THE "RULES" | ||
Since its inception in 2005 the goal of this challenge has been to reach 100 horror films in a month's time. Obviously that's not an attainable goal for everyone, so your personal goal is of your choosing. Whether it's achieved, surpassed or beyond your reach, the ultimate goal here is to enjoy yourself while conversing with fellow genre fans.
As always, there will be a separate list thread posted roughly 2 weeks prior to the October 1st start date. Be creative and personalize your list however you wish - give reviews, post pics, link to your blog or start one on your page, provide IMDB links with your titles, add YouTube videos, include running times, etc. The forum software now allows for unlimited post length, although you're still welcome to post it in a weekly or biweekly format due to the beyond annoying 25(?!) image limit. It's also highly recommended that you provide a link to the list in your signature for easier access. The only mandatory rule here is NUMBER YOUR LISTS!
If you're uncertain of the title's genre classification the IMDB and AllRovi (formerly allmovie.com) are the go-to sources for determining its potential horror movie status. Need more confirmation? A third and fourth option exists and that is FlickChart (requires free sign up) and TMDB. Of course, any site is prone to the occasional error and if you feel that's the case asking in the discussion thread is advised. Just keep in mind that the #1 deciding factor regarding what counts is you and you alone.
Every facet of horror counts: Horror-comedies, Sci-Fi horror, wretchedly bad horror [Insert Current Remake Here], kiddie horror, creature features, erotic / XXX horror, Masters of Horror, silents, made-for-TV movies, etc.
The formats and how you watch them is strictly your call -- Blu-ray, DVD, Netflix Watch Instantly, HD DVD, at the theater, on television, public domain downloads (links provided below), VHS, Laserdisc, Video On Demand, Netflix disc-by-mail, UMD, MiniDV, CED, Amazon Instant Video, through your neighbor's window, Apple TV, a Boxee Box, Hulu, Youtube, Payperview, Betamax, via laptop, netbook, VCD, a smartphone, a tablet ...you name it. And yes, that even includes the pan & scan, edited-for-television movies that air on TBS with multiple pop-ups and commercial interruptions (NOT recommended!). Just make sure the film is viewed in it's entirety.
Someday something important will reside here.
You're welcome to include non-genre titles viewed during the month in your list, but please keep them separate from your qualifying entries and don't number them.
Sometime in November there will be a results thread posted. If you wish to be included in the stats provided (aside from your number ranking), please include the following in your list: - First time viewings. The ☼ thing is a commonly used symbol. - Formats viewed. (BD, DVD, NWI, etc.) - Your personal goal ...even if it happens to be the challenge's goal of 100.
Keep it civil. The intention here is to have fun, so please don't take this event started by a guy with just a little too much time on his hands that seriously. |

Was really disappointed by Noroi: The Curse, especially after the hype I'd heard elsewhere. There were a couple of cool moments, but overall I found it kind of boring.
I'm hoping to dive into some of the franchises next. I haven't seen anything with Freddy, Jason or Michael yet this year.

Hey Chad, couldn't you just put the link to the first post of the first part of this thread instead of copying the contents of said post?

When we left the last thread, NoirFan was pressuring me into spending even more money this month.
And I probably will, too.

And it forces people to check out the first page.
So imagine my surprise upon a viewing of The Beast. What I thought was a simple werewolf fairy tail turned out to have:
It's this strange combination of surreal Gothic arthouse and Euro-sleeze grindhouse comedy. Not that that even makes any sense.

17 or so years ago I was mesmerized by the stills from that film as I poured over the pages of a book I had bought on a whim, Immoral Tales. Those images just fascinated me. I eagerly searched for any evidence that the film actually existed, and upon further urging from my wife, I finally found Midnight Video (RIP to it's hey-day) and ordered their import VHS copy, in French, no subtitles. Yep, my wife and I watched 93 minutes without understanding a word that was spoken. But the imagery, just beautiful. I’ve bought every edition since.
Once you get over the shock of some of the film's content, you should make an effort to step back a bit and really appreiate the mastery of image and presence of nightmare that Borowczyk creates, capturing true inception of primal fear and lust, effecting the viewer just as much as the players.

So much time has passed since I last watched Magic Cop, that I forgot what a great movie it is. The current HK movies may be slicker, but movies from the Eighties and Nineties just have an energy they often lack. After Mr Vampire Lam Ching Ying may have been a one trick pony, but what a pony!

Doing a Gamera and Godzilla night tonight with Gamera Super Monster and Tokyo SOS, possibly more if I can stay awake for more movies.

The Beast Within (1982, on Netflix) rarely gets the respect it deserves.

Vote for best night in the Challenge?
Haribo is the best!
Just finished Chromeskull: Laid To Rest 2. I believe it was takingchase who hit it on the head, the film is rather stale. It's a shame because I loved the first film.
+Almost Human FX outdoes themselves in the sequel. Great gore here!
+Chromeskull is still a great Slasher Villain
-Brian Austin Green. Really?
-Plot is extremely boring

Would watching Children of the Corn (1984) and it's 2009 made-for-tv remake back to back be redundant or is there enough of a style/content difference to warrant proximity in a marathon?

...Next up is a werewolf double-feature: Dog Soldiers and Wolfen.

Just watched 'Doghouse' on Netflix. If you liked 'Shaun of the Dead' then you'll probably like this. Doesn't quite have the same comedy as 'Shaun', but has it's moments and the gore probably outweighs the comedy

Got to 25, The Cat (1992), a Wisely movie. Much better than the last Wisely movie I watched, THE WESLEY'S MYSTERIOUS FILE (2002) (what were they thinking). If I can keep us this pace I'll make my goal of at 50 by the end of the month.

I really had fun with Final Exam. Maybe it was the lack of gore and nudity, but there was a quaint charm about it. Joel S. Rice ("Radish") has the best line-delivery of any actor in the movie.
