It is with great regret I must retire from the challenges. My job situation has changed and I am no longer available to host the Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge. If anyone would like to take over, they are welcome to do so. Perhaps I'll be able to participate, but I doubt it. My cozy desk job has changed to a road gig and I really can't do it from a hotel room hundreds of miles from home.
I'm very proud of the challenge and hope it falls into good hands. I've enjoyed the challenges and am proud of what I've been able to give back to the challenge community. Wild Cards, signature links back to personal lists, a more fair and inclusive system of prize give away (entries for participation, additional entries for accomplishments, etc. Although I kind of abandoned prizes in my own challenges), Fantasy being included in the Sci-Fi challenge (by inspiring the challenge runner with how much fun multi-subject challenges are), refining the disparate concepts of Westerns and War Movies into an all encompassing Historical Challenge, and the concept of Safe Lists in my beloved Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie challenge which also embraced so many different but spiritually similar genres. Whomever takes it over can change it to their own vision or keep it the way it is. It's all yours. Thanks again for everything. But are you sure you want this? Your current job situation may not last forever. And since you’ve already done all of the hard work in previous years, I’m sure the Challenge can survive with a year of you just cutting and pasting last year’s OP, and the usual very minimal rule input needed throughout the month. |
Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium
We can see. I'm in a hotel 170 miles from home. A challenge to participate let alone run, but it might be able to run itself with minimal effort. We'll see as it gets closer.

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium
Either way, thanks for all your work on the challenge, caligula! |
Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium
Just a note, the Drive-in Challenge is live. I'm not linking here because the URL might change when the title gets corrected (I forgot to put the date of the challenge in the title).

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium
Just wanted to let people know that I'm still in for hosting both July's Sci-Fi/Fantasy challenge and August's Animation challenge. I'll get July's threads started closer to the end of the month.

Yeah, if I host comedy again, it’ll be the first time from my iPad with no image links or format copying. We’ll see what happens. |

I discovered for July's challenge that if you hit the source button (the far right of the tool bar in the comment message), you can copy that and paste it into the new message/comment you are creating and it'll transfer over. That being said, I see a lot of extra paragraphs get transferred over as well and font sizing doesn't always work either (if at all, haven't played with that aspect yet). Hope that helps!

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium
Comedy list thread has been posted. Since I was late posting the discussion thread, I just did both at the same time.
Rather than try it on my mobile device, I finally gave up and installed Chrome on my laptop. So far, so good. |

YMMV, but I found it all but impossible to do anything on this forum in Chrome. Firefox was considerably more cooperative.

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium
So the editor choices have been diminished, thread here:
https://forum.dvdtalk.com/forum-feed...rd-editor.html IBJoel reached out to Chad and I, maybe others, asking for input on how the changes previously affected Challenge posts, and that he might be able to help us with workarounds. I know we’ve discussed it a bit before. If you have any input, maybe post it here and/or that feedback thread. Thanks! |
Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium
Here's my input:
The forum is virtually unusable for me on Chrome now because an endless parade of background things keep loading and causing it to freeze altogether. That's the biggest problem I have. As for the composition and editing process for new posts, it's not the nightmare that it first appeared. It's not as intuitive as I would like, though that may be more a matter of me needing to continue adapting. Where the problem is with challenges is doing pretty much anything that relies on text from a post composed before the change. Specific to challenges as host, this is problematic because I copy and paste from one year's post to the next. That lets me easily maintain a uniform layout that only requires a little bit of alteration to update for the new year. I've been unable to do that since the change, because the previous formatting is not accepted. I have to go through and delete all the [i] and go back through to highlight and italicize using the current system. As soon as I do this, the post will not accept the [url= blah, blah, bah ] code so I have to fix all my hyperlinks. Ditto with colors and sizes. It frustrated me so much with the Criterion Challenge discussion and list threads that I very nearly gave up altogether and handed it over to someone else. I was thisclose to not even participating at all because I knew I would have the same problems copying and pasting the template I use for my personal list posts as well. |
Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium
Happy holidays all. Unless someone else wants to take the reigns, I'll start the Oscar Challenge threads on January 1 (nominations will be announced on the 13th). Judging from the previous posts, I see I'll have some work to do formatting the opening posts. Fun, fun, fun.

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium
So just random thoughts, but noticed that February is largely empty with the Academy Awards ending so soon in the month (the 9th). We do have our third Leap Day Challenge at the end of the month.
One thought to is to have the extra days be ‘bonus time’ for Leap Day. Another is to squeeze is a random one-off Challenge, or second Make-your-own for the year. Or just ignore this almost three week break. |

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium
Romance would work with Valentine’s Day, and I always like music/musicals. Trevor has often talked about a drama theme as well, though there have been concerns about being too generic or too close to the Oscars theme.
|
Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium
I think musicals would be a fun challenge! I remember drama being talked about before, but I kind of feel like you can fit drama in most of the challenges pretty easily already and not sure it would need its own challenge.
|
Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium
Well, since no one has any ideas, I’d like to propose a Romance/Musicals Challenge. ;)
Anyone who has never run a Challenge before interested in starting it up? It’s honestly not much work, especially after the first time, then it’s mostly an annual cut and paste job. |

Another question: I was thinking this would cover the Oscar gap specifically, but would it make more sense just to cover all of February like all other challenges that aren’t tied to specific events? That would allow for interesting overlaps with Oscars and time travel. |
Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium
Go for it davidh777 ! I’d recommend including all things music related, as Fist of Doom Jr suggested.
The full month sounds good for me. One obviously doesn’t have to start on the 1st if they want to stay in Academy Awards until it ends. |

How about a Music Challenge? It could include musicals, concert dvds, documentaries on music artists and music-related films (it'll give me an excuse to re-watch Spinal Tap!) It also meshes well with the Academy Challenge.
Just a thought. |

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium
I don’t remember who ran it last year, but is the same person planning to run the Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Challenge this year?

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium
^That was Greg MacGuffin. His Last Activity was 11-03-19 @ 08:24 PM.

PMed Greg, but if he doesn’t respond in the next couple days how about you starting it Bob? It’s seriously only as much work as you make it. The prizeless Challenges here take the OP maybe 90 seconds of work for the entire month. Just cut and paste from the previous year, tweak the date, read the thread as you would normally for any input or tweaks, easy peasy. |
Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium
Yeah, it's easy to host a challenge, if you frequent the forum. Which brings me to this: Does anyone want to take over the May MYOC this year? It is even easier to host than the others, but I just don't think I should host it, since I come by here so infrequently.
