The "Rules"

What is This Thing?

Since its inception in 2005 the goal of this challenge has been to reach 100 horror films in a month's time. Obviously that's not an attainable goal for everyone, so your personal goal is of your choosing. Whether it's achieved, surpassed or beyond your reach, the ultimate goal here is to enjoy yourself while conversing with fellow genre fans.
Creating a List.

As always, there will be a separate list thread posted roughly 2 weeks prior to the October 1st start date. Be creative and personalize your list however you wish - give reviews, post pics, link to your blog or start one on your page, provide IMDB links with your titles, add YouTube videos, include running times, etc.

The forum software now allows for unlimited post length, although you're still welcome to post it in a weekly or biweekly format. Also be aware the image limit has been raised from 25 to 35 since the last challenge. And it's not a bad idea to provide a link to the list in your signature for easier access.

The only mandatory rule here is NUMBER YOUR LISTS!

What Counts?

If you're uncertain of the title's genre classification the IMDB and AllRovi (formerly allmovie.com) are the go-to sources for determining its potential horror movie status.
Need more confirmation? A third and fourth option exists and that is FlickChart (requires free sign up) and TMDB.
Of course, any site is prone to the occasional error and if you feel that's the case asking in the discussion thread is advised.
Just keep in mind that the #1 deciding factor regarding what counts is you and you alone.

Feature FilmsCounts as 1 entry
Short FilmsAdd them up to total 90 minutes to get 1 entry
Television ShowsAdd them up to 120 minutes (including commercials) to get 1 entry

Movies = 1 entry (despite running time)

TV shows count according to length as they're aired on TV (including commercials):

30 minute shows = ¼ an entry
1 hour shows = ½ an entry
90 minute shows = ¾ an entry
2 hour shows = 1 entry

Mini-Series = 1 entry for each day it aired

Commentaries count. (no restrictions)

Documentaries count.

A SLIGHTLY MORE COMPLICATED EXPLANATION:
Spoiler:

Concerning TV shows and shorts films:

Like the other challenges, you need four 30 minute shows for 1 entry and two hour-long shows for 1 entry. 30 minute shows typically run roughly 22 - 24 minutes without commercials and hour-long shows are roughly 43 - 45 minutes. If it's short films that are 10 minutes or less, once you hit around 23 minutes of watching them, you've reached one 30 minute show (¼ an entry). Any combination that gets you to 90 minutes can be used for 1 entry. And this is not an exact science, so if you're off by a little it's really no big deal.

When listing the TV shows try to keep them together in 1 entry.
Example: 30 min show/30 min show/30 min show/30 min show

For the sake of organization, it's advised that you keep a Temporary TV section at the bottom of your list until you get enough for an entry.

Why 90 minutes? To keep the continuity going with the other challenges.

Every facet of horror counts: Horror-comedies, Sci-Fi horror, wretchedly bad horror [INSERT CURRENT REMAKE HERE], kiddie horror, creature features, erotic / XXX horror, Masters of Horror, silents, made-for-TV movies, etc.

The formats and how you watch them is strictly your call -- Blu-ray, DVD, Netflix Watch Instantly, HD DVD, at the theater, on television, public domain downloads (links provided below), VHS, Laserdisc, Video On Demand, Netflix disc-by-mail, UMD, MiniDV, CED, Amazon Instant Video, through your neighbor's window, Roku, Nexus Q, Apple TV, a Boxee Box, Hulu, Youtube, Payperview, Betamax, via laptop, netbook, VCD, a smartphone, a tablet ...you name it. And yes, that even includes the pan & scan, edited-for-television movies that air on TBS with multiple pop-ups and commercial interruptions (NOT recommended!). Just make sure the film is viewed in it's entirety.
This row has remained empty since 2010!
You're welcome to include non-genre titles viewed during the month in your list, but please keep them separate from your qualifying entries and don't number them.
Sometime in November there will be a results thread posted. If you wish to be included in the stats provided (aside from your number ranking), please include the following in your list:

- First time viewings. The thing is a commonly used symbol.
- Formats viewed. (BD, DVD, NWI, etc.)
- Your personal goal ...even if it happens to be the challenge's goal of 100.

Keep it civil. The intention here is to have fun, so please don't take this event started by a guy with just a little too much time on his hands that seriously.

OPTIONAL
THE CHECKLIST
THEME NIGHTS
31 FILM SUBSET
3 WILD CARDS
Complete it and feel a sense of accomplishment. The Expanded Checklist is COMING SOON.

***Please include within spoiler tags to keep the list thread from running a mile long.***
This adds daily "themes" with accompanying links to horror sub-genres, studios, actors, directors and even a group marathon with the intention of watching said content on the designated day. This year's list is COMING SOON.
Watch these 31 films on the listed day, with group discussion starting the next morning or at your own leisure. Or don't watch them but still join the discussion.

Also, the threads from the 2009 Subset List, 2010 Subset List, 2011 Subset List and even the old HFC List can be used for individual discussion if desired. This year's list is COMING SOON.
Use for titles that lie outside the horror genre and normally wouldn't qualify or for those questionable titles you're not 100% certain about. They can also be used to count titles that aren't intended to be included as a full entry (I.E. a leftover 30-minute TV episode or short film). You have 3 so use them wisely.

NEW THIS YEAR: For every 100 movies watched, you earn 1 extra wild card.
SEE POST 2 OR THE LIST THREAD FOR MORE DETAILS.

Xbox users -- Have a Netflix Party:

Spoiler:
Are you a Netflix subscriber with an Xbox gold membership? Wanna have a NETFLIX PARTY?
If so, post your gamertag or send it via PM to Mister Peepers.

SEND A FRIEND REQUEST TO DVDTalkHorror to join the parties.

Feel free to host a party whenever you want.
If you're watching something check the DVDTalkHorror friend's list and invite people!

Just go to Friends ---> DVDTalkHorror ---> Personal Profile ---> View Friends.
And then you can just invite whoever is online on that list into a party.
Recently, Microsoft updated the Netflix player on the 360. Among the changes is the addition called 'Netflix Parties'. Basically someone is a host and invites people to watch a movie together. Everyone watches it at the same time, and we can communicate w/ voice during the movie.

You need an Xbox 360, a gold account, and a Netflix subscription. There's only one catch: For right now, Starz Play and Disney movies are not allowed to be used for parties.

We can use this thread to pick out movies and times to watch them. We can try to vary things up.

While we can watch classics or stuff we've all seen, I think it would be interesting to check out stuff that the entire group may not have watched. We could even take a gamble and watch god knows what. I think even some riffing on intentionally bad movies could be good for a laugh if done sparingly.

I think we just broke a record. Last we hit a total of 4 threads and this year we're already there at the halfway point. The link pyramid is gonna look pretty funny next year.

I am surprised by how many nazi horror movies there were. The Keep is such an imperfect film with a fun Tangerine Dream soundtrack, cool monster, and often disjointed vague storytelling. In a Glass Cage was pretentious but at times ballsy and haunting.

There are also a ton of apartment themed horror movies. Why did Tobe Hooper remake Toolbox Murders?

In addition to having the ugliest woman I've ever seen in a porno and a soundtrack that sounded suspiciously like a dime store 'spooky noises' Halloween cassette, it had legendary character actor George "Buck" Flower in it!

Yeah, I see some potential and I actually semi enjoyed Cabin Fever 2 even though he disowned that movie. The Innkeepers was interesting, but I was hoping for more out of it, especially for how long it was. What threw me off the most, and I blame the budget, is just the way the dead look like. Was just too cheap for my taste in this era. I do like Sara Paxton, though.

Jennifer Lynch's Chained may be my favorite of 82 films watched so far. It's pretty disturbing but the lead performances are chilling. Psychological, intense, fantastic. Recent films have been impressing me this year. I'm also a huge fan of Excision, which I watched the previous night. Twisted stuff. And the spanish film Sleep Tight is also near the top of my list.

Enjoyed Crawlspace earlier. It struck me as cool that it's one film that could have been used successfully for three consecutive theme nights. Mad Doctor - Nazi - Apartment Horror. It probably works best for the latter if you're looking for something else for Oct. 17's theme. I'm going to start with The Landlady starring Talia Shire, momentarily.

I been hearing good things about this movie going to have to pick it up. Lynch made a snake goddess movie a yr or two ago and remember liking some elements interested how this outting turned out.

That's paired with The Horny Devils on an SWV DVD-R, right? I keep putting off watching those, thinking I'll save them for the Drive-In Challenge, then in April, I always think maybe they'd be better in Oct.

Is Buck Flower in it much? I was surprised he had such a prominent role (for him) in Waxwork II.

Yeah, it really is. My friend just laughs at me as I continue to buy. Lucky for me, I don't have Netflix so I've been able to watch my movies. Sadly, I'm watching movies I have already seen for the most part.

I would have been losing weight, but I got a nasty cold and it's ruined me. I can't wait until it's over so I can go back to the gym. Feel like I'm losing all my strength and gaining that bad weight.

Took a 5 day break from the Challenge.

Watched Frankenweenie (2012) tonight with one of my close friends.

\Not perfect, but visually gorgeous and the most fun I've had watching a Tim Burton film since Big Fish (2003).

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 8th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

Tonight I watched The Plumber. An Australian tv movie from 1978 by Peter Weir. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm the only one in the challenge with the film on their list, since it seems pretty obscure. Also I have never heard of it until I ran into the vhs a few months ago at Half Price Books for $1. It was on the Media label and in mint condition.

It's a psychological and dark comedy flick about an obnoxious plumber that weasels his way into an academics life and once there, he never leaves. You never find out much about him, and whether what he says is true or not, which keeps you wondering. And it's basically a battle of wills and class warfare from what I can tell. Though I must say, even I would become irritated and even frightened by the plumber since he destroys the woman's bathroom, and doesn't seem to realize how pushy he is, or maybe he does and he loves messing with people? Either way, he'd be annoying to be stuck with for weeks on end apparently not doing his job. But his musical outburst was memorable and came out of nowhere and is a well done sequence.

So no gore, no violence, all psychological tension battle of wills, but a unique film, and I wouldn't be surprised if The Cable Guy with Jim Carey was inspired by this film. Though the film Pacific Heights is also a good reference to what the plot of the film is like in terms of an outsider working his way into a couples life and turning it upside down, only on a smaller level in this case.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 8th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

I'm going to have to pull out of the horror challenge. I found out recently that my Mom has cancer and she is going to be having surgery this week. I really didn't want to pull out of the challenge since I had looked forward to doing it and bought several DVDs and Blu-Rays for it, but as much as I like DVDs and Blu-Rays my family takes priority over them. If you're the praying kind please say a prayer for her.

The last movie that I watched for the challenge was The Innkeepers. I didn't think it was a bad movie, but I didn't feel it was as good as HOTD and Ti West's segment in V/H/S. I can defend HOTD's "slow burn" but Innkeepers didn't seem to pay off with the build up. Like I've seen others say before Sara Paxton was very good in this and I really laughed when she came running downstairs after "the sheet" scene. I will admit that "the sheet" scene really did scare me a bit.

Hopefully next year I'll be able to take part in the horror challenge longer and things will be going well with the family. Good luck to everyone involved and have a good time!

The Plumber is a surprisingly good film. I have low expectations for Australian films, so even if they're just decent, I'm shocked But yeah, The Plumber was very intense and awesome.

Anyway, I just watched Lo which was really bizarre. In a good way.

I'll def say a prayer for your mom and family. Hope she can beat it!

As for The Innkeepers I agree. Very slow build and the payoff just wasn't as rewarding as I thought it would be. I do like Paxton, but maybe with a bigger budget, things could have been better.

I've been doing the same thing, except I started it last month. I have massive stacks of new horror discs that I've picked up that I have no shot at getting to. Oh well, there's always next year.

Why doesn't Toolbox Murders (1978) get the respect it deserves? The first third is cheap and overall it's sleazy but there's actually some intense character driven moments and an curious motive (even when over the top it's amusing)... most slashers just focus on kills and de-identify the culprit (who is Jason anyway?) so TBM is sort of a refreshing "anti-slasher."

I'm curious about Excision also, please let us know what you think. It's $9.99 with upgrade & save at Best Buy so I might blind buy.

When a Stranger Calls was annoyingly disappointing. The first 20 minutes were so great and then it goes horribly downhill

Need to start getting back into the horror challenge as I took a few days off from not watching anything. Maybe watch some Hammer tonight, as I see TCM is airing Hammer Horror films this evening.

I really enjoy The Plumber as well, and definitely see the Cable Guy parallels. It also has a really interesting score. I have it on DVD with an even better Weir film, the sci-fi/comedy/horror Cars that Ate Paris, which should count for the challenge as well.
