Put me down as another person who hates these fucking game threads. They've pushed a lot of threads off the front page and have made the movie area an annoyance. I'm staying out until the mods come to their senses and start enforcing the forum rules.

"Posting games" are generally disallowed and in the past we've asked members with more than a reasonable number of threads on the first page to hold back for a while and allow others to participate in thread starting. Such "forum domination" is frowned upon.If a thread has a life of its own there may be an argument for leaving things as they are. Gratuitous bumps, however, would be an indication that it has gone beyond its natural life and is being artificially resuscitated. If I were moderating Movie Talk talk and worried about forum domination, I'd be tempted to close or merge threads of this kind that seemed less than viable. <i><small>(For the avoidance of doubt, thus far I'm not familiar with the threads so do not know whether gratuitous bumps are even happening).</small></i>

Oh I wasn't saying they were being bumped gratuitously, just that earlier in the day all of those threads had posts that put them up near the top of the forum.

It was annoying seeing something like:

My point is, we shouldn't pretend that there's some grand, enlightened appreciation of film being gratuitously ruined by this game. The overwhelming majority of discussions in the Movies forum typically revolve around little more than the latest geek-fest. I'm not bashing it; I'm as big a geek as anyone I know, and I love that CGI and other technological developments have finally made it possible to see satisfying movies based on these kinds of stories.

To put it in perspective, the 27th highest thread at 2:00 was about finding an online image of the Sex and the City 2 poster. Take away the eight draft game threads, and that moves up to #19. That means only 18 threads in the entire forum were generating more discussion little more than 12 hours after the draft game posts were made.

As for benedict's concerns about gratuitous bumps, so far I haven't seen any. I've been having a back-and-forth with Suprmallet about James T. Kirk's character arc throughout the feature films, but that's about it for discussion after about the first two or three hours of those threads being live. To be honest, it's exactly the kind of discussion that would warrant a thread of its own on any other day around here (which is to say, the bantering of a pair of geeks about a character in a geek-supported franchise).

Merging the threads wouldn't work, since each one has a poll in which forum members vote for one participant's roster of characters over the other's. You'd have to supplant the A vs. B polls for a 16 choice poll in which members chose A or B, C or D, etc. Plus, all 160 characters would have to be listed in one place, making it frustrating for anyone to keep track of which forum members' lists they preferred in each match. Finally, each thread is intended to spark discussion about the characters. So far, this has largely consisted of lamphorn taking time to tell us Unforgiven was made "too long ago" and that I shouldn't have picked a character because it was from a movie he hasn't seen. But in the few cases where characters are being discussed, a merged thread would make that way too confusing.

I'm not sure why a 16 choice poll wouldn't work. As far as everything being in one thread, that's been done in the past and hasn't created too many issues. Here was the first round of the TV Talk draft a while back:

Are you implying that if the Movie forum was entirely filled with artsy indie and foreign flicks with discussion on their impact on relevant social issues, it would be more important? Content of the other threads is irrelevant, more so the primary issue is just that tons of polls are annoying and makes my visit to the Movie Forum look like this:

It is possible to discuss this without resorting to insults. It's obvious why you bumped it, but the issue is that if there was enough interest in the polls and the discussion then they wouldn't need to be bumped. Other threads were generating discussion that then got pushed further down the page.
