The 7th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (1/24 - 2/24)

The 7th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge

Official Rules

-ANY movie that has been NOMINATED or WON an Academy Award counts

-There is NO time limit, meaning it doesn't matter how long or short the item in question is, as long as it has been nominated or won an Academy Award

-You can watch a movie once then count it again if you watch the same film with a commentary

-There WILL BE a separate thread for LISTS ONLY created shortly before the challenge begins.

-You can count the actual Academy Awards Ceremony to be televised on Sunday February 24, 2013 as an entry if you'd like.

-There will be an "In Memoriam" Wild Card option. You can select up to 10 films to watch featuring a celebrity that died during 2012. But only ONE movie per celebrity. For example: You can watch "The Wild Bunch" to honor Ernest Borgnine but you cannot watch another Ernest Borgnine movie unless another celebrity that died during 2012 is in it. If that makes sense... The celebrity has to have died in 2012.

-The challenge begins on Thursday January 24, 2013 at 12:00am CST and will end at 11:59pm on Sunday February 24, 2013

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, REMEMBER TO NUMBER YOUR LISTS

I've been looking forward to this as soon as I heard when the Academy Awards were going to be presented. And I just recently replaced my scratched up copies of the Lord of the Rings films. Just the Theatrical editions as I didnt have the funds for the Extended versions, but it is better than nothing.

Re: The 7th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (1/24 - 2/24)

This is the challenge where I watch the most movies that start out not interesting me and end up being terrific so I am really looking forward to it. There is also a good crop of movies nominated this year even though a number of good ones were also overlooked. It should be an exciting month!

I was just wondering about the next challenge (thought it was Action) so

Maybe I'll hold off a little longer on seeing Life of Pi.

So many new Oscar movies on Blu for this year's challenge! Looking forward to it!

Of course, I just watched my screener of "Les Miz" last night...oh, well, I'll have to watch it again anyway...

I'll be in contact with you, "The Monkees". I think I have some DVD titles I can add to this as an incentive!

I love this challenge for the fact it gives me a chance to watch films I should have seen already but never did.

I'm looking forward to this so much I looked for the thread on the afternoon of January 10th. Planning to watch a bunch of AFI Top 100 films and going to the AMC Movie Showcase to see all the Best Picture nominees.

Very handy, thank you.

Although... does anyone have another link to search Oscar-nominated films by cast - or a way to synch up IMDb an the Oscar database? I have several of the Warner Signature sets, and was wondering if there was an easy way to check which films were nominated.

Thanks to the Oscar database, if the particular actor/actress was nominated themselves, I can find a list. But if they were merely in the film as a co-star, I presume I'll have to check each title individually...

I'm a little annoyed that this challenge starts so early and overlaps with the TV challenge for eight days. Which puts me in quite a bind for those days: do I watch more episodes of "Ultraman" and "The Untouchables" or stuff that's "good for you," like GANDHI and CHARIOTS OF FIRE?

I know exactly what you mean. I'll probably just alternate and watch some of each.

Why choose between the challenges, when there are several movies that qualify for both! I've already decided, for instance, that I'm going to finally sit down with the television cut of Fanny and Alexander during the overlap period. That was Ingmar Bergman's preferred cut of it. I may or may not get to the theatrical abridgment during the Academy Awards Challenge. If not, I'll come back to it in September for the Criterion Challenge.

Thankfully, the movie doesn't suck and is really awesome! I may have to go see it again on the big screen.

I'm just going to focus on finishing my goal of completing In Search Of. If I finish before the end of the month, then I'll start doing this one, mixed in with my usual TV schedule.

Re: The 7th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (1/24 - 2/24)

I'm unfortunately only going to be home for 12 days of this challenge this year, so I've been trying to make a list so I can get to the things I really really want to watch, of course I made sure I was home in time for the AMC best picture showcase. The friend I'm visiting is on a bit of a James Bond kick lately so I might be able to steer us towards ones that were nominated while I'm there.

"Several" might possibly be over-stating it, but you're right that there are some. Still... over a week is quite a while.

(Maybe if this overlap occurs next time around, one suggestion - and I realise this could undermine the Oscars and make it all rather awkward - there could be special dispensation for other Awards - so a TV show winning a Bafta could count for each challenge. Or something.)

I did think of that, too! But I don't have it.

You'd be surprised. Remember, in the TV on DVD* Challenge, movies that directly connect with a TV series are eligible. That includes things like the Star Trek movies (about a third of which were at least nominated for various Academy Awards). There were also several Disney movies that spun off TV shows, like Timon & Pumbaa coming out of The Lion King. Somewhere in a previous year's discussion thread for either of the two challenges I think I started a running list of such movies. I should root around for that and update it.

Hmm. A sort of catch-all "Awards Season Challenge"? It has some measure of appeal, I have to admit, but I personally prefer the narrow focus of the Academy Awards Challenge by itself. Still, I could see something like that working as a sort of an expert level sub-challenge, such as what Chad has done with the Horror Challenge.

I did think of that, too! But I don't have it.
I don't either; but I do have a HuluPlus subscription, which includes The Criterion Collection! You can deactivate and reactivate at will, so I'd recommend at least paying the $7.99 for the month of September for the Criterion Challenge. Well worth it!

Re: The 7th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (1/24 - 2/24)

Is it true that no Looney Tunes, Three Stooges, or Popeye were ever nominated for Academy Awards? or was I not using the database correctly? All I know is when I looked them up I came up with no results.
