The "Rules"

What is This Thing?

Since its inception in 2005 the goal of this challenge has been to reach 100 horror films in a month's time. Obviously that's not an attainable goal for everyone, so your personal goal is of your choosing. Whether it's achieved, surpassed or beyond your reach, the ultimate goal here is to enjoy yourself while conversing with fellow genre fans.
Creating a List.

As always, there will be a separate list thread posted roughly 2 weeks prior to the October 1st start date. Be creative and personalize your list however you wish - give reviews, post pics, link to your blog or start one on your page, provide IMDB links with your titles, add YouTube videos, include running times, etc.

The forum software now allows for unlimited post length, although you're still welcome to post it in a weekly or biweekly format. Also be aware the image limit has been raised from 25 to 35. And it's not a bad idea to provide a link to the list in your signature for easier access.

The only mandatory rule here is NUMBER YOUR LISTS!

What Counts?

If you're uncertain of the title's genre classification the IMDB and AllMovie (formerly "AllRovi") are the go-to sources for determining its potential horror movie status.
Need more confirmation? A third and fourth option exists and that is FlickChart (requires free sign up) and TMDB.
Of course, any site is prone to the occasional error and if you feel that's the case asking in the discussion thread is advised.
Just keep in mind that the #1 deciding factor regarding what counts is you and you alone.

Feature FilmsCounts as 1 entry
Short FilmsAdd them up to total 90 minutes to get 1 entry
Television ShowsAdd them up to 120 minutes (including commercials) to get 1 entry

Movies = 1 entry (despite running time)

TV shows count according to length as they're aired on TV (including commercials):

30 minute shows = ¼ an entry
1 hour shows = ½ an entry
90 minute shows = ¾ an entry
2 hour shows = 1 entry

Mini-Series = 1 entry for each day it aired

Commentaries count. (no restrictions)

Documentaries count.

A SLIGHTLY MORE COMPLICATED EXPLANATION:
Spoiler:

Concerning TV shows and shorts films:

Like the other challenges, you need four 30 minute shows for 1 entry and two hour-long shows for 1 entry. 30 minute shows typically run roughly 22 - 24 minutes without commercials and hour-long shows are roughly 43 - 45 minutes. If it's short films that are 10 minutes or less, once you hit around 23 minutes of watching them, you've reached one 30 minute show (¼ an entry). Any combination that gets you to 90 minutes can be used for 1 entry. And this is not an exact science, so if you're off by a little it's really no big deal.

When listing the TV shows try to keep them together in 1 entry.
(Example: 30 min show/30 min show/30 min show/30 min show)

For the sake of organization, it's advised that you keep a Temporary TV section at the bottom of your list until you get enough for an entry.

Why 90 minutes? To keep the continuity going with the other challenges.

Every facet of horror counts: Horror-comedies, Sci-Fi horror, wretchedly bad horror [INSERT CURRENT REMAKE HERE], kiddie horror, creature features, erotic / XXX horror, Masters of Horror, silents, made-for-TV movies, etc.

The formats and how you watch them is strictly your call -- Blu-ray, DVD, Netflix Watch Instantly, HD DVD, at the theater, on television, public domain downloads (links provided below), VHS, Laserdisc, Video On Demand, Netflix disc-by-mail, UMD, MiniDV, CED, Amazon Instant Video, through your neighbor's window, Roku, Google Chromecast, Apple TV, a Boxee Box, Hulu, Youtube, Payperview, Betamax, via laptop, netbook, VCD, a smartphone, a tablet ...you name it. And yes, that even includes the pan & scan, edited-for-television movies that air on TBS with obnoxious on-screen graphics and commercial interruptions (NOT recommended!). Just make sure the film is viewed in it's entirety.
Row #6 - Empty and Proud Since 2010!
You're welcome to include non-genre titles viewed during the month in your list, but please keep them separate from your qualifying entries and don't number them.
Sometime in November there will be a results thread posted. If you wish to be included in the stats provided (aside from your number ranking), please include the following in your list:

- First time viewings. The thing is a commonly used symbol.
- Formats viewed. (BD, DVD, NWI, etc.)
- Your personal goal ...even if it happens to be the challenge's goal of 100.

Keep it civil. The intention here is to have fun, so please don't take this event started by a guy with just a little too much time on his hands that seriously.

OPTIONAL
THE CHECKLIST
THEME NIGHTS
31 FILM SUBSET
3 WILD CARDS
Complete it and feel a sense of accomplishment. The Expanded Checklist is HERE.

***Please include within spoiler tags to keep the list thread from running a mile long.***
This adds daily "themes" with accompanying links to horror sub-genres, studios, actors, directors and even a group marathon with the intention of watching said content on the designated day. This year's list is HERE.
Watch these 31 films on the listed day, with group discussion starting the next morning or at your own leisure. Or don't watch them but still join the discussion.

Also, the threads from the 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 Subset Lists and even the old HFC List can be used for individual discussion if desired. This year's list is HERE.
Use for titles that lie outside the horror genre and normally wouldn't qualify or for those questionable titles you're not 100% certain about. They can also be used to count titles that aren't intended to be included as a full entry (I.E. a leftover 30-minute TV episode or short film). You have 3 so use them wisely.

For every 100 movies watched, you earn 1 extra wild card.
SEE POST 2 OR THE LIST THREAD FOR MORE DETAILS.

HELPFUL TIPS & VARIOUS LINKS

Provide a link to your list in your signature.
Review it. Even if it's just a mini-review, a simple thumbs up / thumbs down or one word description.
Subscribe to this thread for the latest updates (Thread Tools, Subscribe to this Thread).

Create a list in advance of what you plan to watch utilizing a site such as:
iCheckMovies | Listal
| Listology | ListPhile | FlickChart | Ranker.

If you're indecisive and can't decide what to watch next copy/paste your titles into the List Randomizer (via random.org).

If you're doing a checklist, putting it in a spoiler tag makes the list thread much easier to read.
Increase your coffee consumption.
Insomniac? Use your disadvantage to your advantage!
Work from home? Ditto.
Save the supplemental material for November!
Boredom setting in? Watch another movie!
Stay within your comfort level and try not to get too caught up in the numbers.
ENJOY YOURSELF!

Xbox users -- Have a Netflix Party:

Spoiler:
Are you a Netflix subscriber with an Xbox gold membership? Wanna have a NETFLIX PARTY?
If so, post your gamertag or send it via PM to The Man with the Golden Doujinshi.

SEND A FRIEND REQUEST TO DVDTalkHorror to join the parties.

Feel free to host a party whenever you want.
If you're watching something check the DVDTalkHorror friend's list and invite people!

Just go to Friends ---> DVDTalkHorror ---> Personal Profile ---> View Friends.
And then you can just invite whoever is online on that list into a party.
Recently, Microsoft updated the Netflix player on the 360. Among the changes is the addition called 'Netflix Parties'. Basically someone is a host and invites people to watch a movie together. Everyone watches it at the same time, and we can communicate w/ voice during the movie.

You need an Xbox 360, a gold account, and a Netflix subscription. There's only one catch: For right now, Starz Play and Disney movies are not allowed to be used for parties.

We can use this thread to pick out movies and times to watch them. We can try to vary things up.

While we can watch classics or stuff we've all seen, I think it would be interesting to check out stuff that the entire group may not have watched. We could even take a gamble and watch god knows what. I think even some riffing on intentionally bad movies could be good for a laugh if done sparingly.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 9th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

One final last-minute reminder that the trivia question ends tonight. I'll be announcing the winner tomorrow.

Spoiler:

The Trivia Question.

This one's gonna be a variation on what we've done in the past only much easier. All you have to do is NAME 7 MOVIES USED IN THE BANNER. And this is out of roughly 64 images.

For the lazy:

Spoiler:

Hints:
1. A few images aren't taken from film posters.
2. Some films have multiple images (no more than two per film).
3. Occasionally a foreign poster is used.
4. Some images have been slightly altered.
5. There's an image taken from a film not considered horror.
6. At least 3 images are not from any movie.

Everyone that gets at least 7 correct answers will be entered into a drawing and Random.org will decide the outcome.

Submit your answers to me via PM or email (one entry per person).

You're playing for Prize Pack #1:

- Psycho II (Scream Factory Blu-ray w/ slipcover)
- Die Screaming, Marianne (Redemption Blu-ray)
- The Killer Must Kill Again (Mondo Macabre DVD)
- Pure Terror 50 Movie Collection (DVD)
- Hands of the Ripper (Synapse DVD)
- Twins of Evil (Synapse DVD)
- Frankenhooker (Synapse DVD)
- The Driller Killer (Cult Epics DVD)
- A Virgin Among the Living Dead (Wizard Video VHS Collection)
- Tentacles (Midnite Movies VHS)
- The Mammoth Book of Slasher Movies
- Love at First Bite (CD)

Courtesy of...

Contest is open for 1 week.

Good luck.

Also, I've responded to the PMs from those awaiting a reply. Sorry for the delay.

Wait. Does that mean you were supposed to send a confirmation that you received our entry or were these responses to unrelated questions/communications or something along those lines?

Cool. Just wanted to be sure I didn't need to send my message over again. I wasn't expecting a confirmation.

Watched my first stinker of the challenge: Hatchet 2. Bad acting (Danielle excepted), bad dialogue and - worst - bad effects*. It wavered between being funny and straight-forward horror, and was just a mess. Shitty movie.

Spoiler:
* The electric sander kill was pretty good.

Eh, I don't think Danielle was excepted in that. I really just liked Tony Todd in this one. The whole series kind of had bad effects, which does make it funny and somewhat enjoyable. Nice nod to the slasher genre.

I really need to start smoking when watching Full Moon pictures. It has to make these things more enjoyable, right?

And let's please keep any Walking Dead talk to the TV section so those of us on the West Coast can still come on this board and hang out until we get it shown here

I was all ready to list Gravity until I saw it last night. I figured the scary situation would be enough but I agree with the others that said it really shouldn't be included on a horror film list even though it was intense as hell.

Watched an interesting Se7en/Saw mash-up streaming on Netflix called Die. It's not great but it is terrible either. Some here may like it.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 9th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

I found that over the last couple years I've been watching 'Dead Set' (2008) every October because of this challenge.

I absolutely love the series and I've never gotten tired of re-visiting it.

Dolls (1987) really surprised me; I was set for a questionable early Stuart Gordon / Full Moon dud but it was really atmospheric and well paces with some gruesome tidbits.

I just watched it for the first time the other day and thought it was good as well. Another winner from Gordon

Just finished The Stepfather. I didn't see what all of the fuss about this movie was. It seemed to have a cult following of some sort I guess, but I didn't see it that way. Wasn't real impressed with it. I had been waiting for a few years to get this on DVD. I really wanted the bluray but the price wouldn't drop low enough for me to buy it. So I gave in and bought the DVD instead a few weeks ago. It was ok, but wasn't real impressed.

I haven't dug into my Vincent Price movies yet. I've been waiting on the new bluray box set due out next week. I hope that I get it in time for the challenge. This is the latest that I have not watched a Price movie for the challenge and i'm getting impatient waiting for this set. I might have to dig into a few of his movies that aren't in the set very soon.

Saw Child's Play for the first time. Yes, that's right. I didn't expect that doll to be so big! I really liked the old school effects. Very well done!

did a double feature today of 'It's Alive II and III' - 'II' was weird, made no logical sense, disjointed and had one of the most glaring plot holes of any movie I've ever seen - I should watch the scene in question with the director's commentary track and see how and why he kept that scene in, as it's a total 'wtf?' moment (he just might blame the editor ). Why this movie is rated R is beyond me - this movie nowadays would barely get a PG-13. For a film where the action starts to kick in at the 54 minute mark, that's not a good thing. Two kid actors who's acting (and line delivery) is simply atrocious has two of the funniest lines - that had me howling with laughter.

III was a hoot - Michael Moriarty is Michael Moriarty at his best, he's as kooky and as odd as Christopher Walken. The plot is better, the gore is better (and earns it's R-rating) and it's just flat out entertaining as II was not.

Wow, Curse of Chucky really exceeded my expectations. Nice to see them dump the laugh-a-thon and return to its horror roots. And nice tie-in to the original, although can't quite say they pulled off making Brad Dourif look like he did 25 years ago. I think I counted no less than four(!) different endings (stick around until after the credits), and they were all extremely satisfying.

Tonight's agenda: Basket Case 2 and Ilsa, The Wicked Warden.

Decided to turn off the baseball game early to watch some horror. Started with an episode of A Haunting on Destination America

Just finished watching Shakma, and from the word go I was glued to the set. I have a strange feeling that I've seen it before but then nothing about the film strikes me as being familiar. The one thing I wanna know is did everyone have microphones in their shoes? Everyones footsteps seemed unusually loud. Over all I found it to be pretty good. Yes I know I was late for the challenge which is ok. Had fun watching the film and that's what this is all about

Check out the discussion thread, by all accounts it's more entertaining than the movie:

Curse of Chucky was a nice surprise and I loved those endings too. Overall there were some great fan nods... hopefully we see more from the Child's Play series (if Seed of Chucky warranted follow-up then surely they'll continue from here). The slightly re-designed Chucky was effective too (larger head, flattened forehead). Curse of Chucky was horror "done right" slathered in dimly lit atmosphere and tension with a touch of black comedy.

I thought I'd re-watch Seed of Chucky for completion of the series and to give it another shot but now I'm thinking about just dropping out of the challenge in shame and disgrace, it really is as bad as it's reputation.

The Last Exorcism Part 2 wasn't great, but still managed to be so much better than I was expecting it to be. Going in with low expectations paid off for me.

I don't know if I hated 'Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever'.

I did love how much of it was in poor/bad taste and I laughed during most of it's run time for that simple fact. Too bad we'll never see the original cut that Ti West completed.

What was the plot hole in It's Alive II? I haven't seen the film in years and remember being really disappointed with it when I first saw it. I agree that part III was a lot of fun and extremely entertaining.

Someday, I'll have to revisit the series, and maybe see if I can find anything to like in part II, especially those line deliveries you mentioned.
