Re: Underrated Westerns

The Legend of Frenchie King sounds correctly rated but I'd watch it:

A western with Claudia Cardinale and Brigitte Bardot?! How can I not have heard of this before?!

Underrated Westerns?

I love a good Western movie. High Noon, Once…West, Leone’s, all of Eastwood’s. Runs the gamut.

But, I’m watching a Western now, one that I’ve always loved and know it never or at least hardly ever gets talked about.

I’m talking about Quigley Down Under with Tom Selleck. (I don’t know why he never became a bigger movie actor. The three I’ve seen him in I’ve loved. QDU, An Innocent Man and I love Runaway to death. The Three Men trilogy) He’s been great. And, of course he’s a tv star and quite attractive. But, why not movie star eludes me.

So, what are some underrated Westerns that are great that no one seems to talk about?

Because I would love to discover some more Western hidden gems.

.
He's kind of boring. He's not a bad actor, but he does not have big screen charisma. That's why he has had success on network TV because it is more about being solid and audiences being comfortable with you.

I’ve always though this was a great western, with one of Selleck’s best theatrical roles, and with one of Basil Poledouris’ best scores as well. Might’ve been a bigger hit with a bigger star, but then westerns in 1990 weren’t really a thing anyway, so who knows.

Quigley released 10/19/90. Dances w Wolves released 11/9/90. Timing is everything.

Granted, and don’t forget YOUNG GUNS 2 just before either of them late that summer, and only a (very) modest hit. Personally, I still don’t think that qualifies as some big revival sweeping back into fashion, even if one added others from the next couple years like UNFORGIVEN, LAST OF THE MOHICANS, SOMMERBY, GERONIMO, TOMBSTONE, POSSE, and/or contemporary stuff like PURE COUNTRY, THUNDERHEART, etc. Some hits, some flops, but generally pretty good movies. I also recall a lot of westerns being made for cable back in those days, and presumably since. Westerns have always just kinda been around to some degree, whether or not the audience was there for them (as it both was and wasn’t for those 1990 pictures). It was probably the entertainment media typically going overboard claiming every (rare) blockbuster one heralded a big revival, which was rarely the case.

No Quigley, but I liked the lesser known The Jack Bull with John Cusack and John Goodman, In Pursuit of Honor with Don Johnson and The Ballad of Lefty Brown with Bill Pullman, which was released a couple of years ago.

Let me know how it is, because it's got me contemplating a purchase as well.

How have I not weighed in yet with this barely-talked-about classic?
