The 17th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (January 24 - March 12, 2023)
The 17th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge
Official Rules
- ANY movie that has been NOMINATED or WON an Academy Award counts
- There is NO time limit, meaning it doesn't matter how long or short the item in question is, as long as it has been nominated or won an Academy Award
- You can watch a movie once then count it again if you watch the same film with a commentary
- There WILL BE a separate thread for LISTS ONLY created shortly before the challenge begins.
- You can count the actual Academy Awards Ceremony to be televised on Sunday March 12, 2023 as an entry if you'd like.
- There will be an "In Memoriam" Wild Card option. You can select up to 10 films to watch featuring a celebrity that died since the last Oscar Ceremony. But only ONE movie per celebrity. For example: You can watch “Star Trek 5: The Final Frontier” to honor Nichelle Nichols but you cannot watch another Nichols movie that did not win or was not nominated for an Oscar unless it stars another eligible celebrity. If that makes sense... The celebrity has to have died since the last ceremony.
- The challenge begins at dawn local time Tuesday, January 24 at and will end at 11:59 pm on Sunday, March 12.

I wanted to give the TV-on-DVD Challenge some room to breathe on its own before jumping in. Nothing about this Challenge really changes from year to year so I don't anticipate a lot of discussion before everyone starts their viewing. Though, if there are changes anyone wants to make to the Challenge, just post em.

My wife was just asking when this challenge starts, since it's her favorite. I think it should be January 24th, not February.

Me too. Thanks to the mods for fixing the thread title.
I really hope Everything, Everywhere, All At Once gets nominated for Best Picture.

I just decided to check chrome on my Pixel, and the database does work there. Just not iPhones I guess. But that might help people who can't get on a computer.

Worth sharing: Every Film Ever Nominated for an Academy Award in Any Category, a list on Letterboxd. There's an index to smaller lists of just winners or all nominees for each category and for each year. It's especially handy for identifying what I can stream with my current subscriptions, as well as what's in my own library already. For the curious, here's the breakdown for the following subscription services (US). Of course, these numbers will change once this year's nominations are announced, and again on the 1st when the services update their offerings for the new month. There's also redundancy; some movies may be streaming on half a dozen of these services. In all, 1490 of the 5031 nominated titles are available on at least one of the following:
Premium Services
Amazon Prime - 247
AppleTV+ - 6
Criterion Channel - 223
Disney+ - 191
HBO Max - 367
Hulu - 68
Netflix - 114
Paramount+ - 170
Peacock Premium - 56

Crackle - 68
Filmrise - 7
Freevee - 130
Peacock - 31
Plex - 167
The Roku Channel - 168
Shout! Factory TV - 11
Tubi - 390
Vudu Free - 77

I forgot to mention that I'm going to try to get through this challenge without watching films having to do with Nazis. I'm just not interested this year which sucks because I just bought Casablanca and the Indiana Jones box set in 4k.

I would think with this challenge, that would require thorough research. Hell, there's probably a Nazi somewhere in The Wizard of Oz I've somehow never noticed.

I've updated the first post with a link to this year's nominees. Everything Everywhere All At Once, All Quiet on the Western Front and The Banshees of Inisherin cleaned up. I'm kinda sad Tom Cruise didn't get nominated for Maverick but at least it got a Best Picture nomination. Shadokitty was right, Avatar got a nom for visual effects and best picture.
Let the viewing begin.

After not finding anything good that was eligible on Dish, I made use of my Roku TV for my first watch. I watched the John Ford Documentary, The Battle of Midway, on YouTube. I expect my TV to be a huge help this challenge.

I was just checking out imdb to see what was available where. All I had to do was wait a few minutes and Travis would have hooked me up. I did see that Tar will be available on Peacock on January 27.

Re: The 17th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (January 24 - March 12, 2023)
Like a zillion other people, I made a list on Letterboxd of this year's nominees. If you have a Patron or Pro account, you can filter by your streaming services. Also, thanks for mentioning TÁR coming to Peacock. I was certain I'd seen it advertised on the app, but hadn't taken notice of when it was going up. I gotta say, I feel more interested in this year's group as a whole than I felt about the last few years. I'm most excited to finally watch Everything Everywhere All at Once. I picked it up during Walmart's Black Friday sale and held off on it until this challenge. Also snagged The Batman during that same sale. That one, I did catch at the drive-in but I'm keen to revisit it anyway. A friend of mine has been pleading with me to watch The Banshees of Inisherin. I'm hopeful I might catch The Fabelmans at the theater. Hadn't heard about Fire of Love but it sounds intriguing. (Doc about a volcanologist couple who died during an eruption in 1991). I meant to see Turning Red by now, but kinda forgot about it. And I'm automatically interested in anything with a title like An Ostrich Told Me the World Is Fake and I Think I Believe It.
The only other nominees I've seen are Glass Onion and Top Gun: Maverick. I liked the former, though it doesn't necessarily sound like it to listen to me talk about it, and I loved the latter. I think it's high time the Academy revisited their definition of originality, because neither of those two have any business being nominated for Adapted Screenplay. They seriously need to distinguish between an actual adaptation of an existing work and a new story using existing characters. The only Academy category issue I feel more strongly about is that it is way past time to present an award for stunt work.

Re: The 17th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (January 24 - March 12, 2023)
Glad I can finally stop waiting to watch Banshees.
I did watch Tar last week because I didn’t feel like waiting. It was worth the watch, though.
