I started off well, but I've just kinda hit a brick wall for some reason. Can't really account for it. Just sorta lost my momentum.

You still have 2 weeks, Travis. Lots of time to get back on track.

Re: The 17th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (January 24 - March 12, 2023)

A friend of mine decided that she wanted to show a few of her friends one of her favorite movies on Discord. It turned out to be RRR . After watching it, I couldn’t believe that it’s only nod was for original song. The movie seemed to have everything. Drama, comedy, action, epic song and dance numbers, even a love story.

Now I'm going to be on the lookout for coffee and vinyl. The latter didn't show up in yesterday's viewing.

It happens to everyone. If you want, you have plenty of time to rack up some views.

Wow! Really loved All the Beauty and the Bloodshed! Had MUCH lower expectations for a 2 hour documentary, but it was riveting from the very first shots! A very well told story about an extremely interesting person fighting an extremely important cause, taking on extremely powerful people... true villains in of our times. I bet I can tell a lot about the 6% of critics that gave this a "rotten" rating on RT. Well worth the iTunes rental fee.

"The Red Suitcase" has arrived on Vimeo!

All Live Action Short Films are now available online through various sources!

As we wind down...

Update

Of the 39 feature films nominated for Oscars, the only ones that can't be streamed, don't have a date or aren't yet on physical media (in the U.S. anyway) are:

Avatar: The Way Of Water
Living
The Quiet Girl (though it is available on Region B Blu-ray from the U.K. - it also has a listing at iTunes, so fingers crossed - it's a great film!)

and the only short not available is:

How Do You Measure A Year?

Re: The 17th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (January 24 - March 12, 2023)

Lots of updates for the weekend!

Some digital titles are no longer available for rental.

Close is now available for Digital Purchase

Living is now available for Digital Premium Rental or Purchase

Marcel The Shell With Shoes On is now streaming on Showtime

Triangle Of Sadness is now streaming on Hulu

Women Talking is now available for Digital Rental or Purchase

This makes only 2 feature films not yet available somewhere, somehow online:

Avatar: The Way Of Water
The Quiet Girl (it has a pre-order listing at iTunes, so hopefully this week)

And, sadly, "An Irish Goodbye" and "The Red Suitcase" have been removed from Vimeo...

One week to go and I only need to watch RRR and Tell It Like a Woman, which is completely unavailable in Canada for any price on any platform. Why is there always one??

I too took a couple days off (conference travel) but now I'm back double dipping with the Action/Adventure Challenge. I just wish it would stop snowing.

I Just watched the 1999 animated short film The Old Man and the Sea on YouTube. It was the 2000 winner in the category. Amazingly animated by painting on glass! The story is what you think, but every frame is amazing to look at as you imagine it being done that way! Search until you find one in 1080p, there's a LOT of 480p versions there.

Re: The 17th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (January 24 - March 12, 2023)

So, with about 5 days to go, I've done the best I humanly can to complete the list of 2023 nominated films. That will just leave the one unavailable (in Canada, at least). I guess I at least have the option of listening to the song for which it was nominated. It's always kind of been a debate in my mind as to whether I should have to watch films that are only nominated for a song. I guess it depends on whether part of the voting criteria has to do with how well it fits with the film. Is that factor merely up to the voter? Now I have a few days left to work on my 2021 list (I still have 17 features to go there).

BTW, RRR was fantastic and should have at LEAST got a cinematography nomination!

Re: The 17th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (January 24 - March 12, 2023)

Thanks Mao for the info on Women Talking. I watched it today and let's just say I'm real surprised it was nominated for Best Picture. That wasn't even the best picture I watched today (saw Creed III in the theater this morning).

I think I'm done for the challenge. I might watch Tar tomorrow but everything I've read about it makes me think I won't vibe with it so I might save it for another year.

I'm happy I didn't wake up to any major surprised. I'm so happy Everything, Everywhere All At Once won pretty much everything (though I was rooting for Angela Bassett for Supporting Actress). Congrats to all the winners.

Thank you everyone for participating in the Challenge. If there are any changes, additions, or things you'd like to omit for next year, let me know. Feel free to take your viewing over to the Action/Adventure Challenge.

Re: The 17th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (January 24 - March 12, 2023)

Thanks for running the challenge, Lisadoris! I had a blast! I accurately predicted 13 of the 23 winners. In the last week I also watched the last 3 international films nominated in 2016 that I had not seen yet and they were ALL excellent. I recommend all of them (Mustang [France], A War [Denmark] and Embrace of the Serpent [Columbia]), as well as the film they lost to that year, Son of Saul (Hungary). They were all fantastic films and could have won in any other year. Now I need a month of B movies and exploitation films... come on, April!

Thanks for running a great challenge. I would like to resubmit for your consideration a "snubbed" option for up to 3 movies that we believe were snubbed by the Academy. Hopefully, folks won't use it for things like Baby Geniuses or Seed of Chucky

I’m good with bringing back the snubbed option. The last time we had it as part of the challenge I used it on Devil in a Blue Dress and I STILL think Don Cheadle was robbed of a nomination/win for his performance.
