Re: "Zombi 2" Reviews/Discussion - 2019 Horror Challenge

The open with the zombie headshot is the kind of thing more films should start with - nicely gets right to more action. I really like the New York harbor scene with the abandoned boat it's atmospheric and looks natural.

Some of the gore here looks obviously fake - but still stomach turning because while it doesn't look like vomit or actual flesh it looks like they somehow found something more even vile to smear all over that woman.

The shamelessness of scripting a topless scuba diver is hilarious. No matter how stupid it sounds when I think about it the shark vs zombie scene never gets old.

Dr Menard is randomly drunk halfway into the movie just before any really even goes wrong in a way that should be obvious to him - worst doctor ever and he really loves to head shot zombies encases in sheets.

We need more voodoo zombies because world cinema already has too many random inexplicable zombies and it's a cool folksy twist to them. Zombi 2 does a decent job of nonsensically mixing spirituality and lore into the mix like the reference to conquistadors giving a better impression of scope across time and over the world.

There are some great one liners in here.

I enjoy this one more than any of the Romero films. This wasn't my first time seeing this, so I can't really give a fresh perspective, but it has so many memorable moments, like the zombie/shark battle, the eyeball scene (urgh), and other visuals that stick in your mind, I just can't help but love this one.

This was a mind-blowing movie when I saw it as a kid on VHS in the early days of home video (though I'm still not sure how I managed to get my parents to rent it for me). Most horror movies with awesome VHS covers came nowhere close to living up to expectations. This one exceeded them in spades!

I had heard great things about this film, but I think it's more due to the deaths than anything else. Most of the actors had no energy and were boring. It was hard to stay awake during the dialogue scenes. The makeup and kills, though, were excellent. Some of the more enjoyable I have scene. The movie had the kills, but had nothing to go with it sadly.

A lot of the Italian horror films of that time have that sort of low energy vibe for me too. I still enjoy them, but have to be in the mood.

Started this one on Shudder, but then remembered I had the BU set on this one, so pulled out the disc instead. Too tired for the special features disc, maybe later.

I think this is a good description of what makes a lot of eurohorror have a special kind of drab nightmare vibe - so much of the time the actors are poor, questionably dubbed even in native language, or plot/character takes a second seat to sleaze/frights to a point where it's style over substance. The acting is often a little off giving it a wonderful surreal vibe.

The shark scene is crazy!

Now I know where the dialogue at the end of Rigor Mortis' song "Sog" came from.
Spoiler:

Re: "Zombi 2" Reviews/Discussion - 2019 Horror Challenge

Since Iíve seen this plenty of times, I felt like giving the Italian Audio a listen on my BD of this. Though there werenít any big changes in dialogue, it sure was a trip to watch Zombie for the first time with no Nick Alexander in sight. So in a way, it was like seeing it again for the first time. Scroll to my comment through here: https://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-review...=#post12620611 if youíre wondering who that is.

And though the A/V on Blue Underground BDís is wonderful, there was a moment where I preferred the old beat-up, Grindhousey print on Anchor Bayís DVD. Itís when the zombies rise to life in the hospital area near the end. The brightness & contrast is so cranked up on the BD that the eerie feeling that I first had when watching this no longer appeared

I've had a love/hate relationship with this film since the first time that I saw it (in the theater, no less, in 1980). I felt a bit ripped-off then, and to some extent, I do every time that I watch it. I always find myself wanting it to be better than it actually is. And yet I keep buying it, and I keep watching it. The theme song is great!

Re: "Zombi 2" Reviews/Discussion - 2019 Horror Challenge

Like others have mentioned, there are a few scenes that really stand out for me (shark fight and eye scene especially). I also enjoy the last third of the movie when the zombies really start to make their appearance. The gore in the movie is great and also adds to the experience.

I don't revisit this as much as some of my favorite zombie movies, but it is always a fun watch and I think it's one of the better of the genre.

Re: "Zombi 2" Reviews/Discussion - 2019 Horror Challenge

One of my favorites. I've always looked at this more as a prequel as opposed to an unofficial sequel to Dawn. It could easily take place around the same timeline as Night, but leaves the original initial cause of it being satellite radiation vague and introduces the possibility it could be voodoo-related instead.

What always cracks me up is that it takes them so long to figure out to shoot them in the head. You'd think the good doctor (or assistant) would make this abundantly clear once they arrive on the island, or they'd make the connection themselves upon entering the barn/hospital after seeing the bodies wrapped in cloth with head wounds, but no.

Re: "Zombi 2" Reviews/Discussion - 2019 Horror Challenge

I have a weird relationship with this movie. As a kid of the '80s, I vividly remember seeing the VHS cover prominently displayed at rental places, but I was too young for my parents to let my watch it. When I finally watched it as an adult, I was really let down and was quite bored through most of it, a few scenes aside, but like most of Fulci's films, it has grown on me a lot the more I've watched it. I'm still not as bullish on this one as some, but I have developed an appreciation for it. It still bothers me, though, how many people in this film stand around and scream while the zombies slowly shuffle toward them. I know it's something that happens in so many horror films, but it just bothers me more in this one for whatever reason. Just run away! Scream while running at least!

I decided to listen to the audio commentary on the Blue Bunderground Blu-ray. Not a bad listen. There are some interesting facts, but I was hoping for more.

That and [REC]3 ugh sooo many times. Put your family members and loved ones out of misery as well as help yourself. So dumb.

Zombie is a classic of the genre and I agree with Chad that it resembles more of a prequel to Dawn of the Dead than a sequel. This is probably the best Horror film in Italian cinema IMO.

Re: "Zombi 2" Reviews/Discussion - 2019 Horror Challenge

I never really tire of watching this one, as I try to watch it every year. This year, I decided to watch with the Thrower/Jones Arrow commentary. I would be curious to hear opinions on the BU McCulloch commentary. I never really noticed, but there are 3 movie choices on the Arrow blu; Zombie, Zombie 2, & Zombie Flesh Eaters. The commentary was a fun listen and next year I may go with the screenwriter's commentary. I always get a laugh out of the doctor's wife being in hysterics most of her scenes. I get that she's fed up with her husbands priorities, but she's unhinged in most of her scenes.

I felt that the first quarter of the movie taking place in NY could have been a great followup movie to Matul, but I'm sure budget would have been a major deterring factor.
