The "Rules"

What is This Thing?

Since its inception in 2005 the goal of this challenge has been to watch 100 horror films in a month's time. Obviously that's not an attainable goal for everyone, so your personal goal is of your choosing. Whether it's achieved, surpassed or beyond your reach, the ultimate goal here is to enjoy yourself while conversing with fellow genre fans.
Creating a List.

As always, there will be a separate list thread posted roughly 2 weeks prior (possibly sooner!) to the October 1st start date. Be creative and personalize your list however you wish - give reviews, post pics, link to your blog or start one on your page, provide IMDB links with your titles, add YouTube videos, include running times, etc.

The forum software now allows for unlimited post length, although you're still welcome to post it in a weekly or biweekly format. Also be aware the image limit has been raised from 35 to 60. And it's not a bad idea to provide a link to the list in your signature for easier access.

The date for list completion is November 15.

The only mandatory rule here is NUMBER YOUR LISTS!

What Counts?

If you're uncertain of the title's genre classification the IMDB and AllMovie are the go-to sources for determining its potential horror movie status.
Need more confirmation? A third and fourth option exists and that is FlickChart (requires free sign up) and TMDB.
Of course, any site is prone to the occasional error and if you feel that's the case asking in the discussion thread is advised.
Just keep in mind that the #1 deciding factor regarding what counts is you and you alone.

Feature FilmsCounts as 1 entry
Short FilmsAdd them up to total 90 minutes to get 1 entry
Television ShowsAdd them up to 120 minutes (including commercials) to get 1 entry

Movies = 1 entry (despite running time)

TV shows count according to length as they're aired on TV (including commercials):

30 minute shows = ¼ an entry
1 hour shows = ½ an entry
90 minute shows = ¾ an entry
2 hour shows = 1 entry

Mini-Series = 1 entry for each day it aired

Commentaries count. (no restrictions)

Documentaries count.

A SLIGHTLY MORE COMPLICATED EXPLANATION:
Spoiler:

Concerning TV shows and shorts films:

Like the other challenges, you need four 30 minute shows for 1 entry and two hour-long shows for 1 entry. 30 minute shows typically run roughly 22 - 24 minutes without commercials and hour-long shows are roughly 43 - 45 minutes. If it's short films that are 10 minutes or less, once you hit around 23 minutes of watching them, you've reached one 30 minute show (¼ an entry). Any combination that gets you to 90 minutes can be used for 1 entry. And this is not an exact science, so if you're off by a little it's really no big deal.

When listing the TV shows try to keep them together in 1 entry.
(Example: 30 min show/30 min show/30 min show/30 min show)

For the sake of organization, it's advised that you keep a Temporary TV section at the bottom of your list until you get enough for an entry.

Why 90 minutes? To keep the continuity going with the other challenges.

Every facet of horror counts: Horror-comedies, Sci-Fi horror, wretchedly bad horror [INSERT CURRENT REMAKE HERE], kiddie horror, creature features, erotic / XXX horror, Masters of Horror, silents, made-for-TV movies, etc.

The formats and how you watch them is strictly your call -- Blu-ray, DVD, Netflix Watch Instantly, HD DVD, at the theater, on television, public domain downloads (links provided below), VHS, Laserdisc, Video On Demand, Netflix disc-by-mail, UMD, MiniDV, CED, Amazon Instant Video, through your neighbor's window, Roku, Google Chromecast, Apple TV, a Boxee Box, Amazon Fire TV, Hulu, Youtube, Payperview, Betamax, via laptop, netbook, VCD, a smartphone, a tablet ...you name it. And yes, that even includes the pan & scan, edited-for-television movies that air on TBS with obnoxious on-screen graphics and commercial interruptions (NOT recommended!). Just make sure the film is viewed in it's entirety.
Row #6 - Proud to be unoccupied since 2010!
You're welcome to include non-genre titles viewed during the month in your list, but please keep them separate from your qualifying entries and don't number them.
Sometime in November there will be a results thread posted. If you wish to be included in the stats provided (aside from your number ranking), please include the following in your list:

- First time viewings. The thing is a commonly used symbol.
- Formats viewed. (BD, DVD, NWI, etc.)
- Your personal goal ...even if it happens to be the challenge's goal of 100.

Read the announcement that affects the aftermath of the challenge HERE.

Keep it civil. The intention here is to have fun, so please don't take this event started by a guy with just a little too much time on his hands that seriously.

THE OPTIONAL STUFF
LISTS ARE ON PAGE 2 OF THIS THREAD & IN THE LIST THREAD

THEME NIGHTS
31 FILM SUBSET
THE CHECKLIST
3 WILD CARDS
This adds daily "themes" with accompanying links to horror sub-genres, studios, actors, directors and even a group marathon with the intention of watching said content on the designated day. This year's list is COMING SOON.
Watch these 31 films on the listed day, with group discussion starting the next morning or at your own leisure. Feel free to join the discussion regardless of whether or not you watch them.

Also, the threads from the 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 Subset Lists and even the short-lived HFC List can be used for individual discussion if desired. This year's list is COMING SOON
.
Complete it and feel a sense of accomplishment. The Expanded Checklist is COMING SOON.

***Please include within spoiler tags to keep the list thread from running a mile long.***
Use for titles that lie outside the horror genre and normally wouldn't qualify or for those questionable titles you're not 100% certain about. They can also be used to count titles that aren't intended to be included as a full entry (I.E. a leftover 30-minute TV episode or short film). You have 3 so use them wisely.

For every 100 movies watched, you earn 1 extra wild card.
NEW THREAD ALERT!
HELP BUILD THE OPTIONAL TABLES HERE.

HELPFUL TIPS & VARIOUS LINKS

LINKS UPDATED, BUT MORE IS COMING!

Provide a link to your list in your signature.
Review it. Even if it's just a mini-review, a simple / or one word description.
Subscribe to this thread for the latest posts (Thread Tools → Subscribe to this Thread).

Create a list in advance of what you plan to watch utilizing a site such as:
iCheckMovies | Listal
| Listology | ListPhile | FlickChart | Ranker.

If you're indecisive and can't decide what to watch next copy/paste your titles into the List Randomizer (via random.org).

If you're doing a checklist, putting it in a spoiler tag makes the list thread much easier to read.
Increase your coffee consumption.
Insomniac? Use your disadvantage to your advantage!
Work from home? Ditto.
Save the supplemental material for November!
Boredom setting in? Watch another movie!
Stay within your comfort level and try not to get too caught up in the numbers.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 11th Annual October Horror Movie Challenge (Oct 1-31) Pt

Carried over from thread #1 so it doesn't get overlooked...

Sunday Night Trivia Question: Banner Edition.

You know the drill. All you have to do is NAME 10 MOVIES USED IN THE BANNER. There's between 100 - 200 images used, so plenty to choose from.

Easy access for the lazy:

Spoiler:

Hints:
1. A few images aren't taken from film posters.
2. Some films have multiple images (usually no more than two per film).
3. Some images have been slightly altered.
4. Occasionally a foreign poster is used.
5. A few images are not from any film (IE actual photographs or artwork).
6. There's a few repeats from past banners.

Everyone that gets at least 10 correct answers will be entered into a drawing and Random.org will decide the outcome.

Submit your answers to me via PM or email (one entry per person).

Since this one requires a bit of work, you're playing for a little more than usual...

Anyone recommend Battle Of The Damned?

The trailer is somewhat intriguing...

I didn't get any viewings in last night, as the Alka Seltzer Cold I took knocked me out, but I started in early today when I woke up in the middle of the night with an episode of 100 Years of Horror on Man Made monsters.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 11th Annual October Horror Movie Challenge (Oct 1-31) Pt

Since we moved threads and I am curious to this answer, I'm posting it again:

So question about those that study and watch movies about real life killers. I used to be so into them and fascinated by movies about Jack the Ripper, Charles Manson, Zodiac Killer, etc. However, with all the recent gun killings and mass murders, I'm thinking people like these should NOT be having movies and basically "worshipped" and placed on screen. They did horrible and unforgivable things and yet we are still drawn to watch their work and "learn" more about them. Anyone else get disturbed by this lately or is it just me?

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 11th Annual October Horror Movie Challenge (Oct 1-31) Pt

I went to my fist Haunted House of the year last night which was enjoyable. but my viewing took a hit this week was able to fit in the themes and a couple titles extra.

woke up feeling like shit. called out of work and hoping to be able to lay in bed and watch movies all day. I actually question if this was any other time of the year would i have gone in?

however two things has taken me out of the mood
my first watch
Hellgate...which was just meh and Cary Elwes...is terrible in every horror movie I have seen him in.

and mmy girlfriend just woke up and now she looks like death so ill be taking care of her

Good lord! That is some kinda prize pack!!!

Dumb question on the trivia challenge: If there is an image that may be altered or is a general character or item, do you have to name the exact film it was taken from or just name the series?

Well, netflix gets me at least once in this fashion every year during the challenge...Stonehearst Asylum, while not a bad movie, was not a horror IMO.

I waver on this.... on the one hand it's both important to be aware of and hopefully learn from history; on the other hand: you're right. The glorification and near-hagiographical treatment in fiction, coupled with overly prurient TV coverage is surely part of the wider problem.

That said, IF such "real" cases are a problem, then logic might suggest there's something to the hysteria that says films/horror/videogames are disproportionately part of the culture of violence that creates these real situations. And I don't think I agree with that (wholesale).

I suppose it comes down to HOW things are treated - is it to teach valuable lessons, infrm anf warn? Is to document the mundaneity and help or is exploiting tragedy for callous reasons? If the intentions are good, then there's a case for ignoring that some people will miss the point - because those people will find something else if these films weren't there.

I certainly think there's a difference between Jack the Ripper fiction/speculation and exploitayion of more receny tragedies. Also, broadly, (and with many caveats, but given your chooce of words there..) "LEARN"ing should never be a bad thing, whatever the trickiness of the subject matter.*

*Case in point, which sort of dis/proves this point: Zombies of Mass Destruction's satire of racism, assumptions and lines like "real American" (vs. Someone whose parents were born elsewhere)..... the subtlety will likely be lost of everyone who needs to grapple with these issues. But it should still be obvious that trying is necessary...

For today's theme movie, I chose Cursed, which I had seen a few times before, having once bought a horror pack of DVD's when I was in the desert at a bazaar. I know longer have the DVD, as bootleg quality is notoriously bad, heh. But I digress, anyways, I've always enjoyed the movie. If anyone wants to see it, it is on Netflix.

Got through 30 films in the first 4 days and today I've watched... 1. Heh. And I had to sneak that one in now just before going to bed because I have to be up early for school tomorrow >.< I miss having no responsibilities. I watched Killer Condom for today's LGBT theme, but it was annoyingly boring. It's about a killer condom how can it fail

lol.
I watched Killer Condom a few years back for this challenge when I was trying to watch the most off the wall flicks. I think that one tied with Poultryguist and Death Bed: The Bed that Eats for all out Gonzo though Killer Condom at least seemed to try AND it had a message.

I think the idea that movies/books about real life killers constituting 'worship' or affirmative praise is invalid. Most of the celebrity killers seem to become oddly devoid of identity and morph into a sort of generic boogeyman, especially after whatever creative liberties the screen takes with any real life fact (usually they are not presented sympathetically); essentially people enjoy these movies in part because of what they say about general human nature and anyone's capability to become a 'villain' archetype. While I see your logic I'd argue that it makes no difference if we 'worship'/watch Freddy Krueger or Jeffrey Dahmer since they have both come to represent ghastly evils in similar form on the screen and it's the acts not the people that are most impactful. I don't think, for example, Jack the Ripper or even Charles Manson derive any personal satisfaction from embellishments of their life (and I suspect many true crime movies are so far removed from the source) because by the point they become infamous they have been stripped of most control/agency by death or imprisonment.

If you consider that the basis for horror (or story) is to tell tales that give real life lessons (like morality plays, now gone haywire) it makes sense to see movies/books/etc about true crime. Considering how impossible it would be to have a neutral and entertaining fact based examination I think most "based on a true story" films, regardless of if they name a specific criminal or not, are just marketing ploys for the same general shlock just with different branding (so any harm in watching these would not be specific to true crime horror); I think the real problem is if people mis-understand fiction\"non-fiction" and take it for literal fact but there's no known basis for exposure to crime facts making someone a criminal (certainly we don't know of any challenge participants going evil and knocking off people - yet).

Personally I prefer supernatural horror elements myself. The serial killer stuff seems too straight forward or played for shocks that it mostly seems dulls aside from stylish touches (which can sometimes make for epic movies, like with many giallos).

I was wondering the same thing (how tough the grading is going to be for these). I bet I'm looking at the same image as Spiderbite ... a super-small, super-general image specific to a horror franchise. This image is in pretty much every poster and video cover for all the movies in the franchise. So am I going to be marked wrong if I answer (an example, not the movie in question here) Frankenweenie, but it turned out that particular image came from the Croatian poster for Frankenweenie 7?

Here's another question related to the trivia: can we give more than 10 answers, and get credit for a "correct" answer as long as 10 of them are right? Or do we have to give only 10 answers, and they all have to be right?

Yeah, as I said in the last thread I don't consider it horror either. But it's listed as one in numerous places (imdb has horror as the first genre), so we can safely watch it and count it

If you're unsure what specific movie a poster came from you may want to consider typing the movie/franchise into an image search and see if you can find the source image.

http://www.wrongsideoftheart.com is a great reference.

The way I read it was 10 correct answers out of X submitted ("Everyone that gets at least 10 correct answers..."). I submitted 20 answers, hopefully 10 of which are correct (though I think I'll do better than that).

You definitely need to use a search engine, because there's some obscure stuff in that poster. This year I tried a new search technique that I think worked nicely, but might be a little advanced for some folk.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 11th Annual October Horror Movie Challenge (Oct 1-31) Pt

Lost my internet connection all day yesterday, so I wasn't really able to participate in the Wicker Man conversation. I watched it for the first time this weekend and to my surprise I enjoyed it. Didn't love it, but enjoyed it.

Also, watched The Burbs with my wife. I know it isn't categorized as horror, so I'll be using a wildcard, but it always feels right this time of year and I really enjoy some of the humor.

Yesterday, watched The Fog with my wife and I think I like it even more these days. Also watched a favorite of mine, Tremors. Still love the two main characters and love Burt Gummer. Going to watch the Attack Pack before I watch the new one that comes out tomorrow.

Saw some people talking about Burying the Ex and Odd Thomas. I watched Burying the Ex this morning mostly because I enjoyed Yelchin in Odd Thomas and enjoyed it a good bit. Will probably check out Life After Beth as a result. Are people considering Odd Thomas horror? I thought IMDB didn't list it as such, but it does feel as much like it fits as a lot of horror movies.

Errr..... The Gay Bed & Breakfast of Terror was either an occasionally-hilarious satire of bigotry and perceptions, or one of the most homophobic and offensive things I can recall. And I'm still not completely sure which....... Very, very odd.

And there are more than 10 that I'm 100% sure of. I was just curious (and certainly didn't want to blow a chance at winning the prize because of a rules misunderstanding).

The banner identification challenge always infuriates me (in a good way ). I just know I've seen most of the images before. Hell, I have a bunch of them on the covers in my own collection. But I just keep drawing blanks for most of them.

I think you are running close to a slipper slope of censorsism here.

I am not super into serial killer movies but do enjoy a them rarely from time to time. But I think the part about your statement that is the most disturbing is the between the lines "we should ban these movies" idea.

There will alway be people who try to blame crazies on things they don't like, look at that case in the UK where they tried to blame the reason for a murder on a family's renting of Child's Play 3 (of all fucking things).

Living in a revisionist history, censored, thought police society is way worse than Henry the serial killer biopics or dramatizations.

Cutting out an image and doing a google image search on it?

The checklist has an item of "With Two or More Horror Legends". What is that exactly? Is it two actors that have starred in a bunch of horror films? If so, how many films is the magic number to turn them into a legend?

Or is it 2 legends, like a movie where candy is poisoned or the decoration in someone's yard of someone hanging turns out to not be a decoration but a real person that committed suicide?
