When i was watching, i was thinking, wow that's a terrible CGI giraffe and now I just read they used a real giraffe so maybe I need to calibrate my Tv or my eyes

Was there rationale for why Joel and Ellie went through/near the city to begin with? Why wouldn't they just stay away from populated areas and take back roads?
