"Theatrical Showing" Reviews/Discussion - 2019 Horror Challenge: Bonus Day

Theatrical Showing

It: Chapter 2| 3 From Hell
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark
Midsommar: Director's Cut
Depraved | Freaks
Zombieland: Double Tap
The Lighthouse | Polaroid | Extra Ordinary
Wrinkles the Clown | Girl on the Third Floor
The Addams Family | Doctor Sleep

Attending a theatrical showing allows you to obtain a bonus entry. If you missed a day, this means you can still check off the subset list as being complete.
The same goes for attending a live event such as a horror convention, haunted house, play, ghost tour, etc. You have one.

These "October Horror Movie Challenge" threads are for the discussion of the films in the 31 FILM SUBSET list.

The plan is for everyone to watch this film on the October day in the thread title, and to start discussing it the morning of the following day.
You may start discussion early if you want, but the preferred plan is for this to be as much of a group exercise as possible, with all of us viewing it "together" and discussing after.

Of course, you are totally encouraged to participate in these threads even if you haven't watched the movie on the designated day.
Even if you haven't watched it in years, or are not participating in the Horror Challenge, please feel free to chime in.

Spoiler tags aren't always used in here, so if you have yet to see the film BEWARE OF POSSIBLE SPOILERS.

Caught The Addams Family with the kids and thought it was really disposable. It might be especially suited to Addams Family but the message of 'the outsiders are sometimes the most normal or us all' is so cliche after already being tackled by similar toy franchise revivals like The Lego Movie or Ugly Dolls that it's starting to feel like an 'antiquated insert franchise here' formula. Addams Family rarely rises above being cute, it's ok family entertaining but not especially memorable. It came with trailers for trailblazing films like the Playmobile film or Jumanji remake part 2 so bracing myself for experiencing a whole world of creativity with the little ones.

Zombieland: Double Tap was fun; it could have been better but it was a decent enough zombie action comedy nowhere near as good as the first - fast paced and slickly produced but some of the comedy misfires especially with many of the new additions.

I was disappointed in The Lighthouse (acting was great); it seems too intentionally cryptic and what plot there was is slow going. I usually like like abstract films like this but it felt somewhat random with contradictions or occasional fantastic images that didn't go anywhere obvious. After watching it I looked up more about it online because I thought I had somehow missed part of it and did not appear to. Maybe future re-watches will change my mind.

Zombieland: Double Tap was indeed a lot of fun. Zoey Deutch and Rosario Dawson were pretty good additions to the cast. I had no idea Zoey was Lea Thompson's daughter until I read it in the movies forum, but I can definitely see it now. I thought the "clones" of Tallahassee and Columbus were pretty funny, but I'm glad they didn't overdo it.

Re: "Theatrical Showing" Reviews/Discussion - 2019 Horror Challenge: Bonus Day

I caught Shaun of the Dead last week with some friends at a local cinema with beer and food in the theater. I thought some would say lines aloud but it was pretty much laughter. Prior to the movie a friend said the one line he did not want to hear aloud was, "Sorry Shaun."

Definitely a hightlight for me with this year's challenge.

Countdown was mediocre at best. Was hoping to see a few more of these this year, but the month went by too fast.
