mine (2015) - I am raising my rating on this follow up to the reboot. I really enjoyed this character study of jennifer and how she tries to cope with the horrible events of the first film. Smartly done with less emphasis on explcit scenes, although there are plenty. 8/10

83. Spiral The Book of Saw (2021) - The Saw franchise takes a slightly new angle with a Jigsaw wannabe eliminating corrupt cops. I shamelessly enjoyed this one. 7/10

84. Immaculate (2024) - An interesting modern take on the "Rosemary's Baby" story. 7/10 ***

October 24th

85. I Spit on your Grave Deja vu (2019) - Horrendous dialogue and acting combined with a ridiculous runtime of 2.5 hours make this film a real endurance test. Id give no rating if possible ***

86. Don't Deliver Us from Evil (1971) - Two young girls gradually progress in their fascination with doing evil deeds. Interesting with a solid ending. 7/10 ***

87. Mute Witness (1995) - A deaf woman witnesses a murder and is then pursued by a Russian mob. Great setup and I enjoyed the first half of the film, but the third act is silly and becomes a parody. 6/10

October 25th

88. The Vampire (1957) - Moody, atmospheric, but also stagy and stiff. A decent one time watch. 6/10

89. The Vampire's Coffin (1958) - A tepid sequel to The Vampire. 5/10

90. The Nude Vampire (1970) - Only Jean Rollin and Jess Franco can create the dream like imagery seen in their films. Definitely a film you have to pay attention. 7/10

91. Hostel (2005) - Gruesome, but a great film 8/10

92. THe New Kids (1985) - I cant believe I never saw this until now. James Spader was a great asshole . 7/10 ***

93. The Mothman Prophecies (2002) -I really enjoyed this film and Gere's performance as a reporter who startes hearing "visions" after the traumatic loss of his wife. Interesting film. 7/10

October 29th

94. Nightwatch (1994) - A decent watch, but a bit long on run time. 6/10

95. The Hand (1981) - Probably one of Oliver Stone's weakest films. 5/10

October 30th

96. HauntedWeen (1991) - I enjoy low budget films and I admire the effort here, but unfortunately the film painfully drags with the lack of a real story and the "payoff" kills are terrible. 2/10

97. Oddity (2024) - A slow burn story filed with many creepy moments. 7/10 ***

October 31st

Film comments:
Spoiler:

October 01
01. Horror in the High Desert (2021)* Screambox 3.5/10
Bland, lackluster story about the disappearance of a young man who is an expert in wilderness survival told in the form of a documentary with a bit of found footage at the end. The acting is OK and the story could have been interesting but there is no tension or suspense and the big reveal is just what I expected. There is one nice bit of aural creepiness near the climax of the film but that's it for scares. Also there are scenes in which the main character is supposed to have been in the wilderness for weeks but he looks like he just strolled out of his house freshly showered and dressed for prep school. Not a chore to watch but not very entertaining.

October 02
02. Phantom Ship aka The Mystery of the Mary Celeste (1936)* Prime 6/10
Heavily cut US version of an early Hammer film about what might have happened to the crew of the Mary Celeste, the famous ghost ship found deserted in the Atlantic ocean. After a few explainable deaths, members of the crew start tuning up dead or disappear. Well done and engrossing even in this edited version. Bela Lugosi is very good in the part of a one armed sailor who has a hidden vendetta with the first mate.

October 03
03. The Quatermass Xperiment aka The Creeping Unknown (1955) 7.5/10
Three astronauts go on the first manned rocket into space but only one returns and he is unable to speak and is suffering from strange changes to his body. I've always preferred the other two Hammer Quatermass films but this viewing gave me a new appreciation of this one. There are a lot of great chilling and disturbing touches here, including a score by James Bernard that keeps the tension high, some of the shots and cuts by director Val Guest, and the cold, emotionless hero played by Brian Donlevy. I also love the 1950's technology and equipment. The creature in the finale is well designed but doesn't move very well.

October 04
04. The Abominable Snowman (1957) 6/10
A scientist and a showman go on a dangerous expedition in the Himalayans search for a Yeti. This is an interesting science fiction story with some good ideas, a few touches of horror and a solid cast. When I saw this on TV as a kid I really disliked it - you never really got to see the monsters! I like it more now since I can appreciated the ideas and think what we see is just fine.
05. The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) 7/10
Well done version of the story with a good cast, elaborate and colorful sets and an interesting take on Dr. Frankenstein. Peter Cushing shines as the obsessed, sociopathic doctor.

October 05
06. Dracula aka Horror of Dracula (1958) 8/10
Good retelling of the Dracula story with a few story twists that worked fine for me. Peter Cushing is perfect as Van Helsing and Christopher Lee is both suave and savage as Dracula. Michael Gough is a happy bonus. Dracula's castle is impressive and there are some nicely atmospheric scenes there and in various tombs and lonely country roads. The finale is action packed and the effects still hold up.

October 06
07. The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958) 6.5/10
The good doctor escapes certain death and continues his work under a different name. Starts out a little slow although with an elaborate lab and various detached body parts. The last third of the movie picks up the pace and gets rather crazy. Peter Cushing is once again good as Dr. F. but except for his crippled assistant, Karl, the rest of the cast is somewhat bland. I liked it but not as much as the original.

October 07
08. The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959) 6/10
Good version of the famous story. There are some nice creepy moor scenes and some around a ruined abbey and in an old mine. Baskerville Hall is impressive both inside and out. Great cast but the one who impressed me the most was not Peter Cushing as Holmes (although he is good) but Andre Morell who plays an almost perfect Dr. Watson as a competent, everyday man and not comic relief.

October 08
09. The Mummy (1959) 5.5/10
Kharis awakes from his living death to seek revenge on those who desecrated the tomb of his beloved Princess Ananka. This film looks great with impressive use of color, good sets, and elaborate costumes. Christopher Lee as the mummy is fearsome, especially on his first rampage, muck encrusted from a dip in a bog. But I never really could get too excited about the story. Bits and pieces from several Universal mummy movies appear in the plot but some things like the flashback go on too long

October 10
10. The Man Who Could Cheat Death (1959) 5/10
A doctor and talented sculptor has a horrible and deadly secret. Typical story of the type where Dr. Whoever needs to get a human body part to keep something going. Again, the film looks good. Taking place in 1890's Paris there is a nice period feel and there are a few nifty tricks involving the color green. But the whole thing is bland and moves kind of slow. Even the effects for the big finale are a letdown.

October 12
11. The Stranglers of Bombay (1959) (Icons of Adventure) DVD 5.5/10
In India, a captain in the East India Company suspects that a mysterious cult is responsible for thousands of disappearances, including an entire caravan. Fun movie with a good sense of place and some creepy and horrific scenes including eyeball piercing, tongue removal, and hand severing although these are not shown in detail. There is also a cool jungle temple devoted to Kali. Guy Rolfe is an appealing hero.
12. The Brides of Dracula (1960) 7/10
A young school teacher falls in love with a baron who is one of Dracula's spawn. The film looks good and also has a very interesting story with some fresh takes on a typical vampire yarn. Peter Cushing is once again excellent as Van Helsing and David Peel is good as the bloodsucking baron but I still missed Christopher Lee. A standout performance by Freda Jackson as the crazed human who serves the vampire is icing on the cake. In this story, some vampires can turn into bats which is a mistake since the bats don't look that good but are better than the Universal versions. Also the end was a bit of a letdown with they way the Baron was dispatched.

October 13
13. V/H/S Viral (2014)* Prime 3/10
Although I liked the first two films in the series, I didn't care for this one very much. The framing story is confusing and kind of stupid. The first two segment concern a magician and and his demonic prop and an inventor who creates a machine so he can visit a parallel world. These are interesting but except for a very minor scare at the end of the first are not frightening. The third about skateboarders fighting a Mexican cult is stupid, nasty, and mean spirited and has way too much shaky cam but isn't scary at all.

October 14
14. The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll (1960) 6.5/10
An interesting take on the Jekyll/Hyde story with some major variations form the traditional movie versions. Jekyll is married to a cheating wife who is having an affair with his best friend, a debt ridden alcoholic wonderfully played by Christopher Lee. Also Hyde is not an ugly brute but rather a handsome sociopath and more attention is paid to Hyde wanting to be rid of Jekyll than Jekyll trying to stop Hyde. All these provide a very different tone to the story which I found very absorbing.

October 15
15. The Curse of the Werewolf (1961) 6.5/10
Hammer's version of a werewolf tale gives a very different origin for the creature. After a bit of bloody mayhem at the start there is a very long but interesting build up to the main werewolf action which is very satisfying. There isn't ever a full transformation scene but the monster looks good and star Oliver Reed does a nice job portraying the anguish caused by the curse. As always the sets create a solid sense of time and place.
16. The Shadow of the Cat (1961) (Universal Horror Collection Volume 6) 7/10
A house cat is the only witness to the murder of his mistress and terrorizes those responsible. Well shot black and white film has lots of suspense and good performances especially by Andre Morell as the frightened uncle and Freda Jackson as the even more frightened housekeeper. There are also cat-vision scenes and a little romance. The movie runs out of gas a little at the end.

October 16
17. Taste of Fear aka Scream of Fear (1961)* (Icons of Horror Hammer Films) DVD 6.5/10
A young woman who cannot walk visits her father's home after ten years away and finds that he is out of town but she keeps seeing his dead body all over the estate. Good, twisty crime drama with a strong element of horror. I saw one of the major twists coming but was taken by surprise by another. Christopher Lee plays a suspicious doctor as part of a fine cast. A well filmed black and white thriller. If I saw this before I remembered nothing about it so I called it a first time view.

October 17
18. The Phantom of the Opera (1962)* (Hammer Horror Collection) 6/10
Hammer's take on the well known story has many differences from the 1925 version. It is nowhere near as atmospheric as the older version but the Phantom's lair looks good and the colorful and lush sets help to make up for that. Standard good Hammer acting with Michael Gough a standout as an arrogant, dishonest composer. The story moves at a good pace and was very entertaining for a story I'm not particularly a fan of. As far as I can tell I never watched this version before.

October 18
19. The Damned aka These Are the Damned (1962) Tubi 5.5/10
An American tourist and an English woman discover a secret scientific project while on the run from a gang of vicious Teddy Boys. Entertaining but much more science fiction than horror. A product of the post-war a-bomb paranoia. I didn't find the whole JD thing all that interesting and the sets were a bit on the cheap side but the acting was fine and the film was well made. I didn't think I had seen this before but I quickly realized that I had.

October 19
20. Kiss of the Vampire (1963) 6/10
A newly wed couple gets involved with vampires when their newfangled motorcar runs out of petrol near a small isolated town. Story reminded me a little of some Italian gothic films. Again a very good looking Hammer production with an interesting and different kind of vampire story. Not super atmospheric but there is a slight underlying mood of menace. The cast is good if not outstanding but the head vampire played by Noel Willman looks the part.

October 20
21. Paranoiac (1963) (Hammer Horror Collection) 7/10
A young man who was thought to have committed suicide eight years ago returns to his family home weeks before his deceased parent's will is to be fulfilled. A crime drama with strong elements of horror. There's madness, and questions about just who is insane, hook wielding masked killers, hidden corpses, and chats with the dead. The sets are good and the acting is fine, especially Oliver Reed.

October 22
22. Maniac (1963) Tubi 5/10
A woman and her new lover help her husband escape from an insane asylum where he was unjustly committed. Interesting, twisty crime drama with just the slightest touch of horror. There's lots of potential - the film starts out with an acetylene torch to the face (offscreen) and there were other opportunities. There are some good locations used and the acting is OK.
23. The Old Dark House (1963) (The William Castle Film Collection -- Sony) DVD 5.5/10
A car salesman is stuck in an isolated house due to a storm while the family members living there start turning up dead. Remake of the 1932 film shares only the broadest strokes (storm, old dark house, strange family) but there is a lot in common with the eld, dark house genre. Horror comedy gave me a few chuckles and was a pleasant watch. William Castle directed this Hammer production but there didn't seem to be any of the Castle gimmicks.

October 23
24. The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb (1964) 5/10
After being taken to London, an Egyptian mummy starts killing those who desecrated its tomb. Another Hammer mummy movie I had trouble getting into. The film looks decent with a few spectacular moments but the cast isn't as good as the first film and there are too many flashbacks that slow things down. The story is interesting and a little different but the mummy just doesn't look that scary.

October 24
25. The Evil of Frankenstein (1964) 7.5/10
A reboot of the Hammer Frankenstein movies still has Peter Cushing as the doctor but he is a little more human while still being obsessed. The lab scenes are more elaborate and the story moves faster while still having some interesting ideas some nods to the Universal films. The monster looks more like the Universal version while still not a copy. There is not quite as much atmosphere though.

October 25
26. The Gorgon (1964) 7/10
The story of the gorgon put into more modern times. Some very atmospheric scenes and a strong cast, including Lee and Cushing, with effective matte shots make this very entertaining. The gorgon looks a little rough and not all of the effects are equally good but the story is interesting even if there's really no mystery about where the gorgon is hiding.
27. Satan's Little Helper (2004)* Shudder The Last Drive-in With Joe Bob Briggs 7/10
Fun story about a boy, obsessed with a video game about the devil, who goes trick or treating with a serial killer who he thinks is Satan. Funny, bloody, and sometimes very twisted with a very good cast and a witty script. The killer has a great mask and costume.
28. Late Night with the Devil (2023)* Shudder The Last Drive-in With Joe Bob Briggs 8/10
In the 1970's a late night talk show on the verge of cancellation does a Halloween special with a mystic, a skeptic, and a teenage girl who can channel a demon. Things don't go well, Evokes the time period and situation very well and is full of tension and scares. The cast is fine and the script is intelligent but the end is a little confusing and could be considered a weak point but I thought it was OK.

October 26
29. Nightmare (1964)* (Hammer Horror Collection) 7/10
A young woman who saw her mother kill her father when she was a child is plagued by nightmares and when she returns home from boarding school the dreams get scarier and more realistic. Very entertaining thriller full of twists and with some very creepy and atmospheric scenes especially in the first half of the film. More horror elements than some of these black and white thrillers and the cast does a good job overall.
30. Die! Die! My Darling! aka Fanatic (1965)* Prime 6/10
A woman is held captive by the overly religious mother of her deceased fiancee. Classic horror situation although less brutal than we'd see today. The script is by Richard Matheson and Tallulah Bankhead plays the mother with Stefanie Powers as the captive. The cast does well and the story is full of suspenseful moments but for some reason this did not grab me as much as I thought it would.
31. Antlers (2021)* Paramount+ 6.5/10
A school teacher tries to help an 11 year old boy who shows signs of abuse but the truth is even more shocking than she suspects. Absorbing story which often defies expectations. Set in Oregon but in a low income small town with a run down look that contrasts with the majestic scenery in the background. Also, all of the main characters are broken human beings in one way or another although they deal with life as well as they can. Very dark and sometimes depressing but with some very creepy and disturbing scenes and a decent looking creature which is enhanced by dim lighting. Jeremy T. Thomas who plays the boy is particularly good here.

October 27
32. Dracula: Prince of Darkness (1966) 7.5/10
Dracula is resurrected from a pile of dust and threatens four very dense British travelers who are lured to his castle. Christopher Lee returns as Dracula in this well done film that I liked almost as much as the original. The actors playing the two human lackeys are quite good and Andrew Keir as Father Sandor is a worthy replacement for Van Helsing. Lots of eerie scenes in the castle and the nearby forest. The revival scene is outstanding but I'm starting to get the feeling that vampires are just too darned easy to foil and even kill.
33. The Plague of the Zombies (1966) 6.5/10
A London doctor goes to an isolated Cornish village to help one of his former students with a mysterious disease.
Interesting, well paced story with some above average acting especially from my new Hammer fav Andre Morell who always adds a touch of class and John Carson as the main baddie. Michael Ripper has a larger role than usual. The sets are typically good Hammer work although some of the zombie makeup is a little rough. These are voodoo zombies and not Romero zombies.

October 29
34. Rasputin The Mad Monk (1966)* 7/10
Fictionalized account of Rasputin's life. Christopher Lee is outstanding as the mad monk and there is a nice Imperial Russian feel done the Hammer way. This is a horror movie since Rasputin has healing powers and can hypnotize people. There are also several murders and an acid in the face scene.
35. The Reptile (1966) 6/10
A married couple move to a small Cornish village to live in the house of the husband's deceased younger brother who died in somewhat mysterious circumstances. Offbeat Hammer film featuring eastern magic in England. The makeup for the victims is quite gruesome although the creature makeup is a bit dodgy at times. The cast is generally good with a bonus that Michael Ripper has a sizable and signifiant role aiding the leads.

October 30
36. Gallery of Horror (1967)* B-Movie TV 2/10
Awful anthology movie directed by David L. Hewitt. The stories are predictable (often from the first minute or two), the dialog is terrible and the acting is even worse. The best parts are John Carradine's introductions to each story. Ugh.
37. The Witches aka The Devil's Own (1966)* 6.5/10
A woman, who suffered a nervous breakdown after a bad experience with witch doctors while in Africa, takes a job as a school teacher in a small rural village where she quickly notices that all is not right. Starts out very strong with a great prelude in Africa and then an interesting supernatural mystery to uncover in the village. This is set in modern (for 1966) times so is has a different flavor than most other Hammer horror. There are some tense and suspenseful scenes along the way but the movie falls apart at the end with a particularly ridiculous costume for the big bad and an even sillier ceremony. Also the main villain isn't much of a surprise. Still, a decent script by Nigel Kneale.
38. 10/31 Part 2 (2019)* Screambox 6/10
Five more Halloween themed horror shorts hosted by Malvolia. The first concerns a babysitting job that goes very wrong, the second is about an Uber driver contemplating suicide who picks up an unusual passenger, the third deals with a native American burial ground, number four presents slashers on Halloween night, and the fifth tells the tale of a nun who strays from her faith with disastrous results. My favorites were the first, which has the most scary moments, and the fourth which was bloody and fun. None of the others were bad but all had problems being too long or too short for much substance.

October 31
39. Lady Morgan's Vengeance (1965)* (Arrow Gothic Fantastico) 6/10
A woman falls in love with an architect disappointing her childhood friend but later marries him when her true love is reported dead. The first part is an OK crime melodrama but things pick up and get a little crazy in the second part when ghosts begin to appear. There is a blocky looking ancient mansion with narrow stairways, creepy corridors, and a dungeon. Some of the outdoor scenes are foggy and atmospheric.
40. The Midnight Hour (1985)* YouTube 6.5/10
Just before a big Halloween party a group teenagers read a spell to raise the dead in a graveyard. Whoops. ABC TV movie isn't scary but it is a lot of fun with a few laughs along the way. The cast has some familiar faces including LaVar Burton and Kevin McCarthy and there are a lot of great tunes played by Wolfman Jack on the radio.
41. Ghostwatch (1992)* Shudder 7/10
BBC TV movie presented as an actual broadcast about a TV crew going to the most haunted house in Britain on Halloween night. Very absorbing. The strangeness starts slowly but builds to an explosive crescendo. The mystery of the haunting unfolds gradually and is never revealed for certain and the end is a little ambiguous but it was good enough not to spoil my enjoyment.
42. The Thing That Couldn't Die (1958) (Universal Horror Collection Volume 6) 5/10
A still living severed head with hypnotic powers from the time of Sir Francis Drake is unearthed while a psychic is dousing for water. Mayhem follows as the head searches for the rest of its body. This minor Universal effort is a little sluggish at times and the script and acting are OK but near the lower end of B movie goodness. Still, Robin Hughes who plays the head is creepy at times and provides a scare or two.
