These "October Horror Movie Challenge" threads are for the discussion of the films in the 31 FILM SUBSET list.

The plan is for everyone to watch this film on the October day in the thread title, and to start discussing it the morning of the following day.
You may start discussion early if you want, but the preferred plan is for this to be as much of a group exercise as possible, with all of us viewing it "together" and discussing after.

Of course, you are totally encouraged to participate in these threads even if you haven't watched the movie on the designated day.
Even if you haven't watched it in years, or are not participating in the Horror Challenge, please feel free to chime in.

Spoiler tags aren't always used in here, so if you have yet to see the film BEWARE OF POSSIBLE SPOILERS.

I wish this was streaming. I’ve never seen it and keep forgetting to pick it up.

Re: "976-EVIL" Reviews/Discussion - 2019 Horror Challenge

976-EVIL is one of the most relentlessly bad movies on the subset this year and I don't think I was in the right state of mind to enjoy it for any 'so bad it's good' potential. All the players are shallow caricatures, it's got pacing issues, and the effects are never great. The end when there's a nice epic flood ripping open to the gates of hell effect with the sort of catastrophic mayhem we don't often see is 'too little too late' but cool.

Very little happens until much later in the film, there isn't much of a conflict for too long other than an obnoxiously over religious 'mom' and general bullying with none of the subtlety or humor to carry the 'slice of life' elements. The nerd hero character being both a hero and ultimately the biggest bully/villain is an odd setup because he's too over the top weak to empathize with early in the film then suddenly too mean spirited in vengeance not even recognizable as the same role. There's no middle ground where he especially enjoys his new found power, except for the brief dinner with Spike's girlfriend. I do think that the ambivalent Spike character is maybe the best part of the film, a rogue who is sympathetic to both the nerdy hero and the bullies straddling the different extremes in the film.

I rarely get annoyed by set design and effects but there much of the design is so over the top, fortunately or not, it's distracting from the rest of the film - like the cavernous school bathroom with graffiti everywhere, the world's longest couch, the giant mid-air pipeline connecting two house, or the pail grey movie theater blank except for a marquee. Nevermind the too large mittens the possessed Hoax wears that are suppose to show how totally demonic he is but just look silly.

"Once you've been to Hell everything else pails in comparison" - I can relate. I would have much rather picked up some babes and gone on a motorcycle trip (?).

OK... I'm going to go watch the sequel now - if I'm not back by this afternoon please send in the police.
Edit: I think I liked 976-Evil 2: The Astral Factor a bit better, it's cheesier with a more clear bad guy and much much better pacing featuring more of Spike from this first film. Also delivering on motorcycle road stunts. Neither are great films or ones I'd especially recommend.

I really enjoyed this one. I haven't seen it since the original release. But I had a blast watching it.

I love 80's flicks. And every frame of this film screams Late-80's. The style, the characters, the story. It's so ridiculously over the top and full of 80's cliches.

Why is there fog and neon mood lighting in the high school locker room?

I liked Stephen Geoffreys in Fright Night, and he did a good job here basically playing the same character. I looked him up to see if he did anything else. Turns out he ended up doing gay porn movies.

Re: "976-EVIL" Reviews/Discussion - 2019 Horror Challenge

Well, the 80's were a great decade for horror movies. There were so many, in fact, that I still find a ton that I've never seen despite trying to see everything I possibly can. I had never seen 976-EVIL before today, or if I did, I don't remember it. Evil Ed from Fright Night has a main role and I didn't realize this had Lezlie Deane from Freddy's Dead. She looks much cuter here. I'm not sure how I feel about this one. It's not really a good movie and I would never put it on a favorites list, but it had a certain charm about it. I'm glad I checked it off the watchlist, but I doubt I'll ever revisit. I'm debating even watching the sequel.

It's a shame what happened to Geoffreys's career. From what I understand, a drug problem led to his career downfall, but I felt the guy had promise. It's perplexing to me that he turned down Fright Night 2, but ended up doing this instead and later starred in gay porn, but maybe the drugs hadn't taken hold at that time.

Well, I'm glad to see from the comments above that I'm not alone at being unimpressed with this movie. I was a little worried that it might be another well-loved film that I just didn't "get." I had watched it before sometime in the last fifteen years, and probably at least once on cable before that, but while watching it this time, nothing seemed familiar (which I'd say is a pretty good sign of a not-so-good movie).

976 Evil is a film that gets less interesting with each watch for me. I don't think it holds up to repeat viewings.

Not my first time watching this one and still not a fan. Something always just feels a little bit off about this movie - and not in a good way - whether it be the over the top acting or poor effects. And talk about a premise that hasn't aged well. It's no wonder why Robert Englund doesn't have more directorial credits under his belt. It just goes to show you that just because you may know a lot about horror movies, even be a horror icon, that doesn't mean that you know how to make them.

I have to admit that I thought this was my theme movie. I've never seen it and I was looking forward to opening my Sony blu.

I kept on thinking this was a Band movie, as my mind tends to equate these 'synthesizer scores' to those Puppet Master movies. I kept on thinking this was a very young Ethan Hawke playing Spike, but then I thought he would have never been this hard up for a role.....

Perfect Strangers didn't utter 'cousin' as much as this movie did.

Re: "976-EVIL" Reviews/Discussion - 2019 Horror Challenge

I haven't seen this since it was first released in theaters. As I mentioned in the Nightmare 4 thread, I was huge Freddy fanatic around this time so I dragged my friends to the theater to see this on opening night.

All of my them hated it and kept ripping on Robert Englund and what a terrible job he did. I kept trying to defend him and the movie but I knew in my heart that it was crap. I only found out later about all of the production problems this film had so maybe ol' Freddy wasn't to blame after all.

Eventually I'll revisit it. Maybe this year.
