For the subset I would suggest Fearless Vampire Killers or Captain Kronos - Vampire Hunter or House of Dark Shadows.

Did I mention the list thread is up? I'm hoping that people flocking over here to reserve their list space will take the time to give their subset picks because, like last year, we will have 31 people again.
The Annual Picking of the 31 Film Subset List Has Officially Begun!
For those that are new to this we as a group pick 31 movies (1 for each day of the month) and the chosen titles get their own separate discussion thread along with a mention of the person who picked that particular film (click the first spoiler button for examples of previous lists). We also try and sync up the subset list 100% with the theme nights list - example being if someone picked Shock Waves that would be placed on either 10/9 for "Zombie Films" or 10/16 for "Third Reich Terrors".
So it goes like this...
Avoid picking films that are on any of the previous lists:
Browse over the theme nights list and make sure your picks fits in with one of the themes/sub-genres listed:
Try and give at least a couple or more suggestions and from different themes/sub-genres if you can while being aware of what others are picking. I'll try and include your first pick but can't guarantee it will be used. Also be aware that there's always the chance I may have to ask you pick another suggestion entirely.
Make sure your suggestions are readily available and haven't gone OOP. While it's not a requirement, it doesn't hurt to have them streaming at Netflix. Just make sure if you do pick a Netflix Watch Instantly title that the licensing agreement isn't about to expire. A good place to check for expiration dates is InstantWatcher.com.
Also, if someone gets their suggestion chosen their backup picks are up for grabs.
I see a couple of others have already given their picks, so I'll go ahead and do the same. In a supernatural mood (10/26) so I'm gonna go with The Innkeepers (2011). As a backup pick I'll go with The Vampire Lovers (1970).

For Halloween night itself, how about Murder Party? It's streaming on Netflix. The plot: An ordinary guy find a stray paper on the street by his house that is an invitation to a Halloween party that turns out to be a, well, check the title. It's a fun and quite gory indie flick that is a must-see for me each year.

Anyone have a list of horror birthdays, holidays, or other important dates during October? I feel like we had to have done this at some point since 2005. Maybe we can do some synching of those with the themes and subset picks as well.

I reserved my spot, and it's the first time I'm on the first page. That will be nice.
I do intend on tossing out a subset suggestion, but I'm going to need to give it a little thought.

I'm a big 50s atomic monster guy, so my pick for this year's subset is The Giant Claw (1957) and as backup, the seminal critter flick Them! (1954).

I'll nominate A Tale of Two Sisters for the Asian day (available through Netflix). As an alternative, I'd offer Kuroneko , which fits the Asian and Criterion days (probably appropriate for a few other days as well) and is available through Hulu Plus, as an alternative choice.

My pick: I Sell the Dead (2008) - grave robbing.

All are streaming on Netflix.

So perhaps we can nominate a Criterion film for that night and have 32 subset films as well. Please?

I'll go with "Lychanthrope Lunacy" and The Wolf Man (1941 - Lon Chaney) with the backup of "Bela...Bram. Bram...Bela" and Dracula (1931 - Bela Lugosi) to fully combine the two. If you would rather go with separate films, one for Bela and/or one for Bram then I would suggest The White Zombie (1932 - Bela Lugosi) or Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979 - Klaus Kinski).

Imdb.com classified Salo as a "thriller" and if I recall correctly thrillers count. It doesn't get much more torture porn that Salo and specifically Circle of Blood chapter is a fit in my opinion. If Saw counts then so too should Salo.
I would also consider Seventh Seal worthy of this challenge. Aside from the character of death, the main focus is on the tension is trying to stall death. There's no jump scares but it doesn't get much more horror than a slow burn standoff with death. The pacing is atypical for a genre film but I say go for it. Both fit Wikipedia's definition of a horror movie . Worse case you could use a wild card for either.

I still think Seventh Seal, while an impressive movie, doesn't have a place in this challenge. I cringe sometimes at how we stretch the definition of horror in October (not meant to be directed at any one person). I still remember someone one year arguing The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad should count because it has animated skeletons or something along those lines. It does get a bit ridiculous. I think Seventh Seal should count as much as Meet Joe Black should, but I guess that's what wild cards are for.

Lame - Netflix doesn't carry any of the films I would have chosen for 1960s: Queen of Blood, Planet of the Vampires, The Sorcerers, Eye of the Devil...
I don't have streaming so I can't check availability, but if any are up they would be my choice(s) for 10/2.
