These "October Horror Movie Challenge" threads are for the discussion of the films in the 31 FILM SUBSET list.

The plan is for everyone to watch this film on the October day in the thread title, and to start discussing it the morning of the following day.
You may start discussion early if you want, but the preferred plan is for this to be as much of a group exercise as possible, with all of us viewing it "together" and discussing after.

Of course, you are totally encouraged to participate in these threads even if you haven't watched the movie on the designated day.
Even if you haven't watched it in years, or are not participating in the Horror Challenge, please feel free to chime in.

Spoiler tags aren't always used in here, so if you have yet to see the film BEWARE OF POSSIBLE SPOILERS.

Re: "Society" Reviews/Discussion - 2019 Horror Challenge

You cannot beat the gnarly special effects and abstract theme of Society; which is fortunate because the plot is lacking. Watching the Joe Bob Briggs Drive-in episode they are right to comment that Clarissa's mom is never explained and that in the ending they do just walk off which is anti-climatix. I like the attempt at class commentary but this brand of snob is somewhat not relevent to today's social climate so Society hasn't aged well. Overall it's a fun film worthy of cult status so long as you don't dwell too much on it. It's the kind of film you could watch the last half of and not miss a lot other than redundant build up.

Yeah, I have never been a fan of this one. When I saw the list of subsets and this was on it, I cringed. I hadn't watched in several years, but the passage of time wasn't any better. At least the first time I watched it, I was a little shocked. This time, I just wanted it to end. I do like Billy Warlock and wish he could have done some more stuff outside of this and Baywatch, but other than that, not much to keep me invested.

I'm sorry you didn't like Society, but, honestly, I love this flick. The story might be a bit thin, but the climactic "shunting" scene where the rich literally feed on the poor is worth the price of admission, IMO. The script ls uneven, and it is rich pickings for a remake by a better director. Just think what Guillermo del Toro could do with this, particularly in an era where economic inequality is higher than ever and the 1% use the government as their puppet to cut their taxes and shred the social safety net.

The judge character was great and carried the 'shunting' scene almost as much as the effects.

Anyone have any theories about Carissa's mom?

Anyone think the main actor sounds like Jason Marsden?

Still a strange movie after seeing it on cable many years ago.

The special effects are the star here. The film could benefit from a more likeable protagonist and better pacing, but in terms of mid-tier body horror, it's pretty satisfying.

Pretty sure last year’s Joe Bob showing was my first viewing of this. Fun, but seems like it had the potential to be a lot more. DaveyJoe is right that a more likable lead would have helped.

For me, Devin DeVasquez in her prime is the reason to watch.

Best description I've heard of this is Lovecraft by way of John Waters.

My first thought was Kevin Connolly.

I assumed that she is the victim is a shunting gone wrong where some pf her brain was absorbed by another creature.
