These "October Horror Movie Challenge" threads are for the discussion of the films in the 31 FILM SUBSET list.
The plan is for everyone to watch this film on the October day in the thread title, and to start discussing it the morning of the following day.
You may start discussion early if you want, but the preferred plan is for this to be as much of a group exercise as possible, with all of us viewing it "together" and discussing after.
Of course, you are totally encouraged to participate in these threads even if you haven't watched the movie on the designated day.
Even if you haven't watched it in years, or are not participating in the Horror Challenge, please feel free to chime in.
Spoiler tags aren't always used in here, so if you have yet to see the film BEWARE OF POSSIBLE SPOILERS.

Dead End is a great premise hamstrung by odd humor and tone that is both it's greatest strength and biggest weakness. None of it makes any sense, from the entire family talking about how unfaithful both spouses are to the circle they're driving in. The characters are so inconsistent and unlikeable it's off putting at first but then ends up coming together in a cartoonish but still spooky way. Lin Shaye's odd behavior seeing dead friends and smearing pie somehow works because of this comedic tone, it's so over the top and could not have worked in a more serious film. Ray Wise is also great. Dead End is surprisingly effective for a movie that's basically 60+ minutes of driving down a dark road. The dark car driving off victims is a great image as is their inexplicably gorey demise. I especially liked the ending with the bittersweet 'be the best grandfather ever' note that immediately questions the explanation that this was all a split second fever dream of the accident.
Maybe I'm just too uptight but I'll never understand how some of the odd humor gets included in these films, the sort of stuff that nearly sinks the first part of Dead End with dick cheese jokes and random masturbation. Was that suppose to be thematic character development? Anyway, it's that sort of casual unrealistic dialog and style that ultimately makes the relatively simple premise of Dead End work.
I'm a fan and for all it's faults Dead End brilliantly sticks the right tone.

Love this film and agree that it’d be a lot better without the dick jokes. But then, I think that last part for every film.

I like this movie, but it has a few flaws. Basically, it's a 30-minute short story stretched into a 90-minute feature.
All the characters are annoying. Especially the teenage boy. Once he's gone, things get a little absurd. And the remaining characters become more tolerable.

I liked this movie well enough, even if it didn't always make sense. The teenager was pretty obnoxious, and I felt the woods masturbation scene was random and didn't need to be done, but I enjoyed the randomness of it all. Like someone said,it felt like a Twilight Zone episode stretched out to a feature-length film. But it could have been worse.

I like this one as well. It reminds me a a good twilight zone episode. I think the characters over the top characters and dialogue was a necessity since the plot can only support a 30 minute short.

Agreed with everyone that kid sucks. But did enjoy the acting of others. It's an interesting story that does get a bit dragged out. I think I remember watching bits and parts before. Def worth the watch at least once.

Marilyn Bronson? I was really into the first 40 minutes, as this is my family during the holidays. The humor seemed to hit me just right and gradually got more serious as the body count rose. Who hasn't been on the endless road to Marcot?
I didn't really know what was real, and what was imagined. Did anyone notice the note written by the dad being found by the cleanup crew?
This one does have the feel of being overly long, and I could imagine it being a short film that they wanted to expand on.

The first time that I saw Dead End, probably ten or so years ago, I didn't find it to be a pleasurable experience. I was especially freaked out by Lin Shaye's death scene.
This time around, I realized that it's a black comedy, and I enjoyed it SO much more. I thought that the mother's drawing for the daughter was especially funny.
