| |||||||||
What is This Thing? Since its inception in 2005 the goal of this challenge has been to reach 100 horror films in a month's time. Obviously that's not an attainable goal for everyone, so your personal goal is of your choosing. Whether it's achieved, surpassed or beyond your reach, the ultimate goal here is to enjoy yourself while conversing with fellow genre fans.
Creating a List. As always, there will be a separate list thread posted roughly 2 weeks prior to the October 1st start date. Be creative and personalize your list however you wish - give reviews, post pics, link to your blog or start one on your page, provide IMDB links with your titles, add YouTube videos, include running times, etc. The forum software now allows for unlimited post length, although you're still welcome to post it in a weekly or biweekly format. Also be aware the image limit has been raised from 25 to 35 since the last challenge. And it's not a bad idea to provide a link to the list in your signature for easier access. The only mandatory rule here is NUMBER YOUR LISTS!
What Counts? If you're uncertain of the title's genre classification the IMDB and AllRovi (formerly allmovie.com) are the go-to sources for determining its potential horror movie status. Need more confirmation? A third and fourth option exists and that is FlickChart (requires free sign up) and TMDB. Of course, any site is prone to the occasional error and if you feel that's the case asking in the discussion thread is advised. Just keep in mind that the #1 deciding factor regarding what counts is you and you alone.
Every facet of horror counts: Horror-comedies, Sci-Fi horror, wretchedly bad horror [INSERT CURRENT REMAKE HERE], kiddie horror, creature features, erotic / XXX horror, Masters of Horror, silents, made-for-TV movies, etc.
The formats and how you watch them is strictly your call -- Blu-ray, DVD, Netflix Watch Instantly, HD DVD, at the theater, on television, public domain downloads (links provided below), VHS, Laserdisc, Video On Demand, Netflix disc-by-mail, UMD, MiniDV, CED, Amazon Instant Video, through your neighbor's window, Roku, Nexus Q, Apple TV, a Boxee Box, Hulu, Youtube, Payperview, Betamax, via laptop, netbook, VCD, a smartphone, a tablet ...you name it. And yes, that even includes the pan & scan, edited-for-television movies that air on TBS with multiple pop-ups and commercial interruptions (NOT recommended!). Just make sure the film is viewed in it's entirety.
This row has remained empty since 2010!
You're welcome to include non-genre titles viewed during the month in your list, but please keep them separate from your qualifying entries and don't number them.
Sometime in November there will be a results thread posted. If you wish to be included in the stats provided (aside from your number ranking), please include the following in your list: - First time viewings. The ☼ thing is a commonly used symbol. - Formats viewed. (BD, DVD, NWI, etc.) - Your personal goal ...even if it happens to be the challenge's goal of 100.
Keep it civil. The intention here is to have fun, so please don't take this event started by a guy with just a little too much time on his hands that seriously. |

Just a reminder for those of you with MeTV: The Deadly Mantis is playing on "Svengoolie" tonight. Right now, in fact.
Speaking of television horror hosts, I was watching through the interviews on Criterion's Island of Lost Souls disc and learned that Cleveland's Ghoulardi is director Paul Thomas Anderson's father! There's got to be a movie in that somewhere.

I watched this again today too. The Blu-ray looks almost like genuine projection on my set-up, it's one I've watched a half-dozen times at least. Craven repaid the nod to Hills in Nightmare when Nancy is watching a trailer for Evil Dead. I endured my worst film so far earlier today: Deadtime Tales. Wretched acting, sub-Troma comedy, bargain fx and some of the most aggravating "score" music ever.

Ilsa, the Wicked Warden is on Youtube.
I watched John McNaughton's The Borrower for the exploding head theme. Talk about a complete 180 in tone for his followup to Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. From the opening scene, I knew I was in for a cheesy good time. Lots of fun.

Anyone ever go to Best Buy, Walmart, etc and just buy the mutlipack of like 8 or whatever movies for like 5 bucks and hope something out of the list is good? Bought a few of them and hoping for a couple of good viewings.

Bug Day - The Nest, Them!, and Arachnid. Changed it up and finished with The Tomb (yes... that tomb). All first time viewings. Arachnid was a pleasant surprise with a pretty impressive giant spider. It even moved well. Them also highly recommended. The Tomb though..... cheap target halloween decorations for the win.

You're welcome.
Just finished a twelve pack of Heineken and watching Yongary, Monster from the Deep, which helps immensely. This week starts my Godzilla 40-movie marathon and ye gods, is this horrible. This is like "Dad, I'm pregnant" horrible. This is post 90s Madonna horrible. This is an abomination. This makes baby Jesus cry, and I have already watched ThanksKilling. This is Oscar Meyer loaf product awful.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 8th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P
Tonight marked my first double feature and films I've seen before after only watching first time viewings so far. I decided to liven things up with some exploitation craziness with The Toxic Avenger, unrated version. I did watch the R version in a past challenge, so it was nice seeing the film intact again. It's one of Troma's best and extremely entertaining.
I then watched Waxwork which I hadn't seen in years and watched the double feature release I had of it for the first time. It's a fun film, and I guess I was wrong with things appearing cut in the finale when I saw the R version years ago on vhs. Since various moments I thought were cut(offscreen kills) were edited in the same manner on the dvd as the R rated vhs. So it appears only the vampire sequence suffered some cuts between the two versions.

Went to see HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA today. Great animated movie. Had great laughs in it. Great movie to take your kids to.
Glad you liked the castle, asianxcore. I used to live around there. Beautiful area in the fall. Did you get a chance to go to Sutter Creek or Jackson?

Watched the commentary on the Scream (1996) blu-ray today with Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson and was impressed. Some good anecdotes, discussions of themes, favorite shots, horror cliches, writer motivations, etc. Would recommend checking out.

I really enjoyed it. I think I might even like it better than the original, which is a favorite of mine, though there are things I think the original does better.

It's technically a crime movie. But so are 90% of Argento's films, so it probably wouldn't be a big deal if you counted it. I don't want to open up anything on what can count again, but since you mentioned it...

After a pretty mediocre run, I've watched two pretty good movies so far today; Spiral and Stake Land. Spiral was a fun ride, although I wasn't really sure where it was going but the end made it totally worth it. And Stake Land had a really great dark and bleak atmosphere.
