These "October Horror Movie Challenge" threads are for the discussion of the films in the 31 FILM SUBSET list.

The plan is for everyone to watch this film on the October day in the thread title, and to start discussing it the morning of the following day.
You may start discussion early if you want, but the preferred plan is for this to be as much of a group exercise as possible, with all of us viewing it "together" and discussing after.

Of course, you are totally encouraged to participate in these threads even if you haven't watched the movie on the designated day.
Even if you haven't watched it in years, or are not participating in the Horror Challenge, please feel free to chime in.

Spoiler tags aren't always used in here, so if you have yet to see the film BEWARE OF POSSIBLE SPOILERS.

Best explosion ever.

The Fury has an admirable structure; it's a film about psychic Robin Sanza that does not feature the character of Robin very much outside an introduction and the end. It's filled with oddball spy games against an agent with a 'dead arm' and probably has too much ambitious content that comes across as 'filler,' like Kirk Douglas eating breakfast dressed as an old man. It's a story told through the lens of psychic Gillian as she re-experiences the story of Robin and that sort of narrative device seems brilliant. Brian DePalma must not have had a lot of confidence in telekinesis as an effect to feel the need to interject random car chases and disguises into the plot. The deadpan delivery of these absurdities by actors with gravitas elevates the film beyond it's content. Good irony with the institutional manipulation of Gillian mixing homey environments and off putting 'men in black' never feeling too forceful with Gillian but showing the full scope of Gillian's manipulation slowly revealed to her directly through her exploration of Robin's story. Robin is a rich character, sometimes empathetic and other time menacing. The slow burn payoff at the end is great, but there's a lot of getting to it.

Yeah, I like the premise and a few of the scenes are very well done, but it meanders.

It was cool seeing the debut performances of Dennis Franz, Daryl Hannah and Laura Innes; and Jim Belushi is an extra.

I recognized Dennis Franz's voice before he was shown in the car.

Ha, me too.

To be honest, I'd forgotten how slow this one was when I proposed it. It's certainly a letdown for DePalma from Carrie, but still fun and with a terrific cast of actors. Nice to see Cassavetes bringing the gravitas. And loved the throwaway line about Charles During loving to dance, since he was quite a talented musical performer too.

I wonder if, in an alternate history, Amy Irving could have become a 'Scream Queen' in horror movies.

Great opening and then zzzzzfest for me. It couldn't hold my attention after an interesting opening.

Did anyone else feel like this might have influenced Scanners a bit? The marriage of espionage and weaponizing telekinesis certainly reminded me of the Cronenberg film while watching.

The run time is definitely a negative. I don't think there is enough here to justify 2 hours, but the film is loaded with star acting and seeing John Cassevettes explode is priceless.
