The 10th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (January 29 - February 28)

The 10th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge

Official Rules

-ANY movie that has been NOMINATED or WON an Academy Award counts

-There is NO time limit, meaning it doesn't matter how long or short the item in question is, as long as it has been nominated or won an Academy Award

-You can watch a movie once then count it again if you watch the same film with a commentary

-There WILL BE a separate thread for LISTS ONLY created shortly before the challenge begins.

-You can count the actual Academy Awards Ceremony to be televised on Sunday February 28 2016 as an entry if you'd like.

-There will be an "In Memoriam" Wild Card option. You can select up to 10 films to watch featuring a celebrity that died during 2015. But only ONE movie per celebrity. For example: You can watch "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" to honor Leonard Nimoy but you cannot watch another Leonard Nimoy movie that did not win or was not nominated for an Oscar unless another celebrity that died during 2015 is in it. If that makes sense... The celebrity has to have died in 2015.

-The challenge begins on Friday, January 29, 2016 at dusk and will end on Sunday, February 28 2016 (Oscar Telecast)

- You can watch current nominees starting on Thursday, January 14 and have them count.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, REMEMBER TO NUMBER YOUR LISTS

I haven't decided yet if I'll watch them yet, but does anyone here plan to watch the Golden Globes tonight, since they are kind of a preseason for the Oscars?

I've been a bit disappointed in this year's crop of films so I have no idea what's in store for us in terms of nominations. The Golden Globes are sometimes a decent indicator so that might provide a clue or two. I'm hoping I'll at least have an excuse to see The Force Awakens in theaters again.

Somewhere had a Predictions list, and half was things I'd never heard of, and over a third was things that are neither on DVD nor still in theatres... so the nominations periid may be very light for me, too!

TCMs schedule goes through March 2, and February has 29 days this year... any interest in extending the official end date by a day or three..?

It wouldn't bother me too much, but ending on the Oscar ceremony itself seems one of our best Challenge traditions around here.

And one will have two other Challenges on the 29th.

I'm flexible on when the Challenge begins but I think we have to end it on Ceremony night. It seems fitting. I don't know what the next Challenge is but maybe some of the TCM films would fit?

Re: The 10th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (January 29 - February 28)

I had a lot of fun last year, focusing on films I've never prior seen. I might do that again, along with some annual favorites (Virginia Woolf, The Graduate, Capote, The King's Speech, The Dark Knight). Hopefully I'll have that Criterion edition of The Graduate by then.

I'm really looking forward to this Challenge too, as besides the movies I have on DVD, I have a good selection on Roku, and a Dish hookup in my room.

I wonder if I'm the only one getting excited enough about the nominations to be reading prediction articles to see if they have access to any movies in the pre challenge period?

I've been steering clear of predictions and such. Last year, I swore off thinking about nominations before they were announced. However, before then I would obsessively read anything I could get my hands on!

There is a podcast called "Little Gold Men" that has been going through predictions and the history of the award. You might want to check it out if you're in the mood for some analysis of the field. I've heard that it's very good and features some great commentators.

Other than rentals, it seems I only have a few options, but it doesn't mean I don't look forward to two weeks from now any less, plus I enjoy documentaries, and have been looking forward to watching the new Mad Max movie, since it's on HBO Go.

Re: The 10th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (January 29 - February 28)

I'm going to revisit Mad Max in light of all those nominations. I saw it in the theater and thought it was interesting but I didn't think it was 10 freaking nominations interesting.

As I suspected, I have an excuse to see The Force Awakens in theaters again. I'll finally see Inside Out and maybe check out Sicario as I have heard a lot of good things about both of them.

Re: The 10th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (January 29 - February 28)

I started my pre challenge with a double credit viewing. I had Racing Extinction on my DVR from when it was aired on the Discovery Networks a month or two ago, so decided to watch that.
