Chronological Horror Years Faceoff - Chapter 6

1943 (Diamond) Vs. 1968 (Gold) Vs. 1993 (Silver)

Spoiler:

Son of Dracula dates the original Count Dracula as being destroyed in the 19th-century, when the original novel was set.

The following year, the Dracula-related series continued with House of Frankenstein in 1944, and House of Dracula in 1945,
both of which starred John Carradine as the original Count Dracula.
The famous arrival of Dracula's coffin by train was reprised in Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948).

While Brewster and Lazlo speculate that he might be a descendant of the original Dracula, congruent with the film's title,
Katherine tells Frank that "he is Dracula". However, he is described as his descendant in the 1943 press kit.

This is the first Universal Dracula film to take the Count out of Europe and bring him to America.

Brainee's 2019 DVDTalk Horror Movie Challenge List

Previous challenge totals:
2008: 100
2010: 100
2011: 53
2013: 54
2014: 36
2015: 56
2016: 106
2017: 101.25
2018: 70
2019: ??? (My 10th October Horror Challenge!!!)

Goal: Dare I aim for ... 100?!?
Total: we'll see
First Time Views: we'll see

= first time viewing

Movies rated out of 5 stars (*****) based solely on my personal enjoyment.

September 13th (Bonus day for Friday the 13th and Full Moon)
1. The Black Cat (1934): The first and best of the Karloff/Lugosi pairings. I love that they are on equal footing and both have plenty of opportunity to shine. Watching them go at it in this movie is like watching hated rivals in a sports fight. Even when being civil to each you can see the hatred in their eyes. They escalate the jabbing and prodding until things just explode at the end. The look of the movie is incredible. And while numerous things in the story don't hold together (at times feeling like large sections of the film were edited out) it always remains fascinating. ****1/2

2. The Black Cat (1941): While my memories of the 1934 The Black Cat are strong, I didn't remember much of this (despite knowing I watch it a few years ago as part of a Universal horror DVD set). Rewatching it's not surprising why I forgot it ... the plot is a variation of the generic "relatives gather at creepy house for will reading and a killer is among them" (which was probably cliche even in the early 40s). There are some interesting names in the cast but they aren't given much interesting to do (Lugosi in particular is practically invisible). And there is a heavy dose of comic relief that typically annoys me when I try to enjoy an old classic horror movie (to the intent that imdb is probably correct listed "comedy" under this movie's genre ahead of "horror"). Still, these old movie zip by (with running times just over an hour) and there's enjoyment to be found. It has more of a claim to be based on the Poe story than the 1934 film and the big finale (set in a cat crematorium) is genuinely exciting. ***

3. Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943): I was going to cue up the original The Wolf Man, but it had been a long while since I've seen it's sequel (and I never watched my Blu-Ray of it) so I changed my mind. This was ok but not as good as I remembered it. Lugosi really doesn't look right as Frankenstein's monster. I still don't get how the Lawrence Talbot character was resurrected (so you kill a werewolf by shooting it with a silver bullet ... but if you dig up his grave and let the light of the full moon hit his corpse he comes back to life? ). And the ending was awfully abrupt, and anyone looking forward to the huge climactic battle between the two titular monsters was likely to come away disappointed. ***

4. Ginger Snaps (2000): My first rewatch since this was relatively new and I think it holds up. Though the low budget and lack of film-making experience reveal themselves at times (like with the werewolf effects, which were wisely limited), this still manages to be very effective at walking the lines between funny, scary, and at times moving. While you see the cast and crew of some low-budget indie movies disappear, it's telling that the main people involved with this (like actresses Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle and director John Fawcett) launched careers in entertainment. ****

5. Cat People (1982): I can understand how many people don't like this movie. Those coming for a horror movie will find themselves with a soft-core romantic fantasy for the most part. But non-horror fans will likely be put off by the gore (not to mention the creepy incest angle of the story). But this has always been a favorite of mine. Nastassja Kinski was an early celebrity crush of mine (I was an early teen when this came out) and she's at her most captivating here. There's prime Malcolm McDowell who's always a fun actor to watch. Georgio Moroder and David Bowie's music set a great atmosphere. I like the New Orleans setting and it's a very stylish-looking movie. ****

FEATURE PRESENTATION

Friday, September 13, 2019 - BONUS DAY!
1. [1 pt] Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI (1986, Blu-ray)
Started this after a day at work, then walking the stands at the high school selling 50/50 raffle tickets for the parents' association. As expected, I only got to the one movie... barely. Getting old sucks.
