100 Movies. 31 Days. October 1st - 31st, 2010
THE ORIGINAL SHIT-TON OF FUN.

RE-VISIT THE PAST |
THIS THREAD IS FOR DISCUSSION ONLY!
THE "RULES" | |
Since 2005 the goal of the challenge has been to reach 100 horror films in a month's time. Obviously this is not an attainable goal for everyone, so your personal goal is as high or as low as you choose. Whether it's achieved, surpassed, or not even close to being reached, the ultimate goal here is to enjoy yourself while conversing with fellow horror fans.
As always, there will be a separate list thread posted roughly 2 weeks prior to the start date. Be creative and personalize your list however you wish - give reviews, post pics, link to your blog or start one on your page, provide IMDB links with your titles, add YouTube videos, include running times (calculating total times is up to you), etc. The forum software now allows for unlimited post length, although you're still welcome to post it in a weekly or biweekly format. It's also highly recommended that you provide a link to the list in your signature for easier access. The only mandatory rule here is NUMBER YOUR LISTS!
If you're uncertain of the title's genre classification the IMDB and allmovie are the go-to sources for determining its potential horror movie status. Of course, both sites have been known to make the occasional error and if you feel that's the case asking in the discussion thread is advised. Just keep in mind that the main deciding factor regarding what counts is you and you alone.
Every facet of horror counts: Horror-comedies, Sci-Fi horror, wretchedly bad horror [Insert Current Remake Here], kiddie horror, creature features, erotic horror, Masters of Horror, silents, made-for-TV movies, etc.
Sometime in November there will be a results thread posted. If you wish to be included in the stats provided (aside from your number ranking), please include the following in your list: - First time viewings. The ☼ is a commonly used symbol. - Formats viewed. (BD, DVD, HD DVD, etc.) Blue text is often used to indicate Blu-rays. - Your personal goal. Even if it happens to be the challenge's goal of 100.
Something might go here eventually. Stay tuned!
The formats and how you watch them is strictly your call -- DVD, Blu-ray, HD DVD, at the theater, on television, public domain downloads (links provided below), VHS, Laserdisc, Video On Demand, Netflix, UMD, MiniDV, CED, Unbox, through your neighbor's window, Apple TV, Watch Instantly, Hulu, Youtube, Payperview, Betamax, via laptop, netbook, VCD, Android phone, iPhone, iPad...you name it. And yes, that even includes the pan & scan edited-for-television movies that air on TBS with multiple pop-ups and commercial interruptions (NOT recommended!). Just make sure the film is viewed in it's entirety.
Keep it civil. We're here to have fun, so please don't take this thing too seriously.
You're welcome to include non-genre titles viewed during the month in your list, but please don't number them. |

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 6th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P
After midnight, we sat down with the double feature of Critters and Broken Lizard's Club Dread. Here are my thoughts:
Critters
Another first time viewing for me of one of my wife's favorites. The story is pretty straightforward: a group of violent "Crites" has stolen a spaceship and landed in Kansas. This is clearly a product of the 80s; the hero of the film is a precocious young boy whose idea of fun revolves around making his own firecrackers. There are some obvious sexist overtones; dad keeps getting attacked, but keeps persevering, while mom largely screams and is in a daze for most of the film after taking a singular quill to the throat, and the son is the brave one, while his older sister contributes absolutely nothing to the survival of the family. Still, the film holds up fairly well--at least, for someone from its target audience generation
Broken Lizard's Club Dread
The comedy troupe turns in its take on the slasher film, and it's played a lot more straight than you'd think. It's not so much a horror comedy as it simply a self-aware slasher film. Coconut Pete (Bill Paxton), a Jimmy Buffett-type singer, has established his own hedonistic island resort in Costa Rica...and now the staff is being targeted for vicious killings. There are enough red herrings to keep you guessing, and plenty of eye candy between acts of violence.

To continue the Halloween 3 discussion, I also liked it as it's own stand alone film. The only time I didn't like it was as a kid. I'd never seen any of the movies but this is the one that was always on TV. I thought it was stupid since it was about masks and never got very far into it. Watching it now, it's much more enjoyable.

Quick question on the checklist- For the category "Watch a film and 2 of its sequels" would it count if I watched 3 successive sequels from the original Mummy series? I've already watched The Mummy's Tomb, and I'm about to watch The Mummy's Ghost. If I were to watch the final film (The Mummy's Curse) from the series would that count? Or is the first film in a series necessary?

Last night I decided to hook up the laserdisc player for a double feature of Scream (uncut version) and In The Mouth Of Madness.
Scream is still a whole lot of fun and still delivers the goods. The video store scene never fails to put a smile on my face,it's so hilarious, and the finale works up to being delirious and pretty damn amusing in a darkly humorous way as the
It's funny how the film was faced with an NC-17 at the time until it was cut considering what passes through R ratings today. This would so easily get an R uncut today if resubmitted. The audio on the laserdisc really impresses me more than the dvd as well. It's quite powerful and filled with details that always went over my head in other releases even when I saw it theatrically. It seems a bit darker as well as a result. I recall Craven mentioning in Fangoria how they had to tone down the audio for being 'too intense' at the time as well as cutting some violence to avoid the NC-17. So either the audio was restored to it's proper levels on the laserdisc, or it's just the laserdisc not being compressed. Either way,it's an excellent audio mix.
This was only my second time viewing In The Mouth Of Madness. The first time was nearly 10 years ago when I first got a used laserdisc player and found this and Scream for a nice low price. So it's one of the few Carpenter films I had not seen until years later. I was a huge Carpenter fan growing up and loved everything I saw of his from Assault On Precinct 13 to They Live. So he had a good run before running out of steam.
Anyway, the film is probably the last good movie he made from what I can tell. It was interesting and had some good atmosphere. Sam Neil is always fun to watch even in the worst movies and delivers a great performance as reality falls a part around him. I don't know if I would say it's his 'best' film or not, since I don't have the connection with it like I do with his mid 70's- late 80's work that also have huge nostalgia value for me. But it didn't bore me and did keep my interest from beginning to end, and man does the opening and ending score rock with Carpenter and company jamming on guitar. The opening credits really put a smile on my face as the music was just grooving as I've always enjoyed Carpenters scores.

Just finished watching Jeepers Creepers with my wife and cousin. My wife and I watched it together when we first started seeing each other seven years ago, and it was pretty creepy then. I was surprised how creepy it was this time, too, although there's something to be said for watching it at night by ourselves at her mom's house (a place old enough it was used in the underground railroad) and during the afternoon here. Also, I had no idea who Justin Long was when we first watched it and I had forgotten he was in it until we popped in the disc just now. For my money, it's aged well in the nine years since it was made.

This is one of the pictures that made me march in to [Warner Bros. studio chief Jack L. Warner] and ask for more money again. You can't believe what this one was like. I had a part that somebody like Bela Lugosi or Boris Karloff should have played. I was this doctor, brought back to life, and the only thing that nourished this poor bastard was blood. If it had been Jack Warner's blood, or Harry's, or Pop's, maybe I wouldn't have minded as much. The trouble was, they were drinking mine and I was making this stinking movie.
