It's time, once again, to take a look at your dusty, unopened box sets, your unwatched stacks of Blu-rays, DVDs, HD-DVDs, LDs, VHS or Beta tapes, your DVR, your Netflix queue, etc., and decide what you think you should spend 31 days watching. Now's your chance to finally watch all the stuff that didn't fit, or that you just didn't get around to, during the other Challenges.

Since you choose your own Challenge theme, you make the rules.

There are however a few guidelines which everyone should follow.
The Challenge runs from April 30th at dusk to June 1st at dawn.

Please state your challenge theme and your challenge goal and rules (if any) at the top of your list(s) in the list thread so others can tell what you're doing.

Please don't duplicate an existing "Official" DVD Talk Challenge.

This guideline is mainly here so we don't subtract from participation in any of the other Challenges, and to encourage participants to focus on genres not already covered by a Challenge, but since everyone's "need to watch" list is different, and you're able to watch stuff that qualifies for one or more of the other Challenges during every other Challenge, you're free to narrow the focus of one of the broader "Official" Challenges.

For example; Say you only collect horror, then you could make your Challenge to watch just horror films, or just horror TV shows, or just zombie films, etc. Or if you have lots of unwatched Sci-Fi, then your MYOC could be just watch Sci-Fi movies, or watch Star Trek shows, or watch TOS, etc.

Since we already have Monthly "Unwatched Media Pile" Threads, please do not use that as a theme.

During past MYOCs, people weren't happy with this being used as a theme, and I tend to agree that it is a little lazy. So please give a little thought to your theme and come up with something a little more creative.

The One and Only (1978) - Charming rom/com and some fun wrestling nostalgia. ⭐⭐⭐
Revenge of the Nerds (1984) - I loved this movie in the 80's, but now it feels dated. ⭐⭐⭐


HORROR MOVIES
Carrie (1976) - 5 Stars for the last 20 minutes. 3 Stars for the rest. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Legend of Hell House (1973) - One of my favorite haunted house movies. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Maniac Cop (1988) - I enjoyed this much more than I expected. ⭐⭐⭐
Next of Kin (1982) - Decent slow burn thriller with a crazy ending. ⭐⭐⭐
Prince of Darkness (1987) - Underrated and very creepy. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Return of the Living Dead (1985) - The ultimate punk zombie horror/comedy flick. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Return of the Living Dead II (1988) - Some funny gags, but missing the charm of the original. ⭐⭐⭐
Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers (1988) - Goofy slasher/comedy is stupid fun. Extra points for lots of boobs. ⭐⭐⭐


SUSPENSE MOVIES
Blow Out (1981) - De Palma's best film. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
D.O.A. (1988) - Twisty neo-noir mystery with a good cast. ⭐⭐⭐
Dressed to Kill (1980) - Sexy, stylish, and keeps you on the edge of your seat. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Obsession (1976) - Stylish and great locations, but predictable twists. Not one of De Palma's best. ⭐⭐⭐
Sisters (1973) - Early De Palma thriller feels low budget, but has some memorable scenes. ⭐⭐⭐


⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ = A Classic. One of my all time favorite movies.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ = Highly Recommended. An excellent movie. Worth buying.
⭐⭐⭐ = Good. An average movie. Worth a rental.
⭐⭐ = Blah. Not too good. Find something better to watch.
⭐ = Avoid. A really awful movie. Don't waste your time.

$1) Cike Nie Yin Niang (The Assassin) (2015) - A really good looking, slow as hell historical drama. I guess it was worth a buck as a reference disc.

$2) Panic in the Streets (1950) - A naval doctor and a police detective hunt down people exposed to a deadly virus. Great movie - well worth a buck.
Panic in the Streets (1950) w/ commentary by film historians Alain Silver and James Ursini - A really good, informative commentary that made me like a movie I already liked even more. They stayed on subject at least 95% of the time.

$3) Wild River (1960) - A guy working for the TVA during the Depression tries to evict the final holdout in a valley which will soon be flooded because of a new dam. This movie was way ahead of its time. It feels more like a movie made in the seventies than in 1960. Another great buy.
Wild River (1960) w/ commentary by film historian Richard Schickel - Okay commentary. He definitely knew the subject, but he just wasn't all that interesting to listen to.

$4) Yi Ge Ren De Wu Lin (Kung Fu Killer, Kung Fu Jungle) (2014) - A kung fu prisoner is released from prison to help Hong Kong cops find a kung fu serial killer who is killing top kung fu masters. Not bad. Worth a buck.

$5) The Power of Few (2013) - Several lives and stories intermingle one day in a low-income neighborhood in New Orleans. It wasn't great, but it's worth a buck for a watch if you enjoy nonlinear stories.

$6) The Proposition (2005) - Dark Australian "Western" - A policeman captures a criminal and his younger brother, and says the younger brother will hang in just over a week unless the older brother captures and returns their oldest brother, the leader of a ruthless gang of outlaws. This one has a commentary track, but it wasn't exactly a "feel good" movie, and I don't feel like listening to it right now.
$7) The Man with the Iron Fists 2 (2015) - A sequel to a movie I haven't seen. The Man with the Iron Fists fights some guys, then falls into the water and disappears for around twenty minutes. He finally washes ashore in a mining village where a warlord is mistreating the miners in his silver mine. I could've done without the hip-hop music, but it was an okay time-waster. There's a commentary track on the Blu-ray that I might give a listen to before the end of the month.

$8) Acts of Desperation (2018) - - The lives of six desperate, confused, criminal idiots intermingle in this darkly comic low-budget movie. Paul Sorvino is in it, but it looks like his scenes (all in the same office) were shot in a day. Nothing great, but I didn't hate it.
$9) Pillow Talk (1959) - Rock Hudson is a womanizing songwriter who shares a party line with interior decorator Doris Day. Doris Day is upset because she can't work from home because he always seems to be on the line with one of his girlfriends. Tony Randall plays Rock Hudson's best friend, a wealthy bachelor in love with Doris Day, and after hearing him talk about her, and later seeing her in person, Rock Hudson sets up a scheme to win her over. A genuinely funny, silly, "clean sex comedy."
Pillow Talk (1959) w/ commentary by film historians Jeff Bond, Julie Kirgo, and Nick Redman - Pretty good commentary.

$10) Jing cha gu shi 2013 (Police Story: Lockdown) (2013) - A passably entertaining Chinese Die Hard knock off which "borrows" heavily from the novel - a middle-aged cop (Jackie Chan) is visiting his estranged daughter at work at Christmas when some bad guys take over the building (for mysterious reasons), taking everyone hostage, and the cop has to defeat the bad guys before they blow up the building. Other than the basic plot, it was different enough from Die Hard to hold my interest.

$11) The Horseman (2008) - A brutal and bloody Australian revenge flick. After a young woman is raped and murdered, her knife wielding father hunts down and slays the pornographers who did it. Pretty decent flick, if you're in the mood for something rough.

The Horseman (2005) - I guess this was a test for the full-length movie. A guy's home alone when an exterminator shows up at the door. He lets him in, and while talking, the exterminator gives him a DVD that he says will explain why he is there. The guy plays the disc and sees a woman being raped on screen by someone. Then the two start a long fight throughout the guy's house. (This was sort of what happened in the first deleted scene I watched earlier, but the guy in the deleted scene used a videotape.) Then the remainder of the short is pretty much the same as the opening scene of the full-length movie. Anyway, after watching two films called The Horseman, I've come to the conclusion that "horseman" must be Australian slang for exterminator.
The Horseman (2005) w/ commentary by writer/producer/director/editor Steven Kastrissios - Yep, he says this short was a test made to help him raise money for the feature. He also does a commentary on the feature, so maybe I'll check it out.
$12) The Warrior's Way (2010) - Ultra-stylish movie about an Asian swordsman who refuses to kill a baby that belongs to an enemy clan, then runs away with the baby to the American West, where he starts a new life in a dusty town full of circus folk and other assorted weirdos. A live-action cartoon with lots of blood and cartoon physics. I liked it.

The Warrior's Way (2010) - Deleted scenes
$13) Inescapable (2012) - A wealthy Syrian-Canadian businessman's daughter disappears in Damascus, so he goes looking for her, stirring up secrets from his past. Plodding, but not unwatchable.
$14) Dog Eat Dog (2016) - Nicolas Cage, Willem Dafoe, and some other guy are three low-life criminals committing crimes for hire for another guy. Their latest "gig" is kidnapping a baby to force its father to pay his debts to another criminal. An odd film, and I wasn't bored, so it was worth a buck at least.

$15) Howard Lovecraft & the Undersea Kingdom (2017) - Another sequel to a movie I haven't seen. Some crap about a young H.P. Lovecraft, and his pet baby Cthulhu, fighting monsters. Man, this was terrible: Bad animation (which might have been impressive in the '90s, but now, not so much). A boring, completely uninteresting story. It was a buck wasted, for sure.
For the Love of Lovecraft, An Interview with Jeffrey Combs- Jeffrey Combs (man, he got old) talks about H.P. Lovecraft for a few minutes. Hell, I didn't even realize he was in the movie (it didn't help it any), but this was the best part of the Blu-ray.
$16) Batman Ninja (2018) - Well, I had forgotten that the previous film was based on a graphic novel, so when I went to shelve it with the comic book movies where it belongs, I saw this one I bought at Dollar Tree a few months back, and figured I'd give it a look (found a code for a digital version that I didn't expect). It's a Batman anime where Gorilla Grodd uses a time machine to transport Batman, a few allies, and some of his enemies to feudal Japan. Weird (the giant transforming robots were a bit too much), but interesting enough that I'll watch the dubbed version sometime.
$17) Gwen (2018) - Since it's "A Shudder Original," I was expecting a horror movie. What I got was a plodding drama about a single mother and her two daughters living in Wales. Yeah, I shoulda skipped this one and saved that dollar.

$18) The Standoff at Sparrow Creek (2018) - After a mass shooting at a policeman's funeral, seven militia members hide out in a lumber warehouse, while one of them, an ex-cop, interrogates the others, looking for the one responsible. Not bad. I wasn't bored, so it was worth a buck.
$19) Köshpendiler (Nomad (The Warrior)) (2005) - An epic story about two Kazakh warriors (one of whom may be a prophesied savior - a descendant of Genghis Khan who is destined to unite all the Kazakh tribes and lead them to victory against their enemies) who are both in love with the same woman. Pretty good (although there's nothing new here really - aside from the location), with plenty of panoramic scenery and sword fights, and lots of men on horseback battling with swords, and spears.

$20) Hatsukoi (First Love) (2019) - A drug heist planned by a crooked cop and a young yakuza goes awry, beginning a deadly comedy of errors featuring cops, the Yakuza, some Chinese gangsters, a boxer, and a prostitute. A fun, bloodstained action comedy directed by Takashi Miike.
$21) Good Neighbours (Good Neighbors) (2010) - While a serial killer is loose in Montreal, a guy moves into an apartment and gets to know his neighbors. Entertaining enough.

$22) Bayou Caviar (2018) - Cuba Gooding Jr. plays an ex-boxer turned bouncer who goes to work for Russian mobster Richard Dreyfuss (who owns an alligator farm which he uses to dispose of dead bodies - which gives us the title). Gooding persuades an underage girl to seduce a wealthy landlord (because a sex tape will make her into an instant celebrity), and has Famke Janssen video the sexual encounter. Eventually the girl's step-father steals the video and blackmails the landlord for money. I guess they were trying to say something about modern "celebrity," but I didn't care enough about any of it to try to figure it out. A good cast wasted in a not very good movie, and another buck wasted.
$23) Once Upon a Time in Venice (2017) - Bruce Willis plays an ex-cop turned skate boarding private investigator who, after his dog is taken in a burglary, gets involved in a few cases while looking for the dog. Even though he had top billing on the Blu-ray case, I was expecting just a cameo role by Willis, but was pleasantly surprised to find that he really is the lead in this somewhat amusing action comedy. I wasn't bored, and I laughed a few times. Which is more than I can say for most modern comedies.
$24) Mandrill (2009) - A suave, high-priced hit man falls for the daughter of his latest assignment, a one-eyed man who may have killed the hit man's parents when he was a child. Moderately entertaining. I didn't hate it, but it could have been better.

$25) Bullet Head (2017) - Three crooks (Adrien Brody, John Malkovich, and Macaulay Culkin's brother) hide out in a warehouse following a burglary and run into a vicious dog, the winner of the previous night's dogfight held in the abandoned warehouse. Antonio Banderas shows up in a few scenes as the dog's owner.

$26) Josie (2018) - Dylan McDermott plays a lonely, introverted guy who lives in a motel in a small town. Then Sophie Turner shows up, and the story plods along for about 90 minutes and goes exactly where you expect it to go. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't exactly good either. I didn't hate it, but I'm scoring it as not worth a buck.
$27) Redeemer (2014) - A devout kung-fu hitman called the Redeemer turns off the freeway somewhere in Chile and ends up in a small beach town where he helps some locals fight some goons working for a goofball drug kingpin. Meanwhile, his archenemy, the Scorpion (another hitman), is on his trail. It was kind of like Mandrill (with the whole Latin kung-fu hitman thing), but with better fight choreography. A rather generic action flick, but still an okay time-waster if you're not expecting great cinema.

$28) Unlocked (2017) - Noomi Rapace plays a C.I.A. agent trying to stop a biological attack in London. Nothing special, but it wasn't terrible either.

$29) Distorted (2018) - A couple moves into a new apartment in a "smart building." Before long, the wife (Christina Ricci) starts to hear and see things, leading her to fear that someone is conducting mind control experiments on the building's residents. About halfway through the movie, John Cusack shows up as a hacker/conspiracy theorist who helps her investigate her theory. A so-so paranoid thriller. It could have been better, but it could have been a lot worse. Don't watch this movie if flashing images cause you to have seizures.
Distorted (2018) - Distorted - The Future of Filmmaking - Apparently this film was shot three ways: traditional single camera, using "a format called Barco Escape" that uses three cameras. and is meant to be projected onto a 170 degree curved screen (I've never heard of it, but it looks like Cinerama to me), and in virtual reality.
$30) Hai Phuong (Furie) (2019) - After a little Vietnamese girl is kidnapped by organ harvesters and taken to Saigon, her mother (a retired criminal and a martial artist) goes searching for her. Pretty good action flick.

$31) Criminal Activities (2015) - Following a funeral, four guys who knew each other in high school go in together on a bad investment, and end up owing money to a mobster (John Travolta) who offers them a chance to work their way out of debt by kidnapping the nephew of another crime boss. A decent low-budget crime flick directed by Jackie Earle Haley (who also plays one of Travolta's goons).

$32) The Infiltrator (2016) - Bryan Cranston plays a U.S. customs agent who goes undercover as a money launderer to bring down drug cartels and crooked international bankers. A pretty good movie based on a true story.
