The 9th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (January 24 - February 22)
The 9th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge

Official Rules
-ANY movie that has been NOMINATED or WON an Academy Award counts
-There is NO time limit, meaning it doesn't matter how long or short the item in question is, as long as it has been nominated or won an Academy Award
-You can watch a movie once then count it again if you watch the same film with a commentary
-There WILL BE a separate thread for LISTS ONLY created shortly before the challenge begins.
-You can count the actual Academy Awards Ceremony to be televised on Sunday February 22 2015 as an entry if you'd like.
-There will be an "In Memoriam" Wild Card option. You can select up to 10 films to watch featuring a celebrity that died during 2014. But only ONE movie per celebrity. For example: You can watch "Dark Passage" to honor Lauren Bacall but you cannot watch another Lauren Bacall movie that did not win or was not nominated for an Oscar unless another celebrity that died during 2014 is in it. If that makes sense... The celebrity has to have died in 2014.
-The challenge begins on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 12:00am CST and will end at 11:59pm on Sunday, February 22 2015
- You can watch current nominees starting on Thursday, January 15 and have them count.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, REMEMBER TO NUMBER YOUR LISTS

While I can't wholly recommend it, due to quasi legality, there is a private channel on Roku called WoWTV that has some of the current nominees in their movie library. It costs $25/month, for live tv, movies on demand, and tv shows on demand.

For those who have a participating cable/satellite provider, TCM is available to watch on your computer. It would be good if a movie is on for the challenge, and you can't be by the TV. I just finished watching 7th Voyage of Sinbad, as I plan to use it a lot, seeing as I watch more TV in my bedroom.

Even though the challenge doesn't officially start for another week, while looking for eligible movies on the first week, I'm pondering watching some other movies before they become eligible.

lisadoris, thanks for getting this going. I will be going to see Selma this weekend… seems appropriate. Remember, two of the foreign film nominees are currently on Netflix: Ida and Virunda.

I like the idea of current nominees being allowed right now. I'm starting tonight with one. Great stuff.

And. I'll second the thanks to lisadoris!
Maybe we should number our lists separately from our main lists and call this week a "Pre-Challenge"

And, I will still offer up a few Oscar winning and nominated DVDs from the past for the winner!

Re: The 9th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (January 24 - February 22)
I just tried watching Crisis Hotline, and while it seemed like a powerful documentary, I had to turn it off. It was just hitting too close to home for me, as I've been where those veterans are.

Thanks for hosting, Lisa! For those who live near a Cinemark theater, there are a couple things to be aware of during the challenge. Firstly, they're doing their Oscar Movie Week. You can purchase tickets to individual shows, or buy a festival pass for $40 to see all eight Best Picture nominees:
2/13 7:00 Birdman
2/13 10:00 Selma
2/14 1:00 Theory of Everything
2/14 4:00 Grand Budapest Hotel
2/14 7:00 Whiplash
2/14 10:00 American Sniper
2/15 4:00 Imitation Game
2/15 7:00 Boyhood
Encore showings throughout the subsequent week, detailed in the full listing linked above. The shorts will play from 2/20-22; their schedule isn't posted, but they are included in the $40 festival pass.
Also, there's the Cinemark Classic Series, which will consist of the following eligible films:
1/25 2:00; 1/28 2:00 & 7:00 How the West Was Won
2/1 2:00; 2/4 2:00 & 7:00 Funny Girl
2/8 2:00; 2/11 2:00 & 7:00 Breakfast at Tiffany's
2/15 2:00; 2/18 2:00 & 7:00 Giant

Re: The 9th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (January 24 - February 22)
I've seen twelve of the nominees (most summer blockbusters and animated features), plus one of the shorts (the delightful Feast), so I've going to have quite a bit of watching on my hands between now and the 22nd.
I was too excited to wait until the official start and began my pre-challenge, current-nominee-extravaganza (excellent idea!) with John Carney's Begin Again (rented from Redbox). I'm a fan of Mark Ruffalo and Keira Knightley and I'm quite fond of Carney's Once, so I expected to enjoy the film. I didn't expect to be as blown away as I was by its effortless charm and genial shabbiness. I could have easily spent more time watching this group of quirky people dash about New York, record music, and celebrate their craft. There is an infectious joy and a genuine love that made me want to dash to my local record shop. I also feel compelled to dust off my piano and annoy my neighbors with my rusty playing.

MysterioMan007, welcome to the talk, but Gone Girl you listed on the list wouldn't count. This doesn't start until the 24th. You would have to rewatch it again.

Re: The 9th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (January 24 - February 22)
darkhawk, looks like we've opened up a can of worms....according to the rules above, 2014 nominees-only are allowed in the challenge....meaning that you could watch any of the 45 feature films and 15 Shorts or Documentary Shorts nominated for 2014 and they would count. On January 24th, that opens up to anything that was ever nominated or won (including wild cards).

I was posting and editing at the same time as you posted this...
I am assuming MysterioMan007 is fine...
This certainly gives me more time to finish up some of my screeners and focus on some oldies during the main challenge, so...

I got the day going by checking out Virunga. A dangerous, compelling film. This afternoon, I took my daughters to see Selma… powerful film. It's a shame with the snubs that the director Ava DuVernay and actor David Oyelowo got from the Academy. I guess you chalk it up to inexperience and Bradley Cooper respectively.

So I just watched Crisis Hotline Veterans Press 1 (thanks for the link Mao) and even though the doc is only 40 minutes it took me almost 90 minutes to watch it. It was so heartbreaking and infuriating that I had to keep pausing it. I am in awe of the people who work at the hotline because that job would break me and it pisses me off that we're not doing more for our Veterans (I'm glaring at you Tom Coburn).

They're making easy cash for not doing much work and I kind of wish I'd thought of doing it myself.
