Re: "The Hills Run Red" Reviews/Discussion - 2019 Horror Challenge

Hills Run Red does not get the respect it deserves strangely without a blu-ray release it might be the best kept secret of studio horror films from the 2000s, which is ironicaly fitting for it's premise of a long lost horror film. Hills Run Red not only parodies the genre, it also delivers on gore and twists worth following beyond the satire. The premise captures the over the top legacy of video nasties that sound even more amazing by reputation than they ever where in real life.

HRR never shys away from heavy themes with the cheating girlfriend love triangle or the heroin addicted stripper adult daughter of William Concannon showcasing female characters that seem stronger and more well developed than average. It's sly and brilliant that Alexia Concannon immediately prostitutes herself at the male documentarian while his girlfriend cheats on him probably commenting more on 'scream queen' / 'last girl standing' tropes than is immediately obvious especially with the end twist. Alexia's turn from doped out breast blazing eye candy to wilderness guide is maybe too much of a hint that she is leading lambs to the slaughter in hindsight but HRR never seems predictable.

The style of HRR seems to develop as the film goes along from campy retro clips to self aware post-Scream 90s horror then finally ultra stylized green tinted torture porn, something I think tracks the trajectory of popular horror trends. Near the end the satire becomes less obvious trading in irony for shocks and unusual impractical twists.

Satire and well developed? Was it though? I think just sleaze and gore. 2/10

Re: "The Hills Run Red" Reviews/Discussion - 2019 Horror Challenge

This was a first-time view...

For me, this was two different movies in one...

The first movie is the group getting together and going out to search for a "lost movie". The second is the group getting captured after Alexa's "heel turn" and getting tortured.

I liked the first movie very much. The idea of searching for a lost film had promise. I didn't fully understand the Serina character and what we were supposed to feel about her, but the search and the camping out in the woods looking for a legend was a good setup and I was really into the movie at that point up until "the twist".

The second movie, I hated. I'm not a huge fan of the torture porn stuff unless it adds to the plot, which I don't feel this did. The absurdity of it all, motive-wise, was so beyond dumb that it took me right out of the movie to the point where I thought I was watching a cartoon. The ending of Tyler just going insane by watching the movie...yeah.

Had the last third of the movie been as good as the first two-thirds, I probably would've given this a 7/10. But, with the direction it went, I'd say 5/10 is about right. And 1 of those points is for Sophie Monk's topless scene.

This is probably the most Hard-R movie I've ever seen. I can't believe how much nudity, gore and rapey/incest stuff they got away with. And according to reports, they trimmed 10 minutes of footage before submitting to the ratings board. It's too bad an Unrated version was never released.

Sophie Monk has some awesome boobs. I'm not surprised she takes them out so frequently. If I was a chick and had boobs like that, I'd be topless all day long.

There's a mid-credits scene that sets up a possible sequel. I would have liked to see that.

There's one twist that I really love:

Spoiler:
The girlfriend is chained up and about to be ravaged by the mongoloid babymask psycho. She starts singing a lullaby to appeal to his child-like nature. He looks right in her face and whispers "Keep singing if it makes you feel better." Turns out he's not a feeble-minded moron. That's so brutal.

Yeah similar to James. I liked the premise and the first two/thirds was almost decent, though that idea was done much better in one of those MOH films. But torture porn, or even just gratuitous gore or sex, is just an excuse to cover poor filmmaking in my opinion. I know a lot of you like the over-the-top stuff, and that’s cool. But just not my cuppa most of the time.

I own the DVD as I believe I heard really good things about the film or the cover kind of drew me in. Def did not like it the first time around if I remember correctly. It wasn't too bad this time around. I remember kind of hoping to get a better view of this whole insane movie, but the cuts we saw just didn't flow or make sense. I think that was the biggest disappointment to me. This director talking about his movie and really, the movie is kind of trash.

I should have known that this was torture porn from the opening scene. Not a fan.

This is the fourth time I have watched HRR and my rating falls each time. The third act plot twists simply don't work for me.

Count me among the non-fans. This is the first film of this year's Challenge that I've actively hated.

I thought it blended the better aspects of the slick and polished post-Scream era slashers plus everything that makes the 80s slashers infamous (excessive gore, T&A, turn-off-your-brain fun), and the documentary film crew was a nice addition. I'll agree the third act was a bit disjointed and the torture porn scenes were a bit off-putting, but it wasn't necessarily out of place. Honestly, for a straight-to-video modern slasher it was a surprisingly fun time. I actually regret avoiding this for years due to the terrible cover art.

I should feel shame to admit that WAS the reason I bought the DVD...

Playing catch up on these theme night movies, and now I seem to be drawing a blank on what I'm talking about. I've taken too much time between watching and pouring out my brain.

The Hills Run Red, really seemed like a good idea for a movie, and I'm surprised I had never heard of it before. It was a very slick, nasty little movie. I remember thinking there were a good number of entirely predictable scenes. I believe the daughter even commented to that during the final torture of the director's friend.

Re: "The Hills Run Red" Reviews/Discussion - 2019 Horror Challenge

Slasher films are not my favorite genre. For a slasher movie to work, I want to like at least some of the victims and root for them, so Halloween and Last House on the Left are fine. The characters here were annoying from the start. I didn't buy the idea of some kid being obsessed with making a documentary about a horror film that came out decades before and was lost, apparently after only playing at a few drive-ins. I had no problem with his girlfriend sleeping with his best friend while her boyfriend chased the stripper daughter of the "filmmaker" that made the lost "classic", but lost respect for them when they decided to go along on his quest because of his "talent". I laughed when he filmed a few seconds of interview with a guy who had almost no knowledge of the subject, then turned off the camera just before the guy said something interesting. Basically, these people were the idiots that this sort of movie requires to do the stupid things that put them in jeopardy.

I would also like to see a greater degree of realism in the violence in these movies. If someone is tied to a chair using barbed wire, I would not expect to see her using her hands if she managed to wiggle free. Obviously the intent was to make the situation extreme, but if you choose to go to such an extreme, you should take the situation that you created seriously. If someone is shot in the chest, I would not expect her to pop up a minute later and subdue someone, apparently not bothered by the apparent fatal wound that she just received (the one problem that I had with Halloween).

A few of the twists were okay, and one or two were sort of clever, but on the whole the movie seemed like just about every other in the subgenre. I liked Sophie Monk, perhaps in part because she played the only character that required more than a one note performance.

I don't care what you all day, I still like The Hills Run Red and think it's ridiculous ending is both a gutsy twist and tongue in cheek.
