Re: Godzilla Minus One (2023) New Toho produced Godzilla film

They should have planned their acceptance speech better by having a designated English speaker read it or having Yamazaki read it in Japanese with an interpreter on hand. As it stands, no one...

Re: The 96th Academy Awards --> 2024 Oscar Awards Show Discussion

Re: The 96th Academy Awards --> 2024 Oscar Awards Show Discussion

Ended before 10:30! Which is really 9:30 (EST) because of Daylight Savings Time this morning.

The In Memoriam segment was really short. But I guess if they'd done it TCM style it would have gone...

Re: The 96th Academy Awards --> 2024 Oscar Awards Show Discussion

Re: The 96th Academy Awards --> 2024 Oscar Awards Show Discussion

Well, all three winners for the categories with Japanese nominees have been announced. Two out of three winners ain't bad at all.

Re: Godzilla Minus One (2023) New Toho produced Godzilla film

That's upsetting for those who didn't see it and those, like me, who want to see it again.

On a historical note, when I was a kid I used to have to wait till highly anticipated movies finally came...

Re: The 96th Academy Awards --> 2024 Oscar Awards Show Discussion

Three Japanese films nominated. I'm hoping at least one wins.
THE BOY AND THE HERON (Best Animated Feature);
GODZILLA MINUS ONE (Best Visual Effects);
PERFECT DAYS (Best International Feature).

Re: The One and Only Asian movies reviews, comments, news, and appreciation thread

After seeing Wim Wenders' PERFECT DAYS, a nominee for Best International Feature, I decided to explore Japan's history with the Best Foreign Language Film category and made some interesting...

Re: James Clavell's Shogun - Limited Series (FX) - premieres 2/27/24

I watched the original as it aired back in 1980 and I've been meaning to re-watch it on a DVD box set I bought some years ago. When I realized that the first two episodes of the new series were...

Re: 1 & Only Studio Ghibli Thread

I'd love to get this. Can it be ordered from any other on-line vendors? Or will it be available in stores? Thanks.

I remember seeing THERE WAS A CROOKED MAN (1970) in the theater and just near the end as Kirk Douglas was about to finally achieve the goal he'd been working towards the entire movie, a woman in the...

Re: Drive-Away Dolls (2024, D: Ethan Coen) S: Qualley, Viswanathan, Feldstein, Pascal, Domingo, Damon, Ca

I love Margaret Qualley's voice. Now if only she'd make a movie with fewer other people whose voices are so grating.

Re: High and Low (D: Spike Lee) S: Denzel Washington

No mention of it in the press release linked in the OP. Granted, that doesn't mean they didn't do it. I just hope they did. Nothing wrong with expressing that hope and bringing the original source...

Re: 50th anniversary of Blazing Saddles today! (2/7/74)

Re: High and Low (D: Spike Lee) S: Denzel Washington

For the record, Kurosawa's HIGH AND LOW was based on Ed McBain's crime novel, "King's Ransom," one of the author's 87th Precinct series. It might behoove Spike Lee's screenwriters to give that book a...

Re: The One and Only Asian movies reviews, comments, news, and appreciation thread

When Chow Yun-Fat gave a press conference in New York in 1996, I attended and wrote it up as a short piece to try to pitch to Entertainment Weekly. I found the piece recently and since it's never...
