What is This Thing?

Since its inception in 2005 the goal of this challenge has been to watch 100 horror films in a month's time. Obviously that's not an attainable goal for everyone, so your personal goal is of your choosing. Whether it's achieved, surpassed or beyond your reach, the ultimate goal here is to enjoy yourself while conversing with fellow genre fans.
</td><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#98a8a8>
Creating a List.

As always, there will be a separate list thread posted roughly 2 weeks prior (possibly sooner!) to the October 1st start date. Be creative and personalize your list however you wish - give reviews, post pics, link to your blog or start one on your page, provide IMDB links with your titles, add YouTube videos, include running times, etc.

The forum software now allows for unlimited post length, although you're still welcome to post it in a weekly or biweekly format. Also be aware the image limit has been raised from 35 to 60. And it's not a bad idea to provide a link to the list in your signature for easier access.

The date for list completion is November 15.

The only mandatory rule here is NUMBER YOUR LISTS!
</td></tr><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#778899>

What Counts?

If you're uncertain of the title's genre classification the IMDB and AllMovie are the go-to sources for determining its potential horror movie status.
Need more confirmation? A third and fourth option exists and that is FlickChart (requires free sign up) and TMDB.
Of course, any site is prone to the occasional error and if you feel that's the case asking in the discussion thread is advised.
Just keep in mind that the #1 deciding factor regarding what counts is you and you alone.

Movies = 1 entry (despite running time)

TV shows count according to length as they're aired on TV (including commercials):

30 minute shows = ¼ an entry
1 hour shows = ½ an entry
90 minute shows = ¾ an entry
2 hour shows = 1 entry

Mini-Series = 1 entry for each day it aired

Commentaries count. (no restrictions)

Documentaries count.

A SLIGHTLY MORE COMPLICATED EXPLANATION:
Spoiler:

Concerning TV shows and shorts films:
<table border="25"><tr>
<td bgcolor=#B0B0B0>

Like the other challenges, you need four 30 minute shows for 1 entry and two hour-long shows for 1 entry. 30 minute shows typically run roughly 22 - 24 minutes without commercials and hour-long shows are roughly 43 - 45 minutes. If it's short films that are 10 minutes or less, once you hit around 23 minutes of watching them, you've reached one 30 minute show (¼ an entry). Any combination that gets you to 90 minutes can be used for 1 entry. And this is not an exact science, so if you're off by a little it's really no big deal.

When listing the TV shows try to keep them together in 1 entry.
(Example: 30 min show/30 min show/30 min show/30 min show)

For the sake of organization, it's advised that you keep a Temporary TV section at the bottom of your list until you get enough for an entry.

Why 90 minutes? To keep the continuity going with the other challenges.

Every facet of horror counts: Horror-comedies, Sci-Fi horror, wretchedly bad horror [INSERT CURRENT REMAKE HERE], kiddie horror, creature features, erotic / XXX horror, Masters of Horror, silents, made-for-TV movies, etc.

</td><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#7B7B7B>
The formats and how you watch them is strictly your call -- Blu-ray, DVD, Netflix Watch Instantly, HD DVD, at the theater, on television, public domain downloads (links provided below), VHS, Laserdisc, Video On Demand, Netflix disc-by-mail, UMD, MiniDV, CED, Amazon Instant Video, through your neighbor's window, Roku, Google Chromecast, Apple TV, a Boxee Box, Amazon Fire TV, Hulu, Youtube, Payperview, Betamax, via laptop, netbook, VCD, a smartphone, a tablet ...you name it. And yes, that even includes the pan & scan, edited-for-television movies that air on TBS with obnoxious on-screen graphics and commercial interruptions (NOT recommended!). Just make sure the film is viewed in it's entirety.
</td></tr><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#008080>
Row #6 - Proud to be unoccupied since 2010!
</td></tr><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#fdfdef>
You're welcome to include non-genre titles viewed during the month in your list, but please keep them separate from your qualifying entries and don't number them.
</td></tr><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#98a8a8>
Sometime in November there will be a results thread posted. If you wish to be included in the stats provided (aside from your number ranking), please include the following in your list:

- First time viewings. The thing is a commonly used symbol.
- Formats viewed. (BD, DVD, NWI, etc.)
- Your personal goal ...even if it happens to be the challenge's goal of 100.

Read the announcement that affects the aftermath of the challenge HERE.

</td></tr><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#778899>
Keep it civil. The intention here is to have fun, so please don't take this event started by a guy with just a little too much time on his hands that seriously.

Complete it and feel a sense of accomplishment. The Expanded Checklist is COMING SOON.

Use for titles that lie outside the horror genre and normally wouldn't qualify or for those questionable titles you're not 100% certain about. They can also be used to count titles that aren't intended to be included as a full entry (I.E. a leftover 30-minute TV episode or short film). You have 3 so use them wisely.

For every 100 movies watched, you earn 1 extra wild card.

Review it. Even if it's just a mini-review, a simple  / :thmbsdwn: or one word description.
Subscribe to this thread for the latest posts (Thread Tools → Subscribe to this Thread).

Create a list in advance of what you plan to watch utilizing a site such as:
iCheckMovies | Listal

If you're indecisive and can't decide what to watch next copy/paste your titles into the List Randomizer (via random.org).

If you're doing a checklist, putting it in a spoiler tag makes the list thread much easier to read.

Extend the conversation by joining our Facebook Page.
It's fairly non-intrusive - basically it lets you know about the upcoming giveaways, new threads posted, etc.

Also, be aware that very few subscribers are getting posts from the page due to Facebook being one greedy bastard.
If you hover your mouse over the "Liked" button and click 'Get Notifications' this should fix the problem.

Not currently in use. Maybe it will serve a purpose one day.

Yet another social media outlet where anything goes.

Yeah, also not being used. Possibly this too will serve a purpose someday.

Yes, I started another thread. It's all about the link pyramid retaining the shape of an actual pyramid. ;)

Just for the record all you have to do is tell me. I'll happily comply. :)

Finally finished my list on the thread. Can't say it wasn't my very best showing but it beat last year results (22 in '14). My goal was to have a better year. I felt I did by doubling it up (46 total). Though I was thinking of hitting 50 or more but sometimes life, work and other distractions can throw you of course.

Ok, so this year I wanted to do a first. The plan was to stay away from the classics and other horror goodies I seen before, going with a first time viewing this whole month. I did it with the exception of Christine. I had alot fun. Of course some were awful like Wake Wood &The Wicker Tree and just to name a few. How do we get thru them? What makes you guys not wanting to shut it off? I did about 3 times. 45 mins into Dude Bro Party Massacre III & 1 hour into The Vatican Tapes and I just couldn't. Upset cause you can't count them and wasted time instead of watching something else.

I have my own personal rule that if I start something, it has to be finished, despite how godawful terrible it is. In those cases the pause button is my friend, and I'll break it up into 15, 20-minute segments (sometimes watching entire films in-between) until suffering through the whole thing.

Well folks, that sums it up. I did have fun viewing new entries this month, posted a little bit more here and had a blast. Till next time, Halloween & Horror forever.

That's awesome.

I thought if you didn't include a sum of stats or prize-eligible info you were automatically left out of stats/prizes? I don't think the intention is to make people include additional info if they don't want to. I'll miss seeing your list in my scrolling.

That just excludes you from the '50 & Under', '100 & Under', and the optional lists categories ...if those apply to you. Even if you have an incomplete list there's still the 'everyone', '5 or more challenges' and '10 or more challenges' categories.

Nothing as far as the prizes are concerned.

It was just okay, actually. The few big things about it were the Carpenter-esque score (Which appeared in my vid) and a spooky performance by the lead werewolf. It takes a long time to get going and everything seems to end abruptly----which includes the memorable victim sequence. :)

I wished I had read through your list last night. Anyway wishing you the best on getting through the depression. Perhaps the worst it has ever hit me was back in May of 2013, which my watched list helped me remember because I only watched 6 movies that entire month.

I not really doing this challenge for prizes either, just mainly to attack my unwatched pile.

Thanks. My boxer is helping my mood. I'm ready to resume the Comedy Challenge too, and that should help.

I was thinking that you just used everyone's own list stats to make the results. I am now having a much deeper appreciation for what you do every year. Glad you're getting a bit of a break.

I always get that, "What's the point of living?" feeling once November 2nd hits. Well, maybe it's not quite that bad, but once the OHMC is over, it's like all of the adrenaline just stops pumping all at once, and my body reminds me how I treated it for the last 31 days. And of course the answer to the point of living is... The next Horror Challenge!

After much sleep I have completed my list. I lived the dream and broke the 100 mark (but barely completed the checklist).

Thanks again Chad for hosting these every year! And also the awesome sponsors!

The only real stinker I watched this year was Contamination.7. So I had some pretty good luck.

Nope. 14 posts regarding Back to the Future with only one or two people trying to find the horror in it and 16 rabid Teen Wolf posts. It went on a lot longer than Back 2 Da Future.

A bunch of those "rabid" posts were yours. And you're the one bringing it up again a month later.

Back to the Future Part II is on several lists in the list thread (it's numbered, and wildcarded, on at least two). The Amazing Spider-Man was on one list.

Haven't watched a single movie so far this month  Been catching up with other things I've been putting off, plus we've started filming our short drama and I'm too exhausted to do anything once I get home.

  9. Jennifer's Body (2009)
  10. Lèvres de sang (1975)

I didn't totally love anything or hate anything this month, but it wasn't too bad.

Biggest Surprises:
The Forgotten (1973) - expecting cheap, sleazy schlock, but it's quite a decent, albeit low-budget, film
Ha Phraeng (2009) - normally don't like anthologies, but mostly fairly strong segments
Cybernatural (2014) - thought this was going to be a crappy tweeny film and like The Den which was awful, but it had good tension and was well-paced, though the last few seconds should die

"Better on a second viewing":
Drag Me to Hell (2009) - I hated it when I first watched it, now I think it's ok. It's wildly uneven and has awful CGI, but it's quite tense in parts and amusing in others.
Rosemary's Baby (1967) - I thought it was ok the first time I watched it, now I really like it. Great build-up, dialogue and acting.
Murder Party (2007) - I really liked it on a first viewing, now I fecking love it. I think it's hilarious and clever, great characters and writing and camerawork.

Hottest Dudes (pretty lacking this year):
1. Tom Hiddleston in Crimson Peak
2. Andrew Prine in Simon, King of the Witches
3. Sandy Barnett in Murder Party
4. Jeff East in Stranger in Our House
5. AJ Bowen in Rites of Spring

I feel like this year a lot of the films I watched didn't really have very interesting visuals, your choices look really cool. Also, do you pick the music before or after? I struggle to find a soundtrack, so I usually just go through some of the 'best horror film soundtracks' until I find some songs that seem ok. Normal music that I listen to wouldn't be really fitting because I listen to like, Abba.

List is final.

Stats and awards in a day or so.

101 movies watched, checklist completed & theme night completed.

Also, if you only ever read one of my wife's reviews I advise you read her review of Samuel Adams Fat Jack beer. #30. It is my new favorite review of hers.

Now I kind of want to see a horror montage with Abba.

I'm picturing Leatherface running around to Dancing Queen now.

As a funny aside, the ending credit song on Cold Prey is a pretty fun one.

A bunch of those "rabid" posts were yours. And you're the one bringing it up again a month later.

Back to the Future Part II is on several lists in the list thread (it's numbered, and wildcarded, on at least two). The Amazing Spider-Man was on one list.

I just meant the discussion and not lists.

 Great review/comments!

Based on *this* part of yours:

...like someone dropped a shot of tequila in a good flavorful pumpkin beer.
I'm pretty sure I'd have a similar reaction as your wife! I can not stand tequila - at all. I once tried a Tequila Sunrise but there was this nasty whang (like someone's dirty socks). I ordered another to see where the nasty was coming from but left out the grenadine, nope... nasty taste still there. I then ordered a Screwdriver to see if the OJ was the culprit. Nope again, OJ was fine. That left only tequila - tried a sip. Yep... simply awful stuff - worse than whiskey (no, I do not like whiskey or any variants either). That's when I decided to just stick with Brandy, Cognac, Dark Rum, and Uzo as none of those have ever let me down and none need a "mixer" to make 'em taste good. :)

I finalized my list. One of these years, I will keep track of my daily time totals as I go instead of having to add it all up at the end.

I ended up with 116 entries, the checklist completed, and the theme nights completed, and had a lot of fun along the way. I am pretty happy with that considering I didn't have a single day off work the entire month.

And your analogy is still off. I went back and read the Spider-Man stuff in the old thread, and it was one poster who had seen the film in a theater who was saying (possibly jokingly, given that that poster is a well-known horror fanatic) the movie should "count" because the villain was a mad scientist who becomes a monster. With BttF, a few posters who had seen the films in theaters were also (again, probably jokingly) looking for ways to make the films "count."

The Teen Wolf discussion was just a poster mentioning the film as a werewolf movie and a couple of other posters saying it shouldn't count because it isn't listed as "horror" on any of the "official" movie sites. Then a few people posted that it should count, and the "anti-Teen Wolf" posters clarified their positions, saying they meant it shouldn't be a daily theme pick, but that it was okay with them if an individual poster put it on his or her list. The same position as this rabid "Team Teen Wolf" poster had:

Spoiler:
or just to get it out of the way, people that don't like to be doped up and raped
but that doesn't mean it's a horror film that should be someone's pick for a Haunted/Ghost subset night. At the same time, there's no reason someone shouldn't watch Teen Wolf on werewolf night. I just agree that something like that doesn't need to be a subset pick for werewolves.

I don't know what happened to make you change your mind, or why it still bothers you a month later.

What difference does it make if someone lists Teen Wolf (or Ghost Dad, or Casper, etc.)? It seems odd to me that some people are perfectly fine with people listing Halloween sitcom episodes, but whine about comedy monster movies.

What is it that makes Teen Wolf, or, for that matter, Ghostbusters (1984) (&quot;Comedy | Fantasy=&quot;=, "Genres - Comedy, Fantasy | Sub-Genres - Fantasy Comedy, Sci-Fi Comedy ", "Comedy • Fantasy • Fantasy Comedy • Ghost Film • Science Fiction • Sci-Fi Comedy • Supernatural Comedy", "Fantasy, Action, Comedy, Science Fiction, Family") and Ghostbusters II (1989) (&quot;Comedy | Fantasy=&quot;=, "Genres - Comedy, Fantasy | Sub-Genres - Fantasy Comedy, Action Comedy", "Action • Action Comedy • Comedy • Fantasy • Fantasy Comedy • Ghost Film • Supernatural Comedy", "Fantasy Action Comedy Science Fiction Family"), so different from My Mom's a Werewolf (1989), Full Moon High (1981), The Ghost Breakers (1940), My Best Friend Is a Vampire (1987), Once Bitten (1985), Love at First Bite (1979), Transylvania 6-5000 (1985), Ernest Scared Stupid (1991), or Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004) other than their genre classifications on movie sites?
