<em>The "Rules"

<BR>

</td></tr><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#778899>
What is This Thing?

Since its inception in 2005 the goal of this challenge has been to watch 100 horror films in a month's time. Obviously that's not an attainable goal for everyone, so your personal goal is of your choosing. Whether it's achieved, surpassed or beyond your reach, the ultimate goal here is to enjoy yourself while conversing with fellow genre fans.
</td><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#98a8a8>
Creating a List.

As always, there will be a separate list thread posted roughly 2 weeks prior (possibly sooner!) to the October 1st start date. Be creative and personalize your list however you wish - give reviews, post pics, link to your blog or start one on your page, provide IMDB links with your titles, add YouTube videos, include running times, etc.

The forum software now allows for unlimited post length, although you're still welcome to post it in a weekly or biweekly format. Also be aware the image limit has been raised from 35 to 60. And it's not a bad idea to provide a link to the list in your signature for easier access.

The date for list completion is November 15.

The only mandatory rule here is NUMBER YOUR LISTS!
</td></tr><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#B0B0B0>

What Counts?

If you're uncertain of the title's genre classification the IMDB and AllMovie are the go-to sources for determining its potential horror movie status.
Need more confirmation? A third and fourth option exists and that is FlickChart (requires free sign up) and TMDB.
Of course, any site is prone to the occasional error and if you feel that's the case asking in the discussion thread is advised.
Just keep in mind that the #1 deciding factor regarding what counts is you and you alone.

Movies = 1 entry (despite running time)

TV shows count according to length as they're aired on TV (including commercials):

30 minute shows = ¼ an entry
1 hour shows = ½ an entry
90 minute shows = ¾ an entry
2 hour shows = 1 entry

Mini-Series = 1 entry for each day it aired

Commentaries count. (no restrictions)

Documentaries count.

A SLIGHTLY MORE COMPLICATED EXPLANATION:
Spoiler:

Concerning TV shows and shorts films:
<table border="20"><tr>
<td bgcolor=#B0B0B0>

Like the other challenges, you need four 30 minute shows for 1 entry and two hour-long shows for 1 entry. 30 minute shows typically run roughly 22 - 24 minutes without commercials and hour-long shows are roughly 43 - 45 minutes. If it's short films that are 10 minutes or less, once you hit around 23 minutes of watching them, you've reached one 30 minute show (¼ an entry). Any combination that gets you to 90 minutes can be used for 1 entry. And this is not an exact science, so if you're off by a little it's really no big deal.

When listing the TV shows try to keep them together in 1 entry.
(Example: 30 min show/30 min show/30 min show/30 min show)

For the sake of organization, it's advised that you keep a Temporary TV section at the bottom of your list until you get enough for an entry.

Why 90 minutes? To keep the continuity going with the other challenges.

Every facet of horror counts: Horror-comedies, Sci-Fi horror, wretchedly bad horror [INSERT CURRENT REMAKE HERE], kiddie horror, creature features, erotic / XXX horror, Masters of Horror, silents, made-for-TV movies, etc.

</td><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#7B7B7B>
The formats and how you watch them is strictly your call -- Blu-ray, DVD, Netflix Watch Instantly, HD DVD, at the theater, on television, public domain downloads (links provided below), VHS, Laserdisc, Video On Demand, Netflix disc-by-mail, UMD, MiniDV, CED, Amazon Instant Video, through your neighbor's window, Roku, Google Chromecast, Apple TV, a Boxee Box, Amazon Fire TV, Hulu, Youtube, Payperview, Betamax, via laptop, netbook, VCD, a smartphone, a tablet ...you name it. And yes, that even includes the pan & scan, edited-for-television movies that air on TBS with obnoxious on-screen graphics and commercial interruptions (NOT recommended!). Just make sure the film is viewed in it's entirety.
</td></tr><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#778899>
Row #6 - Proud to be unoccupied since 2010!
</td></tr><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#98a8a8>
You're welcome to include non-genre titles viewed during the month in your list, but please keep them separate from your qualifying entries and don't number them.
</td></tr><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#B0B0B0>
Sometime in November there will be a results thread posted. If you wish to be included in the stats provided (aside from your number ranking), please include the following in your list:

- First time viewings. The thing is a commonly used symbol.
- Formats viewed. (BD, DVD, NWI, etc.)
- Your personal goal ...even if it happens to be the challenge's goal of 100.

</td></tr><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#7B7B7B>
Keep it civil. The intention here is to have fun, so please don't take this event started by a guy with just a little too much time on his hands that seriously.

Also, the threads from the 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 Subset Lists and even the old HFC List can be used for individual discussion if desired. This year's list is HERE

Complete it and feel a sense of accomplishment. The Expanded Checklist is HERE.

Use for titles that lie outside the horror genre and normally wouldn't qualify or for those questionable titles you're not 100% certain about. They can also be used to count titles that aren't intended to be included as a full entry (I.E. a leftover 30-minute TV episode or short film). You have 3 so use them wisely.

For every 100 movies watched, you earn 1 extra wild card.

Provide a link to your list in your signature.
Review it. Even if it's just a mini-review, a simple  / :thmbsdwn: or one word description.
Subscribe to this thread for the latest posts (Thread Tools → Subscribe to this Thread).

Create a list in advance of what you plan to watch utilizing a site such as:
iCheckMovies | Listal
| Listology | ListPhile | FlickChart | Ranker.

If you're indecisive and can't decide what to watch next copy/paste your titles into the List Randomizer (via random.org).

If you're doing a checklist, putting it in a spoiler tag makes the list thread much easier to read.
Increase your coffee consumption.
Insomniac? Use your disadvantage to your advantage!
Work from home? Ditto.
Save the supplemental material for November!
Boredom setting in? Watch another movie!
Stay within your comfort level and try not to get too caught up in the numbers.
ENJOY YOURSELF!

An amazing lineup of prizes from Hamilton Books and GW! And I can't wait to see what Diabolik offers up, they're one of the best companies around for hard to find and import stuff. We're lucky to have 2 amazing companies on board this year.

Wow, those are some amazing prize packs from Hamilton! And Diabolik signed on! Both are fantastic stores.

I'm just sitting here, waiting for time to go by. I miss living on the east coast. I could already be up in this by now. I'm doing some unofficial pre-game viewings with my son of episodes of The Real Ghostbusters on Youtube.

Thanks to all of the sponsors and the prizes that were donated. As others have said, it's not why we do this month-long exhibit of insanity, but it's very much appreciated. :) With that being said, a big wow goes to Hamilton Books. And great news about Diabolik DVD!

I have to leave for my piano lesson right at dusk. I'm going to lose about 90 minutes of valuable viewing time! I'm already behind! Ugh!

But I'm so happy it's finally here. Bring on the blood. :chainsaw:

Almost didn't do seasonal beers this year (mostly because I couldn't find 31 new beers) but it was so fun last year I decided to give it at least one more go.

This years batch (a little over 56 percent first time drinks)

Tonights beer is a new on for this year.

I'm only 30 minutes into my first movie (Death Spa) and there's already a conteder for best quote of the challenge...

An exchange between a girl and a guy in the gym:

Girl: How many reps can you do?
Guy: 15 to 20... more if I'm showing off
Girl: Well why don't you show off for me
Guy: I never waste effort in the gym.... besides I'm Betamax and you're VHS.

Pure gold.

First of all great looking prizes from HamiltonBooks.
2nd, decided I wanted to start with a first time view for my first movie of the challenge, so rather than watch Cat People (1942) or King Kong (1933), I looked at my Netflix queue and booted up Halloween: Resurrection. Always enjoyed the Halloween franchise.

Just finished my first feature. As usual I went with my whims rather than my plans by watching Magic Cop (alias Mr. Vampire 5, but no real relation) (1990). A zippy horror comedy police procedural.

A big thanks to all the sponsors for indulging our collective Halloween whims.

First film was Tusk. Thought Michael Parks and Joseph did an amazing job. Side story was kind of eh, but really enjoyed the interaction better Michael and Joseph. Just dragged at the end. But a nice start. Think I may tackle the checklist as I've never done that before.

Watched The Uninvited, meh- not bad but not excellent, and The Brood, which was a lot of fun to revisit and has a great script. Now onward to Stalled, with it's awkward character humor so far [Edit: Wow, Stalled got more intense - nice!].

Hopefully Criterion release The Brood sooner rather than later.

I started with The Phantom Carriage (1921) in which Death helms a carriage that kindly stops for drunkard David Holm with a lot of tragic news. I really enjoyed the film and found the visuals mesmerizing.

Inspired by SterlingBen's epic beer tasting, I'm trying something a little more different this year. I'm going to branch out into other media and keep tabs on non-film horror and horror-inspired media I take in this month. So far, I've listened to some of Nick Cave and the Bad Seed's Murder Ballads as well as the first episode of Welcome to Night Vale, a horror-comedy podcast about a small desert community with its fair share of robed entities, demonic librarians, and real estate agents living in deer.

While Halloween: Resurrection wasn't as good as I'd hoped it would be, for my 2nd movie of the night, I shifted years to kaiju and put in Godzilla Raids Again. Not one of the better Godzilla movies, but I'm watching the Toho movies in order, and I love kaiju anyways.

I'm HOPING the Giants-Pirates game does not end like that and is a quick game (pitchers doing their job) with a Giants win so I can at least get 1 movie in for theme night. Luckily got 3 in tonight, but tomorrow, not so sure.

I hate the fact that i'm behind the 8-ball already. Had to work tonight so I missed the 30th dusk start time. But got home and started things off with Brides of Dracula. A nice Hammer that I have enjoyed over the years. Although I hate the ending. Not the title that I had predicted to watch first, but my tastes change like the wind. So i'm off to a good start. Hoping to average 2 films a day. Some days won't have any, i'm afraid, but other days i'll be able to do more than two. So it should even out as I go along. This is some great stuff!

Both Saturn 3 and The Howling have dropped to all time lows of $15.99 each at Amazon. (Scream Factory releases)

Would Saturn 3 be considered horror? It scared me when I was a kid but I just see genre tags of Sci-Fi and Thriller on it.

I love that October 8th also has a theme option for watching flicks from Full Moon Entertainment. Just noticed that as I was going through it.

Still haven't gotten to my first film, which will be later this evening. I'm going with Stalled since I keep getting stalled myself. I knew these first couple of days would be busy with work, etc. But I have the appropriate hours set aside to get one a day until Saturday. Then I can start getting more entrenched in my favorite month.
