THIS THREAD IS FOR DISCUSSION ONLY!

<table border="2"><tr><td></tr></td></table>

<table border="2"><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#B0B0B0>
THE "RULES"
</td></tr><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#E8E8E8>
Since 2005 the goal of the challenge has been to reach 100 horror films in a month's time. Obviously this is not an attainable goal for everyone, so your personal goal is as high or as low as you choose. Whether it's achieved, surpassed, or not even close to being reached, the ultimate goal here is to enjoy yourself while conversing with fellow horror fans.
</td><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#B0B0B0>
As always, there will be a separate list thread posted roughly 2 weeks prior to the start date. Be creative and personalize your list however you wish - give reviews, post pics, link to your blog or start one on your page, provide IMDB links with your titles, add YouTube videos, include running times (calculating total times is up to you), etc. The forum software now allows for unlimited post length, although you're still welcome to post it in a weekly or biweekly format. It's also highly recommended that you provide a link to the list in your signature for easier access.

The only mandatory rule here is NUMBER YOUR LISTS!
</td></tr><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#E8E8E8>

If you're uncertain of the title's genre classification the IMDB and allmovie are the go-to sources for determining its potential horror movie status.
Of course, both sites have been known to make the occasional error and if you feel that's the case asking in the discussion thread is advised.
Just keep in mind that the main deciding factor regarding what counts is you and you alone.

<table border="2"><tr>
<TD BGCOLOR=#B0B0B0>
What qualifies?

Movies = 1 entry (despite running time)

TV shows count according to length as they're aired on TV (including commercials):
30 minute shows = ¼ an entry
1 hour shows = ½ an entry
2 hour shows = 1 entry

Mini-Series = 1 entry for each day it aired

Commentaries count. (no restrictions)

Documentaries count.

MORE DETAILED INFO:
Spoiler:

Concerning TV shows and shorts films:

Like the other challenges, you need four 30 minute shows for 1 entry and two hour-long shows for 1 entry. 30 minute shows typically run roughly 22 - 24 minutes without commercials and hour-long shows are roughly 43 - 45 minutes. If it's short films that are 10 minutes or less, once you hit around 23 minutes of watching them, you've reached one 30 minute show (¼ an entry). Any combination that gets you to 90 minutes can be used for 1 entry. And this is not an exact science, so if you're off by a little it's really no big deal.

Simply Put:

<table border=2></tr><td bgcolor=#B0B0B0>Feature Films</td><td bgcolor=#B0B0B0>Counts as 1 entry</td></tr><tr><td bgcolor=#B0B0B0>Short Films</td><td bgcolor=#B0B0B0>Add them up to total 90 minutes to get 1 entry</td></tr><tr><td bgcolor=#B0B0B0>Television Shows</td><td bgcolor=#B0B0B0>Add them up to 120 minutes (including commercials) to get 1 entry</td></tr></table>

When listing the TV shows try to keep them together in 1 entry.
Example: 30 min show/30 min show/30 min show/30 min show

For the sake of organization, it's advised that you keep a Temporary TV section at the bottom of your list until you get enough for an entry.

Why 90 minutes? Because we're keeping the continuity going with the other challenges.

</tr></td></table>

Every facet of horror counts: Horror-comedies, Sci-Fi horror, wretchedly bad horror [Insert Current Remake Here], kiddie horror, creature features, erotic horror, Masters of Horror, silents, made-for-TV movies, etc.
</td><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#B0B0B0>
Sometime in November there will be a results thread posted. If you wish to be included in the stats provided (aside from your number ranking), please include the following in your list:

- First time viewings. The ☼ is a commonly used symbol.
- Formats viewed. (BD, DVD, HD DVD, etc.) Blue text is often used to indicate Blu-rays.
- Your personal goal. Even if it happens to be the challenge's goal of 100.

</td></tr><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#E8E8E8>
Something might go here eventually. Stay tuned!
</td></tr><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#B0B0B0>
The formats and how you watch them is strictly your call -- DVD, Blu-ray, HD DVD, at the theater, on television, public domain downloads (links provided below), VHS, Laserdisc, Video On Demand, Netflix, UMD, MiniDV, CED, Unbox, through your neighbor's window, Apple TV, Watch Instantly, Hulu, Youtube, Payperview, Betamax, via laptop, netbook, VCD, Android phone, iPhone, iPad...you name it. And yes, that even includes the pan & scan edited-for-television movies that air on TBS with multiple pop-ups and commercial interruptions (NOT recommended!). Just make sure the film is viewed in it's entirety.
</td></tr><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#E8E8E8>
Keep it civil. We're here to have fun, so please don't take this thing too seriously.
</td></tr><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#B0B0B0>
You're welcome to include non-genre titles viewed during the month in your list, but please don't number them.

HELPFUL TIPS

Provide a link to your list in your signature.
Review it. Even if it's just a mini-review, a simple thumbs up / thumbs down or one word description.
If you're doing a checklist, putting it in a spoiler tag makes the list thread much easier to read.
Increase your coffee consumption.
Insomniac? Use your disadvantage to your advantage!
Work from home? Ditto.
Skip the supplemental material ...there's always November for that!
Boredom setting in? Watch another movie!
Try not to get too caught up in the numbers. Stay within your comfort level.
ENJOY YOURSELF!

If so, post your gamertag or send it via PM to Mister Peepers.

Feel free to host a party whenever you want.
If you're watching something check the DVDTalkHorror friend's list and invite people!

Just go to Friends ---> DVDTalkHorror ---> Personal Profile ---> View Friends.
And then you can just invite whoever is online on that list into a party.
Recently, Microsoft updated the Netflix player on the 360. Among the changes is the addition called 'Netflix Parties'. Basically someone is a host and invites people to watch a movie together. Everyone watches it at the same time, and we can communicate w/ voice during the movie.

You need an Xbox 360, a gold account, and a Netflix subscription. There's only one catch: For right now, Starz Play and Disney movies are not allowed to be used for parties.

We can use this thread to pick out movies and times to watch them. We can try to vary things up.

While we can watch classics or stuff we've all seen, I think it would be interesting to check out stuff that the entire group may not have watched. We could even take a gamble and watch god knows what. I think even some riffing on intentionally bad movies could be good for a laugh if done sparingly.

Just finishd watching May (2002) and wondering what others thought of it. Still trying to figure out how I feel about this flick. Ebert gave it 4 out of 4 and I am wondering if I am missing something but, really, 4 out of 4 for this? If anything, the movie is making me think about it before penning a review so I guess it is leaving an impression.

This may be old news to some but as a huge Kubrick (and Fulci) fan I find this fascinating:

Can't believe I never noticed.

I really enjoyed it. Definitely liked the creepy/odd take on Frankenstein.

I thought it was okay, a little overhyped though. Its been a few years since I've seen it but I remember pacing being a big issue for me.

I just finished up Frozen and though it was pretty damn good. Glad I decided to pick it up.

I included the childrens films that have horror elements - Shrek, The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, The Wizard Of Oz & The Wonderful World Of The Brothers Grimm

A couple of lighter films with horror elements - Beetlejuice & Ghost

And the biographical film about a horror director - Ed Wood

What are people's thoughts on Phantasm?

I was really disappointed by this one. Some people were telling me about things in the movie that scared the crap out of them, but I found it boring, and laughable more than scary. Am I missing something here?

I think everytime I watch it I fall asleep. It's very imaginative, just doesn't really do it for me. I like the idea and like thinking about it more than the actual execution.

After giving May a good long think I come to the conclusion that it missed the mark:

May is one messed up mama-jamma. Both the character and the film. I don’t quite know what to make of this one. Those who know me will know of my rants over the lack of originality in the current horror genre what with all the remakes marring up cinema screens with most, sigh, taking in enough cash to merit remakequals. Then along comes May, an quirky and new film that despite an obvious referencing of Frankenstein feels fresh though, perhaps, a little off. Sexual conflict, emotional trauma, lesbians, a well acted main role, gore but not to the point where it’s over the top. Yes, there’s a lot to enjoy here. Again, it’s hard to peg this one. I find myself wanting it to resonate more then it does. After all, I think, there are all those reviews online praising the film none more so amazing as Roger Ebert himself granting this 4 out of 4 stars. Ebert, with this rating, awards this the perfect film seal of approval. I guess, Rog, that doesn’t sit well with me. Annie Hall, for example, got three and a half stars. Is there really something so special in May that it should be placed so high? Maybe one has to consider that current state of modern horror here. It’s as though you have found a ripe peach in the tomato section, out of place, a little strange considering the surroundings. And maybe the film isn’t so original. May could be a slightly more demented, less telekentic, cousin of Carrie. I found the end of the film somewhat predictable and the ride to get there peppered with bad dialogue (“Do you have any ice I can rub on my nipples?” and pretty much anything utter by Anna Faris come to mind) and some annoying characters. If ever there is a Tommy remake we have our Roger Daltrey in Jeremy Sisto. In the end, I guess what I am getting is just because it’s new and fresh doesn’t make it good.
Rating: **
Rating for the student film shown in May: ***.5 (Now that was new, fresh AND good)

I can. That's hard to spot, but man is it cool. I beleive they came out way too close to each other for one to inspire the other. Maybe the same artist, or Cemetary just stole some cool image work that was already in production. Seems like something a low-budget Euro team would do.

Would Julie Taymor's Titus count? You've got rape, murder, mutilation, cannibalism and iambic pentameter.

Just finished up The Burning (1981)

Minus the first 15 minutes, I thought the film was extremely dull. Which is a real feat when you have Boobs, decent kills and Savini FX work.

Cronenberg gives good commentary. Any of the Kim Newman commentary tracks on the Val Lewton titles are worth listening to.

the Reds game tonight should count as a wild card, dreadful.

Earlier today I watched the biggest pile of shit I've seen in a long time, Trackman. I'm going to have to watch something great next, to makeup for it.

I'm thisclose to putting it on my list as a Wild Card entry, actually. In fact, thinking about doing that is the closest to a pleasant moment I've had since 5:00.

I was schooled about that link as well, and the fact that those Netflix instant watches actually expire.

I also love my Roku, and when I loaded the Archive.org channel onto it, wow, how cool!

Capping off my Night of Satan with House of the Devil. Seems to have got enough praise in this thread to give it a look.

Would Not Quite Hollywood count for a documentary? I'm not that familiar with the movies that it covers. I know they're exploitation flicks, but didn't know if any of them were considered horror?

Me and my wife this challenge:

12.)http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/1316/83839611.jpg
Phantasm (1977) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Obviously a classic. Every time I watch it I still get that feeling like I am a kid discovering it for the first time.
(5 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "Very Mysterious". "I just wondering where is that come from, the ball". "Scared, can't go to bed"(<-In Japanese) "Unrealistic, crazy movie".
(4.5 out of 5)

Anyone have a better Hagsplotation list? I can't find one on the wiki list that I either have or want to watch.

Any Cronenberg, any Carpenter (especially The Thing with Kurt Russell), The Shining, Alien, Aliens, Silence of the Lambs, The Frighteners, The Devil's Backbone, Stir of Echoes, Gremlins Crew Commentary. Both commentaries on Videodrome are great (Cronenberg and Woods/Harry). I am in the middle of The Picture of Dorian Gray I am about half way through right now and is delightful with a film historian and actress Angela Lansbury. If you are a fan of the original Dawn of the Dead, all 3 commentaries are interesting in their own way. I prefer the first and second ones more than the actor commentary on the 3rd disc.

I gave the Bruce Campbell solo commentary on The Evil Dead a 10/10 and the commentary on Evil Dead II a 9/10.

Also check out http://www.ratethatcommentary.com/ if you're on the fence.

:(

It's one of my all time favorite slashers! I thought the pacing was perfect because the atmosphere was just effective and creepy. It works in a low key way for the most part and won me over. The editing and score are also top notch and really make the film far better than many others from the time period.

If the atmosphere and characters didn't win me over, then I would have found the film boring with how slow it is in terms of long stretches between killings and such. But it works in a 'less is more' manner and delivers lots of tension, suspense, shocks, unease, which makes it all the more effective once a killing does occur than if it were a nonstop slash fest.

The film gets a big  and **** out of **** from me!

I'd say that it has the most unlikable collection of characters in any slasher film, which makes the raft sequence all the more satisfying!

Go to the "Roku Users" banner on the first page of this thread. There's a list of channels with a code. Copy that code for the channel you want, then click on the "Here" link below that list to add the channel. When you go to the link to add the channel, it explains to refresh your Roku channel listing by going "Home" and then back to the channels. It says it takes about 24 hours, but mine took maybe 2 minutes to be added.

It really is pretty easy.
