It's Award Season again. Are there any changes folks want made to the rules and regulations of this challenge?
|
Re: The 18th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge Discussion Thread
Unless I miss my guess about potential nominations, I may do a Barbenheimer double feature somewhere along the line.

Re: The 18th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge Discussion Thread
Thanks Darkgod. I went on TCM's website this morning and couldn't find the list.
I'm open to the snubbed option as there are always snubs. |
Re: The 18th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge Discussion Thread
The list thread is up and running. I'll add the snubbed option in a minute if there are no objections.

My favorite challenge!!!
I recently went 4K, so my goal is to get through all the 4k content I've been throwing money at... |
Re: The 18th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge Discussion Thread
The nominees have been named and to the surprise of absolutely no body: Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon and Barbie racked up.
I'm happy that American Fiction got some love even if it's unlikely it will win a single award. Happy watching everyone! |

Having a home office definitely helps. I kicked things off this morning with a viewing of the original Great Gatsby while channel surfing.

Re: The 18th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge Discussion Thread
I watched All The King's Men (1949) last night and if I had watched it ten years ago, I would have waved it off as being over the top in terms of political commentary. Watching it last night, I felt like this film could be released today with minor tweaks and feel way too realistic.

Re: The 18th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge Discussion Thread
Had a delightful time seeing Poor Things this afternoon, and think Emma Stone's performance towers over the other four nominees, many of whom are playing more subdued parts. I agree with the notion that people generally aren't voting for what they think is the best actor so much as the best character. Even though I have no idea if the voters watch all the movies, I would be betting on Emma Stone.

Re: The 18th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge Discussion Thread
I find myself on the wrong side of the critics this year. I watched Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon and did enjoy either of them. I'm rooting for The Holdovers.

Re: The 18th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge Discussion Thread
I finally finished 2023's list of nominees with Tell It Like a Woman. This really teaches me that I need to get over being a completest and not worry so much about watching these obscure Original Song nominees. Getting nominated for a song does NOT necessarily make it a good film! Not that it was terrible, but definitely not up to the level of most Oscar nominees. I'm happy to finish last year's list though. It was shameless the way they used the song too! It was used once in one of the 7 segments in the film, then used for the closing credits, then AGAIN in the closing credits along with what I think was the music video playing off to the side of the credits. Then, because they had credits to show for basically 7 short films, they just had dead air over the remaining time (several minutes). Couldn't even throw some public domain stuff in there? So the music in the film amounted to one song played 3 times!

Re: The 18th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge Discussion Thread
Watched The Hospital from 1971, which won the award for original screenplay, which back then, had the outrageously long category title: "Best Story and Screenplay Based on Factual Material or Material Not Previously Produced or Published". The other category was titled: "Best Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium".
I found this interesting in light of hearing people question why Barbie is an adapted screenplay and Oppenheimer is not, because it seems the Academy is being consistent on differentiating between a script based on something factual and a script based on something from another medium, be it a novel, a play... or as it were, characters from a line of children's toys. |
Re: The 18th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge Discussion Thread
Yesterday, I returned to my comfort Oscar film: Jaws. I wrote in my Letterboxd review that I think it is a perfect film. It fires on all cylinders and I have no notes. Does anyone else have what they think are perfect Oscar films?

Ninety-Five Senses and Our Uniform added. Watch 'em before they disappear!

Re: The 18th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge Discussion Thread
Society of the Snow was riveting! When I saw that it was another 2.5 hr film, I was weary, but it flew by! Such a hopeless situation, very well presented.
