These "October Horror Movie Challenge" threads are for the discussion of the films in the 31 FILM SUBSET list.

The plan is for everyone to watch this film on the October day in the thread title, and to start discussing it the morning of the following day.
You may start discussion early if you want, but the preferred plan is for this to be as much of a group exercise as possible, with all of us viewing it "together" and discussing after.

Of course, you are totally encouraged to participate in these threads even if you haven't watched the movie on the designated day.
Even if you haven't watched it in years, or are not participating in the Horror Challenge, please feel free to chime in.

Spoiler tags aren't always used in here, so if you have yet to see the film BEWARE OF POSSIBLE SPOILERS.

I'd be curious about the development of God Told Me To. The opening scene is gripping and there is a cool oddball premise for the kills, which would seem to make a good hook, but then it gets really weird - did they start with the kills or with the weirdness? Maybe I've just lived in the 'bible belt' too long but God Told Me to is surprisingly blasphemous that I'm surprised it came to be. It's a great take on christ vs antichrist tropes and it's possible nothing will top the hermaphrodite Christ this month. There's a great New York vibe to the scenes too.

I also watched Special Effects and now The Stuff - Larry Cohen was definitely a director who made smarter movies with meta elements that pushed the envelop and commented more on social issues like religion in God Told Me To.

A classic from Larry Cohen. A gripping tale of an "other worldly" NY cop. Tony Lo Bianco was great in it.

This is either the 2nd or 3rd time I've seen this one. I feel that it's competently made, very original, and well-acted, but I just don't care for the story or for the movie at all. For some reason, the decade of the 70's just doesn't appeal to me in the way they filmed a lot of things back then. The hair, the clothes, the dialogue. Bleh. There are a few exceptions to that rule, but I just find my mind wandering a lot during this one and having to refocus on the movie itself to stay involved. It's a technically well-made movie, but it's not much fun to me.

Acting is well done. Some of the scenes are very interesting which I wish was expanded upon, especially the opening. Very interesting that they could do a full on close up on the vagina as well in the movie a few times. Def can't do that nowadays

Love Cohen, but he must have had daddy issues. So many of his films have themes related to children being abandoned or such.

It's a good flick and I did not expect the alien element. Always something deeper going on in Cohen films.

Probably because I had the toy but the landing gear for the Space:  1999 Eagle Transporter used for the alien spaceship stood out to me.

Re: "God Told Me To" Reviews/Discussion - 2019 Horror Challenge

I've seen this one a few times. I'm a fan but find it a bit uneven. It always strikes me as two movies, the first half being the investigation and then the second half goes off into sci-fi territory. I prefer the first half. Strangely, it always kind of catches me by surprise when that change happens. I decided to listen to the audio commentary this time around. It was a great listen and very recommended for those who might be interested.
