Yes. Here, too.

Agreed, but:

That's another reason a week of Romance within (and without) Oscars seems like a good idea: short enough that there's an end in sight and that it doesn't get old. But long enough for a good dozen(+) films.

I think I'm finally caught up on all the links for the Challenge history in the first few posts of this thread. Not everything is in tables yet, but plan to do that eventually.

I agree as well but I use the discussions for those to possibly pick up something new that falls within my general interests. It's one of those things that I've been alive long enough to *absolutely know* I do *not* care for certain sub-genres or types so I now just avoid them. Those subsets have too much that's outside my interest areas for me to try for completion so I don't bother, though I still follow the discussions and contribute on films I've seen.

I second the vote for Lisa. And I remember there being talk of officially starting the Challenge with the announcement of the nominations. I vote for that option.

As I posted in last year's Oscar thread, I'm happy to host this year's Challenge. The nominees are announced on the 24th and the telecast is February 26th. If no one else wants to host, I'll start a discussion thread next week.

I'll third it! :) Though, I don't care when it starts...I probably wouldn't start until after the TV on DVD challenge ends. But I don't care if others would want to start with the announcement either.

Are you planning to run next month's A/A/C/M Challenge, Trevor? I'm only asking, as it is only a little over a week till the beginning of the Challenge, and no thread had been posted.

Doh! Totally missed this bump (DVDTalk new post notifications seem wonky lately), and almost forgot about this Challenge again. Thanks shado.

Is anyone doing the science fiction challenge this year? Really don't want to see this end but I have very little time so won't be able to run it.

Yup. I run that one and the animation one, for the last few years at least. I will put the threads up closer to the end of the month. Those two are my favorites.

So earlier tonight I requested that the Animation list thread get sticky'd and it's now disappeared. Have a feeling it got deleted rather than pinned. Should I just go ahead and replace it or is there a way that it could be fixed? Thanks!

It may have been accidentally moved to wherever threads go when they "moderate" them, so hold off on starting a new one.

Who did you ask to move it? Maybe send them a PM and ask about it. Or just PM Giles. He's one of the three moderators and takes part in Challenges.

Thanks, was just searching for a moderator to pm. I didn't ask one specifically, I did the report option which I usually use to ask (that's the way I was told to use to ask for a pinned thread, please let me know if there's another way that's better).

No, the Report Post thing is probably the best way to get the thread stickied.

The moderators are listed at the bottom right on the main forum page. For this forum, it says "nemein, Scott_Lecter, Giles." I'd use Giles since he takes part in the challenges, so he might have more interest in fixing the problem. :)

I clicked on Giles on the main page and it says he was last on the forum about 40 mins ago (so he probably did whatever it was that happened). Scott_Lecter says 5 years ago!, and nemein doesn't have that info available. So yeah, PM Giles.

Thanks to Giles, the list thread has been recovered. A bit of accidental button pushing when getting it sticky'd yesterday. We are good to go!

Time to start planning for the 2017 Criterion Challenge. Who wants to run it this year? First refusal rights to Travis McClain and Cardiff (I haven't posted in two years but still visit daily) Giant.

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium

So, do we want a separate subforum for Challenges? We've discussed it a bit before I'm pretty sure. With DVDTalk being so dead, and it being the holidays, I figure it might be a good time to ask favors, as the powers that be might be in a charitable mood.

Im not sure we need it, but thought it worth bringing up again.

We also need a food sub-forum.

lisadoris 11-28-17 05:03 AM

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium

I don't know that we need it. Pushing everything to a subforum might make it more difficult for newbies to see the threads and get involved.

BTW, the Oscar Challenge won't begin until February in 2018 thanks to the Winter Olympics pushing the telecast to March 8.

According to this article the nominations will be announced on January 23rd. That would be the start of the challenge. No?

We typically run from announcement to ceremony so that would mean the Challenge would run from 1/23 to 3/8. That seems a little long but I'll defer to the judgement of the group. Otherwise I figured 2/8-3/8 would give us approximately 30 days.

Trevor 11-29-17 09:19 AM

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium

I'd vote for the traditional announcement to ceremony timeframe. In the past, iirc, it's not always exactly 30 days. Now if they ever change it to two months or so between those things, it'd be wise to re-examine it.

The one month (plus dusk to dawn) seems appropriate for most Challenges, but I like the extension for holiday, and think we should consider it for Historical Appreciation, where including Memorial Day and July 4th might be cool.

davidh777 11-29-17 10:05 AM

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium

Also in favor of following the natural dates of announcements to ceremony rather than an arbitrary 30 days that doesn't match up with the months. I bet that would drive OCD folks insane.
