The 16th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (February 8 - March 27 2022)

The 16th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge

Official Rules
-ANY movie that has been NOMINATED or WON an Academy Award counts

-There is NO time limit, meaning it doesn't matter how long or short the item in question is, as long as it has been nominated or won an Academy Award

-You can watch a movie once then count it again if you watch the same film with a commentary

-There WILL BE a separate thread for LISTS ONLY created shortly before the challenge begins.

-You can count the actual Academy Awards Ceremony to be televised on Sunday March 27, 2022 as an entry if you'd like.

-There will be an "In Memoriam" Wild Card option. You can select up to 10 films to watch featuring a celebrity that died since the last Oscar Ceremony. But only ONE movie per celebrity. For example: You can watch “A Raisin in the Sun” to honor Sydney Poitier but you cannot watch another Poitier movie that did not win or was not nominated for an Oscar unless it stars another eligible celebrity. If that makes sense... The celebrity has to have died since the last ceremony.

-The challenge begins at dawn local time Tuesday, February 8 at and will end at 11:59 pm on Sunday, March 27.

We have overlapping Challenges for the next couple months! Let's get this discussion started. Any nomination predictions? Anything you want to change for this year's Challenge?

I always meant to ask... when it says watch a film winner from these years.. do we mean any oscar winner from those years, or the a best picture winner from those years?

A winner in any category for that decade.

I'm excited about the challenge this year. Last year, I was in the midst of a COVID plus stressful job depression and watched very few of the Oscar nominees - so few that I could dedicate this challenge to just catching up with all the things that I missed. I'm planning to finally watch Nomadland, Promising Young Woman, and Minari this month.

Thanks to HBO Max, which I get for free from AT&T because I have an unlimited data plan, I'm thinking of watching both Superman The Movie , and the first run of the Batman movies. IIRC, the first three are eligible for the challenge. I remember seeing Batman Forever in the theater. That was the only time I enjoyed Jim Carrey, and I thought Tommy Lee Jones was a very good Two Face.

It should be another interesting year of watching. On one hand, I’ve been to the theater twice in the last two years. On the other hand, I’ve had more time to watch, and I do have several of the services that content has been split out onto.

Apparently the database doesn't work on the mobile version of Microsoft Edge either. I put Edge on my phone to be able to look up the database and it wasn't compatible. Just like Safari

I do not understand why this is a thing. It makes no sense!

Thanks to COVID I haven't been to a theater since the summer so I doubt I've seen anything that's been nominated. Hopefully some of the nominees are on streaming services.

Re: The 16th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (February 8 - March 27 2022)

I know it's awfully late to bring up, but I didn't realize how the decades were organized on the checklist until just now. Wouldn't it be easier to just throw the 1920's in with the 1930's (as 1927-1939) and leave the rest of the year intervals as standard decades (1940-1949, etc.)? I don't see the harm in casting a bit wider net for those early years. The rules and categories were in flux. Only 78 total films were nominated for anything from 1927-1929/1930, and of them only 25 of them won anything. We'd just leave the 2020's as optional until we're a bit further into the decade, though honestly given how readily available recent nominees are, I wouldn't even mind if it was just made part of the checklist proper.

I'm cool with that change. Does anyone have an objection?

Re: The 16th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (February 8 - March 27 2022)

There were no objections to Travis' suggestion so I changed the checklist.

I will be late posting the link to the nominations because I have a doctor's appointment at that time.

Happy viewing everyone!

So I managed to see 17 of the nominees before they were announced. I need to see 21 more (not counting shorts, that I'll see when one of our film festivals shows them all in theatre this month).

I've seen 7 of the nominees so I've got some work to do.

I did not get my money’s worth out of my recently expired Regal Unlimited Pass. Have only seen six films with nominations, and only one film with a nomination in the big four categories.

I was just watching my local news when they were talking about the nominations. Nightmare Alley was filmed in my backyard.

There's a lot of the nominated short films easy to find on-line (there's a ton on YouTube), so this challenge I've decided to pair each movie I watch with a nominated short from that same year, sort like it's the opening feature at the theatre.

Re: The 16th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (February 8 - March 27 2022)

CODA was quite good. For a few minutes I thought it was going to be some kind of Mean Girls high school romance film but it quickly got off that track, thank goodness. Ended up being much different and really kind of dropped the high school drama for much more interesting territory. Highly recommended and is available on AppleTV+, as indicated by Mao.
